The panel located in front of the driver, containing a set of warning lamps, is called a panel.
It has another name - torpedo and consists of the following components:
- The unit that records the speed of the car – the speedometer.
- A device that keeps track of the number of revolutions - a tachometer.
- Two indicators: coolant temperature and fuel level.
- Indicator lamps of different colors.
- Six separate lamps responsible for illumination.
- A number of backup sockets where lamps can be turned on.
- One red block. On the electrical diagram it has X
- Another white block, marked X
Europanel for VAZ 2110 Panel for VAZ 2110 old model
On the VAZ 2110 there are 2 types of dashboards: old model and Europanel.
The differences between them are as follows:
- old panels have a symmetrical arrangement of devices;
- In the Euro device, the fuel gauges and the amount of heating of the coolant are shifted to the right.
Arrangement
So, what can you see on the instrument panel in this car? The combination consists of several components:
- antifreeze temperature indicator in Celsius;
- tachometer - number of revolutions of the power unit;
- right and left turn indicators;
- speedometer - vehicle speed;
- fuel reserve - the volume of fuel in the tank;
- image of a gas station - a signal about the need to refuel;
- control indicator for starting dimensions;
- brake fluid level indicator;
- starting high beam headlights;
- knob for adjusting the clock;
- display with total and daily mileage;
- alarm control indicator;
- clock screen;
- battery charge level;
- check engine - indicates an engine malfunction;
- indicator indicating the handbrake is engaged;
- oil pressure level;
- choke light - only available on carburetor engines.
Device
In this case, the instrument cluster on the VAZ 2110 includes:
- Tachometer;
- speedometer;
- Fuel level indicator;
- Coolant temperature gauge;
- Indicator lamps in the amount of 12 pieces;
- 6 instrument panel suspension lights;
- Reserve socket for control lamp;
- A pair of terminals for connecting wires.
Tidy pinout
As for the instrument panel, two types are used for the VAZ 2110 model. It all depends on the year of the car as there is an old version and an updated version.
- In old panels, devices are located symmetrically.
- The new instrument panel is characterized by two indicators being shifted to the right side - the coolant temperature and the fuel level in the tank.
Before you begin to solve the problem yourself, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the pinout of the instrument panel on the VAZ 2110. In other words, you should understand where which wiring leads, what it is intended for, what fuses are available, and so on.
All this can be easily found out using the information from the instruction manual. Having such visual literature at hand and the car in front of your eyes, you can correct typical dashboard faults without the help of specialists and special knowledge in electronics.
Force majeure with shield
The abundance of all kinds of indications often leads to the fact that at some point the driver notices that the backlight of the VAZ 2110 instrument panel does not work. Further safe operation of the vehicle in such a case will be impossible, so it will be necessary to restore the unit’s functionality before the next departure.
It is not recommended to drive a car with a non-functional instrument panel, since the current engine parameters are not available to the driver, which can lead to serious, expensive engine damage or an accident.
Experienced drivers can correct some faults even in field conditions. Beginners should be more careful when working with wiring and electrical equipment.
What is a shield
Behind the steering wheel there is a special panel equipped with a set of control and signal light indicators, which is commonly called a panel. This block in domestic and foreign cars is endowed with approximately the same functionality. On its front side there are the following components:
- the main space is reserved for a dial indicator that measures the current speed value;
- To the left of the speedometer there is a tachometer scale, which helps control engine speed;
- there are two smaller dial indicators responsible for displaying information about the temperature of the engine and the fullness of the fuel tank;
- six lamps are built-in to indicate the status of the backlight and pairs for the turn signals;
- all kinds of lamps responsible for the activated emergency lights, battery charge, oil pressure, raised handbrake, Check Engine and several reserve cells.
Users have access to two factory versions of the shield, one of which is an old model, and the second is a “European panel”. In the first embodiment, the location is more symmetrical, and in the second, the indication of fuel and heating of the internal combustion engine is shifted to the right.
Let's sum it up
The lack of lighting on the heater control panel does not affect the technical characteristics of the car, however, it causes significant inconvenience for the driver. Searching for an unlit heater switch at night distracts the driver's attention from the road and can become an indirect cause of an emergency.
If the backlight of the stove regulator does not work, it is necessary to replace the bulbs. Even a novice driver can cope with this task. To improve the appearance of the heater controls, use LED elements instead of conventional light bulbs, and the appearance of the device will delight you with warmth and comfort in the car interior.
The culprit is the cigarette lighter
In some cars, the cause of loss of performance is hidden behind a breakdown of the passenger compartment cigarette lighter. In “tens” and other models of VAZ and foreign cars, this socket is used to connect all kinds of electrical devices, for example, for phones, tablets, laptops. During the process, large currents flow, which leads to fuse F6 blowing.
If the fuse link turns out to be operational, we recommend removing the cigarette lighter connector and checking the contacts behind it. We also monitor the wires behind the panel using a multimeter. There the values should be close to 12 V, and the white wire going to ground on block X1 should be well secured.
When testing a dismantled panel, we recommend monitoring each device separately with a multimeter after checking the overall current supply. In some cases, complete replacement of individual devices or the panel as a whole will be required.
Fuse blown
As already mentioned, a malfunction of this panel element often leads to failure of the entire panel. You can find fuse F6 in the mounting block. If it does burn out, it is very important to identify the cause of the breakdown. Otherwise, the new part will repeat the fate of the previous part and will burn out in the same way. Often the cause of the breakdown lies in a banal electrical circuit short circuit. Once the initial problem has been identified and corrected, you simply need to replace the fuse with a new part.
By the way, often the malfunction of this part becomes the reason that the dashboard and turn signals on the VAZ-2110 do not work. So, if you encounter such a problem, you can safely change the fuse.
Turning off the dashboard lights does not bode well for either the driver or the car. Because this malfunction is usually followed by others. Therefore, the backlight should be repaired immediately.
You should also understand that if the lights on the dashboard go out, then the problem must be looked for somewhere in the on-board electrical system. This means you can’t do without a multimeter, a soldering iron and electrical tape. Here are the main reasons for turning off the backlight:
- fuse burned out;
- the light bulbs have burned out (or LEDs - in later VAZ 2114 models the panel is illuminated by them);
- the wiring in the on-board electrical network is damaged;
- The common contact board of the instrument panel burned out.
Let's consider these points in more detail.
Burnt fuse
80% of cases when the backlight turns off is due to a blown fuse. It is located in a safety block installed under the steering column of the car. Usually the fuse indicated in the documentation as F10 is lit.
It is he who is responsible for the dashboard lighting, side lights and license plate lighting. On early VAZ 2114 models, fuse F10 was brown or red.
On later cars they started putting green ones. It is not difficult to understand that the fuse has blown. It's enough just to inspect it. The housing of a blown fuse may be slightly blackened or melted, and the conductor inside the housing may be severed. The faulty fuse is replaced with a new one. Typically this solves the problem.
Burnt out light bulbs
Dashboard lights operate under less than ideal conditions. They are regularly exposed to shaking, power surges in the car's electrical network and temperature changes. All this significantly reduces their service life. Especially if these are not LEDs, but ordinary incandescent lamps, which were equipped with the first VAZ 2114 models. There are a total of 19 lamps (but this number also varies depending on the year of manufacture of the car, and the number of lamps should be specified in the technical documentation for the car).
Another reason for light bulbs to burn out is their improper installation. This is most often observed on early VAZ 2114 models, where drivers decide to independently replace obsolete incandescent lamps with new LEDs, making some changes to the electrical circuit. Without proper qualifications, this operation is not so easy to perform. Here's what the sequence for replacing light bulbs looks like.
Popular faults
If we talk about the dashboard of VAZ 2109 cars, then they are characterized by certain problems. We will tell you about them, and also tell you how to act correctly in a given situation.
Fault type | Your actions |
Gasoline level and temperature indicator does not work | In most percent of cases, this situation occurs due to breakdown of devices, sensors of these devices, or an open circuit of the power supply. Therefore, first check the circuit for continuity, make sure that the fuses have not blown. If this is not the case, check whether the gas level and temperature sensors are working. Only if none of the actions allowed you to get rid of the breakdown, you can begin to replace the devices themselves. No options, the problem lies in them |
When the fuel tank is full, the arrow points to zero | If you have worked on the fuel level sensor, the fault most likely lies with you. When manipulating this device, the float limiter is often knocked down. Either the limiter is installed incorrectly or adjusted, causing the resistor winding to end. To resolve the problem, remove the sensor and then adjust the limiter again |
The fuel gauge needle regularly jumps and ends up at zero | Here, most likely, the resistor has weak contact with the current collector. Another possible option is that there is a break in the resistor. To resolve this situation, we recommend replacing the hot level sensor with a new measuring device |
The fuel level lamp is constantly on | If this lamp is constantly on, there is probably a short circuit in the fuel level sensor supply wiring to ground. Another option is that the sensor’s flexible bus is shorted to the fuel intake pipe. You will have to disassemble the device to align the bus and get rid of the resulting short circuit |
Indicator lamps do not work on the dashboard | There is a high probability that the light bulbs have simply burned out, or they are poorly held in their seats due to loose contact. Replace the bulbs, but first try tightening the contacts. Traces of oxidation may be detected. When cleaned, the light bulbs can work normally again. Also, do not exclude the possibility of wiring breakage or oxidation of the tips of the supply wiring. Try going over the wires with a tester, cleaning the contacts if necessary. |
The speedometer does not work, the flexible shaft is noisy | In such a situation, you will have to change the speedometer drive cable or replace the entire speedometer assembly. But before you bother so much, check that the fastening nuts of the tips are tightened correctly and properly. The flexible shaft may make noise during operation due to deformation or violation of the permissible bending of the shell of less than 10 centimeters during installation |
The instrument panel of the VAZ 2109 is not so complicated that you cannot figure it out on your own. But in the absence of experience, it is better to entrust the repair to specialists, or to enlist the support of a partner who understands this matter.

Panel backlight upgrade
If the original dashboard lighting of the VAZ 2114 does not suit you, you can always modify it, thus improving its functionality and making it more pleasing to the eye. The first thing you need to do is purchase a new set of light bulbs. It is best to opt for LED ones - they have lower power consumption, have a higher light output, and also make instrument readings more readable.
True, you should first calculate the required number of LEDs to illuminate each device and alarm icon (there are 13 regular light bulbs in the dashboard, but more LEDs may be required. In case the replacement is made not with individual LEDs, but with LED blocks (lamps) , then their number will also be 13).
The process of upgrading the panel backlight is performed in the following order:
- dismantle the block;
- unscrew (counterclockwise) the original sockets, install the sockets for the LED backlight;
- install resistors and lamps in special sockets;
- bring the wires from the backlight to the common board and fix it on it;
- check the functionality of the new backlight;
- If everything works, reassemble it.
During such tuning, you should definitely monitor the condition of the instrument needles - they are a rather fragile element and, if handled carelessly, can easily bend, break or deform, as a result of which instrument readings may be incorrect. In addition, upon completion of the entire process, you should check whether the arrows are set to “zero” and, if necessary, adjust their readings.
Also, immediately after completing the installation of the new backlight, you should check the functionality of all electronic devices and components using the on-board computer. If all identifiers work correctly, then you can reinstall the instrument panel (proceeding in the same order as its dismantling (see above), but in reverse order).
Problems with the backlight of the VAZ-2110 dashboard: causes and repairs
It’s probably no secret to anyone that the reliability of VAZ “ten” leaves much to be desired. Often, the owners of these cars have to deal with certain malfunctions. One of these problems is the lack of dashboard lighting. It is clear that the breakdown should be corrected as soon as possible. After all, going somewhere at night will be quite problematic - few people will like to move, essentially, blindly, without seeing either the current speed or other, no less important indicators.
Why doesn't the instrument panel light come on?
I'll give you an example from my life. I went fishing in the summer with my friend in a VAZ 2115 car. On the way, before arriving at the place, the instrument panel lights stopped lighting up. The malfunction would seem insignificant for daytime, but in the evening and at night the driver in this situation is unable to concentrate his attention on the instrument readings, which means it was necessary to eliminate the malfunction.
What to do in this situation, where should you look for the cause of the malfunction? Spare bulbs were available, fuses were missing. Or maybe the reason is not in the fuses, but in a break or lack of contact? In general, it’s impossible to immediately figure out where to start. That is, we asked ourselves a single thought: How can we determine the malfunction in this case?
Possible reasons
What to do in a situation where the instrument panel backlight on a VAZ-2110 car has disappeared? First of all, you should look for the reason why this malfunction occurred. Sometimes it can be identified immediately, but in some cases this process takes some time. In fact, there may be several reasons, so you will need to check everything methodically.
The most banal and simplest option is that someone turned the rheostat knob, which is responsible for the amount of light flux, all the way to the left.
This, by the way, is often the sin of children who are placed in the front seat. “Young drivers” love to turn all sorts of knobs, press buttons and switch levers. Perhaps the adults overlooked it, and the child “corrected” the dashboard lighting. The problem, as you understand, is solved by simply returning the rheostat knob to its previous position. Therefore, before you start looking for possible reasons for the sudden disappearance of the backlight, check this particular point.
I would like to remind you of one simple rule. In a situation where there may be several possible causes of failure, when searching you need to follow the path of least resistance. In other words, test the simplest assumptions first. You may be lucky and find the problem with minimal time and effort.
If the reason is not in the position of the rheostat handle, you need to proceed to further search for the causes of the breakdown. Possible sources of problems here could be:
- fuse;
- instrument panel circuit board;
- contacts;
- wiring;
- failure of light bulbs due to short circuit.
Main conclusions
If the instrument panel backlight on a VAZ 2114 car does not light up, most likely the light bulb has burned out or the LEDs have failed. However, there are several other possible causes for this problem:
- The wiring is damaged.
- Oxides have formed at the contact points.
- The safety side has failed.
- The electrical circuit burned out.
To establish the exact reason why the backlight does not light, you must, following the instructions, carefully disassemble the instrument panel and sequentially ring the entire circuit using a tester. The found faulty element, depending on the degree of damage, must be repaired or replaced with a new one.
Problems and their solutions
Old and new sample
There are several common problems typical for the dashboard of the domestically produced VAZ 2110 model.
- The instrument panel lights on the VAZ 2110 do not light up. Check the contacts and the condition of the wiring that is responsible for the suspension. The fuses could simply have blown, or the light bulbs themselves could have burned out as a result of wear and tear or a short circuit. In fact, there can be many reasons, so it is not always possible to resolve the issue in a couple of minutes.
- The most serious failure for the instrument panel is a complete failure of the unit. In such a situation, all indicators stop working, the arrows fall down, and the warning lamps do not light up. To fix the problem, first check fuse 15, which is designated F6. You will find it on the mounting block. If this element is blown, simply replacing the fuse will not solve the problem. Look for the reason why it burned out. Usually this is a simple short circuit in the electrical network.
- The arrows jump up and down. This is also a common phenomenon, the cause of which in most cases is poor ground contact: This ground wire goes to the partition that separates the interior and engine compartment, from the instrument panel. To get to it, remove the radio from its seat. Check the quality of its fastening;
- Often, when installing an alarm system, the ground wire is moved to another location for more convenient access. Therefore, if you have an alarm system, but there is no wire under the radio, then look for it behind the interior trim near the driver’s left foot;
- The ground wire may be damaged when installing a new audio system. When the minus is connected, the mass is unscrewed and then often mounted back, only not as reliably as it was originally. Due to vibrations, collisions with bumps and holes, the fastening weakens and contact disappears. Hence the non-functional panel. Do not be lazy to properly wrap the bulk wire, since poor fastening is often explained by the inconvenience of performing this activity.
