Replacing a fuel pump on an injection engine
I think that many VAZ 2109-2108 car owners with injection engines know very well that on such models the fuel pump is not located under the hood, as is the case with carburetor cars, but directly in the fuel tank.
And getting to it is a little more difficult, since you have to recline the back seat and perform some other steps. But we’ll talk about everything below in order. So, first of all, it’s worth talking about the tool that we need to do this job:
- Phillips and flat head screwdriver
- 7 mm deep socket head
- Ratchet handle
- Extension
- Open-end wrench 17
Replacing the fuel pump on a VAZ 2108/2109
The procedure for replacing a faulty fuel pump on a VAZ “eight” and “nine” is relatively simple. The main thing is to be careful so that when installing and dismantling you do not accidentally catch parts of other elements of the car.
Preparing tools
In order for the work to be completed quickly and not have to be distracted by searching for this or that tool, it is necessary to prepare everything in advance. So, to remove a faulty fuel pump and install a new one, you will need the following set of tools:
socket wrench (or head) size 7 mm;
open-end wrench 17.
It is recommended to carry out all stages of operations with gloves so as not to stain or injure the skin on your hands.
Step-by-step instructions on how to remove a faulty fuel pump
The first stage of work is to dismantle the old device, which can be divided into several steps:
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Fold down the rear seat in the cabin.
3. There is a small hatch under the foot carpet in the cabin; it must be opened by removing the fastening screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
4. Raise the hatch cover.
5. A plug will appear in your field of view; you will need to bend the latches on it and disconnect its parts.
6. Next, you need to unscrew the fuel pipes with a 17 wrench.
7. The tubes must be diverted in different directions so that they do not interfere with further work.
8. There is a pressure plate under the hatch - you will need to unscrew all the nuts on it to open it.
9. The fuel pump is located under the plate; to get it out you will need to pry off the rubber seal with a screwdriver.
10. As soon as you manage to lift the device a little, you will need to tilt it so as not to touch the body of the fuel level sensor.
Step-by-step instructions on how to install a new fuel pump
Further actions involve the reverse order:
Carefully insert the new device into the hole, not forgetting to change the O-ring.
Retighten all nuts on the pressure plate.
Connect the fuel pipes to each other.
Connect the two parts of the plug.
Close the cavity with the hatch cover and screw the hatch.
Place the carpet in its original place.
Video instruction: how to replace the fuel pump yourself
Thus, you can diagnose and repair the fuel pump in VAZ 2108/2109 cars yourself, without involving service station specialists. The procedure for determining the performance and replacing a faulty device is quite simple, so performing these procedures yourself will not cause difficulties even for inexperienced drivers.
The process of dismantling and installing the fuel pump of a VAZ 2109 or 2108 injection machine
First of all, I would like to give a more visual video instruction, which I made just a couple of weeks ago using the example of a dozen. But since there is not much difference, I decided to post it here too.
If suddenly the video clip does not load or other problems arise, then below you can consider everything in more detail, only in the form of a photo report.
When the back seat is folded down, on the floor under the carpet you need to find the hatch under which this entire structure is located:
When the bolts have been unscrewed, lift the cover and disconnect the plug, having previously unscrewed the latches on it:
Then, using a 17mm wrench, we unscrew the fuel pipes, resulting in the following picture.
We take them to the side so that they do not interfere with further work. And you can unscrew all the nuts securing the pressure plate in a circle:
Then carefully lift the plate:
After that, prying up the rubber band with a flat screwdriver, we slowly try to remove the fuel pump out.
When it rises a little, then it will need to be tilted about 90 degrees so that the fuel level sensor does not interfere with removal:
The price of a new fuel pump for VAZ 2109-2108 injector cars is about 2800 rubles, so it is better to take care of this unit. And in order not to create unnecessary loads and idle work, make sure that there is always more than 5 liters of gasoline in the tank.

Removing and installing a fuel pump on VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099 cars
1. Remove the air filter (see “Removing and installing the air filter on VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099”).
2. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the fuel supply hose to the fuel pump.
3. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor.
4. Unscrew the two nuts securing the fuel pump.
5. Carefully (so as not to damage the gasket) remove the fuel pump.
6. Carefully remove the insulating spacer with the rod, inner and outer gaskets. Replace damaged gaskets.
NOTE. When installing a fuel pump on a VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099 car, check and, if necessary, adjust its supply using gaskets. To do this, determine the protrusion of the fuel pump pusher from the plane of the heat-insulating gasket, which should be 0.8-1.3 mm. If the fuel pump pusher protrudes less than permissible, then at high speeds or loads an insufficient amount of fuel is supplied to the carburetor. If the rod protrudes more than permissible, excess fuel pressure will be created, which can lead to failure of the carburetor shut-off valve. Spare parts are supplied with gaskets with a thickness of 0.27-0.33; 0.70-0.80 and 1.10-1.30 mm. A gasket with a thickness of 0.27-0.33 mm must be installed under the thermal insulation pad.
7. Install the heat-insulating spacer, placing a gasket (internal) with a thickness of 0.27_0.33 mm under it.
8. Pressing the pushrod with your finger, slowly rotate the crankshaft by the flywheel until you feel minimal protrusion of the pushrod.
9. Pressing the heat-insulating spacer, measure the protrusion of the rod. When measuring, the shank of the caliper should rest on the mating plane of the heat-insulating spacer.
10. Select the outer gasket so that after installation, the protrusion of the rod is 0.8-1.3 mm (a set of gaskets is allowed).
11. Next, install the fuel pump on a VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099 car in the reverse order of removal. In this case, the arrow on the fuel pump body should be directed towards the fuel flow (towards the carburetor).
VAZ 2109 fuel pump injector: do-it-yourself replacement and diagnostics
When considering the fuel system, you should definitely mention the VAZ 2109 injector fuel pump. The injection system consists of several components, which are basic. On our website you can also find information for newer VAZ models, for example, 2110. Nines are also equipped with electric fuel pumps that supply gasoline under a certain pressure to the ramp. Moreover, the pressure must be constant, otherwise the operation of the engine will be unstable. So, what is the injection nine fuel pump and how does it work.
Fuel pump VAZ 2109 injector
The fuel pump on the VAZ injector is installed electric. That is, it is turned on by supplying +12V voltage from the battery to it. It is located in the gas tank of the car. The task of the fuel pump is to supply fuel under pressure into the fuel rail, from where it is sprayed directly into the working cylinder using the injection system. Checking the functionality of the fuel pump: 1) When the ignition is turned on, the pump should start working. That is, the sound of its operation should be heard in the rear seat area. Therefore, the very first thing you need to do is check the fuse and the fuel pump relay. The assignments of the relays and fuses are labeled on the back of the mounting block cover. If the fuse is intact and the relay is working properly, then you need to remove the back seat of the car and measure the voltage at the fuel pump itself. This is done using a multimeter or wires with a 12V light bulb.
The injection VAZ 2109 has an electric fuel pump
If there is voltage at the pump, then everything is fine with the electrical part; you need to look at the fuel system. If voltage is not supplied to the fuel pump, you need to check the wire from the mounting block to the fuel pump; it may be damaged. 2) On the VAZ 2108 2109 21099 injector, it is not recommended to allow the fuel level in the tank to be less than 10 liters. Not the most convenient requirement, given that the car’s gas tank capacity is 45 liters. However, there is a reason for this: if the fuel level in the gas tank is low, the gas pump may catch air, which is unacceptable.
The operation of the pump is checked by measuring the pressure in the fuel rail. The rail has a special hole for connecting a pressure gauge. If there is voltage to the pump, but there is no pressure in the fuel rail, you need to check the fuel filter. If it is in order, check the fuel line from the tank to the ramp; if it is also not damaged, then the fuel pump is most likely faulty.
For further diagnostics, you need to remove the fuel pump from the car and try to install a new one. If everything works with the new fuel pump, then the old pump is faulty. If, even with a new fuel pump, there is no pressure in the fuel rail and the car does not start, then the problem will be in the fuel system.
benzonasos-vaz-2109-inzhektor
If you do not have a pressure gauge, the operation of the gas pump can be checked by the amount of fuel pumped per unit of time. Having unscrewed the spool, we connect a hose to the ramp, which we lower into the container for measurement. On Kalina and Grant, the pump should pump 35 liters per hour, or 0.5 liters. in a minute. At ten, the pump pumps 1 liter. in a minute. If much less fuel has leaked out, all filters must be checked. Under the bottom, next to the gas tank, there is a high-pressure filter. Another filter that needs to be checked is located in the tank itself on the fuel module. What to pay attention to: To remove the fuel pump from the car, you must remove the fuel tank. The VAZ 2108 2109 21099 fuel pump and injector cannot be removed directly from the passenger compartment, you can only check the voltage supply to it.
Pump operating principle
The VAZ 2109 fuel pump has a fairly simple design; the injector functions only thanks to it. It is based on two elements - an electric motor and a pump with a filter element. Please note that the “diaper” (as people call the filter for its similarity) needs to be changed on time - try not to let it work for more than 20 thousand km. Otherwise, it becomes saturated with metal shavings, dirt and other rubbish, which gets into the line and clogs the injectors.
The fuel rail contains a mixture of gasoline and air (also purified, by the way). The proportion is always the same - 14 parts of air and one part of gasoline. This is the ideal mixture for combustion to occur. But you need to pay attention to the fact that the VAZ 2109 fuel pump relay, which is controlled by an electronic unit, is involved in the operation. It is used to supply power to the pump motor. The pump's performance is high, so the engine does not run constantly, but intermittently (and depending on the operating mode of the engine, the pauses between starts may be different).
For control, there is a pressure regulator installed on the ramp. To drain excess gasoline - a check valve. With its help, all excess gasoline flows back into the tank. The VAZ 2109 fuel pump (injector) is removed if it is being repaired or replaced. The following tools will be useful:
- Pliers.
- Keys for “6”, “8”.
- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers.
But if the pump suddenly fails, you should first check the condition of other elements. Carefully inspect the fuse and relay of the VAZ 2109 fuel pump. If they are faulty, then the entire injector will not be able to work normally. As they say, we check the least expensive breakdowns first. If the reason is really in the fuel pump itself, then you can start dismantling it:
- Raise the lower part of the seat, opening the rear doors completely.
- Unscrew the screws securing the plastic cover.
- Disconnect the power supply and connection to the level sensor.
- Loosen the clamps and remove the hoses. Please note that the pressure in the system must be reduced in advance.
- Using an “8” wrench, unscrew all the nuts that secure the pump to the tank body.
- Carefully remove the pump from the hole.
The main thing in this matter is accuracy, as there is a risk of damaging the fuel level sensor. And one more thing: before removing the VAZ 2109 fuel pump, you need to get rid of dirt and dust. Therefore, blow the installation area with compressed air or at least clean it with a brush.
To verify the serviceability (or malfunction) of the fuel injection pump of the VAZ 2109, just remove it and connect it directly to the battery. If it works normally, without any extraneous sounds (and air pressure is felt from the outlet), then there are no problems with it. But if it does not turn on even this way, you should think about replacing it. The price of a new one will be about 2000 rubles. Is it worth repairing an electric motor? It is unlikely that this will improve the situation for a long time, but as a temporary solution it is quite normal. But you can do this procedure only if you are confident in your abilities and have an understanding of how electric motors work.

We remove and install the fuel pump (gasoline pump) VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099
The power supply system for carburetor engines of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 vehicles uses a mechanically driven fuel pump (gasoline pump). It is mounted on the engine accessory housing on the battery side.
We remove the fuel pump to replace it, repair it, and adjust the drive. You can replace or clean the mesh filter in it or check the intake and exhaust valves without removing the fuel pump from the engine. When removing the fuel pump, you need to know some features of this work that will help you do everything quickly and correctly.

— Phillips screwdriver for loosening the clamps
— Socket wrench (head) at “13” for loosening the fuel pump mounting nuts
Removing and replacing the fuel pump on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 (injector, carburetor)
Hello, in this article you will learn how to replace the fuel pump on injection and carburetor VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099. The fuel pump is usually changed if there is low pressure in the fuel system, or the pump does not pump fuel at all. First, let's look at replacing a fuel pump on a carburetor car. In fact, in the case of a mechanical fuel pump, such situations as pump leakage are possible, i.e. when it starts to drip, and if your fuel pump on a carburetor car starts leaking, under no circumstances drive it, gasoline will drip directly onto the hot outlet. Automotive stores sell repair kits for mechanical fuel pumps, but usually repairing a fuel pump has a short-term effect, so it is better to replace it with a new one. In order to remove the fuel pump, you need to unscrew the clamps on the fuel hoses and pull them off the pump (gasoline will flow from the hoses, so prepare some kind of container and plugs for the hoses in advance)
Now unscrew the 2 bolts securing the fuel pump and remove it
Also remove the thermal insulation spacer and gasket
Installing a new fuel pump on a carburetor car is done in the reverse order.
Now let's look at the situation with the electric fuel pump on the injection VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099. The electric fuel pump is located under the rear seat. Raise the seat and unscrew the bolt securing the protective cover of the fuel pump. Before we begin removing the fuel pump, we need to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. This can be done in two ways, either remove the fuel pump fuse with the car running, wait until it stalls and turn the engine with the starter for a couple more seconds, or do the same thing, only remove not the fuse, but the block from the fuel pump itself. In fact, by lifting the rear seat and removing the fuel pump cover, you can encounter 2 situations. Access to the fuel pump is completely open, i.e. you can unscrew all the nuts securing it and pull it up, and the second situation is when access to the fuel pump is half open. Usually, in the second situation, you need to remove the gas tank and only then change the fuel pump, but this is very time-consuming and difficult; later we will look at a simpler method. So first about the first method. If access to the fuel pump is completely open, then simply unscrew the fuel pipes from it, remove the block (if you haven’t removed it before), unscrew the nuts securing it and carefully lift it up
In the second case, you will need to use either metal scissors or a grinder. We cut through the metal as shown in the picture below
After this, we bend the cut piece of metal, and just as in the first case, disconnect the fuel pipes, unscrew the nuts and remove the fuel pump
Installing the fuel pump occurs in the reverse order.

Fuel pump VAZ 2109: how the injector works. Replacement and inspection
You will need to consider the features that the VAZ 2109 fuel pump has. If the injector is in the fuel injection system, then the pump is of an electric type. Its use is due to the need to control the fuel supply to the combustion chambers. But, as you know, gasoline first enters a special ramp, in which it is mixed with air in a certain proportion (14 to 1). It maintains constant pressure, with the help of which the mixture is supplied to the combustion chamber through holes in the electromagnetic injectors. These are devices that transform the air-fuel mixture into very small droplets. Essentially, the mist in which the gasoline is suspended in the combustion chamber is ignited.
How does a fuel pump work?
There is nothing complicated about the fuel supply system. A conventional pump, which is driven by the rotor of an electric motor. To protect the entire fuel system from small particles, a filter is used. But this is not the end of the features, because it is worth noting that it is necessary to maintain the pressure in the ramp at the same level. And the VAZ 2109 fuel pump (the injector simply cannot work without it), provided that it constantly pumps gasoline, will begin to pump up the pressure higher and higher. And this will disrupt the operation of the system.
Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the pressure. For this, a special device is used, which is called a pressure regulator. It is installed in the fuel rail and connected to a pipeline that serves to dump excess gasoline into the tank. When the ignition is turned on, the rail pressure sensor is polled, after which the fuel pump drive is turned on. After the pressure in the rail has increased to the required value, the fuel pump is turned off. Therefore, it does not work all the time.
Fuel pump characteristics
In order to determine the presence of malfunctions in the fuel pump, you must know about the optimal parameters of this device.
Characteristic | Required parameters |
Fuel pump rod length | 82.4 millimeters |
Protrusion of the rod above the top gasket | 0.8-1.3 millimeters |
Thickness of the first gasket | 0.3 millimeters |
Fuel pump rod stroke | 2.5-2.8 millimeters |
Pump pressure at idle speed | 0.20-0.35 atmospheres |
Buying a new fuel pump will not cost that much - up to 1000 rubles. However, such costs are also high for many. And for some, their conscience simply will not allow them to buy a new pump right away, if it is possible to get by with a repair kit and return the pump to functionality for literally pennies and a couple of hours of work in your own garage.
Replacing the device
How to remove the fuel pump
The VAZ 2109 fuel pump is located under the rear seat. The injector implies its installation directly in the tank. The thing is that the pump is a submersible type. In the same unit there is a float-type fuel level sensor. It works due to the fact that the float moves the slider using variable resistance. At the same time, the current in the power circuit changes. The amount of gasoline remaining in the tank is determined by the magnitude of the change. To remove the pump you will need to use pliers, screwdrivers and an 8mm wrench.
It is quite possible that the reason that fuel is not supplied is a non-working VAZ 2109 fuel pump relay. The injector contains it, as well as a fuse, which could easily burn out. Before starting work, thoroughly clean the entire cover so that after removal no dust gets inside the tank. Then, using a screwdriver, loosen the clamps that secure the hoses. Remove them; if you can’t do it with your hands, try gently squeezing them with pliers and twisting them. After this, use a size 8 wrench to unscrew all the nuts that secure the lid to the tank body. Please note that there are washers there. Don't lose them. That's all, now the pump can be easily removed for replacement or repair.
Checking the pump's functionality
It is easy to check the VAZ 2109 fuel pump even without special instruments. The injector will not be able to operate without pressure in the fuel rail. Therefore, you need to keep the pump motor spinning. It’s easy to check; just connect its terminals to the battery. If you are afraid, then turn on an incandescent lamp in the gap of one wire. It will help determine the health of the motor winding. Please note that the filter must be as clean as possible. If it is clogged, be sure to change it. Otherwise, the pump will not be able to create the required pressure.

Features of the design and location of fuel pumps VAZ 2108/2109
The DAAZ gasoline pump has a simple mechanical design. It includes:
- a body consisting of an upper and lower part;
- lid;
- mesh filter;
- valves (inlet and outlet);
- diaphragms (3 pcs) with spacers;
- the rod to which the diaphragms are attached;
- return spring;
- manual pumping lever.
Design of the DAAZ fuel pump
The VAZ 2108/2108 mechanical fuel pump is located in the engine compartment of the car and is installed on the auxiliary drive housing (in front of the ignition distributor). It is driven by the camshaft through a cam mechanism and a rod (pushrod). The camshaft rotates an eccentric, which transmits force through a pusher to a balancer at the bottom of the pump housing. The latter raises and lowers the rod with the diaphragms. Thus, a vacuum is formed at the pump inlet, and pressure is formed at the outlet. Valves located in the device body are responsible for its maintenance.
The VAZ 2108/2109 mechanical fuel pump is located on the auxiliary drive housing
On injection VAZ 2108/2109, the fuel pump is not a separate device, but an element of the fuel module. It also includes:
- plastic storage cup;
- coarse mesh filter;
- fuel level sensor.
The module is located in the car tank. Its lid (base) is located at the top of the container. You will find it by removing the back seat and peeling back the carpet.
The electric fuel pump in the injection VAZ 2108/2109 is located in the car tank
Structurally, the fuel injection pump VAZ 2108/2109 is an electric motor with an impeller on the shaft, which, rotating, pumps gasoline, creating a vacuum at the inlet fitting and pressure at the outlet. The pump is powered from the machine’s on-board network, protected by separate relays and a fuse.

Malfunctions, removal and repair of a mechanical fuel pump
On VAZ 21099 cars, the carburetor was equipped with mechanical diaphragm-type fuel pumps by the manufacturer. The main malfunctions of this type of pump are associated with rupture of diaphragms, breakage of the rod, spring and depressurization of valves.
The main advantage of mechanical fuel pumps is that they are easy to repair. If any element fails, you can buy a domestic repair kit at the nearest spare parts store and replace all faulty parts within an hour. The fuel pump on VAZ 2108-99 cars with a carburetor fuel supply system is located in the engine compartment, in the same place where the ignition distributor is located.
Removing the mechanical fuel pump.
- First, open the hood and remove the negative terminal from the battery.
- Then loosen the clamps and disconnect the fuel hoses from the pump connections.
- After this, unscrew the 2 nuts securing the fuel pump and, carefully, so as not to damage the gaskets, remove it.
Now it needs to be disassembled.
- Unscrew the bolt on the top of the pump cover and remove it along with the strainer.
- Unscrew the 6 screws and separate the upper and lower parts of the case.
- Carefully remove the diaphragms along with the spring and rod, turning them 90°.
After disassembly, it is necessary to carefully inspect all parts and replace damaged ones. Reassemble and install the pump in reverse order.
How to check a mechanical fuel pump VAZ 2108/2109
Checking a mechanical fuel pump involves determining its performance, i.e. measuring the amount of fuel pumped per unit of time. And according to the characteristics of the device, it should be at least one liter per minute. To determine it, you will need an assistant, as well as the following tools and tools:
- screwdriver with Phillips bit;
- a piece of fuel hose;
- 2 empty plastic bottles;
- 1.5 liters of gasoline;
- watch with stopwatch.
- Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screw on the outlet fitting clamp, loosen it and remove the fuel hose.
- Pour gasoline into a plastic bottle. We lower the free end of the fuel hose (removed from the outlet fitting) into the bottle to the bottom. Through it, gasoline will be sucked into the carburetor when the fuel level in the float chamber decreases.
- We put the end of the prepared hose onto the outlet fitting of the fuel pump. Place the other end into an empty bottle.
- We ask the assistant to start the engine, start the stopwatch. If the car has a tachometer, stick to 2000 rpm. If it is not there, we rely on hearing.
We lower the hose from the outlet fitting into an empty bottle
If the amount of gasoline pumped in one minute is less than a liter, the pump is faulty
Further diagnostics should be aimed at identifying the faulty pump element. To carry it out you need:
- screwdriver with Phillips bit;
- wrenches 10 and 13;
- caliper (ruler).
- First of all, we check the operation of the valves. Unscrew the screws of the clamps securing the fuel hoses to the pump fittings. We remove the hoses. We put our finger (palm) against the outlet fitting, plugging it. Press the manual pumping lever several times. At the same time, the pump should make slurping sounds, and air pressure should be felt at the fitting. We check the intake valve in the same way. When you press the pumping lever, your finger should be sucked into the fitting. If there is neither pressure at the outlet nor vacuum at the inlet, either the valves or the diaphragms are faulty.
You should feel a vacuum at the inlet fitting, and air pressure at the outlet
The mesh filter must be clean and free from mechanical damage.
If the diaphragms are damaged or deformed, they must be replaced
The length of the pusher should be 82.5 mm
Checking the fuel pump
- Let’s immediately look at the two most common types of gasoline pumps, “Pekar” and DAAZ. They are installed on both rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive cars. To check the serviceability and functionality of the entire fuel supply system:
- Remove the gasoline hose from the outgoing (discharge) fitting of the gasoline pump
- Then press the fuel pumping lever manually several times
- If the VAZ fuel pump is working properly, then a powerful stream of fuel should come out of the fitting
- If there is no stream, or there is a weak stream, perform a second check
To check the serviceability of the intake valve:
- We disconnect the fuel hose from the suction fitting of the pump (it turns out that now we have removed both fuel hoses from two fittings)
- Then we plug the suction fitting with our finger and press the lever for manual pumping several times
- At the same time, you should feel a vacuum on your finger (it should be sucked to the fitting)
- When there is a vacuum, this means that the fuel pump is working, look for faults in the gas tank or fuel lines
- If not, the fuel pump on the VAZ 21093 does not work, remove the pump, disassemble and change the intake valve
To check the exhaust valve for leaks:
- Place your finger on the hole in the injection fitting (the one that supplies gasoline to the carburetor), then press the lever several times to manually pump
- At the same time, a very noticeable stream of air comes out of the fitting hole, it pushes the finger away from the fitting
- If the stream is weak or absent, it means that the fuel pump on the VAZ 2109 does not pump, then remove the pump, disassemble and replace the exhaust valve
- If the filter is deformed or clogged:
- Remove the cap from the fuel pump, take out the fuel filter, clean it, rinse it in gasoline, then blow it with compressed air
- If the filter is deformed, then change it
- In the Pekar brand fuel pump, as well as similar pumps, the filter is removed by unscrewing the suction fitting from the cover, so you don’t have to remove the cover itself
- In case of malfunctions (leaky, torn) of the diaphragm:
Mechanical fuel pump repair
The functionality of a mechanical fuel pump can be restored by replacing its faulty elements. You can buy them at any automobile store. But it is better to buy not individual spare parts, but a repair kit. It includes all the elements that can fail:
- intake and exhaust valves;
- diaphragms with spacers, “plates”, rod;
- pusher;
- thermal spacer;

Replacing valves
To replace the pump valves you will need a slotted impact driver and a small hammer. The valves are held in their seats by punching at three points. These areas must be carefully knocked off with a screwdriver. After this, the valves can be removed. Having installed the new parts, we secure them with cores. To do this, place the tip of the screwdriver on the edge of the housing along the circumference of the socket and strike it lightly with a hammer. We fix each valve in three places.
How to change apertures
To replace the diaphragms, you need to unscrew the nut by 10 in the upper part of the rod. Next, we remove the damaged elements, and in their place we install parts from the repair kit.
The kit includes three diaphragms: two working and one safety. The latter serves to prevent unauthorized fuel from entering the carburetor if the first two are damaged. It is installed at the very bottom of the rod immediately after the lower “plate”. We place spacers on top of it on the rod: first a small one, then a large one. We place the working membranes and the upper “plate” on them. We secure the resulting structure with a nut.
The mechanical fuel pump has 3 diaphragms
Replacing the pusher, thermal spacer and gaskets
The thermal spacer does not need to be replaced unless it is damaged. Inspect its mating surfaces, especially the outer one, to which the lower part of the pump housing is attached. It should be perfectly smooth. Otherwise, oil leakage may occur at the junction of parts during engine operation.
Replacing the pusher is carried out by removing the old one and installing a new rod in its place. There is no difference in which end where it will be installed.
Now about the gaskets. There are only three of them in the repair kit, and they have different thicknesses:
The first is intended for installation between the thermal spacer and the auxiliary drive housing, and the gaskets “B” and “C” are used to adjust the protrusion of the pusher above its mating surface.
The adjustment is made as follows:
- We install the thermal spacer with the first gasket and a new rod into the auxiliary drive housing.
Installation of gaskets and thermal spacer
The thinnest gasket is installed between the spacer and the accessory drive housing
The pusher should protrude 0.8–1.3 mm above the mating plane of the spacer
After the adjustment is completed, the fuel pump is installed in place and secured with nuts.
Malfunctions on VAZ 21099 fuel pumps with an injector
The fuel pump may not work for the following reasons:
- breakdown of the pump diaphragms. Identifying such a malfunction can be quite simple, since such problems often lead to the formation of fuel leaks on the car body with a specific odor. Therefore, if the car owner notices such stains, he should check the quality of the diaphragms. The procedure for replacing diaphragms itself does not require special knowledge and skills. All you need to do is unscrew the nut installed on the pump rod and replace the old diaphragms with new ones;
- valve malfunction. In this case, the driver should carefully inspect the fuel pump, checking how tight the valves are installed. If gasoline leaks from under them, the valves must be urgently replaced with new ones. Moreover, in such situations, the car owner must know how to remove the fuel pump on a VAZ 21099 with an injector;
- the pump pusher is deformed. Checking the operation of the pusher is as follows: remove the pump, while the pusher itself must remain on the engine. Then we turn the crankshaft, trying to do it in such a way that the pusher is recessed as much as possible. Next you need to measure how much the pusher protrudes above the surface. And if this protrusion exceeds 1.3 mm, then in this case it is necessary to increase the number of gaskets or replace the pusher.
In the end, it must be said that repairing a VAZ 21099 fuel pump with your own hands is a fairly simple procedure that even inexperienced car enthusiasts can do.
Replacing a mechanical fuel pump VAZ 2108/2109
Replacing a mechanical pump assembly will take no more than half an hour. To implement it you will need:
- key to 13;
- screwdriver with Phillips bit;
- container for draining gasoline.
- Unscrew the screws of the fuel hose clamps on the inlet and outlet fittings of the pump.
- Remove the hoses from the fittings.
- Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the fuel pump mounting nuts.
- We dismantle the pump. We drain the gasoline from it.

Checking the performance of the fuel pump on injection VAZ 2108/2109
If in Sputniks and Samaras with carburetor engines, fuel pump malfunctions are associated only with its design, then in injection vehicles they can also be caused by problems with the power supply of the device.
Diagnostics of the electric circuit of the fuel pump
To check whether voltage is supplied to the fuel pump, turn on the ignition without starting the engine and listen. When you turn the key, you should first hear the click of the relay, and then the characteristic “squeal” that the electric motor of the fuel pump emits. If these sounds are absent, the search for the problem should begin with the pump circuit protection devices.
The fuel pump relay and fuse are located in an additional mounting block, which is located under the glove compartment. The pump relay (R2) is installed in the middle, and its fuse (F2) is located to the left of it.
The fuel pump relay and fuse are located in an additional mounting block under the glove compartment.
We check them in this order:
- Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- We remove the fuse from the socket and test it with a tester. If it is faulty, we replace it.
- We connect the terminal to the battery and turn on the ignition without starting the engine. We switch the tester to voltmeter mode and measure the voltage between the relay output to which the pink wire fits and ground. The device should show 12 V. If there is no voltage, the problem must be looked for in the wiring or contact group of the ignition switch. If power is supplied to the relay, use a screwdriver to close the terminal to which the pink wire fits with the terminal connected to the gray wire. This way the pump circuit will be closed directly (bypassing the relay). The fuel pump is working - we change the relay, if not - we check whether voltage is supplied to the pump itself.
- We remove the back seat. We bend the carpet underneath and find the hatch. Unscrew the screws (2 pcs) securing it. There is an electrical connector under the hatch. Disconnect it from the pump. Turn on the ignition. Using a tester turned on in voltmeter mode, we measure the voltage between the “plus” (gray wire) of the pump and its “ground”. There is voltage - the problem is in the pump itself, if not - the reason should be sought in the wiring.
Checking the fuel pressure in the system
If the diagnostics show that the pump is working, but the above signs of its malfunction are observed, you need to check the fuel pressure in the system. For this you will need:
- a pressure gauge with a measurement limit of 5–7 atmospheres (a regular tire gauge will do);
- a piece of petrol-resistant hose with a length of 50 cm and an internal diameter of 10–12 mm;
- nipple cap;
- 2 hose clamps;
- dry rag.
We check the pressure in the following order:
- We find a special fitting on the fuel rail. It is located on the right side of the device (when viewed from inside the car).
The fitting is located at the end of the ramp on the right side
Unscrew the spool with a nipple cap
We connect one end of the hose to the pressure gauge, the other to the fitting on the ramp
The pressure when the ignition is on should be 2.8–3.2 atmospheres
How to replace the fuel pump on a VAZ 2109 injector
Good day everyone. I decided to replace the mesh on the fuel pump (coarse filter) and see how much minced meat I had accumulated in the fuel.
Having bought the mesh in advance at the auto store, I proceeded to replace it.
The first step is to remove or raise the rear seat.
Remove upholstery and other fabric.
There we see a hatch, we unscrew it.
Under the hatch a large collective farm from the previous owners was waiting for me. Apparently they didn’t want to bother with beauty when they converted the carburetor into an injector and didn’t carefully cut a hole for the hatch, but simply tore the metal. From the outside it looks like an alien crawled out of the gas tank.
Now you need to first disconnect the chip. And start the engine. It will run for a couple of seconds and die. This is necessary in order to relieve pressure in the system and pump gasoline out of the lines. Now we unscrew the mass, fuel lines, and all the clamping bolts in a circle. (here you will need a key for 7).
Next, we move the highways to the sides as much as possible.
We first remove the pressure ring, and then the pump itself. CAREFULLY! There will be gasoline in the pump cup and in the pump itself. The pump will need to be pulled out slightly at an angle, as the float will get in the way. Do not fill the entire interior with gasoline.
We removed the pump. Drain the gasoline and sediment from the glass. (just not back to the tank)
Now we need to remove the glass. This is done differently on different pumps. I have a pump. On it you need to turn the pump upside down and use a small screwdriver to pull out the two rubber clamps.
Now you can see what has accumulated in the glass and on the mesh.
We remove the old mesh, it is not fastened with anything, and put on a new one.
We wash the glass, assemble the pump and put it back in the tank. Just in case, I coated the O-ring a little with sealant. And pay attention, there is an arrow on the pump cover, it should point towards the trunk. Screw on the clamping ring. When I started to tighten the ring, the threads on the studs began to lick off, so I screwed on two nuts at a time. We screw the mass. We insert the chip. Let's try to start it.
We started the car a couple of times, if everything works well, no gasoline oozes out from under the pump. Then we screw the hatch into place and lower the seat.
That's all, thank you everyone. Clean gasoline for everyone.
The fuel pump for the VAZ 2108 2109 21099 is installed with an electric injector. That is, it is turned on by supplying +12V voltage from the battery to it. It is located in the gas tank of the car. The task of the fuel pump is to supply fuel under pressure into the fuel rail, from where it is sprayed directly into the working cylinder using the injection system. Checking the performance of the fuel pump VAZ 2108 2109 21099: 1) When the ignition is turned on, the pump should start working.
There is a special hole in the rail for connecting a pressure gauge. If there is voltage to the pump, but there is no pressure in the fuel rail, you need to check the fuel filter. If it is in order, check the fuel line from the tank to the ramp; if it is also not damaged, then the fuel pump is most likely faulty.
For further diagnostics, the VAZ 2108 2109 21099 fuel pump must be removed from the car and try to install a new one. If everything works with the new fuel pump, then the old pump is faulty. If, even with the new fuel pump, there is no pressure in the fuel rail and the car does not start, then the problem will be in the fuel system.
A fuel pump is a device that supplies fuel from the tank to the engine. The main task of this part is to deliver fuel at a certain pressure, which is necessary for the operation of the engine . In this article we will discuss the following fairly common questions regarding this part in the VAZ 2109 injector:
- What is a fuel pump for a VAZ 2109 with an injector?
