Preparation for replacement and necessary tools

So, changing the oil in the rear axle of a VAZ 2105 or another car is most conveniently done in a pit or overpass. Think in advance where you can find them. Buy oil for filling - you should take 2 liters - there will be a little left for topping up.

Advice! Before changing the oil, be sure to warm up the car by driving it for about 10 kilometers. This way the oil will drain better.

Note! It is best and most convenient to change oils in an inspection pit or on an overpass. This will ensure the best access to all necessary units.

Changing the oil in the VAZ 2106 engine

As you know, oil needs to be changed at certain intervals. For the engine it is as follows: after a major overhaul - after 1000 km, it is necessary to change the oil and then every 10,000 kilometers of the vehicle. How to change the engine oil (see VAZ 2106: changing the engine oil and oil filter)? It’s very simple – drain and refill. This is short.

Detailed instructions below:

  • To drain the oil, you need to unscrew the drain plug in the engine sump. It is unscrewed using a 12mm hex and a wrench (for convenience).

Note. The oil must be changed when the car is warm. To avoid scalding your hands, you can use special rubber gloves.

Unscrew the plug and at the same time place a container under the drain hole. After the oil has drained, you can tighten the plug back.

  • Next, you should replace the oil filter. The old one can be twisted by hand if possible. If they are tightened well, then you should use a special puller. After removing the old filter, the new one is simply screwed into the hole.

  • After this, unscrew the filler cap, which is located on the engine valve cover, by hand. Then insert a watering can of suitable diameter into the neck.
  • Gradually add oil. Periodically you should look at the level of oil remaining in the canister. Approximately 3.7 liters of oil must be filled into the engine.

  • The amount of oil poured is determined using the oil dipstick. You need to take it out, wipe it clean with a rag, put it back in and then pull it out again and look at the marks. The oil level should be approximately halfway between the two marks.

Note. Do not fill oil until about! Too much oil in the engine will put excess stress on the seals and, accordingly, the oil will leak faster.

  • After reaching the desired mark, tighten the plug.
  • Then you should start the car engine. The “oil pressure” light should immediately light up on the instrument panel. After a few seconds of engine operation, the light will go out. The engine should run for several minutes.
  • After running the engine for several minutes, turn it off and measure the oil level again. If necessary, it should be topped up.

Some may argue that it is necessary to change the oil first with flushing oil, and then fill in a new one. But, as practice shows, this is not necessary. After changing the oil, you should check whether the drain plug in the engine sump is tightly tightened to avoid leakage.

Features of operation of the rear axle gearbox

During operation, the gear teeth contact each other, that is, they engage and disengage. No matter how well the gears are selected and adjusted, the teeth still wear out during operation. Therefore, the gears are made of high-quality hardened steel, and liquid transmission oil is poured into the gear housing. Oil tends to leak out and is held in the seal housing where the shafts exit. These seals are called oil seals and have a limited lifespan. When the seals wear out, oil stains appear on the housing where the shafts exit. If you do not replace them in time, the oil will leak out and its wear will accelerate many times over. In addition, dirt gets inside the housing through worn seals. To prevent this, the gearbox housing must be periodically inspected from the pit.

Without it, the machine will not only not work, although not even that way - it will work, but not for as long as we would like. In a VAZ 2106 car, oil is located in three places, namely in the engine, variable gearbox and rear axle gearbox. What kind of oil should it be? Mineral oil hardens “best”; it becomes the consistency of solid oil and, accordingly, starting the engine in cold weather becomes simply impossible without additional heating of the engine. What kind of oil should I pour into the VAZ 2106 gearbox?

In order for the unit to always function properly, it must be lubricated. If the transmission oil level is low enough, the fluid has expired and you are sure that it is not working efficiently, then it needs to be changed. For gearboxes of classic VAZ models, in particular 2106, the use of lubricants marked 75w90, 80W-85 and 85W-90 is allowed. In practice, the use of liquids with this viscosity classification is the most optimal, since the car will start without problems in cold weather. If possible, it is better to use a semi-synthetic or synthetic “transmission”.

As for directly choosing the brand itself, everything depends solely on your preferences and financial capabilities. According to data from the manufacturer AvtoVAZ, the main thing is that the consumable material complies with the GL-4 class. You can use foreign-made liquid if your wallet allows it, but domestic cars can also be filled with Russian-made products. Such transmission fluids include LADA Trans for gearboxes, Lukoil TM 4-12, Nordix SuperTrans, Slavneft, etc. In practice, many use Lukoil or liquid from the manufacturer itself - LADA Trans, as reviews from Internet users show, such oils cope well with the tasks assigned to them.

Many car enthusiasts also recommend using Castrol or TNK. If you believe consumer reviews, in the cold season on such a TM you can even start the engine without the clutch depressed. As for the total volume, by purchasing one canister of transmission lubricant you can fill both the gearbox itself and the gearbox. On average, the filling volume is about three liters. In any case, the lubricant must meet standards and be of high quality; it is strictly not recommended to use counterfeit and suspiciously cheap products, as you will later encounter more serious problems. Also, before adding new lubricant, it is necessary to flush the gearbox so that the remains of all the “working off” are removed from the unit.
