What is the correct name for a crab in a car?

Sea monsters

Most often, nicknames are given to parts or elements of cars based on their external similarity to some more familiar and familiar things. This happened with the “crab”, which is actually called a longitudinal brace. It received its nickname due to its external resemblance to a crab claw. Although this comparison is only appropriate for old domestic cars, on other cars this bracket may have a completely different shape, not similar to a crab claw. But the name stuck, and now all these parts are called that, regardless of their appearance.

Let's get started

The brace bracket began to be called a “crab” because of the four existing holes for bolts, giving it some resemblance to a claw. You can determine if a crab is broken by the characteristic “crack” that appears in the front of your car. You can look at its condition and determine the scale of the destruction without even lifting the car. We choose the first solution - replacing the crabs on a VAZ 2109 yourself, it’s much cheaper and not presents particular difficulties:

  • First, we purchase a new crab and a set of bolts for it; on old ones, the threads may be torn off
  • First, we roll the car onto a pit or overpass
  • Then you need to put the car on the “handbrake” (parking brake) and support the rear wheels with “shoes” (or wooden blocks to prevent it from rolling away)
  • Raise the front of the car with a jack
  • Remove the bottom protection and bumper
  • During work, you need to remove the stretcher, if you don’t remove it, then you need to make sure that it does not interfere with you

Bolts securing the crab to the platform

  • First, unscrew the remaining mounting bolts, if they did not come out of the “crab” when the car hit
  • Remove the spacer washers one by one
  • We recommend that you immediately count the number of washers removed from each hole and remember the order in which they were installed
  • When screwing on the new “crab”, first do not forget to put all the removed adjusting washers in their places; install the washers in the reverse order
  • Then we screw in the bolts of the crab VAZ 2109, securing the brace bracket in place
  • We tighten them with force, but without fanaticism, so as not to tear them off
  • This completes the replacement of the crab for the VAZ 2109, but it doesn’t always turn out to get off so easy
  • It happens that the platform breaks along with the stretching bracket

How to replace a crab on a VAZ 2115 with your own hands - step-by-step instructions

  • We drive into the pit, put the car on the handbrake, install wheel chocks, and jack up the front end.
  • We dismantle the protection and remove the front bumper.
  • Using a “24” wrench, unscrew the rod nut.

  • After this, you need to unscrew the three bolts securing the crab to the platform and remove it

  • We install the new crab in place and fasten it with bolts.

  • Further assembly is performed in reverse order. Before tightening, we lubricate the fastening bolts with graphite or, in extreme cases, with polish, this will make your life easier in the future.

That's all I wanted to say! As you can see, there is nothing difficult in this work. Now you know what a crab is, why it breaks and how to replace it if it malfunctions. Thank you for your attention and see you again at VAZ Repair.

Lada 21099 › Logbook › Replacing crabs

I haven’t written anything here for a long time, so I’m rehabilitating myself in this post) True, this time we’re not talking about some improvements, but about a breakdown)
Well, I had a bad luck here yesterday: I mean, I’m going to the front of the garage, everything is as usual , I’ve done this 100 times (although probably more), the front wheels are already somewhere at the level of the gate frame, then I give the gas to, so to speak, take off with a running start, and then GRACK! I was a little freaked out by such unhealthy bullshit, I put the handbrake on the car, I ran out, climbed under the car, and saw what happened. At first I thought that I had shuffled with my defense, but oh well, I think it’s not scary. Then I sit back down, drive off, hear shuffling again, but not so strong, I drive the car.

I went outside, smoked, and thought about why this could happen, and why this had not happened before. It turns out that the snow in the area of the front wheels has melted, and there is still a thick layer of it at the back, so the car rolls up, which means there is more load on the front suspension. I look at the gate frame and see a distinct chip and scratch on the left side, I immediately understand that it’s not a matter of protection (besides, it would probably bend down, crumple, but would not have made the sound that I heard)

I start the car, slowly back it up, again I hear that disgusting sound of scraping on metal, I drive it out and park it at the garage.

I look under the front of the car...

As they say, comments are unnecessary, or as it is now fashionable to say “the steering wheel is in trouble” =)

My mood “lifted”, I drove the car back into the garage...Back...

This is actually the very moment when the distance from the crab to that same gate frame is 0.5 centimeters...

The next day (today) 2 new crabs produced by Elada were purchased. I’ve never heard of this company before, but the salesman at the Auto-49 store said that the company is normal, it doesn’t do lefty things ( uv. Moderators, no deliberate advertising).

In general, I’m happy with the purchase, we’ll see how it goes further, and so, the quality of workmanship is very good, the only negative is the red color from hell, now everyone from afar can see that I’m not some kind of Petya, but a “real asshole” (nothing I’m against Singing, so don’t be offended).

Now about the installation: unscrewing pressed and slightly soured nuts is #$^@$#*$! Evil in short, in the process of this more than one Chinese key was broken and more than one cigarette was smoked. I had to go buy an expensive domestically produced key for 200 rubles. This probably took the longest.

This is what we have after removal:

And this is after installation:

In general, such news! After installation I ran it around a bit, everything was ok! The steering wheel doesn’t lead anywhere, the wheels are the same as before, but still, in a week or two I’ll get a wheel alignment. Friends, drive into the garage carefully, and not like me, and clear the snow near the garage on time! )

Taking this opportunity, we replaced the rear brakes with ATE pads and drums (thank you very much to Bata, I couldn’t have done it without him!)

And the last point: Can anyone tell me? I’m driving on an uneven road (small holes, bumps, joints) and I hear rattling sounds in the suspension on the left side, it seems to me that the sound is somewhere in front, for the passengers next to it, that it’s somewhere behind (today I fixed the exhaust pipe better, the sound still does not go away) , tell me, what's the matter? Today I spent the whole day in the hole under the car, but I didn’t find any obvious jambs. I tried to rock the car both front and rear, everything was quiet, but when I drove onto an uneven road, it started to wobble. Who has any suggestions? I’ll try to fix the problem myself first, if that doesn’t work, I’ll go for diagnostics (I’m afraid they’ll scam me out of money), and I’ll also have the wheel alignment done soon.

Crabs, stretch marks, levers!

If I remember correctly, I remembered the spar!

the spar, if my memory serves me correctly, is part of the body. its hard basis, so to speak. this can only be changed by “cutting” - “welding”

I’ll explain: a crab is a crab, forgive me what it’s called in the catalog

Do-it-yourself replacement of silent blocks on a VAZ 21099

Today we will talk about replacing silent blocks on a VAZ 21099 with our own hands. Replacing silent blocks is a more complex job related to the chassis. However, if everything is done correctly (according to the instructions), problems and difficulties should not arise. To make it clearer, I am attaching informative photos and a description of the steps to replace the VAZ 21099 silent blocks.

What tool is needed for replacement:

- Vise. – New VAZ 2109 silent blocks. – Soapy water (detergent or liquid soap). – Gas burner or other fire source. – A piece of pipe of such diameter that the silent block fits freely into it. - A set of keys. - Chisel and hammer. – WD-40.

I recommend carrying out repairs on an inspection pit or a lift.

Replacing silent blocks on a VAZ 21099

1. Unscrew the lower arm. To do this, unscrew using a socket with an extension: the extension nut, the nut attaching to the body, as well as the stabilizer link and two ball joint bolts. It will take a lot of effort to remove stuck and rusted nuts; if that doesn’t work, use WD-400 or heat the connection.

If the extension nut does not unscrew even after all the methods suggested above, unscrew the crab, then clamp it in a vice and try again.

2. Next, clamp the removed lever in a vice and, using a lamp or torch, try to burn the old silent block out of the seat. If this method does not suit you, then you will have to press out the silent block using a special puller or the same vice, but using fire it is easier and faster to do this.

3. After the silent block has burned out a little, remove it with a screwdriver or chisel; it should come out easily.

4. Now you have a place ready for installing a new silent block, which must be thoroughly blown and cleaned of dirt, dust and rust before installation.

5. When everything is ready, you can begin replacing the front suspension silent blocks with new ones. To do this, you will need soapy water, thoroughly treat the seat with a soapy solution, then install a new silent block as shown in the photo and lightly, using a screwdriver, begin to press it into the hole. You can also apply undiluted liquid soap directly into the hole, then the resistance will be much less. It may not work out the first time, but don’t rush to despair, look at what is “not letting in” and where, tuck it in using a spatula, add soap and get to work again.

6. When the silent block goes in halfway, remove the pipe and press everything to the end. Be careful, do not rush, so as not to “bite” the rubber silent block, or install it awry. Don't forget about soap, add more of it.

7. When you have pushed it to the limit, check whether the silent block protrudes equally on each side. Your result should look something like what is shown in the photo.

8. Now it’s time to replace the silent block of the “daisy” lever. Everything is much simpler here, cut off the old ones using a chisel, and then install the new ones in place. Using the same vice, press them into the mounting hole. Finish using milk and setting.

9. When the lever is ready, you can begin assembly.

10. On the other hand, everything is done in the same way.

11. Do the final tightening of the nuts when the car is “on the ground”.

Independent replacement of VAZ 21099 silent blocks was successfully completed. Let us remind you that the last publication on our website was about replacing the idle air control valve VAZ 21099.

What is a “crab” in a car and in what cases does it need to be changed?

Many car enthusiasts, when bringing their car in for maintenance, are faced with a number of professional words that they do not quite understand. Some auto mechanics try to write the most correct and literate names of components, while others use jargon. One of the words found in the vocabulary of specialists is “crab”. And this is not a well-known delicacy. Today we will talk about why it is needed in the design of a car and when the part will have to be replaced.

Will the article be useful? Don't forget to give a "thumbs up"

and
subscribe to the channel
!

The correct name for the “crab” is a longitudinal extension bracket

. I could not find the exact origin of such jargon, but there are certain ideas. Apparently, auto mechanics decided to replace the awkward phrase “stretch bracket” with the simple word “crab”, taking a kind of abbreviation. So why do we need a part with such an extravagant name?

"Crabs" are found on front-wheel drive vehicles and hold the front suspension arm. They ensure proper operation of the system and do not have consumables in their design, but wear out over time. There are products made from two materials on the market

- silumin (an alloy of aluminum and silicon) and steel. Silumin seems to me to be a more preferable option, since it is less susceptible to the influence of high humidity and does not create unnecessary stress on other elements.

The “crab” should be replaced with a new one in several cases

.
Most often it cracks and may not initially show signs of high wear. If you see defects during a visual inspection, it is recommended to replace the part with a new one as soon as possible. If the “crab” has already cracked, then an unpleasant and loud creak will appear when turning
. There are often cases when a cracked element sags under load and begins to touch obstacles on the road.

The main danger posed by a broken “crab” is the possibility of deformation of the entire suspension

. Sometimes the wheel literally opens at speed, which leads to serious trouble. That is why you need to treat the element responsibly and change it if necessary. In the end, I note that most often the “crab” is found on budget cars, especially domestic ones.

Replacement of VAZ 2109 crabs and platforms for them

Crab – bracket securing the car suspension brace

A common problem with “nines” is the destruction of the bracket that secures the front suspension brace of the car, which is located under the front bumper. Replacement of the VAZ 2109 crab is necessary in case of its destruction, in case of accidental bumping into a high stone or curb, as well as cracks due to “fatigue” of the metal. It is made of a rather fragile aluminum alloy silumin, which is easily destroyed upon impact. When the “crab” is destroyed, it is necessary to replace the VAZ 2109 crab, since the front end of the lever loses its fastening, hangs freely in the air, and no longer holds the front wheel of the car in the desired position.

What does this threaten?

As a result of a breakdown, the wheel begins to move backwards or forwards. Further use of the car is simply impossible. If this happens far from populated areas, you can only call a tow truck. Most often, two types of breakdown occur - complete destruction or separation of one bolt, together with a nut, and the threads of the remaining two nuts are stripped. There are also two ways to deal with such a breakdown: perform the entire repair procedure yourself or seek help from a specialized automotive workshop .

Panhard rod Drift Spec, adjustable VAZ 2101, 2102, 2103, 2104, 2105, 2106, 2107, 2121, 2123

Adjustable longitudinal bar (“Panhard rod”) for VAZ 2101, 2102, 2103, 2104, 2105, 2106, 2107 cars on rubber silent blocks.

Thanks to the use of a thick-walled pipe with a diameter of 30 mm in the manufacture of the rod, as well as VAZ 2108 silent blocks, it was possible to increase the rigidity of this suspension element relative to the original.

An adjustable crossbar allows you to adjust the lateral position of the rear axle when installing a lowered suspension

In warehouse in Samara

Why is this detail needed?

“Crabs” are found in front-wheel drive cars, their main task is to attach the front brace of the car to the body. There is a rubber damper in the center of the bracket, and the longitudinal brace is attached to it. This part is an integral part of the front suspension and serves to stabilize the position of the body. The main reason for the breakdown of the “crab” is the wear of the silent block, which ceases to dampen the vibrations of the spacer. As a result, extraneous sounds appear when the car moves.

Also, replacing the “crab” may be necessary if it is mechanically damaged, as a result of hitting an obstacle or an accident. All work to replace these brackets can be done with your own hands, but this will require a repair pit or overpass. The essence of the work is to unscrew a broken or worn part from the body and install a new one in its place.

How to replace the “Crab” with a VAZ 2115 yourself

Specialized fastenings in the VAZ 2115 car, more popularly known as “crab”, quite often require replacement or repair in cars of this brand. The mechanism is a kind of bracket for fastening the extension. The original name comes from its shape. The product consists of a bracket with holes for bolts, which is why this mount looks like a crab.

Today, such a mechanism can only be found in cars of several brands. Quite often, various situations happen with VAZ 2115 cars, resulting in deformation or breakage of the element. Experienced professionals who repeatedly deal with the repair of these car brands recommend that owners treat the car with care so as not to damage the specialized bracket. However, given the state of our roads, this is quite difficult to do.

This is where the backlash usually occurs

Emergency situations and their solutions

Quite often, quite experienced owners of a VAZ 2115 car install a “crab” made of titanium alloys. This solution is highly durable and guarantees a high level of safety at various speeds under conditions of high loads. If damage or cracks occur, it is recommended to move slowly or call a tow truck to deliver the vehicle to a service center.

If the crab is completely torn off, it is necessary to call a tow truck and go directly to the service station so that experienced professionals can weld or completely replace such a spare part. An important condition for operating a vehicle in various situations is the level of damage that determines the ability of the vehicle to move independently.

Extra Strength Crab

Features of performing repairs and self-replacement of the crab on a VAZ 2115

In order to begin independently replacing this part or repairing it, you must have the following tools and materials:

  1. Standard set of sockets or spanners;
  2. Specialized liquid VD-40;
  3. A reinforced pipe, which may become necessary if the fasteners, that is, the bolts on the bracket, are too oxidized.

If the owner wants to carry out independent repairs, then it is necessary to have a specialized welding machine and some experience in using such a unit.

Step-by-step instruction

Experienced service center professionals have created successive steps that will help the owner of a VAZ 2115 independently replace the “crab”:

  • place the vehicle on the pit;
  • turn on the handbrake;
  • install wheel chocks;
  • use a jack to raise the front of the car;
  • dismantle the protection;
  • remove the front bumper;
  • unscrew the rod nut;

  • unscrew several mounting bolts;

  • dismantle the mechanism;
  • install a new element (or a restored old one);
  • tighten the bolts;

  • carry out installation according to the previous principle, but in reverse order.

Recommendations from experts

It is recommended: before finally securing the bracket bolts, they must be lubricated with a specialized product so that they do not oxidize, and in the future this part can be replaced without any problems.

It is important to note that a faulty bracket may not always completely immobilize the vehicle. Thus, if any errors are observed in the functioning of this mechanism, it is important to carry out independent diagnostics or contact experienced specialists.

During the operation of the car, play appears repeatedly, which indicates negative changes that have occurred with the bracket. In such a situation, it is important to inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, replace the faulty mechanism.

How to change crabs on a VAZ 2114

This instruction will be useful not only to owners of “fourteeners”: given the similarity of design, owners of first-generation Samaras can also use the repair work algorithm below.

Before you begin the operations described below, read the Lada 2114 operating manual to remember the correct location of the part, quantity and type of fasteners.

To carry out repair work, the motorist will need:

  • Set of spanners;
  • Container for fasteners;
  • Slotted screwdriver;
  • Spray can VD-40;
  • Hammer (just in case).

It is better to carry out work indoors, namely in a garage with a “pit”. Before starting manipulations to replace the “crab”, you need to turn off the power to the car by disconnecting the battery terminals.

So the algorithm of actions:

  1. We roll the car into the pit. Don’t forget to put wheel chocks under the wheel;
  2. We dismantle the front bumper of the Lada;
  3. Removes engine protection from the bottom of the car;
  4. Unscrew the rod nut;

  5. We unscrew all the bolts of the old fastening or what is left of them. It is important not to lose the remaining washers. The washers have an adjusting function; they need to be placed in the new mount in the appropriate quantity;

  6. We install the new part, tightening the bolts as much as possible. It is important not to overdo it so as not to break the fasteners.

Often, not only the bracket itself breaks, but also the platform on which it is placed. Replacing the mounting pad is not a simple process like the one described above. Most often, the breakdown of the crab platform is characterized by the formation of a deep crack in the body of the part.

For a short period, you can get by with welding. First you need to buy a thick metal plate. Automotive stores sell blanks with pre-welded nuts for “crabs.” Using the substitution method, you need to mark the places of the cuts on the workpiece. The surface of the plate must be cleaned as much as possible from rust: a grinder will do.

To carry out the work, you need to contact a qualified welder who can provide the necessary strength parameters of the seam. When the new platform is welded, follow the steps of the algorithm for installing a new VAZ 2114 crab.

If after the repair the controllability has deteriorated (the car begins to noticeably pull to the side), then immediately contact the service center and do not forget to mention the repair work carried out.

How to replace crabs on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?

Note! When replacing crabs or one crab of some kind, be sure to stock up on new bolts, because the old ones can be deformed and have cracks, and the heads on the bolts can also be torn off (And these bolts constantly turn sour and unscrewing them can be so problematic, which is why mostly the heads come off)!

Removal: 1. First, lift the front part of the car on a jack and secure it well by placing blocks of wood under the sides of the car and for better stability, put something under the levers, just in case (In general, you will need to hang the front part and fix it well, everyone than possible), then slightly loosen the nut that secures the guy wire to the crab (Indicated by a blue arrow) and proceed to unscrew the three bolts securing the crab to the platform (Indicated by red arrows), and when the bolts are unscrewed, carefully lower the crab, completely unscrew the fastening nut stretch marks and take it out and leave the stretch mark, let it hang.

Note! Spacer washers will be installed under each bolt; they will need to be installed in exactly the same places, in the same quantity and exactly as they were, so when you turn out the bolts, carefully remove these washers and remember their location under the bolts!

Installation: The new crab is installed in the reverse order, in this case all its fastening bolts are replaced with new ones and the washers are installed in the same places where they were previously.

Note! Screw in the crab fastening bolts with good force, but we don’t recommend screwing them in very powerfully, they will turn sour and then you simply won’t be able to unscrew them in the future, but there is one But! After removing the crab, inspect the platform to which it is bolted and if suddenly you find cracks and other types of deformation on it, then you will have to resort to replacing the platform with a new one, but by the way, it is not always necessary to change it immediately when a crack is detected, for example, if the crack does not is large, then try welding it and the platform will continue to serve your car faithfully, you just have to keep an eye on it, but if the platform is very deformed, if its nuts are torn off and the bolts securing the crab simply no longer fit, then it will have to be replaced with a new one , to do this, you need to cut out the old platform with a grinder, and buy a new one and weld it by welding, that’s all, the replacement of the platform is complete, but just be sure to weld all the seams well, before welding, be sure to clean the metal from dust and dirt, and so on!

Additionally You can see how to replace it in the video below:

Note! And you can also see how you can strengthen the crab platform on cars of the Samara family and the Samara 2 family in another video, which is also located just below:

Hi all. I’m thinking about buying such a bus, manufactured in 1997, mileage 425 t.km. Passenger 8+1, need to be welded in places, painted, technically it seems to be in normal condition. Long wheelbase, not a sail. My second cousin is selling it.

Tell me - maybe someone owned it, is it worth taking it at all, and how much money is worth giving for it, the preliminary price is 4500 - 5000 USD.

Any advice is appreciated. Now I really need your advice; I am faced with a difficult choice. Thank you.

Why do tractors walk sideways (crab)?

Good afternoon Today we will understand the intricacies of the crab stroke of tractor equipment.

In terms of control method, two types of wheeled tractors can be distinguished:

  1. Classic type, control is carried out by turning the wheels relative to the frame, most often the front wheels.
  2. Tractors are on an articulated frame; the direction of movement is selected by rotating the two frames relative to each other. The most commonplace examples: K-700 (701) and T-150K.

If we talk about the first type, then in the vast majority of cases the front wheels are swivel. But there are tractor models in which all four wheels can turn relative to the frame. It’s about the features of this method of control that I would like to talk about.

The JCB Fastrac and Claas Xerion come to mind as examples. On such tractors, the operator has a choice: which control mode to choose depending on the task being performed.

In the first option, the rear wheels are fixed in a position parallel to the frame, and the front wheels become swivel

. It turns out that the classic mode is familiar to everyone. The behavior of the tractor is predictable for any inexperienced operator.

If necessary, you can enable a mode in which all wheels turn

.
With this option, the behavior of the tractor may seem very similar to how articulated tractors behave. But this impression is deceptive, the frame is solid, while on the T-150K and K-700 control is carried out precisely due to a break in the frame. The wheels immediately turn: the front wheels in one direction, and the rear wheels in the other.
In this mode, maneuverability increases, the turning radius becomes significantly smaller (however, tractors with ShSR win in this parameter).

But there is another mode in which all wheels turn in one direction.

What happens then?
The tractor begins to move in an unusual direction; it moves to the side, at an angle from the longitudinal axis. This is the so-called crab move.
What does it give? For what? What are the benefits? The most common thing is cross-country ability. A slight offset will prevent slipping when moving on a slope. Sliding is compensated by slightly turning all wheels towards the hill.

An important task of the crab drive is to reduce the pressure exerted by the mass of the tractor on the soil.

We all know that wheeled tractors cause significant soil compaction, which can have a detrimental effect on crop yields. In the classic course, the rear wheels follow the track left by the front wheels, further compacting the ground.

Here, look at the following diagram.

With such a “crab” (gentle) movement when performing agricultural work in the field, the wheels of the rear axle do not follow the front ones. One rear wheel runs between the tracks of the front axle, and the second is offset to the side. The pressure exerted by the tractor during crab travel is distributed over a large area, which reduces the specific pressure on the ground.

In this way, we “spare” the soil of our fields from excessive compaction. The turning radius in this mode becomes larger, which causes less damage to the surface layer of the earth.

I will add that if a second pass through the field is necessary, we can turn the “crab passage” in the other direction and we will avoid repeating the old trail.

It may seem that it is not convenient to work this way, but the operator’s chair can be rotated as it suits him. In addition, modern electronic assistants will help keep the tractor in the desired lane.

Well, I’ll add that the crab move will help you maneuver safely when working in the silo.

Crab on VAZ 2114: operation and replacement

Very often, on cars produced by AvtoVAZ, a malfunction occurs such as a breakdown or even complete destruction of the front suspension brace fastening. The crab on the VAZ 2114 is no exception (this is what many drivers call this fastener). The main reason for such frequent breakdowns is the material from which the crab is made, namely various aluminum alloys (like silumin).

If, while driving, a car touches high protruding elements - stones or bricks, with its brace fastening, then in most cases this leads to the destruction of the latter.

It would seem, why did the designers choose this particular material, since crab 2114 could have been made of steel? The answer here is quite simple - this element is made fragile specifically in order to save other, more important and expensive elements of the car suspension when it collapses.

Is it possible to drive with a faulty crab?

In most cases, driving with a faulty brace fastening is impossible. This is caused by the fact that the wheel on the damaged side becomes simply uncontrollable, and movement even at a minimum speed turns out to be extremely difficult.

If the crab is completely broken, you should stop driving the car until it is repaired, and if the breakdown occurs far from home, then call a tow truck.

Cracked crab VAZ 2114

Sometimes a slightly different situation happens - it seems that the mount is not damaged, and the car is driven normally, but at the same time a knocking sound is periodically heard from one of the wheels (especially clearly when going over uneven surfaces).

This may be caused by the fact that the fit of the fasteners on the crab itself has worn out (due to the fact that it is made of fragile material) and backlashes have appeared.

This is very easy to check - you just need to put the car on an overpass or hang it on jacks, and then inspect the mount. If it turns out that backlashes have indeed appeared, then the crab should be immediately replaced with a new one.

Driving a car with a worn-out crab that has strong play can lead to its spontaneous destruction even without colliding with an obstacle (which is extremely dangerous, as it can happen when driving at high speed).

How to replace the crab with a new one?

If signs of wear or damage are detected, it may be necessary to replace the crab with a VAZ 2114. This is quite simple to do and can be done by every car enthusiast.

The only thing you will need is the presence of an inspection hole or overpass and a minimum set of tools:

  • jacks;
  • shoes;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • set of heads with ratchet;
  • 24mm wrench.

Replacing the crab VAZ 2114

The entire replacement procedure is performed in the following order:

  1. We install the car in the pit.
  2. We install the shoes under the rear wheels.
  3. We hang the front on jacks.
  4. We dismantle the protection and front bumper.
  5. Take a 24mm wrench and unscrew the rod nut.
  6. Unscrew the 3 bolts securing the crab.
  7. We remove the destroyed crab.

Dismantling the crab VAZ 2114

After this, we take a new bracket and mount the VAZ 2114 crab in exactly the same sequence, but in reverse order. As you can see, everything is quite simple and does not require much time. If necessary, the entire replacement procedure can be performed even on the road (provided there is a suitable place for this).

What to consider when choosing a new crab?

As stated previously, all front brace brackets are designed to be frangible to ensure the safety of more critical parts when impacted by obstacles.

At the same time, all crabs currently on the market can be divided into the following groups according to the materials from which they are made:

  • silumin;
  • magnesium-aluminum;
  • steel.

New crab VAZ 2114

While the first two types of crabs work on the same principle (they break apart in an accident and differ only in their weight and strength), steel crabs work somewhat differently. They are made of a powerful metal base with a welded steel strip that serves as a traction mount.

The fragile element in this case is the weld - if damaged, it bursts and the entire bracket is divided into two parts.

This design is more reliable (for example, it will not burst while tightening the bolts, which sometimes happens with low-quality crabs), but you should understand that it will “work” only with a strong impact. A collision with insufficient energy to fracture a weld may well be sufficient to damage other suspension components.

Where can I buy?

Usually the “crabs” come in a set along with the bolts that are used to attach them to your iron friend. Most often, car enthusiasts purchase them in nearby stores. Agree, waiting a week for a purchase to be delivered will bring little joy to any driver. However, if the order is ready to be delivered within 24 hours, then there is no point in traveling around the city in search of the right product, which cannot always be found on the counter. It will be enough to make a few mouse clicks to order the one you like on the Internet.

This instruction will be useful not only to owners of “fourteeners”. In fact, the entire “family”, including “eights” and “nines”, is tailored to the same “crabs”, as indicated by the markings on the packaging.
