THERE is a fairly common misconception that a station wagon can carry heavy loads that a sedan or hatchback cannot. In fact, the gain is only in the volume of cargo, and the difference in carrying capacity, if we talk about the compact class, as a rule, does not exceed a couple of tens of kilograms. The Priora station wagon has a carrying capacity at the level of its Western counterparts - 505 kg. But compared to its brothers - the sedan and hatchback - it increased by only 15 kg.

However, even because of this small difference, the designers had to slightly change the suspension settings. And as a result... the car's driving performance has become worse.

...Roads in the Kaliningrad region, as in any other part of Russia, are far from ideal. However, the station wagon's suspension copes with potholes more or less tolerably. But a series of gentle “waves” on the asphalt made our car sway so much that it was time to stock up on seasickness pills. Actually, this is a long-standing disease of models of the “tenth” family, but the “Priora” sedans and hatchbacks have already recovered from it. And here’s a surprise – on the station wagon, the chronic illness made itself known again. The reason is the unsuccessfully selected characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers. Therefore, in more or less serious turns, the Priora does not perform well and reluctantly reacts to the rotation of the steering wheel - first it almost completely selects the suspension travel, and only then with a strong trim on board it goes into a turn.

Representatives of AvtoVAZ did not argue with this opinion about the driving performance of the station wagon. We agreed that it is necessary to improve the behavior of the car on the road, to more carefully select the characteristics of springs and shock absorbers - according to engineers, this work is already underway.

When assembling the engines, American-made parts and components were used:

  • 39% lighter connecting rod and piston group - manufactured by Federal Mogul;
  • The timing belt and tensioner pulley are from Gates Rubber Company.

The engines are powered by a standard VAZ 5-speed manual transmission with a reinforced clutch. The gearbox drive is made on closed type bearings.

Chassis

The chassis is structurally a long-proven, but somewhat modernized, “figure-of-eight”. The independent front suspension of the VAZ 2171 - McPherson with barrel springs - is made according to a scheme with straight forged arms and diagonal reaction rods. At the rear there is a torsion beam with new shock absorbers and springs that are stiffer than those of the sedan. Anti-roll bars are installed at the front and rear. According to experts, the chassis of the VAZ 2171 Priora station wagon is ideally suited to the domestic road surface. Its stability is not affected by changes in the profile of suburban highways, and you can drive along a road covered with potholes without slowing down.

Important! During vigorous maneuvering at high speed, the body begins to sway violently, but this driving style is not the standard mode of a family station wagon.

  • “Lux” is the most rich in functionality. When analyzing geometric parameters, it should be understood that some of them, such as the wheelbase, remain unchanged, while others will depend on the type of body.

The general characteristics of the car are as follows (with the exception of the coupe body):

  • wheelbase - 2475 mm (for sedan cars - minus 5 mm);
  • front wheel track - 1440 mm;
  • rear wheel track - 1410 mm.

A car with a hatchback body has the following individual characteristics:

  • total length of the car - 3905 mm;
  • front overhang - 770 mm;
  • rear overhang - 660 mm.

The Priora variant with station wagon and sedan bodies has the following characteristics:

  • total length of the car - 4040 mm;
  • front overhang - 740 mm;
  • rear overhang - 830 mm.

A car with a coupe body has the following indicators:

  • the total length of the car is 4210 mm in the basic version or 4243 mm in the more expensive version;
  • wheelbase - 2492 mm.

But the manufacturer does not indicate the car’s overhangs as a sportier option.

Analyzing the presented indicators, the Lada Priora with a hatchback body is better than other options that allow the use of a ground clearance of 165 mm. With a short body, a large wheelbase allows for good cross-country ability. The only warning for the driver is the need to carefully park near high curbs, especially if the car is fully loaded.

Difficult to drive off-road

A car with a coupe body, due to its long wheelbase and large front overhang, cannot be used as a conqueror of forest roads and country lanes. This is still a purely asphalt car. At the same time, you need to be careful about both large potholes and overcoming artificial bumps. Priora has no protruding elements or inconveniently placed components that could negatively affect the maintenance of ground clearance.

But with standard suspension elements, you can reduce the ground clearance by 20 mm when the car is fully loaded. A fully loaded Priora can easily hit an element protruding above the road, such as a speed bump, so you need to force the obstacle with extreme caution.

“Lada Priora” in a new role

The “Priors” family now has a complete set - a station wagon has been added to the produced versions of the model with sedan and hatchback bodies. Moreover, changes occurred not only with the car body. COMPETITION in market conditions is a great thing! It seems that Russian automakers have finally begun to understand this. At least the “Lada Priora” station wagon, even with a purely “theoretical” acquaintance, clearly differs in a positive direction from similar models in a similar price segment. In the “Lux” package, for example, rain and light sensors are installed here. In cars of similar cost, you won’t even get such equipment as an option. Well, the VAZ station wagon is already equipped with climate control, ABS, electric windows and alloy wheels in the basic version.

Once inside the cabin, I almost reflexively noticed the quality of its build. After all, on the Priora sedan, which I had the opportunity to test two years ago, the glove box was difficult to close, the exterior mirrors vibrated, and the hatch for transporting long objects located in the back of the rear seat jammed.

And in general, everything there somehow creaked suspiciously and did not inspire any confidence. Therefore, with particular passion, I walked my hand over the dashboard and interior trim. But this time I didn’t find any outright hackwork: the gaps between the panels and interior parts became smoother and smaller, nothing in the cabin seemed to creak.. Well, you can get under way.

I have a presentiment of how knowledgeable people are trying to pull me back, to stop me: they say, tell me about the main thing - about practicality, the volume of the luggage compartment! After all, this is a station wagon! And you’re on your way right away...

Modifications of Lada Priora until 2013

VAZ 2170 Lada Priora I generation cars have the following body options: 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback and station wagon, and 3-door coupe. Depending on the year of manufacture and configuration, engine power may vary, which looks like this.

5-door hatchbacks have been produced since 2008. Depending on the configuration, they are equipped with:

  • 80-horsepower 8-valve engine, delivering the same speed and fuel consumption characteristics as in the case of a sedan equipped with the same engine;
  • 16-valve engine with 89 hp, which produces the same speed for a hatchback and consumes the same amount of gasoline as a sedan with the same engine;
  • A 98-horsepower 16-valve engine, thanks to which the hatchback completely matches the speed and consumption characteristics of a sedan with the same power plant.

With a station wagon everything is simpler. From the very beginning of production, it had only one, but the most powerful engine at that time, producing 98 l/s, which accelerated the car to 183 km/h and consumed 7.2 liters of gasoline per 100 km. paths in a mixed cycle. Thus, despite the large cargo capacity of the station wagon, its rated speed remains the same as that of other Priors in a different body version, but with the same engine, since the curb weight is the same for all modifications. Probably, when fully loaded, the station wagon will show slightly lower speed or higher fuel consumption characteristics.

Engine Lada Priora 2010, coupe, 1st generation

Since 2010, Priora has received another modification - a three-door coupe-hatchback. Everything with him is also quite simple, because... It is equipped with a 98-horsepower 16-valve engine, giving a top speed of 183 km/h, consuming 7.4 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the combined cycle, i.e. slightly more than all other body modifications. As you can see, the station wagon and coupe do not have such a wide engine variation as the 5-door hatchback and sedan, since cars of such a body are not designed for wide sale, but for specific needs: sports and motor tourism. By the way, the creators of Priora had the idea to launch a convertible into series, but reasonably considering that it would not find its buyer, they abandoned this idea.

How long does a gas tank last?

With the maximum filling of the gas tank, the Lada Priora, powered by AI-95 (according to the passport!) will travel:

  • 438 km in the city;
  • 767 km on the highway;
  • 597 km combined cycle.

However, the driving range on a full tank is given by us as a rough estimate, since depending on the configuration and modification it may vary slightly, although in all cases the volume of the gas tank is the same: 43 liters.

Inside we are greeted by a new panel with a pleasant design. The car has a massive 4-spoke steering wheel with a VAZ emblem and an updated instrument panel. Now the speedometer scale is in the center, and the tachometer is on the left. The center console has a wide silver insert. Also, according to the AvtoVAZ classic, there is a dial clock and cable “twisters” for the stove. For blowing, two deflectors are provided with the ability to adjust the direction and intensity of the flow. Luxury trim levels can accommodate a 7-inch multimedia display, which also displays a signal from the parking sensors. Reviews note that the display does not have a very good location. To look at it, you have to bend over and take your eyes off the road. The screen also glares in the sun. The font is unreadable.

Luxury versions also feature heated seats, electric windows, adjustable mirrors and air conditioning. As for the seats, they cause a lot of complaints from owners. The VAZ-2171 is equipped with hard and uncomfortable seats without pronounced supports. At long distances, the neck becomes very stiff and the back hurts.

The dimensions of the Priora station wagon, after restyling, have changed slightly due to new bumpers. So previously the length of the car was 4,330 mm, now it is 4,340 mm. It is also worth noting that the ground clearance of the Lada Priora station wagon is 5 mm greater than that of the sedan and hatchback and is equal to 170 mm. This difference is explained by the reinforced suspension, since the station wagon is designed not only for transporting passengers, but also for transporting all kinds of cargo. About the trunk of the Lada Priora station wagon (volume, dimensions, capabilities)

Currently, Lada Priora is available in three body types: sedan, hatchback and station wagon.
The latter attracts buyers with its practicality, because the large luggage compartment allows not only to transport large volumes of cargo, but can also be transformed into a comfortable bed for an overnight stay. According to the technical specifications, the trunk volume of the Lada Priora station wagon is 444 liters, and with the rear seat backs folded down it increases to 777 liters (to the level of the windows). According to the measurement method of the ZaRulem magazine, it turned out to be only 416 liters. If we talk about power plants, in general they are quite reliable (at least when compared with the “decimal” ones). The timing system is belt driven. The first Priors station wagon

appeared on sale back in 2009, two years after the start of sales of sedans. Lada Priora station wagon is the most spacious and roomy car of the entire Priora family. However, the length of the station wagon is 1 centimeter shorter than the sedan, but longer than the hatchback. At the same time, the wheelbase of all three body options is the same.

Suspension characteristics

The Priora's chassis was designed for smooth driving over bumps and obstacles, as well as driving along a country road. Of course, the VAZ-2170 is not an SUV, but it can easily go through many places. The front part of the suspension is independent, and the rear part is semi-independent, which makes the car softer.

Many owners almost immediately replace the anti-roll bar arms along with the struts with a sports kit - so that the car does not wobble when making a sharp turn. Telescopic shock absorbers consistently dampen vibrations when passing obstacles, so there will be no problems with it. VAZ-2170 is a front-wheel drive car.
