Changing the oil and oil filter of the Lada Granta engine

The process of replacing the oil filter on a Lada Granta

To remove the old filter element and install a new one, prepare in advance:

  • new motor oil;
  • a container for draining waste liquid (water bottle, oil canister);
  • set of wrenches;
  • puller to unscrew the MF;
  • rags;
  • funnel;
  • new oil filter.

Before starting work, you need to warm up the Lada Granta - that is, drive it. Wait about fifteen minutes and begin the replacement process. Then the liquid will have time to completely drain into the crankcase. It is advisable to install the machine on an inspection hole or overpass; you can use a lift. Then:

Open the hood. Find the oil filler hole and unscrew the cap from it so that the lubricant drains faster. Drain the treatment by unscrewing the drain plug. It's under the car

Please note: the liquid is hot, so you need to be careful when draining it. Place a pre-prepared drain container under the engine. While the used oil is poured out, you can begin to directly replace the filter element. Using a special wrench, unscrew the oil filter

It is not necessary to use a puller - you can try to unscrew it by hand or with improvised means (for example, a flat-head screwdriver, a belt or a chain). Fill the new filter halfway with fresh, unused oil. Wipe the area where the previous filter consumable was located with a clean rag. This is necessary to ensure that residual dirt does not penetrate into the new lubricant. Also lubricate the sealing rubber with unused liquid. Gently tighten the oil filter without applying any force. As a result, the rubber band should touch the cylinder block. After this, turn it another quarter turn. After you tighten the plug on the drain neck, fill in new lubricant. Then screw on the oil filler cap. Run the engine for a couple of minutes. After you turn off the engine, carefully check to see if there are any lubricant leaks. If you notice any leaks, simply tighten the necessary parts. Make sure the oil level is correct. If it is less than necessary, add liquid.

Use only high-quality lubricant and do not forget to replace it on time. If you are afraid of damaging other elements of the car system or are not sure that you can cope with such a task, it would be best to contact a salon.

When to change the oil

The optimal oil change schedule for the Lada Granta engine is set at 15 thousand kilometers. This is a very optimal period, given the difficult climatic conditions in Russia.

Standards and factors

How much lubricant will be used depends on its quality, viscosity, operating conditions and driving style. On average, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, the consumption per 1000 km for the Grant will be as follows:

  • 8 valves, engine capacity 1.6 l, power 87 hp: consumes 50 g;
  • 16 valves, motor models of all varieties: consumption 300 g.

Engine oil can be consumed more intensively - a whole list of factors affects:

  1. Overflow of lubricant;
  2. Clogged or faulty filter;
  3. Oil viscosity. The seasonal variety is used up faster than the all-season variety. But the last one is more likely
  4. loses viscosity;
  5. Malfunction or high degree of wear of engine components: pistons, cylinders, pumps;
  6. In a new or overhauled engine, the increased oil consumption is explained by the grinding of the elements. When it ends, consumption should return to normal.

In some cases, the reason for high expenses may be difficult to determine. But eliminating the problem is an urgent and extremely important task. Delaying it usually ends in the need for expensive and major repairs.

What kind of oil should I use?

The issue of choosing oil is not difficult if you follow the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, the system should use oil for gasoline engines that corresponds to groups SJ or SL. But the viscosity of a specific brand of oil should be selected according to the climatic conditions in which the car is operated.

More details about choosing oil for Granta Liftback are described in the articles:

  • choosing oil for an 8-valve engine
  • choice of oil for a 16-valve engine

What kind of oil is used in the Liftback body from the factory?

To more carefully select the oil that will be used in the future, it is worth considering what kind of oil was poured into the engine by the manufacturer when the car left the factory. This oil may vary depending on the time when the car was produced, as well as the region to which the car is planned to be delivered. From the Grantu plant, RosNeft “semi-synthetic” 5w-40 oil is poured into the liftback body. Similar oil is also poured into other configurations of Lada Granta cars.

About oil consumption of the Lada Granta car

Naturally, any engine will consume oil, albeit in small quantities. And this does not mean at all that there is something wrong with the car. For the car in question, regardless of engine type, the norm will be considered to be a consumption of one liter for every thousand kilometers. However, the manufacturer may claim a figure of half a liter per thousand kilometers, but the actual consumption, depending on the quality of the fuel and driving characteristics, will be different.

In addition, the amount of consumption depends on the viscosity parameter of the oil, its quality and the conditions under which it is operated. As an example, if you drive aggressively at high speeds, much more oil will be consumed. The consumption will be slightly increased in the case of a new engine, since its pistons, rings and walls have not yet completely ground in. But this phenomenon will practically disappear after the first oil change at around three thousand kilometers.

Temperature correspondence to oil

An important factor when choosing is to consider the minimum temperatures at which the car will be operated.

For example, if we are talking about the most severe conditions, including thirty degrees below zero, then oil should be purchased with the 0W index. The next step, which speaks of 5W oil, will be a temperature limit of -25 degrees Celsius. With an increase in the minimum temperature to -15 degrees, it becomes possible to fill in oil with the index 10W. The middle zone, with not very severe winters ranging from 5 to 10 degrees below zero, can be content with 20W oil. Well, for the warmest climate, at least five degrees below zero in winter, 25W oil will be relevant.

If you use a type of oil that is not suitable for operating conditions, the engine will run intermittently or “catch a wedge.”

Additional factors

Additionally, factors such as the state of the injection system, battery, ignition and cylinder compression must be taken into account. In most cases, these parameters will not be relevant for a new car.

Oil change on Grant

To change the oil and oil filter yourself you will need:

  • socket wrench or socket “17” or hexagon socket “8” (depending on the type of plug used)
  • oil filter puller
  • the filter itself and the engine oil

Before buying oil, find out what type of viscosity is most suitable for the climate in which the car is operated. If you live in the middle zone, for example in the central part of Russia or the Volga region, then you can use oil with a viscosity parameter of 10W-40; this parameter determines the possibility of using the oil in a temperature range from -25 to +40.

If in your region there are often frosts in winter with temperatures dropping below -30, then you need to use oil with a viscosity parameter of 5W-XX, which retains fluidity down to -35 degrees. In case of extreme temperature drops below -35, it is necessary to use oil with the 0W-XX parameter, which does not freeze down to -40. As for the base of the oil used, synthetic or semi-synthetic, we will leave this choice to the reader, since in this case the question is not only technical necessity, but also the cost of consumables.

List of parts and equipment

To simply change the engine oil, the owner of a car with an automatic transmission will need a core wrench. The standard size “6 edges by 8 mm” is suitable. In principle, you don’t need anything else except a flat key “10”. They unscrew the battery terminal with it.

Plug key for all trim levels with automatic transmission

For those who have a mechanical transmission, it is easier to use a set of ring wrenches. We need standard sizes 8, 10 and 12 mm. That's all.

Let us indicate how the drain plugs are designated in the AvtoVAZ catalog:

  • 21120-1011061-00 – plug for equipment with automatic transmission;
  • 21080-1011062-00 – washer for the plug (automatic transmission only);
  • 21080-1009156-00 – option for cars with manual transmission.

The filler plug is designated by the numbers 11190-1009146-00. And the control dipstick is a part from the VAZ catalog with number 21120-1009045-00.

To unscrew the oil filter housing, use a puller. There are universal pullers on sale, and a cup puller (Renault 7711381992) is also suitable. The choice is made based on standard parameters: diameter is 76 mm, number of edges is 12.

Cup puller

If we talk about the oil filter itself, part 21080-1012005-08 was installed from the factory. This is a filter produced in the city of Livny. You can look for an imported replacement, but keep in mind that the height of the case should not be less than 70 mm. Otherwise, the oil will not cool well.

Selection of analogues

The screw plug that closes the hole in the crankcase of cars with automatic transmission is not a unique VAZ part. You can use analogues instead:

  • Renault 77 03 075 348;
  • Fa1 153.520.001 (for a tetrahedron rod).

If you remove the spaces from the top number, you get the designation of the traffic jam for Largus.

It will be more difficult to find a replacement for the washer. Renault, which produces part number 11026 5505R, will help here. Without a space, we again get the AvtoVAZ part designation: 110265505R - sealing ring from Lada Largus.

The VAZ plug number 21080-1009156-00 has its own long history. It appeared on Eights and is suitable for front-wheel drive Lada engines that are not equipped with an automatic transmission. A unique feature of the part is the presence of a tapered thread. Of course, it cannot be made on a lathe.

What filters can be installed?

Before installing a new filter element on the Lada Granta, you need to figure out which consumable material is best to choose. The purpose of the oil filter is to clean the engine oil from wear particles formed during the operation of rubbing parts, as well as from unburnt solid fuel particles.

In most cases, the oil filter assembly is a metal cup in which a filter element folded like an accordion and two safety valves are installed: anti-drainage and bypass.

Oil filter element design

The most popular manufacturers of filter materials that can be installed on the Lada Granta are the following brands: Renault, Mann, Knecht, Union, etc. One of the best filters can rightfully be considered the original Renault filter 7700274177 and its analogues.

True, there is a possibility of purchasing a fake, so it is better to buy in specialized stores and require certificates for the products. Imported consumables are expensive, so you can use domestic filters made for VAZ cars.

Selecting and replacing the oil filter for Granta Liftback

The range of manufacturers of cleaning elements for Lada Granta Liftback is quite wide. The brand has no fundamental significance provided it is legally acquired. Since 2010, the VAZ manufacturer has gradually abandoned the use of filters with a “long” skirt, giving preference to a “short” one.

The main difference between the two types of filters is the length of the base. In the first case it is 8.5 cm, in the second 6.0 cm. The reason for the transition is optimization and rational use of the capabilities of components. Changing the length of the base does not in any way affect the functionality or flow filtration.

What kind of oil is used in Liftback from the factory?

By default, the manufacturer fills in the break-in fluid before the first maintenance. Class - mineral base. The fluid must be replaced upon reaching a mileage of 2–3 thousand km. Subsequent operation of the machine with break-in oil is extremely unsafe for the functionality of the engine. Oil consumption Lada Granta Liftback Regardless of the quality of assembly and components, the power unit consumes oil. The natural needs of the engine are at the level of 100 - 150 ml / 1000 km. Exceeding the permissible range indirectly indicates the presence of a malfunction.

Classification by temperature conditions For clarity, we indicate the data in a tabular version:

MarkingTemperature
5Woptimal for the climatic region – up to (-35℃)
10Wmoderate temperatures up to (-30℃)
15Wup to (-25℃)
20Wup to (-20℃)

Selection of components and consumables

First of all, let's look at how to choose an oil filter. Filters with the number 21080-1012005-00 were produced by the VAZ plant for a long time, and they were installed on Prior engines. Then, with the advent of the Grant family, filters began to be supplied from the plant in Livny. These parts are always identified by the number 21080-1012005-08. And only a filter from the city of Livny can be installed in a new car.

Oil filter for Lada Granta

The height of the “new filters” housing is 74 mm. And for VAZ filters it was 75 mm. The difference here is practically zero, but anything less than 70 mm in height will not suit us.

Next we talk about the choice of oils. From the factory, 8-valve engines are always filled with break-in fluid, which is replaced after 2500 km. At TO-1, until November 2015, Shell material was used - we are talking about semi-synthetic Helix HX7 (10W40). Then we switched to using Rosneft oils with the same viscosity.

The filling plug is designated as 11190-1009146-00. And the part with the designation 21080-1009045-00 is a control probe.

What engine oil is best to fill?

If a motorist wants to do everything correctly, he must know not only the rules for choosing a lubricant, but also how much oil should be in the Lada Granta engine according to the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer. As a rule, the Russian market offers a huge number of liquids that are ideal for the engine of a domestic car, but you should choose the lubricant that meets the general operating conditions of the car. In any case, the lubricating fluid must belong to the SJ or SL groups, and have an API classification.

When independently choosing engine oil for the Lada Granta, the car enthusiast must take into account several important characteristics, in particular, fluid viscosity, classification group, brand, and manufacturer. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations and the temperature range of the substance.

A domestically produced car is equipped with power units having 8 or 16 valves. However, modifying the engine does not affect the selection of filters. According to the advice of competent specialists, the choice should be made on those devices that have a pair of valves: anti-drainage and bypass. By purchasing this element, you will ensure the effectiveness of the filter.

Functions of motor oil

Except for bearing lubrication, without which they would not work for any significant time. oil performs several functions, each of which is worthy of separate consideration:

  • lubrication of rubbing parts, especially sliding bearings of the crankshaft and timing shaft;
  • removal of excess heat from friction points to further increase the service life of parts;
  • cleaning the parts of the piston group and the gas distribution mechanism from carbon deposits and soot;
  • the formation of a protective layer that protects engine parts during startup when there is no oil pressure.

Oil change

For 2190 gearboxes, the algorithm for changing the oil is quite simple - you need to loosen the drain plug on the transmission housing (you will need a 17 key), unscrew it by hand, placing a container for used oil under the hole in advance. Next, the plug is tightened (if the wrench is a torque wrench, use a force of approximately 32-45 N*m) and three liters of oil are poured through the filler hole (you will need to insert a hose into it). Using the dipstick, the oil level is brought to the optimal level (slightly below the maximum mark on the dipstick).

With boxes 2181 everything is somewhat more complicated. Changing the oil in the Lada Granta gearbox can be done either using the control hole on the crankcase or through the switch hole. In the first case, the procedure is almost identical to that used for 2190 boxes, with the exception of the volume of oil - it will require 2.2 liters. However, if the control plug cannot be unscrewed, refueling will need to be done by unscrewing the reverse switch. Access to it is blocked by the oil filter, the housing of which will need to be moved slightly to the side. To do this, you will need to remove the negative terminal from the filter, the screws securing its housing and two connectors - the mass flow sensor and the adsorber.

The oils used in 2181 and 2190, as a rule, belong to the GL-4 class (you should not use the seemingly higher quality GL-5: it contains various additives that “kill” the box synchronizers, but help preserve the gears) . The main oil markings are 80W85/90, 75W80/85/90. Manufacturers can be different - Lukoil, ROSNEFT, and TNK will do. Which oil viscosity to choose depends on the temperature range in which the car is supposed to be used: for example, from -26 to +35/45 80W85/90 is used, in the range from -40 to +35/45 - 75W85/90.

Question No. 107 from September 24, 2021, category: Service

Question:

Good afternoon. I have a Vesta 1.6 gearbox 21807. Tell me what is the maximum amount of oil that can be poured into the gearbox and is it possible to overfill the gearbox too much? Thank you.

Answer:

Dmitry good afternoon. The nominal filling volume of oil poured into the 2180 gearbox is 2.25 ± 0.05 liters, but this is a reference value. The control oil level should be located at the lower edge of the oil filler hole; if it is absent, oil is filled at the maximum mark on the dipstick. There is no need to pour oil into the gearbox. Excess oil in the gearbox will lead to oil squeezing out through the seals (oil seals) and ventilation (breather) of the gearbox. Best regards, Alexey Lyutov, LADA service.

Question No. 106 from September 19, 2021, category: Service

Question:

Hello! Tell me, when should I change the manual transmission oil for the first time on a new car - Granta Liftback 2021, and what kind of oil should I put in it? And the first engine oil change is at 2-3000 or 15,000 km?

Answer:

Mikhail, good afternoon. The oil in a manual transmission must be changed every 180 thousand km. Question:

good evening, Lada Granta FL 2021 8 valve, the check engine light came on and the car lost power, what could be wrong?

Answer:

Good afternoon. The "Check Engine" warning light comes on when there is a malfunction in the engine management system, usually associated with the emission control system, such as misfire in the engine cylinders, or incorrect readings from the oxygen sensor. If such malfunctions occur, the engine goes into emergency mode with reduced power. To accurately identify and eliminate the malfunction, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics at a LADA dealership. I recommend contacting your nearest dealer. Changing the oil in the Granta gearbox

How to fill a Lada Granta with oil into a box is again determined by the type of gearbox. Let's start with the mechanics.

  • The car is driven onto an inspection hole or overpass. Preferably after a long trip.
  • The protection is removed from the drain; the edges are carefully cleaned with a wire brush.
  • The plug is screwed off, and the waste is poured into an unnecessary container.
  • During the process of draining the battery, the terminal is unscrewed, the fasteners securing the air filter are unscrewed, the air flow sensor and all hoses with cables that interfere with dismantling the housing are turned off.
  • The filter moves to the side.

  • The drain hole is clogged with a lid.
  • The dipstick is removed from the filling hole and a funnel is placed in its place. Oil is poured through it.
  • With the Lada in a strictly horizontal position, the level of transmission fluid is measured. The insufficient volume is replenished, the excess is drained. Drops and streaks are wiped off with a clean rag.
  • Everything dismantled is put back in place in the reverse order.

At the end of the work, a test drive is done with gear shifting, and the oil level is measured again. If necessary, it is corrected.

When changing the oil in an automatic transmission, the initial steps are the same: warming up the automatic transmission, placing the car on a ramp. Your further actions are as follows.

  1. Using a 19mm wrench, unscrew the drain bolt.
  2. The overflow plug is removed with a 5mm hexagon.
  3. The waste liquid is drained.
  4. A washer-seal is installed (necessarily a new one).
  5. The plug and bolt are returned to place.
  6. A short drive is made to warm up the oil. Its temperature should fluctuate between 60 and 80 degrees.
  7. Without turning off the engine, the gearbox first switches from position P to position 1, and then back. In each position, the lever must be held for approximately 5 seconds.

A control check of the lubricant level is also carried out with the car body strictly horizontal. During the oil change process, all elements are wiped dry with paper or a lint-free cloth.

Is it possible to change the oil filter without changing the oil: rules and tips

Drivers who take care of their cars know that an important point in car maintenance is regular oil changes. The oil change procedure is usually accompanied by replacing the oil filter - this must be done so that accumulated debris in the oil filter does not get into the new lubricants. But problems can occur with a new oil filter, and then the question arises: is it possible to replace it while maintaining the oil in the engine? Let's consider this issue in detail.

1. When might it be necessary to replace the oil filter without changing the oil? 2. Is it possible to replace the oil filter without changing the oil 3. How to replace the oil filter without changing the oil

There are several main situations when the driver has a question: is it possible to replace the filter, but leave the oil filled:

  • Forgot to change the filter when changing the oil. If the driver is not particularly experienced, he may have heard that the oil needs to be changed regularly. But at the same time, he does not know that this procedure also involves replacing the filter. If new oil has already been poured into the engine, but the filter has not been replaced, such a need may arise;
  • There is no filter at the time of oil change. Modern cars are equipped with systems that indicate when the oil needs to be changed. Experts recommend performing such work more often than the car itself recommends, and often such systems operate in situations that can be considered critical - when the oil is completely dirty and harms engine components. If your car requires an oil change, it needs to be done as soon as possible. But it is not always possible to have the required oil filter at the time of replacement, especially if the car model is not the most common. Many drivers decide to change the oil, while ordering a filter and planning to replace it when it arrives;
  • The filter is defective or its quality is poor. At the moment, you can find on sale not only original components for the car from the manufacturer, but also various analogues, including those of poor quality. Such filters often have problems with seals, which causes oil to leak out during operation.

Some drivers decide to replace the oil filter for other reasons. For example, among owners of VAZ cars, there is a widespread opinion that the oil filter needs to be changed 2 times during 1 period of oil operation in order to increase its efficiency.

Is it possible to replace the oil filter without changing the oil?

We recommend reading: Which oil filter is better to choose

Knowing the design of a car engine and the path of oil movement during operation, you can understand that there will not be a large oil leak if you unscrew the oil filter and install a new one in its place. When the car is idle, lubricant flows into the oil sump, which is significantly lower than the filter element. Accordingly, the bulk of the oil does not come into contact with the oil filter when the engine is not running, and only small oil residues stored in it - about 200-250 ml in volume - can leak out when the filter is removed.

Please note: There is another way from craftsmen on the forums on how to preserve oils, but at the same time replace the oil filter. They advise draining the oil into a separate canister, then replacing the oil filter, and then refilling with the previously used oil. We do not recommend doing this, since there is a high probability of various contaminants getting into the oil during the draining and filling process.

Replacement instructions

Changing the engine oil in a Lada Granta requires preparation; in particular, the car must be located on a pit or overpass; it is important to install it so that you can access the crankcase. It is extremely important to secure the car using the handbrake.

Initially, the motorist needs to get to the drain hole. If you have a 16-valve engine, you will most likely have to remove the crankcase protection. The next step is to remove the engine neck cover and loosen the drain plug, which is located in the pan.

Before finally freeing the drain hole from the lid, the motorist will need a drain container; it is preferable to choose an empty 5-liter canister, which will allow the waste to be completely drained. You should not remove the container with the replaced fluid immediately; you need to wait about 20 minutes, which will ensure complete removal of the lubricant from the power unit.

After draining the lubricant, the container is moved to the oil filter. As practice shows, it is not always possible to remove the filter element with bare hands; often you have to resort to using a special wrench to do this.

As a result of the procedure, it is important to close the drain hole, get rid of smudges, and take the waste container aside. If the motorist decides to change the type of fluid, the power unit must be additionally cleaned using special substances

Before replacing, the new oil filter is lubricated with the same substance that is poured into it.

In order for a DIY oil change in Grant to be successful, you need to install a new filter device, having first lubricated the body with a new engine substance. It is worth noting that the sealing ring needs to be processed, after which the new filter can be placed in its rightful place, but the part should not be pinched.

Next, you need to remove the plug on the filler neck of the Lada Granta, provide the power unit with a sufficient amount of lubricant, supplying new fluid very carefully and carefully, which will protect against leaks and overflow. Once the entire contents of the canister are in the engine, you need to check the oil level

To do this you will have to use a probe. If everything is done correctly, the substance should exceed o, but not reach the “max” line

Once the entire contents of the canister are in the engine, you need to check the oil level. To do this you will have to use a probe. If everything is done correctly, the substance should exceed o, but not reach the “max” line.

When you are sure that the oil level is normal, you need to replace the filler cap and activate the power unit. The engine should run for several minutes, which will allow the oil indicator sensor to be installed in the correct position.

As a result, the engine is turned off and the lubricant level is checked again. If necessary, the motor receives a new portion of the missing substance.

Let's warm up the engine!

  1. Armed with a key, unscrew the drain plug on the engine sump (but not completely).
  2. We place a suitable container under the hole and now remove the plug completely. We unscrew the filler plug, which is located on the valve cover. Drain the oil, waiting until it completely flows out spontaneously (after the drops have disappeared).
  3. Screw the plug on the pallet.
  4. Unscrew the old filter. If he’s “stuck”, then we use proven methods:
  • with a screwdriver (we pierce the body and rotate it like a lever);
  • a piece of sandpaper appropriate for the size of the filter housing;
  • special puller (purchased), etc.
  1. Clean the seat for the filter on the mating surface of the motor with a rag.
  2. We fill the new filter with oil to impregnate the internal element (manipulation prevents short-term oil starvation of the system during startup);
  3. We wind up a new “consumable”.
  4. Make sure that the drain plug is tight (don’t forget about the new sealing washer - install it to replace the old one).
  5. Fill in new lubricant in the required volume (do not exceed the level - there is a risk of damage to the seals);
  6. We screw the plug on the filler neck, start the Lada Granta engine and observe.

The monitoring process is necessary for the following purposes:

  • make sure there are no oil leaks through the new filter (if there is one, “press” the element by tightening it);
  • make sure that the filter is suitable and the LADA Granta lubrication system is functioning normally (this is indicated by the lamp on the dashboard going out after 4-5 seconds).

Which filter is better, the car owner ultimately decides for himself. Installing a high-quality filter element (of course, and using conditioned oil) on the Lada Granta version 8 or 16 valve will ensure long-term operation of the engine without unpleasant malfunctions. Carrying out the replacement task yourself is not at all difficult. If the owner is faced with this procedure for the first time, it is better to go to a workshop, where you can see with your own eyes all the subtleties and sequence of actions.

Preparing for replacement

First, you need to warm up the gearbox so that the oil warms up a little and acquires the desired fluidity (by the way, this is why it is not recommended to change the oil in winter - it thickens too much at low temperatures). In order to warm up the transmission, you should run it in a little - drive about 10-15 kilometers in a quiet mode so as not to overload the box. Such a procedure not only heats up the oil, but also lifts various wear products from the bottom of the crankcase, which inevitably appear after operation. Next, you need to put the car on a lift or pit, wait about 5-10 minutes for the oil to cool a little (if you drain it immediately after running in, you risk getting burned) and climb under the bottom of the car.

Step-by-step instruction

Changing the lubricant begins with preparing the car. Make sure the car is on the handbrake to avoid putting yourself in danger. Warm up the engine to operating temperature, then turn it off.

  1. If access to the drain hole is difficult, remove the crankcase protection from the car.
  2. Prepare all the keys, a container to drain the old lubricant, newspaper and rags.
  3. Wear rubber gloves and then remove covers and hatches.
  4. Loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise with a spanner.
  5. Place the container under the tray by unscrewing the cap. Make sure that the gasket on the plug does not fall into the container with the old lubricant.
  6. Unscrew the old oil filter by turning it 2-3 cm. Wait until the oil drains.
  7. Place a wrench with a belt around the filter to loosen it half a turn. Remove the key by unscrewing the filter by hand.
  8. Next, tighten the plug using a wrench.
  9. Wipe off any grease stains with a rag and take away the container with the old oil.
  10. Apply a layer of old grease to the rubber gasket at the bottom of the new filter, which needs to be checked for damage.
  11. Install the new filter by sliding it onto the threads. Secure it.
  12. When cleaning grease, remember not to use water or soap.
  13. To pour lubricant into the engine, lift the hood of the car, unscrew the filter cap, and pour in new lubricant using a funnel. Do not fill all 4 liters. Check the lubricant level using the dipstick. The 50th division corresponds to the norm.
  14. Install the cover. Until the substance is filled in, the engine cannot be started.
  15. Start the engine to make sure the oil indicator reads "normal". Check for lubricant leakage.
  16. Turn off the engine, put away the tools, and adjust the lubricant level if necessary.

The lubricant has been replaced.

How to unscrew it if it's stuck?

I’ll tell you a few ways that will 100% help you unscrew this element, so here we go:

  • Trite with your hands
    . Often you just don’t have enough strength, just call a “more powerful” person and everything can work out. I will say this in 80% of cases they unscrew it by hand. YES, and you need to tighten it again with your hands, tightly! IT'S ENOUGH!
  • Special key
    . I already wrote about it once, you can, of course, it’s not always at hand, but if you have a friend with a car, he can drive to almost any spare parts store and buy it. I personally even saw it in several supermarkets, the cost is a penny, about 200 - 300 rubles. Everything with it is quite easy and simple, we hook it on and unscrew it, of course, the body of the element will get wrinkled, but actually we don’t need it anymore.
  • Rope and screwdriver (another lever)
    . Sometimes they also use an old alternator or timing belt. What we do is twist a loop around the filter, tighten it with a screwdriver, tightly. And we try to unscrew it. The main thing is that the rope or belt does not slip.
  • A hammer and a long, strong screwdriver
    . Actually, this method is used to unscrew most intractable filter elements. Since the walls of the element are soft, they are usually aluminum, or tin, and other soft metals. It breaks through very easily (just like a tin can). What we do is drive a long and strong screwdriver all the way through, that is, so that it goes in on one side and comes out on the other. And then we unscrew it like a lever. The most important thing is that everything can be done without a special key, and actually using the tools that are always in the garage. The only downside is that your hands are dirty, because some of the oil is always inside.
  • Hammer and chisel
    . This is generally the method that they say “ATAS”, there is nothing to explain here, we take a chisel and “fuck” it with a hammer, the most important thing is to hit closer to the bottom, to the place of fastening, and counterclockwise. The case, of course, will be all dented, but the most important thing is to unscrew it. The downside here is not only that you can get dirty, but also that you can hit the engine block with a chisel. I personally recommend the method with a screwdriver, it is still less dangerous.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated, you can do without a special key, just pierce the housing with a screwdriver.

Replacement operation

It is recommended to change the oil only when the engine is warm. And yet, it would be better to drive the car into a pit. Otherwise, you will have to find the drain plug by touch. Only the replacement procedure is discussed here. A list of recommended materials is provided in Chapter 3.

Disconnecting the battery from the network

First of all, you will need to disconnect the negative terminal. Here you need a “10” wrench (see figure). Next, unscrew the filler plug, and then perform the following steps:

  1. Make sure that the filler neck has been opened;
  2. Use a 12mm spanner to unscrew the drain plug. It is not necessary to remove the crankcase protection (Fig. 1);
  3. The cork is unscrewed as follows: make two turns with the key, and then, substituting a free container, unscrew the cork by hand (Fig. 2);
  4. You have to wait until the oil drains out completely. Know that the temperature of the waste material is 70-80 Gy. Ts.;
  5. If you change the filter, first loosen the fastening with a special puller (Fig. 3). The filter housing will be accessible from the engine compartment;
  6. A new filter needs to be prepared: oil is applied to the sealing ring, and the filter itself is filled with new material (Fig. 4). In this case, 100-150 grams of oil (1/2 volume) are used;
  7. After preparation, the filter is installed, tightened, then pressed with a puller (3/4 turn);
  8. The drain plug is screwed into its rightful place. You need to press it harder, but try not to break the thread;
  9. 3.2 liters of oil are poured through the filler neck (for all engines).

If the filter has been changed, add another 100 ml to the indicated figures. Steps 2, 3, 5 and 6 are illustrated in the photo.

The last step is to connect the battery to start the engine. It is necessary to ensure that the control lamp goes out. Then check the oil level using the dipstick and, if necessary, top up (100-200 ml).

This engine warning light should come on for a couple of seconds after starting.

Choosing a puller

What kind of universal pullers have not been invented to make life easier for the car owner. But any puller always belongs to one of the types: chain, rod or plier puller. Each of the three types is illustrated in the photo.

Everyone knows that universal pullers are inconvenient to use. Yes, and they are expensive. Therefore, sanding paper, cloth gloves, etc. are used. But it often turns out that the filter is screwed on tightly.

The outer diameter of the Granta oil filter is 76 mm. A part manufactured by Renault can serve as a puller for it. This part is shown in the photo, and it is called a “cup puller”.

Oil filter puller Renault (7711381992)

The number of the specified part in the Renault catalog will be as follows: 7711381992. Typically, those who do not use pullers are recommended to do this:

  1. It is necessary to pierce the filter housing with an awl or a flat screwdriver;
  2. The screwdriver should go 40-50 mm into the filter cavity. It is then used as a lever.

Maybe these tips are worth considering. The main thing is that what is shown in the figure below does not happen.

Oil filter after replacement

Use common sense, and then everything will work out. Good luck.

Work order

  1. Before changing the engine oil of your Lada Granta, warm it up - just drive 10-15 kilometers.
  2. Drive the car into a garage with an inspection hole/on an overpass or lift it with a jack.
  3. Check the engine and oil: the latter should be hot, the engine should be warm and turned off.
  4. Place a container with a volume of 4-5 liters (no less!) under the drain hole; waste material will be collected in it.
  5. Take a spanner and unscrew the drain plug. Be careful - the plug is usually screwed tightly, do not damage it with unnecessary force.
  6. Let the oil drain - this will take at least ten minutes. To make the process go faster, you can remove the dipstick and unscrew the oil filler plug.
  7. You need to find the oil filter on the back of the engine and replace it. In most cases, no special effort is required - turn it counterclockwise, it can be removed by hand; if unscrewing it is problematic, use a special device for removing the filter.
  8. Clean the old gasket from the seat with a rag.
  9. Take the new filter, lubricate it with new oil and screw it into place by hand. When the O-ring makes contact with the cylinder block, turn the oil filter another three-quarters of a turn.
  10. We return the drain plug to the pan and screw it in, insert the dipstick back.
  11. We proceed directly to filling the engine oil. Pour oil into the filler hole, tighten the neck with the plug clockwise.
  12. Testing. Run the engine for a couple of minutes. Check to see if oil is leaking in the area of the filter and drain plug, and if the low oil pressure warning light is on. Stop the engine and allow the oil to drain into the crankcase. Check the oil level: if the mark is between the minimum and maximum values, everything is in order. If leaks are detected or the oil level is in doubt, tighten the drain plug and oil filter.

This completes the replacement process. It is advisable not to dump the waste material into the ground, but to use it again for any technical purposes.

Mastering these simple skills can save your car from breakdowns and you from unnecessary expenses at a car service center. Half an hour will be enough to complete all the actions, even if you are doing this for the first time. Do not forget to monitor the condition of your car, care for it competently and promptly, and replace consumables if necessary.

Crib

  • To replace, you need a 12mm hexagon , container , remover and a canister for filling;
  • It is better to work on a pit or a lift (the latter will require lowering/raising the car several times);
  • Do not overtighten the filter when installing;
  • Before pouring a new one, check the drain plug and the installation of a new filter;
  • If you removed the DPKV chip, put it back on before starting the engine;
  • After replacing and starting the machine, check that the oil pressure sensor goes out.

Don't forget to add comments. We are interested in everything that we didn’t like, missed in the article and any other comments.

The use of high-quality fuels and lubricants greatly contributes to the long-term operation of the vehicle without a decrease in its quality characteristics. Engine oil must be changed every 15 thousand kilometers or once a year, whichever comes first, within the framework of the technical regulations determined by the manufacturer. However, we recommend that you choose your range for changing the oil and oil filter on the Lada Granta depending on the operating conditions of the car. If your mileage is mainly highway, without unnecessary loads, then you can adhere to the official regulations of the manufacturer, but if your car is operated in dense city traffic, then we advise you to take care of changing the oil and filter every 7-10 thousand kilometers.

General issues

Let's consider general philistine questions about Granta and butter.

How to check the oil level in Grant

We check the level classically;

  1. The car must be turned off for at least 5-10 minutes;
  2. We take out the oil dipstick, wipe it with a rag and put it back;
  3. We take it out and look at the light - the level should be between MIN and MAX.

The dipsticks on the Lada suffer from the fact that they are difficult to read. You may need to wipe and lower the dipstick again.

If the dipstick is very difficult to read, you can go through the area indicating the level with fine sandpaper. This matting shows the oil level more clearly.
