Principle of operation
The design of the sensor is a fairly simple element. It consists of a bronze body and a plastic insert in which a thermoelement is placed. When heated, the thermocouple changes its resistance and sends readings to the ECU. When certain resistance readings are reached, the ECU sends a signal to turn on the fan and other functions for which the DTOZH is responsible.

Car Kalina Universal. 2012 1.4 16ve =). Got a question. What does the engine temperature arrow show? I want to know if the thermostat is working
On Sunday I'm going under warranty to show the headlight fogged up, so at the same time I'll tell you about the thermos.
Added after 40 seconds:
The mileage is 1300 km, there are already problems with this car.
even in the city with the heater on it was impossible to heat up more than 75

It’s not like that for me, but on the next division after 90
If the indicator itself is not glitchy, then the thermos is definitely crap.
What if the thermostat is changed, but the situation remains the same? Temperature at 70 degrees. holds on. And how can the indicator be glitchy? PS The “related” Kalina has a problem.
And how can the indicator be glitchy?
Well, either the arrow itself is not working correctly (it’s a device - it may fail), or the coolant temperature sensor to which it is connected is not working. There are two coolant temperature sensors in the injection cans - one for the arrow on the dashboard, the second for the engine control controller. It’s actually easy to check: you need to connect a scanner and see what temperature the controller sensor shows. If it diverges from the pointer, it means that the pointer or the pointer sensor is faulty. If it matches, it means the new thermostat is faulty; this also happens all the time.

Symptoms of a problem
There are a number of typical problems in engine operation associated specifically with the engine temperature sensor, but it should be noted that these problems can also be due to other reasons; diagnosing or checking the sensor will help to accurately determine the problem.
- Floods spark plugs during a cold start;
- The car stalls when cold, the speed fluctuates;
- The fan does not turn on;
- There are no increased engine speeds when warming up;
If you find such problems on your car, you need to check the sensor.
general information
Every modern car has a coolant temperature sensor. It plays an important role in the functioning of many systems.
In Kalina 2, this element is located in the thermostat housing. It was as if it had been screwed into it and then connected to the controller input. It, in turn, is connected to the main voltage source via a resistor. A low temperature indicator provokes a high resistance, an increased value - a decreased one. This is the principle of operation of the device.
The controller monitors the temperature of the coolant. This process is completely voltage dependent. When the engine is cold it is high, but when the engine is warm, on the contrary, it is low. The engine temperature affects many characteristics, the performance of which is controlled by the controller.
Thanks to this element, the control system performs the following functions:
- sets the ignition (its advance or retard);
- enriches with gasoline;
- captures changes in closed and open loop conditions.
The coolant temperature sensor monitors the volume of exhaust gases. Correct setting of the ignition angle guarantees its low amount. In this case, the operation of the motor is considered more rational.
Gasoline enrichment. At low temperatures, a pulse is instantly sent to the injectors, thereby eliminating fluctuations during engine overheating. This process ensures optimal engine operation at idle.
Changes and control under closed and open loop conditions. If the indicator breaks, pulses will come from the oxygen sensor, but they will not receive feedback. This will lead to poor idle performance. The operation of many vehicle systems is disrupted.
If problems arise with the performance of the element, the antifreeze circulation pattern is studied. The main symptom of problems with the cooling sensor is the rapid consumption of this liquid.
Checking the DTOZH
Since the coolant temperature sensor on Kalina is responsible for a large number of different functions, its failure will not lead to anything good, so you need to check it to determine the condition of the sensor.
To check, you will need a regular multimeter for 500 rubles and boiling water. The sensor is dismantled and placed in boiling water with the multimeter probes already connected to it in advance, and on the multimeter it is necessary to monitor the readings; they should increase as the liquid cools. For a more accurate check, it is best to use a thermometer to compare temperature and resistance readings according to the table below.
Step-by-step verification instructions
- We dismantle the sensor;
- We set the multimeter switch to the resistance measurement position of 2000 Ohms;
- We connect the probes of the device to the sensor;
- We boil water, then place the sensor and thermometer there;
- We monitor the readings as the water cools and compare them with the table;
Table of dependence of resistance on temperature of DTOZH
You should also pay attention to the sensor connector; quite often the wires on the connector, due to the constantly high temperature, are subject to rapid wear, namely damage to the insulation. If the connector is damaged, it must be replaced with a new one.
How to check the performance of the DTOZH?

In order to independently determine the serviceability of a thermistor-type measuring device, you need to acquire a multimeter and a thermometer that can withstand high temperatures.
You need to dismantle the device according to the instructions described above, and then connect it to a multimeter, previously set to ohmmeter mode.
Coolant is poured into a pre-prepared container, and the DTOZH and thermometer are placed there.
The antifreeze begins to heat up, and the owner looks at the resistance readings on the ohmmeter screen and at the thermometer, comparing the data with the plate to assess the accuracy of the device. Device data may vary from model to model, so it is best to use the instructions included with your existing device.
One thing remains unchanged - in devices with a negative coefficient, the resistance readings will fall with increasing temperature.

Replacement
Replacing the DVT is not a difficult job, but it requires basic skills in car repair. To carry out the work, it is necessary to drain the coolant, but some experienced mechanics change this part without draining; it is enough to prepare the necessary tools and wait for the engine to cool.
Step-by-step instructions for replacement with coolant drain
- Remove the negative terminal of the battery;
- Drain the coolant;
- Remove the connector from the sensor;
- Unscrew the sensor and install a new one;
- We assemble in the reverse order;
Step-by-step instructions for replacing without draining the coolant
- Removing the negative battery terminal
- Preparing a new sensor
- Remove the connector from the sensor
- Unscrew the sensor and sharply plug the hole with your finger
- We take the new sensor, bring it to the hole, remove the finger and insert the new sensor into the hole
It is clear that coolant losses are inevitable, but they are negligible if the entire operation is done quickly and thoroughly.
We hope our article was useful to you.
How to replace the coolant temperature sensor?
Before replacing, you will need to make sure that it is the coolant temperature sensor that has become unusable and is causing malfunctions in the functioning of the engine.
The procedure is as follows.
- First, disconnect the on-board network from the battery.
- We partially drain the antifreeze from the circuit.
- Disconnect the connector of the wires leading to the sensor.
- We arm ourselves with a key set to “21” and unscrew the faulty component.
- To ensure ease of operation, it is recommended to dismantle the air filter component housing.
- We check the removed sensor again by measuring the resistance value at its terminals, and if it does not meet the manufacturer’s requirements, then we can safely proceed to installing a new product.
The installation procedure is carried out in reverse order.
Why doesn't the cooling fan on the viburnum turn on? several reasons to choose from"
Many owners of this model probably have to look for an answer to the question of why the cooling fan on Kalina does not turn on.
If it stops working, there is only one way out: stop and wait until the engine cools down. Otherwise, it will boil, the pistons will jam, and hello, major repairs. Within the city limits, this is not so serious: if you are in a hurry, you can leave the car and get where you need to go by public transport in order to deal with the cooling system later. But between cities, a non-working fan is a great headache. If you don’t find the cause and don’t eliminate it, it can take 8 hours to drive 40 kilometers without a tow: you drive 2-3 km, then you stop and wait for it to cool down. It's going to be a fun trip! Especially if there are tired children behind you who were planning to quickly get there and start resting.
Why doesn't the cooling fan turn on on Kalina? There are several reasons for this. Some can be fixed on site, while others will require additional spare parts. But even if you can’t start the fan right away, you can at least assess the prospects and start waving the cable as it passes a couple of hours earlier, while you still have the strength to do something.
We discard the darkest option
Before checking the remaining components of the cooling system, you need to make sure that the worst has not happened to you, and. I must say that in Kalina this is an extremely unreliable unit and for some reason it breaks down often and frequently. There are cases when it stopped working, even if it was changed the day before yesterday. Therefore, many experienced owners of this car, when going on a long trip, take a spare one with them. Yes, just in case!
You can make sure that the thermostat is normal (or not) by touching the lower radiator pipe. If it remains cold, it means that the thermostat is no longer alive, and you need to get a backup one or ask for a tow. In the absence of both fellow travelers and supplies, you will have to crawl slowly and sadly to the nearest service station.
We ring the chain
Having excluded the thermostat from the list of probabilities, we check the electrical circuit. For starters, fuses (how to check them correctly,).
The first is the one that is directly responsible for the electric fan. It is located on the side of the console, where the front passenger's feet are. It’s not difficult to get to it: unscrew the screw that secures the cover with deflectors for blowing warm air - and in front of you is the required spare part.
If this fuse is intact, you will have to climb further into the additional block. Use a ten key to unscrew the fastening bolt and pull out the entire assembly. At this stage, you need to be patient and careful: extraction is significantly hampered by a whole bunch of wires going to the block. If you pull one out, you will be stuck on the highway for a long time. But it doesn’t take long to look for a fuse in the block: there is only one there, exactly the one you need.
If this part is normal, we immediately check the relays - they are located in the same block and transmit voltage to the fan motor. There are 2 of them: located above the mounting strip on the left edge is responsible for the operation of the fan at low speeds, the one on the far right turns on its high speed. Both must be in working order.
If no faults are found here, you will have to crawl under the hood.
What will please you with the fan itself?
You need to check both it and the temperature sensor. Let's take a look at the electric fan first. To ensure that the engine is working, its terminals are connected directly to the battery. If it starts, it means everything is fine with the fan. Let's move on to the sensor. Depending on what engine is on your iron horse, the actions will be different:
- For a carburetor: remove the plug connector of the temperature sensor (it is located, by the way, on the right radiator tank) and connect its terminals with a jumper. The fan started spinning - the sensor is working, the terminals just came off. Left dead - it's time to change the sensor;
- When using the injector, we look for the sensor next to the thermostat and remove the connector from it. If the fan starts spinning, it means that the emergency mode has turned on, and your sensor has already burned out.
