Doors are an important body element of any car; various types of electrical devices are installed on them (window lifters, for example, or electric locks that open and close the doors when the alarm goes off), glass is also installed on the doors thanks to which the car’s aerodynamics improves, as well as thanks to them, it becomes less cold in the car and even reduces consumption (If you have ever driven long distances with all the windows fully open, then you know by how many liters approximately the consumption increases), but this is not the point, but the fact that over time, any metal ages and becomes less durable, with the hinges that hold the doors in exactly the same story, and therefore if you take old cars (around the 80s), then you most likely noticed that the doors are not level, and if you open them and shake them with force up and down, you will feel a backlash, this backlash arises due to worn out hinges, you can’t remove it in any way, well, only if you don’t change the hinges with the fingers that hold them (In this case, you will need a drill), but if you don’t want to drill anything and you just won’t pay attention to the play, that is, there is one option thanks to which the doors can be raised a little higher (the play will not disappear) we will tell you how to do this today in this article on adjusting doors on classic cars.
Note! To make adjustments, you will need the following tools: Impact screwdriver, as well as washers of different thicknesses, it is possible that you will also use a metal plate to replace the washers (Plate or washers, in principle, there is no difference, just the plate will fit completely and the washers partially, but still the adjustment with both the plate and the washers will be possible), in addition, if you suddenly decide to replace the hinges themselves and after replacing them, by the way, you will completely forget about the backlash for a while (Over time, the door will still sag, but usually after a very long time this happens if, of course, you don’t leave the doors open for a long time, because it is precisely because of the doors being open for a long time that the hinges sag), then you will need an angle grinder, a drill, a milling cutter, a hammer, a chisel and some other tools, but the most basic ones are those that we have listed, without them it will not work (By the way, if you can knock out the pin holding the loop with a chisel, then you will not need the grinder at all)!

How to adjust the doors on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107?
Note! If you suddenly cannot unscrew the bolts that the hinges are secured with an impact rotary screwdriver, then in this case, resort to drilling them, to do this, take a 6 mm drill and a good drill, and those bolts that cannot be unscrewed, first drill out their heads to a depth of about 6 mm carefully, then with an 8 mm drill, to a depth of approximately 4.5 mm, and when the heads are cut, remove the door, and unscrew the studs using pliers and, if necessary, spray them with WD-40!
1. There are several ways to consider them all, the first is to unscrew the bolts that secure the door hinges to the body (They are indicated by a red arrow, not all bolts are visible in the photo, in fact there are many more of them and there is also a lower hinge), after them when turning, you will need to put thick washers under them, like those shown in the small photo, thereby selecting the thickness and number of washers, you can align the door as you need, if you don’t want to constantly unscrew the bolts and want to finish the job as soon as possible, then cut all the washers in such a way that they fit under the loosened bolts and after which they can be clamped with the same bolts, thanks to this, you won’t have to constantly unscrew the bolts, but just loosen them a little, insert the cut washer and tighten it again, and so on until until the door is level.
2. The next method is to place a thick metal plate under the hinge; in general, a plate is taken; again, the thickness is selected individually; if the door hangs too low, then a thick plate will be needed; if it sags a little, then a thin one will suffice, well, so, what to make such a plate from, you ask, we answer: From any metal that most likely lies in your garage and has a small thickness so that it can be cut, if there is no such thing, then the plate can be made from a metal can, for example, or from anything else be (It’s all up to your imagination), in addition, the plate needs to be cut in the center as you can see in the photo below, just so that the bolts can be screwed in and so that this plate is not visible, make it in size, slightly smaller than the hinge, but only Cut it exactly to size in length so that the loop fits around it from the very top to the very bottom.
Note! To put such a plate under a hinge, you need to do the same thing, loosen the fastening bolts of this hinge a little and then place a plate under it, we recommend starting with the bottom hinge, since if you put it under the top one, then there is a possibility that the door will turn downwards fall over, and not straighten up exactly as needed!
3. And the last method, we’ll immediately warn you that it’s complicated (for some, but we resort to it only when the hinges are already terribly worn out and they have a terrible backlash), but still doable and still more reliable, it’s done as follows, the door is completely removed from the car, after which the middle part is drilled or sawed off with a grinder, under which the pin itself is installed (the middle part is indicated by a red arrow, in no case do not touch those parts that are shown by a blue arrow and by the way, we indicated the pin with a green arrow , so that you understand what it is) and finally the pin is removed and the hinge is removed from the car door and a new one is put in its place (A slightly different method for replacing hinges, but there is no need to drill or cut anything, it is explained in the video clip in the end of the article, if you are interested, check it out).

Door trim for VAZ-2106
The VAZ-2106 came off the assembly line in 1976, and until it was discontinued from production, the technologies for arranging the car's interior remained virtually unchanged. Therefore, the basis of the door trim was a material such as fiberboard, which swelled and deformed over time.
To replace the door trim yourself, you need to purchase tension material (imitation leather). You can also use Alcantara or carpet for the door upholstery. Make a new door card from fiberboard or moisture-resistant plywood of suitable thickness; plexiglass or plastic can serve as a “non-killable” material.
Tools needed:
The work is carried out in the following order:
- The door trim is removed. The main thing when dismantling the old casing is not to disturb the base or damage the fastening elements.
- Using a sharp cutting tool (for example, a knife or cutter), we separate the trim from the old door base.
- The old base must be placed on a new workpiece and outlined along the edges of the element (do not forget to cut holes according to the model of the damaged base for the fastening elements).
- Using a jigsaw, we cut out a new base and use a drill to make all the holes provided.
- From the new leatherette we cut out a new covering for the base, adding a few centimeters to the fold.
- We stretch the material onto the base, bend the edges to the reverse side and place it on the glue. If the base material used allows it, it can be additionally secured with staples.
- We install the trim in place, insert new clips and other door elements.

Replacement of VAZ-2106 doors
The biggest problem for a motorist is corrosion of the metal of car doors; replacement may be necessary for both the front door (and the driver's door is no exception) and the rear one. The price of door repairs in specialized auto repair shops can be unreasonably high, and the only option is to replace the door yourself.
To replace, you can purchase either a new door or a used one (previously used), already assembled with glass, door handles, and seal. At the same time, you should make sure that they are of good quality, especially the seal, card and door trim. The main thing is not to make a mistake and not to purchase “left doors”, which, although they will have the required markings and dimensions, will not fit your car. Either door moldings or various stickers are installed, which an unscrupulous seller can use to hide traces of corrosion.
The process itself will not take much time and a small set of tools:
- powerful Phillips screwdriver (power or impact) with a key for it
- hammer
- pliers.
Work order:
- first, open the door that needs to be replaced and use pliers to compress the limiter until the ends come out of the holes on the body;
We remove the limiter using a screwdriver and unscrew the bolts with which the door canopy is attached to the body (three bolts on top and two on bottom). If the force is not enough, you can use a hammer or a screwdriver;
Unscrew the bolts on the door
- Having unscrewed both canopies, remove the doors.
We install the door in the reverse order, but it may happen that it does not close. Then you will need to adjust the doors, or the door does not match your sample.

Lock and door cylinder of VAZ 2106. Replacement
During the operation of the VAZ-2106, all elements are subject to wear and tear over time. At the same time, an important property of the car is its security from unauthorized access.
We must pay tribute to the developers of the VAZ-2106, the door handle and lock are made to the best of their ability. However, the locking mechanism can also break (most often on the front door) for various reasons (due to careless handling). And replacing them is a labor-intensive process.
You will need the following tools:
- crosshead screwdriver,
- socket wrench (or socket) 8,
- extension,
- ratchet or wrench (for the head).
The process of removing the door handle involves minor preparatory work:
- remove the trim from the door (on which the lock is supposed to be replaced). Only then do we carry out the following work step by step:
We remove the casing photo using a socket wrench from the inside and unscrew the left nut holding the handle (held by two nuts);

Most often, the lock cylinder is the first to fail; it is reusable and constantly in use. To replace it you will need a flat screwdriver and a needle (or thin wire)
The process of replacing the VAZ 2106 larva:
- carefully remove the spring that wraps around the lock cylinder (throws the key away in the lock when opening), prying it with a screwdriver, and first remembering its original position in order to install it correctly later;
- then using a needle we squeeze out the larva fixing rod (it goes inside the larva), after which we remove the upper retaining ring and take out the larva.
- Installation of a new cylinder, as well as the lock itself, is carried out in the reverse order.
IMPORTANT! It is best to replace the cylinders simultaneously on all car door locks (including the trunk), so that if necessary, you can open all the locks with one key, rather than carrying a bunch of keys with you.
To carry out such repair work, no special skills are required, but it is better to carry out the work indoors, since disassembling and assembling the locking mechanism requires precision in the placement of parts. In principle, this service is not that expensive, so you can entrust it to specialists.

How to get to the mechanism
For VAZ classics, the design of the locks and mechanisms of the front and rear doors is almost the same. The only difference is that the drive of the locking part for the rear door has additional elements, the correction of which takes longer than when adjusting the front doors.
To dismantle it from the rear door of the VAZ, you will need a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver and a key size 8. The glass must be raised. Removal procedure step by step after removing the door card:
- Unscrew the lock button.
- Unscrew the locking rod bracket fastening nut and remove the washer.
- Unscrew the three fastening screws and remove the bracket.
- The bracket is removed from the door cavity along with the rods. For convenience, it is necessary to slightly bend the metal casing of the front linkage; do not bend the drive at a right angle.
- Remove the locking element from its place, unfasten the inner handle rod holder, remove the handle and drive.
- Using a screwdriver, remove the longitudinal drive hinge from the locking mechanism.
- Remove the retaining ring and disconnect the longitudinal drive from the locking rod bracket.
Installing the lock is carried out in the reverse order.
It is more convenient to adjust the correct position of the mechanisms when the bolts are not fully tightened.
Original patented locks on Zhiguli cannot be lubricated with oil, silicone lubricants, etc. Dirt from the mechanism is removed with technical gasoline. The unit is disassembled, the parts are rinsed and dried. When assembling the mechanism, the cams are lubricated with compounds containing flake graphite.
Replacing the door handle and its door lock on a VAZ 2106 is not very difficult, but you will need to be careful, because you will have to dismantle its trim.
Replacing the larva
Very often it is the lock cylinder that fails, so we will look below in more detail about how to replace it. To do this, you will need a thin wire or needle and a flat-head screwdriver.
First of all, we remove the spring, which throws the key in the lock when opening. Just pry it off with a screwdriver and remove it, first remembering its position so that you can put it back in the same way:

The cylinders are replaced in pairs, on both the left and right doors, and also at the same time as the trunk lock, so that you have just one key for everything! Otherwise, you will have to carry several keys with you, which is not very convenient. The price of the set is 300 rubles maximum, so your wallet won’t be too empty.

Adjustment
To adjust the door lock on a VAZ 2106 car, you will need a “10” key.
The front and rear door locks have the same design and are adjusted in the same way.
1. Outline the outline of the door lock latch.
2. Loosen the three bolts securing the door lock, adjust its position and tighten the fastening bolts.
To ensure proper operation of the door lock, change the position of the lock latch on the body pillar if:
- the door closes too tightly - move the lock outward;
— if the door closes poorly, move the lock inward;
— if the door goes down when closing, move the lock up;
- if the door rises when closing (sags in the open position) - move the lock down.
How to change
Raise the glass and remove the door trim (see Replacing the door trim).
From the end side of the door, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the two screws securing the rear groove...
...and, lowering it a little, we remove the tongue from the groove and move it to the side.
Use a slotted screwdriver or pliers to disconnect the lock release button rod.

In order to adjust the door locks, you just need a key “10” and a marker. The rear and front locks have no fundamental difference in adjustment.

Installation process

The position of the inner lock handle is adjusted by moving its bracket using oval holes on the inner door panel for fastening screws.
If the door does not open well with the internal handle, then loosen the screws securing the handle bracket and move the handle together with the bracket to the desired position and tighten the screws.
The tailgate lock of VAZ-2108, -2109 cars is also adjusted by changing the position of the latch, which has enlarged holes for the fastening screws.
Adjustment of the door position is achieved due to enlarged holes in the hinges for their fastening bolts.
The gaps between the doors and the body must be the same.
When adjusting, loosen the hinge fastening bolts, set the gaps taking into account the settlement of the door after loading it, and tighten the bolts.
To determine the amount of displacement of the hinges, it is necessary to first outline their contours on the front pillar.
To check the settlement, the load is applied to the door, slightly open at an angle of 5 °, with a uniform increase from 0 to 100 kg and followed by a uniform decrease from 100 kg to 0.
Setting the front left and right door locks
The adjustment begins with checking and reinstalling the lock latches. In 70% of cases, the doors stop locking and close the first time.
In other cases, the position of the handle is adjusted if the door does not open from the outside. To do this, you need to loosen the fastening screws, move the handle and bracket towards the front pillar. After adjustment, the screws are tightened.
On classic VAZ models, jamming and locking of the lock is often associated with stretched rods. The drives are removed, the tips are checked, and the creases are straightened.

Usually the lock moves along with the door and hits the lower or upper part of the latch, lifting the door. The situation can be corrected by adjusting the vertical position of the latch. If the door rises when closing, the latch must be lowered; if it falls, it must be raised. Another common situation is that the door closes easily, but does not stay closed properly. In this case, the door may open while driving (especially when turning), which can lead to serious troubles. If the lock is working properly, the problem is corrected by moving the lock inward, towards the car's interior.

How to adjust the door of a VAZ 2107
The front door of the VAZ 2107 is adjusted more often. This is especially true for the driver's side door. Door adjustment involves two stages:
- adjusting door hinges;
- adjusting door locks.
Before making adjustments, it is advisable to lubricate the locks and hinges with silicone grease. This will improve their operation and eliminate possible problems when the lock operates. To adjust the position of the hinges, you must perform the following steps:
- set the impact screwdriver to the unscrewing mode;
- loosen the hinge fastening screws with a sharp blow of a hammer;
- slightly lower or raise the door to even out the gap between it and the car body;
- tighten the fastening screws;
- check the door position;
- repeat the adjustment if necessary.
When the position of the door in the opening is adjusted, you can proceed to adjusting the lock, or rather, to adjusting the position of the latch. This is done like this:
- draw a line around the perimeter of the latch with a marker (this way you can find out its initial position;
- Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the three bolts securing the lock retainer;
- move the latch down or up so that the lock fits freely into it without hitting the top or bottom;
- if the door closes “with one click,” the latch must be moved slightly outward, but if it closes easily but dangles, move it deeper;
- tighten the fastening bolts;
- check the operation of the door lock;
- repeat the adjustment if the door does not close well enough.

Adjusting and lubricating the door lock of a VAZ (classic)

Before you start adjusting, make sure that all parts of the locks are intact and have no critical wear.
The adjustment of the front and rear doors is not particularly different. When carrying out work, the adjustment is carried out by the mating part and the lock latch installed on the inside of the door arch of the car body.
We loosen the three bolts securing the mating part, after which the mating part of the door lock will be available for movement along the plane.
We select the optimal position by eye and tighten the bolts. After closing the doors, we check the result.
If the door closes easily and a large gap forms between the door and the car body, you should release the latch and push it in a little.
If, when closing the door, it goes down, raise the latch a little up and back, if the door is down, lift the latch up.

There is another way to adjust the door lock of a domestic VAZ. Having slightly loosened the bolts securing the counter part, close the door and lightly press it down, choosing its optimal position when closed.
