DIY eyelashes for headlights or how to quickly decorate your headlights?

Simple stylish headlight tuning

With the help of eyelashes you can emphasize the individuality of your car with minimal investment. The stylish and simple accessory began to be used after manufacturers applied a new hood design, which is called “Bed Boy”.

It involves creating an aggressive appearance for the front of the car by covering the upper cut of the headlights with the protruding part of the hood. During the tuning process, changing the hood configuration is quite difficult. It is much easier to install plastic covers on the headlights - cilia, which you can make yourself. They are easy to install and can be removed at any time if necessary. With the hood, such manipulations cannot be performed so quickly and cheaply.

Benefits of overlays

the ability to minimize the gap between the hood and the headlights;

creating an original appearance of the front of the car;

simplicity and low cost of tuning;

Flaws:

some difficulties with fastening;

the likelihood of losing eyelashes when moving at high speeds.

Types of cilia for headlights

You can make your own eyelashes for headlights from the following thin materials:

decorative multi-colored film.

To make your own mounts, you first need to choose a stylish profile for your optics. The contours and color of the eyelashes should fit harmoniously into the design of the car. If necessary, the overlays can be painted in any color.

There are no limits to the realization of design fantasies here. The most common option is overlays that correct the rectangular shape of the headlights towards rounding or vice versa.

To give your car an exclusive, unique look, you need to experiment. Today, eyelashes using LEDs are popular among tuning masters. At night, headlight covers with LED modules create a unique and colorful glow that will stylishly make your car stand out from other vehicles.

Once the desired tuning style is formed, the outline is applied to the material and carefully cut out. Then you can start attaching the eyelashes to the headlights.

The easiest way to attach the pads is to use double-sided tape or sealant. To ensure maximum connection reliability, experts recommend the integrated use of both methods.

Installation recommendations

Since eyelashes are small and lightweight structures, regardless of the material used for their manufacture, there is no need to use any serious fastenings here. The best option for installing eyelashes on car headlights is to use double-sided tape. This is an affordable material that can be purchased at any office supply store. All that remains is to figure out how to properly stick the eyelashes on the headlights.

  • You can glue the element to the headlights immediately after the homemade eyelash has completely dried, or after purchasing a product you like. Gluing two surfaces together is extremely simple. Even beginners in this matter should not have problems with how to decorate headlights;
  • First you need to stick the tape to the headlight unit itself. It is advisable to apply the material along the entire contour of the future eyelash in order to obtain a stronger adhesion;
  • This option of gluing tape will also prevent the creation of empty cavities under the eyelash, under which a head wind can blow and cause the decor to simply fall off at some point;
  • Then the top protective layer is removed from the tape, and the eyelash itself is applied. Do this carefully and precisely along the contours so that no displacement occurs.

There are alternative types of fastening. You can use various fasteners and screws. But they involve drilling the car body or the headlight unit itself. And this is an extremely undesirable event, since problems can arise if the seal in the optics is broken. The minimum is the formation of condensation. Water in headlights has never led to anything good.

Eyelashes are an interesting, original and fairly easy to install tuning element for any car. They do not require large financial expenditures, but they allow you to achieve excellent results in changing the external perception of the car. Buying ready-made eyelashes or making them yourself is a purely individual question. If you are somehow not satisfied with the existing assortment, and you want to do something unusual, then try making eyelashes yourself.

People who have already tried. How do you attach eyelashes to the headlights? I only tried it with tape, it’s no use, you press it with the hood and they immediately start sticking out, it’s not nice and they’ll fall off right away. I haven’t tried other means because I don’t want to damage the headlights.

DIY eyelashes

First we remove the headlight. As a rule, it is secured with four bolts. After dismantling the optics, seal the glass surface with masking tape. Then we prepare four strips of fiberglass and epoxy resin. You should work with epoxy very carefully, as it cannot be completely removed from the surface. Fiberglass along with resin is applied in several stages in thin layers. Each layer must first dry before applying the next for 4-5 hours. In principle, you can apply a thick layer at once. But thin eyelashes look more impressive. After installation, the fiberglass fabric must be pressed well so that it is completely saturated with resin. After laying four layers, cover the workpiece with masking tape and press it with something heavy. Alternatively, sandbags.

It takes at least 10-12 hours for the resin to dry completely. After that, we remove the blank and begin making eyelashes. We draw the outline of the future overlays on the workpiece with a marker and cut out the desired profile.

At this stage, the most important thing is to create a unique shape and style. As an option, you can stick a decorative film on the workpiece to match the color of the car body. Such overlays will fit harmoniously into the design. They may look like real ones, made in a factory. One way or another, you need to experiment. Having made several options, you can choose the most unique one.

To make eyelashes for a headlight with your own hands on the other side of the car, just prepare an identical stencil from durable paper. After you have prepared the desired version of the eyelashes, apply a layer of putty to the workpiece. Then we sand it after drying with sandpaper and prime it.

The final stage of making the overlays is painting. Before this, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface of the workpiece. It should be perfectly even and smooth. Otherwise, unevenness can ruin the entire appearance of the eyelashes. Painting should be done in several thin layers to avoid smudges.

We attach eyelashes to the headlights

The most popular method of attaching headlight covers is using double-sided tape or silicone glue. Some car enthusiasts prefer to use sealant for greater reliability.

First degrease the inner surface of the eyelashes and glass. Then we glue tape to the linings and carefully apply the cilia to the surface of the headlight. To secure it firmly, you can fix the overlays with masking tape for several hours.

General information about eyelashes

Eyelashes are small pads that fit tightly to the headlight and cover its part (usually the top) . The main function is decorative: such elements are used to visually change the shape of the optics, but they also serve as protection against mechanical damage and environmental influences if you are not driving very carefully.

In addition to the variety of shapes and colors, the main parameter for classifying eyelashes is the material of manufacture. The most popular eyelashes are made from self-adhesive film, PVC and fiberglass. To understand which material is better to choose, we will consider the pros, cons and difficulties of working with each of them.

What are eyelashes for headlights and why are they needed?

For those who do not know what eyelashes for headlights are and their purpose, we will explain, eyelashes for headlights are small narrow linings that give the headlights, and the car as a whole, a different appearance. Moreover, such overlays must be of the correct size so that the operation of the optics is not disrupted. Such accessories allow you to transform semicircular optics into rectangular ones and vice versa. Also, such overlays additionally enhance the optics and protect the glass from impacts from small stones and gravel.

For those who consider this type of appearance tuning to be insignificant and ineffective, we advise you to park your car next to a car whose optics have been tuned using cilia. And you will feel the difference. Therefore, even such a minor tuning accessory will help you change the look of your car. Make it unique. Sometimes truly unique examples of auto tuning are born from simple little things.

Varieties

Having decided to do a little tuning for your car, you should start by choosing the material itself. There are several types of products on the market. At the same time, the eyelashes for car headlights differ in the material of manufacture and functional purpose, but all of them can be easily installed with your own hands. When choosing eyelashes from film or plastic, you should determine in advance what effect you want to get and what you are striving for when doing such tuning yourself. Some eyelashes for headlights can serve a purely protective role, others a decorative one. As a result, all products are divided into 3 categories.

  1. Protective eyelashes. These products serve a more practical than decorative role. Their main task is to provide additional protection for body elements and the headlights themselves. They take on mechanical loads, impacts from various small stones and debris flying from the road and from cars in front. This is a great way to extend the life of head optics and prevent damage to the housing. Eyelashes should not be seen as a panacea for all attacks, but they can make their contribution to protection. For the manufacture of such elements, transparent thermoplastic is used. It is easy to apply different patterns and designs to the material, which will add decorative properties to the eyelashes.
  2. Chrome plated. Their main function is to give the car an exclusive and unusual appearance. Chrome parts always look good inside and outside the car. If the car itself already has some chrome-plated parts, the eyelashes will harmonize perfectly with them. For the linings, a different base is used, which is coated with chrome. And here it is extremely important that the coating is done with high quality and using good materials. Otherwise, the chrome layer will quickly wear out and lose its original appearance.
  3. Plastic elements. The most common eyelashes are in the form of dense extensions or thinner films. Plastic is very affordable, versatile, and varied in appearance. This reveals the main advantages of plastic or polymer eyelashes. For novice tuning fans, these elements will be the optimal choice. They can be easily selected for different cars to achieve the desired result. Already painted eyelashes are available for sale, as well as unpainted structures, which the car owner can decorate at his own discretion.

Adhesive tape

Today you can find any colors and textures of self-adhesive film to make eyelashes for headlights from it.

The easiest way to make eyelashes is to use “self-adhesive”. To work with the film, no special skills or tools are required, it is cheap, you don’t have to paint it, you can choose any color, you don’t need to remove the headlights, and the entire process of making eyelashes will take you no more than 40 minutes.

It would seem that these are continuous advantages, but they are also disadvantages at the same time. The film is inexpensive, but it looks cheap on the car, does not require painting - and does not exactly match the body color, it is easy to use - and therefore anyone can do the same.

In addition, the service life of the film on the headlights is limited: the edges of the “self-adhesive” after washing lift up and tear, dirt gets clogged into scratches from stones, and after only 3 months of driving on Russian roads, such tuning will not improve, but will spoil the appearance of the car. Keep in mind that 10 years ago, when stores were not yet overflowing with car accessories, tuning studios were developed only in the capital, and ordering tuning via the Internet was just becoming a reality, eyelashes made from film could cause admiration and a desire to “do the same.” Today it is difficult to surprise anyone with them.

How to glue eyelashes from film

To make such elements yourself, you need the following kit:

When making eyelashes, it is recommended to follow a certain sequence of actions.

Trying on the layout will save not only material, but also time for redoing an unsuccessful eyelash

Of course, changing the appearance of a car for just 100–200 rubles (the cost of a sheet of film) is a big temptation. But if you want to get a high-quality result, we advise you to overcome this temptation. The film is suitable for beginners for their first experiments with the appearance of a car, and will also be very convenient for “trying on” the shape and color of a future eyelash on a headlight.

Carbon film coatings do not decorate the car, but give it a cheaper look

I would like to separately mention film a la carbon: we do not recommend using it even for the first experiments. Real carbon is a unique material, lightweight and durable. Due to its high cost, it is used by factories only in premium-segment cars, and is also used in preparing sports cars for professional competitions, in which even a slight reduction in the weight of a car can improve acceleration dynamics, save a fraction of a second and influence victory. Products covered with “carbon” film have little resemblance to real carbon fiber and give themselves away immediately, reducing the cost of the car’s appearance.

Using vinyl and tinted film for manufacturing

This method is the simplest and fastest, and when used, it takes 5-10 minutes to make products. True, they will look worse than those that require a lot of time and a large amount of materials to produce.

Making eyelashes from film is quick and easy

If you narrow the headlights using a black film, then such eyelashes will look harmonious on cars of the same color, but not very well on cars of a different color. But this problem can be easily solved, since finding a film that harmoniously matches the color of the car today is not at all difficult.

Having opted for vinyl film used for car wrapping, the driver can give free rein to his imagination. After all, its color range, sold through car dealerships, is very wide. And eyelashes cut from carbon-fiber vinyl will look very original.

How to make eyelashes for headlights from film: video

Among other things, headlight light does not pass through the vinyl film, while the tint film does. And in this case, the material for making eyelashes can be picked up near workshops that specialize in wrapping cars with vinyl - they always have a lot of waste.

Before you start making eyelashes, you need to make a cast of them. For this purpose, the upper part of the surface of the headlights should be covered with masking tape. This must be done so that it does not reach the central part a little. After this, using a pencil or marker, a drawing of future eyelashes is applied to the tape. It should be taken into account that too wide eyelashes can significantly reduce the luminous flux of headlights. And they won’t look very stylish.

Next, the tape is cut along the drawn lines. After this, you need to move some distance away from the car and look at what the eyelashes look like from different angles. If necessary, necessary adjustments should be made.

If everything is satisfactory, then the tape is carefully removed and the non-adhesive side is applied to the tape glued to the second headlight. The outlines of the template are copied onto it and the second set of cilia is cut out. The tape removed from both headlights is pasted onto the film. To do this, select the side on which there is no transparent protection. Now you can cut eyelashes from the film with scissors.

The resulting products are applied with the adhesive side to the surface of the headlights, which is previously degreased with a solvent. If the shape of the headlights is too convex, then the film must be molded during the sticker process. A hair dryer is used for this purpose.

What you can make from plastic with your own hands

Plastic eyelashes look more presentable. The cost of a sheet of plastic is low, and you can buy it at a building materials store or at a manufacturing advertising agency. A wide selection of colors allows you to choose the material to match the color of the car and do without painting, and making eyelashes does not require any special skills from you. You will have to spend more time and effort on such eyelashes, since it is necessary to dismantle the headlight. For special tools, you will need a hair dryer.

Application of plastic

A more effective and impressive option would be a plastic eyelash. Buying material will not be difficult. Plus, there are a number of studios where you can get your decor done quickly and professionally. Moscow alone has dozens of such tuning studios.

But since the price is high, we do everything ourselves.

How to make eyelashes for headlights with your own hands: the best options

Let's look at proven methods for making eyelashes and the features of their implementation:

Fiberglass eyelashes

Fiberglass eyelashes are one of the most popular options.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

Work very carefully so as not to spoil the workpiece. The result should be two eyelashes. But don't rush to attach them.

The workpiece is removed

The next task is processing.

Final result

Plastic eyelashes are one of the most budget options

Most car enthusiasts choose this method due to the low costs of materials and the minimal complexity of the work. It is unlikely that you will be able to buy ready-made plastic blanks, so they will have to be cut from a sheet of plastic (it is much easier to find). Large size PVC sheets can be found in automotive stores or markets, advertising agencies or art stores. It does not matter what format the product will have. The main thing is that its thickness is about 2-3 millimeters. The advantage of thin plastic is ease of processing.

As soon as the material is purchased, decide on the future shape of the eyelashes. Make a sample and cut out the finished part for tuning. Proceed carefully so that no unnecessary burrs remain on the part. Upon completion of the work, the surface of the product must be carefully sanded and sanded. The big advantage of this method is the ability to choose the shape of your own and change the color without using paint or a spray gun. All that is required is to apply the self-adhesive film of the desired color. Please note that before attaching the eyelashes, it is important to thoroughly clean, degrease and dry the surface of the headlight. To make the overlays look natural, take the time to choose the right type of plastic. Ideally, it should bend well and be of small thickness. The more natural the eyelashes look on the car, the better. If desired, the shape of the eyelashes can be changed - just bend them slightly upward. For these purposes, you can use a hairdryer (construction or regular).

Plastic eyelashes

Headlight covers made of plastic are the simplest and most affordable option. They will not require expensive components and will not take a lot of time and effort. It is unlikely that you will be able to buy special plastic blanks, but a small sheet of plastic will be easier to find. First of all, you should look in auto stores and car markets. If you can’t find it, contact art stores and advertising agencies. There, PVC sheets are often used for painting and printing. In principle, any polymer with a thickness of 2-3 mm can be used.

Thin plastic is easy to process. In order to make eyelashes, you need to decide on the shape of the tuning elements, draw them on the plastic and cut them out. Try to cut evenly so as not to leave burrs on the workpiece. The edges of the workpiece need to be sanded and sanded . If desired, you can change the color of the eyelashes using self-adhesive film. Before attaching the finished eyelashes to the car, the headlights must be degreased and dried.

In order to make “natural” eyelashes, and not just extensions, you need a different plastic. It should be thin and bend freely so that the headlight covers look natural. If you want to change the shape of the workpiece, curl the eyelashes upward coquettishly, then use a hairdryer; the heated plastic will easily change the shape according to your desire.

Fiberglass

For several reasons, this is the most difficult execution option: there is no ready-made material (the trim will have to be sculpted from scratch), the headlight must be dismantled, and painting is required. But the result is worth the effort: if you set out to make eyelashes from fiberglass, you will end up with a high-quality, durable product.

Easy way to make, paint and install

To make fiberglass eyelashes we need the following set of tools:

We dismantle the headlight and begin the process of installing the eyelashes.

And then we work according to the standard scheme, which was described above. We degrease, apply putty, wait until it dries, and sand. Degrease, prime, sand. We degrease, paint and varnish, wait until it dries.

It is easier to work with a removed headlight, but you can do without dismantling if you cover the adjacent elements of the car with film. Choose a thick film - thin epoxy resin will corrode.

On the dried layer we apply a new layer of resin and fiberglass according to the same scheme Eyelashes are drying, and the owner of the car is impatiently waiting for the result of his work. We remove the fiberglass eyelashes for final processing. We trim the eyelashes, look at the result. This is what the eyelashes look like after puttying and sanding.
