Replacing lamps in the license plate illumination on a Lada Granta

By default, on a car of the Lada Granta Liftback family, the license plate is illuminated by two C5W incandescent lamps, with an intercontact distance of 39 mm.

Despite the doubled number of lamps, standard lighting is not enough to recognize the letter symbol of the side sign. Often, owners independently install other lighting fixtures, such as LEDs.

Let's take a closer look at how to replace lamps and install custom license plate lighting on a Grant Liftback.

Topic: Resolved: License plate lights do not light up, fuse is intact

The license plate light bulbs do not light up, I took out the old light bulbs, they were black, I replaced them with new ones, they still do not light up, I checked the fuse, it is working. So I guess there is no mass? Where to look for it?

Sequence of actions to independently replace the backlight of the Grant Liftback license plate

  1. We place the car on a flat platform, secure the rear wheels with wheel chocks, and engage first gear;
  2. When safety measures have been taken, open the hood, remove the terminal from the battery to avoid a short circuit in the circuit;
  3. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, unscrew two screws one at a time and remove the assembled lamp housings;
  4. We disconnect the blocks with wires, remove the standard lamps;
  5. We carry out troubleshooting, inspect the contacts, and clean them if there is oxidation;
  6. We install new LED diodes, check their functionality, and connect the battery terminal.

Replacing the Grant Liftback license plate light bulb has been completed.

Note to the driver. Before installing LED lamps, wipe the surface of the base with a rag.
Fatty sweat from the fingers contributes to increased operating temperature, overheating, and premature wear.

Replacement algorithm

  • We turn off the engine, squeeze the handbrake;
  • Open the back door;
  • Depending on the model year, the sequence of actions differs. In the first generation (until 2021), unfasten the casing flap and provide free access to the back of the optics. In the second generation, remove the plastic latch, remove the lamps, unscrew the three nuts.

The type of lamp is indicated on the flashlight body next to the socket of each socket.

Reviews

Positive
1.Victor: I’m happy with the LED diodes, the quality of the license plate lighting is excellent, visible from afar. My recommendations to motorists.
2.Vyacheslav: on the advice of his comrades, I bought LEDs, since I once received a fine for insufficient lighting of the room and a dirty surface. I installed it myself, no problem. To be sure, I read the instructions twice.
3.Kirill: this time I decided to tune the lighting of the Lada Granta Liftback license plate. Instead of standard lamps, I installed LEDs. A friend and I connected within ten minutes, it works properly. I use LED backlighting as additional lighting when passing backwards.
4.Vasily: It’s a pity that the Granta is not equipped with LED diodes in the basic configurations. Today this is not a luxury, but a necessity.
5.Sergey: a week ago I connected LEDs to illuminate the rear license plate. I use it often, the lighting is good, no problems. My recommendations.
6.David: bought the car second hand, second owner. I got it from the previous one in good condition, tuned, with LED diodes installed on the rear.
7.Vladlen: after buying the car, I immediately ordered replacement of the standard lamps at the dealership and installed LEDs.
Negative
1.Gennady: I can’t give a positive assessment to the LEDs, because after two months of use, two lights burned out. I installed the standard lighting back.
2.Ignat: I don’t recommend buying cheap LEDs, including those from China. Their service life is no more than six months, after which they burn out. It's better to use standard lamps.
3.Georgy: I enjoyed the bright lighting of the license plate for three months, after which the LED diodes burned out. I installed the original lighting back.

Conclusion

LED license plate lighting is clearly necessary, both from a safety point of view and as an additional source of light when reversing a car. Not all owners can afford to buy parking sensors.

Negative reviews are largely unfounded. The reason for premature wear is low-quality consumables and the purchase of cheap fakes. Draw your own conclusions.

Good day to all guests and subscribers!

Even at the beginning of the life history of my car, there were the following topics on replacing light bulbs (if anyone is interested, you can read it): - DRLs and headlights - in the headlight turn signals - in the cabin

Well, there was also the installation of PTF, the light in the trunk with a diode strip, also with the replacement of the bulb with a similar one in the cabin.

Today, the traffic lights/brake lights have received this attention! I still don’t change the tradition, I use lensed diodes from MTF P21/5W.

PS Let me remind you about money - MTFs are quite expensive, 500 rubles each, depending on the type of lamp.

PPS Night photos! In principle, the light itself is clear that it is a little more red, because lamps with incandescent filaments are transparent and the color is given to them by the body of the flashlight... According to stopari, the focusing in the photo turned out to be disgusting... But MTF is just a little brighter.

Thanks for the link! :-))

Does anyone have a link from Ali to order these red MTF diodes? Then they work normally, but some people write that something starts to blink?

Ali does not and did not have MTF LEDs. Because they are not Chinese, but Korean.

Ali has Vanssi - good LEDs, 2 years warranty. They are bright and of fairly high quality, I have lamps in my turn signals from this company. They work without any complaints.

Here is an option for the Granta sedan. When ordering, please specify "red" 2 X RED/White 1157 P21/5W Bay15d S25 21SMD 3535 High Power LED Brake Light Bulbs s.aliexpress.com/riqMrERN (from AliExpress Android)

It would be cheaper from China

That’s just it, good lamps in China now cost the same money! With the exception of small ones, in the number plate illumination.

And now our prices are even higher, you can easily throw 45% on top, if not more.

Don’t tell me! Much is much cheaper than ours, for example: controllers, led strips, diodes. Tidy, etc. Also stabilizers And much more! Delivery to Blagoveshchensk 20 days.

Are you reading my messages or not?

I know what is sold in China! I buy and use what is sold in China.

I also have expensive lamps from China in my turn signals.

I will no longer buy lamps here, not because MTF are bad, but because they are expensive. Previously, MTF cost 500 rubles per lamp, now it is 950 rubles. In turn, the Chinese Vanssi have already appeared, and their products cost 500 rubles in any case.

It could be cheaper, but it won’t be the same...

What did you do to prevent the diodes from blinking in the license plate? For me, as soon as they heat up, literally a minute passes, and they immediately start blinking.

I bought normal LEDs!

Yours seems to be very critical of tension.

If they blink, it means the diodes have already flashed... And you can only throw them away.

And on new ones, if they are the same... Then put a resistor on each of the lamps. Whether you connect a resistor to + or to - it doesn’t matter. You can sit and see what will shine well and reduce the load optimally.

Instructions for replacing the lampshade

An unlit NC may result in a fine from the traffic police, so it is worth keeping an eye on its serviceability. If a lamp burns out, then replacing the license plate light is not difficult (video author: Dmitry Mitrofanov).

To do this you need to do the following:

  • Open the luggage compartment, through which you can get to the fastenings of the NC lighting unit.
  • To remove the block, you need to pry it off from the left side with a flat-head screwdriver, carefully releasing the latch that holds it. If the lampshade is held in place by screws, then unscrew them.
  • By pressing on the lamp on the right, it should be moved to the left. After several clicks, the product is freely removed from the socket.
  • The unit is pulled out along with the power wires that need to be disconnected. This is done by pressing the latch, which secures the plug with the wires.
  • After turning the light bulb counterclockwise, it is removed along with the base. A new product is installed in its place.
  • Then everything is assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. Before screwing in the screws, it is advisable to coat the holes and threads with silicone grease, which will protect the product from corrosion.

After replacement, the NC lighting should be checked.

Regarding the diodes being too bright (in flashlights): excess brightness is removed by adding a resistor with the required number of Ohms. There are diodes in the DRL itself, they look beautiful. DRLs do not have a lighting function as such, they are simply a designation of the vehicle or vehicle dimensions. Installing diodes in the near side is not an option, because The headlight itself is not designed for them; all the re-reflection of light rays comes from the filament. It’s easier to buy new optics tailored for diodes, but it’s not worth the investment for our cars. The downside of diodes is lighting in bad weather.

Determining the possible reason for the lack of license plate illumination

There are various reasons why an emergency situation may not be covered.

To identify them, turn off the ignition and perform the following steps:

  • Using a clean napkin, you need to wipe the lampshades from dirt and moisture to identify whether there is dimming of the lamps, condensation, or deformation of the plastic from exposure to high temperatures;
  • The serviceability of the wiring and fuses is checked by turning on the low beam; if at least one light is on, then the problem is not with them. If the light bulb lights up even temporarily when you tap on the flashlight, then you need to secure the light bulb in the socket.

New lighting elements
Thus, the reasons for faulty NC lighting may be the following:

  • the lamp burned out;
  • the lamp is poorly secured in the socket;
  • the fuse has failed;
  • the integrity of the wiring is compromised;
  • no power supply;
  • there is no “mass” on the body;
  • weak contact in the mounting block.
