  • stator core cylinder (material – transformer iron). Both covers are attached to the stator using bolts (4 pcs.). There are grooves inside the stator that serve for laying power windings (they have leads for connection to the rectifier block);
  • excitation winding, which, using its terminals, is connected to slip rings installed on the rotor shaft. There is a special keyway on the front of the rotor shaft that houses the drive pulley;
  • brush assembly - in the VAZ 2114 generator this assembly is non-separable. It is combined with an electric relay-regulator (the relay is in a metal case and is rigidly riveted to the brush holder). The brushes used are carbon-graphite.

Next, the following steps are performed sequentially:

  1. The terminals are removed from the battery.
  2. The alternator belt is loosened and then completely removed.
  3. The belt tensioning mechanism is dismantled.
  4. The wires, which are covered with a rubber cover, are disconnected from the generator.
  5. The voltage supply connector to the voltage winding is disconnected.
  6. The generator is secured with a long nut and bolt, which is quite difficult to remove. First, you need to unscrew the bolts that secure the bracket to the block (using a 15mm socket). Then you need to rotate the device (direction clockwise), which will make it possible to remove the axis of attachment to the bracket. Now you can unscrew the nut with a 19mm wrench and pull it out along with the bushing.
  7. The axle is knocked out of the bracket using a punch.

Now you can remove the generator (up) and begin checking and servicing it.

This job is not difficult, you only need a screwdriver and a little dexterity. However, it wouldn’t hurt to use a “10” wrench or pliers to disconnect the terminal from the battery. Reasons for replacing the VAZ 2114 relay regulator:

  1. No charging.
  2. Headlights emit too little light in the dark.
  3. Reduced tension.

  2. Disconnect all wires from the brush block.

  • When the voltage exceeds 16 V (2-3 AA batteries can be connected in series with the battery), the lamp goes out.

Operating principle of the electrical energy source

There are 8 coils installed in the GU housing. The material is copper, the connection method is “star”. The rotor is a steel shaft, on the back surface of which magnetic circuits are pressed, between which a winding is installed.

Excitation winding wires and copper-graphite brushes are soldered to the shaft rings. After the ignition is activated, the current from the battery passes through the brushes and winding, forming a magnetic field.

Thus, the rotor is driven, and the alternating current is converted into direct current through the coils.

On the back side of the GU there are two terminals marked “+” and “–”. Accordingly, the terminals with the indicated polarity are connected to the battery.

To rotate the PG you need a battery. When the actual voltage during operation of the unit is higher than the battery voltage, the generator will begin to supply power to the battery consumers. Thanks to this, the on-board network current is maintained within a specified range.

Characteristic reasons for the failure of the main control unit on the VAZ 2114 (2115)

  • insufficient tension of the drive belt;
  • contamination of contacts on rings;
  • mechanical damage to the rectifier unit;
  • excessive wear of brushes;
  • jamming (freezing) of brushes;
  • short circuit in the winding;
  • power supply interruption;
  • the voltage regulator is faulty;
  • roller bearing wear;
  • pulley fixation is loose;

Preparatory stage:

  • a set of keys, heads, cranks;
  • a torque wrench to check the tension of the drive belt;
  • mounting spatula to remove the belt;
  • flat head screwdriver

Step-by-step replacement instructions:

  1. We fix the vehicle on a level platform.
  2. Squeeze the parking brake.
  3. Turn off the ignition.
  4. Open the hood.
  5. Disconnect the terminals from the battery.
  6. Unscrew the fastening of the “+” and “-” terminals from the generator set.
  7. We turn out the coupling bolt of the support bracket.
  8. We lower the unit down and remove the drive belt from the groove.
  9. We unscrew the studs and turn out the coupling bolt.
  10. To change the GU, we remove it from its regular place.

Do-it-yourself dismantling of the control unit on the VAZ 2114 (VAZ 2115) is completed. We carry out comprehensive preventative maintenance of the equipment, clean the housing and elements from dirt and dust, blow through the windings with a stream of compressed air, and dry the contacts.

We replace worn parts and components with new ones as necessary, if defects are detected. The generator must be completely replaced if cracks are detected in its housing.

In this case, further use of the equipment is strictly prohibited.

To reduce the frequency of replacing power units, some car owners install generators from Priora (injector, 8 valves). The equipment is more powerful in terms of technical characteristics, which means it ensures stability in the generation and supply of current to the motor.

A new generator set is 500 - 750 rubles more expensive than a standard one. The holes for fasteners completely coincide with the factory ones on the VAZ 2114 (VAZ 2115).

Generator - performance check

Many car enthusiasts are interested in how to test a new generator that has just been installed on a car? Or how to check that the old one has already failed, although it seems to be working normally? After all, driving with a faulty generator can have a number of unpleasant consequences, the easiest of which is completely discharging the battery and stopping the car, and the most severe is damage to the on-board network and devices.

In order to test this device, you will need a tester (multimeter).

The diagnosis itself is performed in the following order:

  1. Turn on the ignition.
  2. Check to see if the generator/battery lights on the instrument panel come on.
  3. Start the engine - if the light goes out, then everything is in order, if not, then there is a malfunction.
  4. Wait until the engine warms up to operating temperature.
  5. Turn on ALL electrical consumers - lights, fans...
  6. We bring the engine speed to 3500.
  7. Turn on the multimeter in voltage measurement mode and connect the probes to the battery.
  8. If the generator is working, the multimeter will show 13 volts, if less, then there is a malfunction.

  • the battery charging icon is constantly lit;
  • interruptions in the operation of electrical equipment, flickering headlights;

    These are a number of minor faults, but even they can sometimes lead to the need to replace the generator. In general, it is better to entrust the repair of generators to professionals from automobile workshops, but if you are well versed in cars, you can repair the generator yourself. To do this, you may need a generator diagram, which you can find on the Internet or in VAZ 2114 repair manuals. If something happens, buy a generator in a store for 2100-2300 rubles.

    2. Next, loosen the drive belt tension roller placed on the pulley.
    3. Then first unscrew the upper mounting bolt of the generator, and then the lower one.
    4. Loosen the air conditioning compressor mount.
    5. We remove the drive belt from the pulley and dismantle the generator, moving it to the right side closer to the battery.
    6. After unscrewing the bolt securing the air conditioning compressor, we hang the device.
    7. Unscrew the generator set mounting bolts.
    8. Having disconnected the terminals of the generator, we remove it for repair.

    Next, you can repair the removed unit.

    Malfunctions

    The following signs indicate that there is a problem with the generator:

    • the loud noise it makes;
    • The battery light installed on the panel is brighter than usual;
    • The lighting in the car is too bright;
    • Electrical appliances do not turn on when the battery indicator goes out.

    A hum or noise from the generator indicates that the bearings have become unusable. Most often, failure occurs in the front. You should not use a machine with such a malfunction - if the generator jams, then, most likely, it will completely lose its functionality. New ones, as you know, are not cheap.

    Bright lighting of the lights (even when the engine is turned off) indicates that the limit voltage in the network has been exceeded.
