The shaft itself rotates on two supports, in the form of bearings. One of them is located in a special socket on the front of the crankshaft, and the second is in a special hole in the gearbox housing, sealed with an oil seal.
Unlike the primary shaft, the secondary shaft has three support points: the first bearing (located in the place of the primary element), the second is located in the crankcase), and another one, which is located on the rear side of the gearbox.
On the driven shaft there are three gears, which mesh with the gears of the intermediate shaft. Each of them has synchronizers consisting of identical elements.
This device is similar for both gearboxes of the VAZ 2106. But the five-speed gearbox, however, has some differences. The first of these is the rear cover, on which a longer output shaft is mounted.
This shaft, in turn, contains a hub for the fifth gear synchronizers.
The intermediate shaft has also undergone some changes. Now, in addition to three standard gears, it houses a gear block for the fifth position of the gearbox and reverse gear. The mechanism itself was also subject to changes.
Mechanism maintenance
The gearbox of the VAZ 2106 model, like any other, is constantly moving, and the elements of which it consists are constantly heating up. In order to prevent their rapid wear, special gear oil is poured into the gearbox.
The volume of oil required for normal operation of the box is 1.35 liters. Also, this mechanism must be regularly inspected for oil leaks. Checking the fluid level is carried out approximately once a year, or once every 15,000 km.
Lubricant replacement should be carried out at least once every 5 years, or once every 50,000 km.

Malfunctions

The main structural elements of a five-speed transmission are the primary (item 11), secondary (item 27), intermediate (item 5) shafts, gear shift mechanism and crankcase (item 16). The shafts are installed in bearings: the primary is in two ball types, and the secondary is in three.
On the secondary shaft there are freely located gears that are constantly in mesh: first (pos. 28), second (pos. 25) and third (pos. 24) gears. The sliding clutch hub (pos. 21) for the third and fourth gear synchronizer is located on three splines of the secondary shaft. The fastening of the hub (item 26) of the first and second gears is similar.

Replacing a gearbox on a VAZ
The process of replacing such a unit, which is the dismantling and installation of a gearbox, is carried out on a car raised with a special lift or placed on an inspection pit. a) Push the gear shift knob down, then use a thin screwdriver to remove the locking sleeve and remove the handle.
b) Insert a pry bar (mounting blade) into the gap between the partition of the engine compartment and the engine and bend the eye washer of the bolt securing the (upper) clutch housing. c) Unscrew the bolt using a spanner (head) to “19”.
d) Using a socket with a universal joint at “13”, unscrew the upper mounting bolts (2 pieces) of the starter to the clutch housing.e) Having attached the extension, unscrew the starter mounting bolt (from below). f) Remove the clutch housing cover by unscrewing the four bolts using a “10” wrench.
g) To disconnect the flexible shaft of the speedometer and the drive housing, unscrew the fastening nut. For safety reasons, we fix the lower part of the gearbox housing with a special stop.
h) Having unscrewed the nuts securing the cross member (2 pieces), move the gearbox back until it comes out of the guide bushings and remove it from the car. i) Disconnect the clutch housing.
Further replacement of the gearbox with a VAZ 2106 includes repairing the removed (or preparing a new) transmission and installing it in its original place in the reverse order to the above. It is recommended to begin installation operations by lubricating the splined end of the input shaft with CV joint grease-4 (a thin layer).

- Next, remove the muffler and disconnect the cardan coupling from the box flange.
- On the right side of the box there is a reverse switch, which should also be turned off.
- Then loosen the nut and disconnect the speedometer cable from the gearbox.
- We remove the slave cylinder, but leave the hose on it.
- After unscrewing a few more bolts, remove the cover on the clutch housing, then remove the cardan transmission.
- Having installed the support under the gearbox, unscrew the four bolts that secure the crankcase to the cylinder block, move it aside and remove it from the guide bushings.
- By moving the gearbox back, the input shaft is freed from the driven disk hub.

Hello everyone, gentlemen. What prompted me to write this post is that repairing transmissions on VAZ cars of the classic family is a very common thing. And although the gearbox is as simple as three kopecks in its design, there is no specific guide for dummies on how to repair it on the Internet. There are a lot of resources on which disassembly and reassembly of the gearbox are written, but when it comes to defective repairs, a masterpiece inscription is written everywhere - replace faulty parts. How can an uninitiated person understand which parts are faulty and which are not? Apparently there is a dead end here, and it is not clear what is happening and why, that is why I decided to make this post. Let's start with the fact that the main gearbox faults can be divided into several groups. 1. Oil leaks. 2. Failure to engage gears/crunch when shifting/crashing under load/crashing when starting off. 3. Rumble during operation / hum at idle / hum and knocking at idle / hum in a certain gear. 4. Other rare malfunctions. Let's go, 1 Oil leak. Everything is very simple here, leaks occur when the fastening of the detachable parts of the gearbox is loosened, as well as when cracks appear in parts of the gearbox. By the way, I don’t consider leaks from the seals, because in all the instructions at the end there is a footnote stating that when disassembling the gearbox, it is MANDATORY to replace the seals of the primary and secondary shafts, as well as gaskets, during reassembly, and there are no exceptions here. Damage to the input shaft seal is not as common as damage to the secondary shaft seal. This is due to the peculiarities of its protection by the rear flange, under which abrasive debris from the roads inevitably falls, gradually destroying it. I recommend replacing the input shaft oil seal together with the release guide; this operation will significantly save your time, with a slight increase in the cost of the part. The rear oil seal is replaced separately, on a previously cleaned surface; I also recommend lubricating the outer lock of the oil seal (its metal cage) with sealant, since when installing or removing the oil seal, if you put marks on the seating surface, the oil will begin to leak through them over time. And your box will freeze again. Again, I remind you that after installing the oil seal, when threading the shaft, the working edge of the oil seal MUST be wetted with engine oil. (this applies to any seals, not just gearboxes). Looks like we've sorted out the seals. Regarding the assembly of detachable joints, I always go over all surfaces before assembly with Scotchbrite (such an abrasive cloth is akin to a sponge with 1500-grit sandpaper); it removes all the old gasket/sealant, and prepares the surface with a fine scratch. We degrease and apply a thin layer of sealant (0.1mm), put a gasket, and another thin layer of sealant on it. Air dry for 10 minutes. And we tighten it, you only have one try, otherwise everything will be a new one with a new gasket. To avoid bugs, I recommend pre-assembling the gearbox without gaskets in order to check the gearbox for any jamming. it should rotate (perhaps not very easily) but with the help of a hand on the helicopter on the shank. If there is leakage from the reverse sensor connector, replace the copper washer on it. If replacement is not possible, anneal the old copper washer with a torch and cool in water, this will restore its softness. As a special case, we can consider leaks through the threaded connections of the pan; this is a consequence of damage to the pan gasket. There have also been a couple of cases where the rear gearbox cover was damaged by bolts that had come loose from the 5th gear fork. In one case, a piece was knocked out of the back cover, such damage is impossible not to notice, and the second time the bolt made a crack through which oil leaked. In this case, it is cheaper to seal the lid with argon. After repair, such a cover works no worse than a new one. We seem to have sorted out the oil leaks, now we need to sort out the gears. So, there is a little trick that will help you like aspirin before you go deep into the checkpoint. When leaving the 5th gear, first try to tighten the shank nut of the gearbox. To do this, throw off the cardan with the donut, you will see a helicopter and a thick washer sticking out in the middle of it under the locking ring and nut. For these cases, I just bought a long 30mm socket and a large wrench. Basically, if you pull until the hell out of it, you won’t break the hardened shaft anyway, and if it’s untwisted, it will go quite easily. in half the cases, after this operation, the 5th gear returned to the box, but you shouldn’t be too happy about this, which means that the 5th reverse gear fork has already received significant damage and soon you will need to dismantle the gearbox. But let’s say it didn’t help and the checkpoint has already been removed, how can we understand what and why. First fork. The trace of contact with the coupling is clearly visible on them; it should be extremely shallow, because the fork is covered with wear-resistant material, and if it is damaged, the fork becomes unusable. In general, if the contact mark in total exceeds 45 degrees (depth more than 0.2 mm), then the plug must be replaced.
