Reasons for replacing brake pads on Lada Kalina
The main reasons for replacing pads are natural wear and premature failure. Driving a car with worn or faulty pads is not allowed, as this can lead to an accident due to reduced braking efficiency. In order to replace the pads on time, you need to pay attention to such symptoms of failure as an increase in braking distance and extraneous sounds when stopping the car (the pads on a VAZ rattle, scrape, whistle).
Brake pad wear can be caused by poor-quality composition of friction linings, malfunction of the working brake cylinders and frequent emergency braking. The specific service life of the pads depends on a number of factors, but according to the recommendations of automakers, they should be changed after every 10–15 thousand kilometers.
You need to change the pads in pairs, even if only one of them is worn out.
Brake pad part numbers
The pads for the first and second generations are different. Options without ABS.

ATE pads article number 142E3946 in original packaging.
Similar numbers are used for the Lada Priora. The owners noticed that they use TIIR , but they are of average quality, wear out quickly, and also the appearance of squeaking during braking after several thousand kilometers.
When to change (regulations)
To monitor pad wear, it is enough to look into the inspection window a couple of times a year, for example, when changing tires.
- Replacing the front pads must be carried out 1.5-2 times more often than servicing the rear brake system.
- It is difficult to accurately determine the mileage for replacement, but on average, wear occurs after 30-50 thousand km .
- For accurate diagnostics, it is recommended to check the thickness of the lining on the pads every 10-15 thousand km .
- The critical value is 2 mm or less.
We have already written in detail about the choice of front pads.
Tuning
The brake system can be modified by installing sports-type pads from the following brands: Brembo , Vanx or ProSport .
However, to carry out such work it will be necessary not only to install new pads, but also to replace the calipers, because they will differ in size from the standard.
When tuning, we recommend using soft pads, which have 1 mm thicker plates. They make it possible to provide improved braking, and the wear rate of the disc will be several times lower, however, the service life and replacement must be performed every 15-20 thousand km .
Features of replacement on a car with ABS (ABS)
When installing pads on a Lada Kalina with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) installed, it is important to take into account several nuances.
- Before starting the replacement, you will need to tighten the ABS sensor so as not to damage it when removing the old pads. The sensor is mounted on one screw, which can only be unscrewed using a deep E8 star-head.
- When removing the brake drum from the mount, you should be careful, since there is a built-in ABS sensor disc underneath it. Damage to the disc may cause the braking system to malfunction.
Features of replacement and reasons
We recommend purchasing only high-quality consumables. Poor quality pads can lead to premature wear of the brake disc.
There are many reasons why replacement is necessary.
- The appearance of squeaking in the wheels during braking.
- As the main elements inside the caliper “dry out,” an extraneous sound appears.
- It is mandatory to change elements after purchasing a used vehicle or checking their thickness.
- The wear is so severe that the remaining plate is less than 2 mm .
- Inspection and replacement after winter or once a year .
- When braking, the vehicle stops unevenly.
The described factors should alert the driver and lead to the need to diagnose the brake system and replace the front pads.
The importance of brake fluid level
Before you begin the replacement process, you should definitely estimate the amount of this fluid. If its level is at the maximum, you need to drain a little using a syringe or bulb. Why do this? This is necessary so that when the piston is pulled back, the liquid does not spill out. The fact is that new pads are much thicker than old and worn ones.
For a good result, you need to leave about half of the liquid in the expansion tank.
Tools for changing pads
In order for the replacement of brake pads to be successful, the owner will need to bring to the event the following set of tools and tools:
- A key that allows you to unscrew the wheel rim fasteners.
- Jack and wheel chocks. You can hang the car using a lift, but it is not always available.
- Pliers and flathead screwdriver.
- An open-end wrench with a size of “13” and a head with a size of “17”.
- Clamp (recommended).
- Syringe.
Replacing brake pads cannot take more than an hour of time, provided the owner has experience in maintenance.
Which pads to choose?
Factory consumable components produced by TIIR (visible in the photo) have metal inserts. They have few advantages, except for a tolerable price, but we have already talked about the disadvantages.
A good option for products are pads from the Lucas TRW brand. These products have already been tried and tested by many owners. Reviews about this product are overwhelmingly positive. The quality aspects are also excellent. The packaging has a seal combined with a hologram. This small nuance confirms the authenticity of the product and indicates the serious approach of the specified manufacturer to protecting its product.
When do we make a replacement?
The maintenance documents for the Lada Kalina must indicate the required mileage, after which the front and rear brake pads must be replaced, but in fact this period may be much shorter. A particularly large number of complaints are received about factory components, which wear out before even 15,000 km. Products from quality manufacturers can withstand a longer period, however, the intensity of use of the car, driving style, and the quality of roads can play a role in wear and tear.
You can determine the need to replace the front brake pads on your Lada Kalina based on three main factors, in particular:
- a sharp deterioration in the braking effect when pressing the pedal;
- the appearance of a metallic “squeal” when components rub against the drum;
- serious abrasion of the coating of the front brake pads, which is discovered when disassembling the brake drum.
So, you need to replace these components on your Lada Kalina. Next, we’ll look at step-by-step instructions on how to do it yourself without turning to specialists.
Which ones to choose
Today in auto shops and at the car market you can find pads for Kalina from dozens of manufacturers, some of which are either uncertified products or even fakes made in the nearest gateway.
It is better to buy brake pads in specialized stores, requiring a quality certificate for the purchased product. As for the manufacturer, it is better to give preference to original spare parts.
Front VAZ brake pads for Lada Kalina have catalog number 2110-3501080, and cost between 320-400 rubles. A good alternative for them are analogues from foreign companies such as Pilenga, ABS, Bosch, Ferodo, Master-Sport, Hella, Delphi and others.
The original rear pads for Kalina are numbered 11180-3502090-55. Their cost is 500-650 rubles.
What is needed for replacement?
For this operation you will need a slightly different set of tools. You also need a wheel wrench to remove the wheels. You will also need a 30mm wrench and socket, a 7mm deep socket, a thin flat blade screwdriver and pliers.
Pliers may be needed if you cannot remove the drum without the bearing race. In this case, first unscrew the hub nut, and then remove the drum. On Lada Kalina cars, replacing the rear brake pads is carried out in several stages. Let's look at how to do this below.
How to replace rear elements with your own hands
The car is put in gear, and the wheel chocks are installed at the front. It is also necessary to support one wheel at the rear. Then the car needs to be raised. Naturally, this is done from behind. It is better to slightly loosen the bolts on the desired wheel before lifting. When it comes off the ground, the bolts can be unscrewed calmly and confidently. Then take a wrench and a deep socket 7. With its help, the pins that hold the drum are unscrewed. After this, you can try removing the brake drum. To make this operation easier and faster, WD-40 is sprayed around the protective cap. When everything has settled, we dismantle the element. The entire drum brake mechanism can be seen. Next, the cotter pin is dismantled; it is more convenient to do this with pliers.
In order for the mechanism to stretch, the tool is turned clockwise and a comfortable position for it is found. Then, using pliers, remove the lower spring, which tightens the pads. It is more convenient to do this on the right - grab and pull in the same direction. Then remove the retaining block in the center of the short spring. The right shoe can be easily removed without the need to remove the upper spring. To do this, firmly grasp the center with pliers and move it to the side. At the same time, it is necessary to lift the spring up. The plate under the spring should fall out. Now nothing holds the rear brake pads in place.
“Kalina” (replacement is further carried out without the need for tools) continues to stand on the jack. It is enough to disconnect the retaining spring and remove the plate. Afterwards you can confidently remove the block. Installing new ones is done in reverse order. As for the replacement time, the process will take about an hour if all the necessary tools and accessories are available. Replacing Kalina-2 brake pads is carried out in a similar way. The rear mechanisms remained the same as in the first version.
Lada Kalina Universal › Logbook › Selection of brake discs and pads
Preface Generally speaking, the records have already been recorded for six months; there was no time to complete them. But my thoughts are a little worn out and there will be less text than usual)
Selection of spare parts The reason for the search was wear and tear, but since changing it, I wanted to buy something cooler so that it would brake better.
Full size General view
Discs I looked at various foreign discs - Bremo, ATE and others - some too expensive, others of unclear quality. I thought about taking the perforated ones from sports - 21120-3501070-88 - the price is normal (about 2500), 2 pieces included. But then I read the reviews: sometimes the discs crack, and most importantly, they brake no better than standard ones. Plus, some write about vibrations and hum when braking from 100 km/h. The only plus is better cooling, that is, you can brake more times from 100 km/h - I don’t need it, the standard ones suit me just fine. Therefore, I decided to take regular standard wheels - 21120-3501070-0*. Instead of * there is a manufacturer's number, this changes the price (sold 1 piece): 21120-3501070-00 - 1056 rubles 21120-3501070-01 - 1545 rubles 21120-3501070-02 - 860 rubles I couldn’t find information about the differences in the quality of these discs, so I bought the cheapest, then they cost 733 rubles apiece. The discs came from Autoreal. Moreover, one is preserved, and for some reason the second is not (

Front pads I read about squeaking and braking quality. There were Ferodos from the factory - I was pleased with them, although they creaked sometimes. I already wanted to take the same ones - FDB 527, but I read that TRW brakes better, so I re-ordered them. For viburnum, you need to take TRW GDB 1446 - they are cheaper than the European GDB 469, and better than the GDB 469M (info from here). They cost me 911r, and now 995r. I wrote about my impressions in another post. Briefly: the brake performance is the same as with standard pads.

How to change the front pads on a Kalina
The pads are changed sequentially: first on one side, then on the other. The replacement procedure is as follows:
- Place the car on a level surface with hard surface;
- open the hood;
- use a syringe or syringe to take a little brake fluid from the reservoir into a prepared container (this is necessary if the brake fluid level is close to the maximum);
- place wheel chocks under the rear wheels;
- Use a wheel wrench to loosen the wheel bolts;
- place a jack and lift the car, hanging the front wheel;
- Use a pry bar or a powerful screwdriver to press the pads away from the brake disc, pushing down the piston of the brake cylinder;
- use a screwdriver to bend the plate on the guide for attaching the pads to the caliper;
- unscrew the guide using a 17 wrench, holding it with a 13 open-end wrench;
- fold out the brake caliper;
- remove old pads;
- completely recess the brake cylinder piston using a screwdriver or pry bar;
- Using a socket screwdriver, clean the contact points between the pads and the calipers;
- insert new brake pads LADA “Kalina”;
- return the caliper to its original position;
- screw the guide and bend the locking plate;
- install the wheel, tighten the fastening bolts;
- Lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts with a wheel wrench.
After this, change the pads on the other side, check the brake fluid level and top up if necessary. This completes the replacement of the front pads on the Kalina. All you have to do is pump the brake pedal a few times to get the pads in place, check the brake fluid level and hit the road. For the pads to get completely used, you need to drive about 1000 kilometers with them.
In conclusion, about the important
Replacing the pads on LADA Kalina should only be done as a complete set. This action allows you to avoid incorrect redistribution of braking forces between wheel units, otherwise the car may drift off the trajectory. Immediately after the replacement procedure, the pads will not be sufficiently effective, because they require some time to optimally grind into the disc surface. Also, at first (about 200 km), avoid sharp braking so as not to cause scuffing in the working area of the disk.
Now we are convinced that replacing the pads in the Lada Kalina is very easy. Even an inexperienced owner who will need the tool we have indicated can dare to do this.
We do not recommend skimping on safety and purchasing brake pads for LADA Kalina of dubious origin. Trust only proven brands.
