Replacing the front suspension shock absorber on the Lada Granta

Operations for removing the rear pillar of a Lada Granta

Work can be carried out on a level area; an inspection hole or a lift is not required. You also don't need a spring remover.

1. Fold down the rear seatback.

2. Use a screwdriver to pry off the rubber plug3. ...and remove it.

4. Unscrew the nut of the upper fastening of the shock absorber strut.

5. Place chocks (“shoes”) under the front wheels. Raise the rear of the car as high as possible so that the beam bends as much as possible. The beam can also be bent by hand in order to remove or install the stand. In this position, the beam has limited rigidity and you will be able to rotate it a few more centimeters. 6. Unscrew the nut of the shock absorber strut lower mounting bolt and remove the bolt from the hole.

7. Remove the lower end of the shock absorber strut from the bracket and remove the shock absorber strut with the spring.

Often, even after you have removed the strut from the car, the buffer rubber cushion remains stuck inside the rear strut mudguard body cup. In this case, reach in with your hand and pull it out.

8. Remove the spring from the shock absorber strut.9. Remove the bushing and lower cushion from the shock absorber rod.10. Remove the casing from the shock absorber.

11. ...and remove the compression stroke buffer from the housing.12. Replace the spring if cracks are found or the coils are deformed. It is recommended to replace both rear suspension springs, and they must be of the same group.13. Install the insulating gasket onto the spring so that the end of the spring rests against the protrusion of the gasket. Secure the spacer to the spring with duct tape or thin wire to prevent it from coming off when installing the spring.

14. Install the spring on the shock absorber strut so that its end rests against the protrusion of the lower cup.

15. Install the rear suspension shock absorber strut in the reverse order of removal. The lower end of the spring should face the wheel. When installing a shock absorber, it can be very difficult to get the extended rod of the shock absorber into the car body (into the hole in the cup). To facilitate this installation procedure, the use of a rubber piece of gas hose placed on the shock absorber rod (10-15 cm long) will help, which is easily directed into the body hole due to its flexibility, even if the rod is displaced relative to the hole, and subsequently, when the body is lowered, the rod follows the hose falls into its normal place.

16. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Rock it hard a few times. Finally tighten the nuts of the upper and lower shock absorber mountings.17. After 100 km, check and, if necessary, tighten these threaded connections to the required torques.

Replacing Lada Granta struts and supports - several important features

If the rear suspension is more or less clear, then the front suspension always hides more mysteries. It is the front struts and supports that most often fail. Unless you constantly pull a trailer or tow careless friends. The load on the front of the car is always increased, so you often have to work with the front suspension parts. Changing the front struts on a Grant is not so easy:

  • first you need to completely remove the rack and disassemble the lower parts of the chassis for subsequent installation on a new mechanism for damping road irregularities;
  • if the rack is installed as a new assembly, then there will be much fewer problems, you just need to install a new one in place of the old mechanism and reassemble it in the reverse order;
  • if only the liner is changed, it is worth completely disassembling the strut, removing the spring and taking out the shock absorber, checking the degree of wear of all parts and the need to replace them;
  • Next, you should replace the strut liner, carry out technical checks right at the assembly site and reassemble the shock absorber to its original position;
  • Next will be the installation of the rack in place, assembly and rough diagnostics of all the components that you repaired, this will give complete confidence in the quality of the work.

You need to acquire tools such as a set of wrenches and sockets, a spring puller, a pry bar, pliers, screwdrivers and other available tools. Otherwise, you will not be able to completely disassemble the part and carry out its normal restoration. Of course, there are certain difficulties in carrying out this process, so it is better to take your Lada Granta for service and complete all the work in just over an hour. We invite you to watch the video of the process of replacing the strut on front-wheel drive VAZ vehicles:

Will racks fit from Kalina to Granta?

In short, yes, but there are nuances that not everyone knows about. Granta has a slightly different rebound characteristic; the compression stroke buffer is half a centimeter smaller. Hence the lack of knock on the rebound. In all other respects there is no difference, the softness is at the same level, even the holes of the support bearings are the same.

The situation with Priora is somewhat different. If they assure you that the racks are completely suitable, do not believe them and refuse to purchase. Externally they are identical, the only difference is the angle of inclination and centering. In Granta, the stock is offset, in Priora it is strictly in the center. After installing the racks from Priora to Grant, the angle of inclination shifts by 3°. After 500 – 700 km. The wheel bearing will fail due to excessive load on the axle.

Springs and strut supports for Lada Granta - choose the best

It is better to install original springs. No manufacturer offers the same accuracy as VAZ in this case. There is only one reason for this - no one wants a manufacturer of springs specifically for Grants to do it efficiently and cheaply. Therefore, you have to give preference to stock solutions

As for the upper and ball joints of the Lada Granta struts, it is worth paying attention to the following features:

There is an opinion that factory spare parts are always better than analog ones. But in the case of the Lada Granta this is not at all the case. Sometimes you can find quite adequate spare parts that fit Granta from German and Japanese brands. And then you can buy really wonderful additions and parts that last for years. However, any part has its own service life, and this also needs to be remembered.

Article number and cost of good analogues

There are analogs on the market for the original Grant shock absorber struts. Third-party manufacturers produce units of varying quality.

Some of them are frankly low-grade defects, but there are also quite worthy specimens. The table below shows the brands of the best analogues, which perform excellently on Grant.

How to remove the spring and shock absorber on a Grant?

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with an ABS system, then before starting the repair process with shock absorbers and springs, it is imperative to remove the sensor of this safety unit.
  2. Now you can disconnect the tie rod. This manipulation involves simultaneously disconnecting the tip of the steering mechanism from the swing arm located on the shock-absorbing element.
  3. To prevent a large error in the installation angles of both Lada Granta wheels, before dismantling it is necessary to mark the location of the upper bolt with a washer, with which the suspension element is attached to the steering axle with its bracket. An ordinary marker can be perfect for this. This simple action will allow you to easily get to the service center in order to subsequently correct the camber and toe. And while driving, the car will not so obviously try to move to the side.
  4. Unscrew the bolts securing the strut and knuckle. First, we release the upper bolt paired with the eccentric washer, and then remove the lower fastener. Now the time has come to disconnect the strut from the trunnion. We proudly perform this action.
  5. Let's go back under the hood. We find three points (nuts). This is the attachment point for the shock-absorbing element to the body spar cup. The nuts are unscrewed evenly (one at a time, but by a small amount). This will prevent the rack from skewing. We support the shock-absorbing element itself from the inside of the wheel arch so as not to cause it to fall. The entire event is implemented using the key at “13”.
  6. Having achieved victory over the nuts, we solemnly remove the stand.
  7. We use ties for spring elements. The process of clamping the coil with these devices is carried out until the moment when the spring is released from the thrust between the cups of the rack and the support.
  8. After making sure that the spring is free, use a “22” key to unscrew the central nut of the rod.
  9. Now let's start disassembling the rack. We dismantle the support with its bearing, remove the upper metal cup and the damping element. All that remains is the boot and the spring itself.
  10. We inspect all parts for signs of wear or damage.

Removing the shock absorber strut and disassembling it

We remove and disassemble the shock absorber strut when it is necessary to replace the upper support, bearing, spring, and telescopic strut. The telescopic stand is non-removable and cannot be repaired. We carry out the work on an inspection ditch or overpass, but you can get by on a flat platform. There are two options for removing the shock absorber strut. The first allows you to avoid subsequent adjustment of the steering wheel alignment angles, the second method requires less work, but after it requires adjustment of the steering wheel alignment angles. We replace the telescopic stand according to the second option. In the first option, remove the strut together with the steering knuckle, without loosening the nuts of the upper (adjusting) and lower bolts securing the strut to the steering knuckle. At the same time, disconnect the tie rod end from the swing arm of the shock absorber strut (see below). We disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle (see “Removing the ball joint”). We remove the outer CV joint from the wheel hub (see “Removing the front wheel drives”), and also remove the pad guide with the caliper and cylinder (see “Replacing the front wheel brake disc”).

We tie the bracket to the brake hose bracket, making sure that the hose is not stretched. If the rack is supposed to be disassembled...

...using a 22mm spanner wrench, loosen the tightening of the rod nut, holding the rod from turning with a 6mm hexagon.

Using a socket or a 13mm wrench, unscrew the three nuts securing the upper strut support to the body...

...and remove the shock absorber strut along with the fist. To remove the shock absorber strut, use the second method to disconnect the tie rod end from the shock absorber strut swing arm. To do this, unscrew the nut securing the ball pin of the tie rod end.

We install an adjustable stop under the finger, press it and, striking the rotary lever with a hammer, press the finger out of the lever. Using a “22” spanner, loosen the tension of the rod nut, holding the rod from turning with a “6” hexagon, and with a “13” socket, unscrew the three nuts securing the upper support of the strut to the body (see above).

We remove the brake hose coupling from the shock absorber strut holder.

Use a chisel or paint to mark the location of the adjusting bolt relative to the rack. With this method, after assembly, the deviation of the wheel camber angle from the original value will be insignificant.

Using a 19mm socket, unscrew the nut of the upper bolt securing the strut to the steering knuckle, holding the bolt from turning with a 17mm wrench.

Remove the top bolt and eccentric washer from the steering knuckle.

Using a 19mm socket, unscrew the nut of the lower bolt securing the strut to the steering knuckle, holding the bolt from turning with a 17mm wrench.

Oil or gas-oil - the first question that needs to be resolved

If you take inexpensive racks that are made in Russia or China, then there are virtually no differences between oil and gas-oil. But when you buy products from a great brand, you can notice a very noticeable difference. In particular, gas-oil will be a very tough sports solution. Oil shock absorbers offer customers a number of specific advantages that will be important in the operation of vehicles:

  • quite high ride comfort, which can be called significant progress for the Lada Granta, overcoming most potholes without noticeable effects in the car interior;
  • low level of penetration, that is, you will not catch unpleasant sounds when the rack shows its long free stroke, there is no risk of breakage;
  • the rod stroke is quite long, it is possible to hang the wheels almost like an SUV, this helps on large bumps and dirt roads;
  • your Lada Granta will not only become softer, but will also be able to transmit information about the road more energy-intensively, there is no intrusive data, only the necessary details;
  • The cost of oil shock absorbers is often slightly lower than gas-oil shock absorbers, which is why the vast majority of domestic car owners buy them.

Of course, it all depends on the brand. You can buy an excellent Japanese version of the insert and get simply wonderful operating possibilities. There is the option of purchasing a cheap Chinese rack and being completely disappointed in its use. But for now, let's limit ourselves to making a decision on the type of shock absorber. It can be a soft oil or a sports gas-oil type.

Replacing stabilizer struts at home: servicing Granta correctly

The work of installing new struts on Grant is not difficult due to the absence of complications in the design of the chassis - you can replace components with new ones with your own hands and without specialized knowledge. The entire scope of work will require no more than 1.5 hours of time to replace each element, as well as the availability of sockets or wrenches, a jack and hexagonal Torx, which come with the car. To replace the racks you need:

First, prepare the vehicle for safe servicing, namely, park it on a level area and place wheel chocks under the wheels of a bridge that cannot be repaired. Next, squeeze the handbrake and engage any gear using the selector;

Note! After lifting the car with a jack, the car's suspension system will lose the force of dynamic tension, which will relax the struts to the maximum - the hand brake allows you to fix the suspension in a stable position and secure the repair procedure. Remember, without the handbrake on, it is quite difficult to pull the rack out of the raised position!

Upon completion of the preparation procedures, we lift the required part of the vehicle with a jack and dismantle the wheel and brake mechanism. For convenience, the brake mechanism does not need to be completely removed - just unscrew the upper fastenings and release the lower ones, then turn the structure to the side; Next, we get to the racks and clean all the dirt from the parts, after which we treat the fixation units with WD-40 liquid. Under no circumstances try to unscrew the oxidized nuts - the licked threads will force you to cut out the struts along with the fasteners, which will significantly increase the repair time and require disassembling the entire chassis; After the mount is loosened, carefully unscrew the fixing nuts and pull out the racks. If the springs are old and have sagged a lot, you can raise the suspension using a second jack - just install the device directly under the car's axle and lift the suspension. Now you can install a new rack, but before installation it is recommended to clean the entire suspension from traces of scale or deposits, and also treat it with a Motul-type anti-corrosion agent

When installing components, it is important to replace all damaged nuts, as well as pre-lubricate all fastening elements with any technical compound - this will significantly increase the service life of the new part; At the end of the maintenance procedure, we assemble the entire structure according to these instructions in the reverse order. The remaining stabilizer struts along the entire perimeter of the vehicle are changed in a similar way, regardless of the structural location of the bridge.

Replacing struts with your own hands does not require specialized skills and is carried out according to an intuitive scenario, which allows you to save a lot on car maintenance without losing the quality of the final result - it’s better to buy struts of higher quality than to overpay for such a simple operation!

Manufacturer is one of the most difficult questions for the buyer

Buying unusual, expensive shock absorbers is becoming a necessity today. In conditions of very tough competition and the global crisis in the automotive market, cheap companies are starting to produce worse and worse spare parts. Therefore, the products of some corporations have long ceased to be reliable and of high quality. It is worth highlighting the following brands as an ideal solution for Lada Granta when purchasing racks:

  • KYB - you can combine separate liners with a stock strut and you will get an almost full-fledged Kayaba, the shock absorbers are very durable and high quality;
  • Acomi is a fairly affordable brand, but much better than Chinese solutions, a completely acceptable solution if you choose an expensive series like Comfort PRO;
  • SS20 - the company makes special racks for the Granta, so they fit perfectly, quite adequate quality, but there are many fakes and a number of shortcomings in movement;
  • Demfi - not so durable, but quite affordable racks, which are also ideal for the Lada Granta, quite high-quality performance, but you need a choice;
  • Plaza is one of the cheapest options of more or less decent quality, but only some kits from the manufacturer are pleased with their reliability and durability.

So there are not many chances to choose from brands. Of course, you can try Monroe struts or buy some racing solutions from France and Germany. But this will be too expensive. The same as Kayaba, but this solution is classic, and is simply perfect for the Lada Granta. If you have enough money for a Japanese manufacturer, buy their offers for your car.

Operations for removing the front strut from a Lada Granta car

The work is shown using the example of the left pillar of a car. The right pillar is removed in the same way.

1. Brake the vehicle with the parking brake and install wheel chocks (“chocks”) under the rear wheels. Open the hood. Raise the front of the car with a jack and place it on secure supports. Remove the corresponding front wheel. Loosen the bolts securing the wheel while it is standing on the ground.2. If you remove the shock absorber strut for repair, then, holding the strut rod from turning with one key, use a second key to loosen the tension of the rod securing nut. In this case, the spring will minimally “bite” the mounting bolts connecting the steering knuckle and the shock absorber.

As a result, it will be easier for you to remove them from the holes.3. Remove the brake hose holder from the bracket on the shock absorber strut.

On a Lada Granta car equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), disconnect and remove the wheel speed sensor.

4. Disconnect the steering rod from the swing arm of the shock absorber strut “Replacing the outer tie rod end of a Lada Granta”

5. Place marks on the eccentric washer and shock absorber strut to indicate the position of the adjusting bolt relative to the strut. This will help approximately maintain wheel alignment when installing the strut.

6. Unscrew the nut of the adjusting (upper) bolt securing the shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle...

7. ...and remove the bolt from the hole along with the eccentric washer.

8. Unscrew the nut of the lower bolt securing the shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle and remove the bolt.

9. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the strut.

10. In the engine compartment, unscrew the three nuts of the upper fastening of the shock absorber strut to the body...

11. ...and remove the stand.

12. Install the shock absorber strut in the reverse order of removal

Pay attention to the position of the upper pillar support: the arrow marked on the surface of the support should be directed forward in the direction of vehicle travel. After installation, check and, if necessary, adjust the toe-in and camber of the wheels. Please note that after installing the rack back, you will need to make the “geometry” of the front wheels

If you are changing the strut spring and not repairing (replacing) the shock absorber, then the strut can be removed with the steering knuckle by disconnecting the assembly along the ball joint and CV joint splines. You will find more detailed information about this method of removing the strut in the article “Removing the strut from a VAZ 2110 car.”

Lada Granta MAGMA › Logbook › Replacement of the front suspension strut support (Granta norm). Part 1.

Good day, dear subscribers!

I recently changed my strut mounts. I would like to share with you the process of replacing supports. I will try to describe everything clearly and competently, so that each of you can replace the strut supports, as well as the front suspension shock absorbers or springs, without any problems, depending on what you need to replace. The process of replacing the above is exactly the same.)

So.
Let's figure out how this can be done. There are two ways to replace support bearings.
The first method
is simpler and faster.
It involves removing the strut without the steering knuckle. In this case, all you need to do is just unscrew the two alignment bolts with nuts securing the strut to the steering knuckle, unscrew the tie rod end nut and disconnect it, and unscrew the three nuts securing the strut support to the body. And after that, you can remove the stand. But after this process, it will be necessary to go to the alignment. At the service station, most likely, this is exactly what they will do to you. Afterwards you will need to fork out more money for the wheel alignment. The second method
is longer and more complex. Using this method, it is necessary to remove the strut assembly with the steering knuckle, the hub, the brake disc and the caliper bracket. The advantage of this method is that after this there will be no need to do a wheel alignment. I did exactly this, and the further description will be about this method. I would also like to note the following - This method is only relevant if you do not need to do a wheel alignment after repairing the front suspension. If you plan to do a wheel alignment after repairing the suspension in any case (for example, when replacing tie rod ends), then all this is unnecessary. In this case, use the first method.

Shock absorbers for Granta, which ones to choose?

When to change Lada Granta struts? The service life of the shock absorber strut depends on the operating conditions of the vehicle. Struts whose service life has come to an end are determined during diagnostics using a special stand, or in a simple, popular way, when they notice that the car has begun to hold the road poorly and is no longer as stable as before. You can also rock the corner of the car; if there is free swing more than 1-1.5 times, then the strut needs to be replaced. The approximate service life of shock absorbers is 60-100 thousand km. mileage

Which Grant stands are better? There is no consensus; each type of rack has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, oil shock absorbers are soft despite their low price, which makes the ride more comfortable. However, the small operating temperature range makes them tough in winter. Gas or gas-oil shock absorbers, as a rule, have a higher cost, but are considered more technologically advanced; the car becomes more stable.

What racks are on the Grant from the factory? AvtoVAZ installs SAAZ oil shock absorbers. Catalog numbers:

What is the approximate price of racks for Granta? Front — 2100 rub., rear — 1200 rub. It is worth considering that depending on the region, the cost of racks can vary greatly.

Have you decided to replace the racks? Be sure to check the condition of the remaining suspension elements; the trip will be comfortable and safe only if all components are in good working order.

Shock absorbers VAZ 2107

Despite the fact that the VAZ “Seven” is presented as a luxury version of the VAZ 2105, the design of the front and rear suspensions is no different from other classic models. This also applies to shock absorbers, which not all owners are satisfied with their performance.

Purpose and design

The main function that shock absorbers perform in a car’s suspension is to dampen vibrations and shocks that affect the body when driving over uneven surfaces. This part ensures reliable contact of the wheels with the road surface and maintains vehicle controllability regardless of the condition of the road surface. Structurally, the shock absorber consists of two elements - a piston and a cylinder. Depending on the type of damping device, chambers with oil and air or oil and gas are located inside the cylinder. The gas or oil medium exerts resistance during the movement of the piston, converting vibrations into thermal energy.

What are there

There are several types of shock absorbers:

  • oil;
  • gas;
  • gas-oil with constant hardness;
  • gas-oil with variable hardness.

Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Table: dimensions of the rear original dampers of the “seven”

vendor codeRod diameter, mmCase diameter, mmBody height (excluding stem), mmRod stroke, mm

Oily

The working medium in oil damping elements is oil. The advantage of such products comes down to a simple and reliable design. This type of damper can operate without problems for several years without affecting the vehicle's performance. The downside is the slow response. The fact is that when driving at high speeds, the damper simply does not have time to absorb irregularities and return to its original position, as a result of which the car begins to rock. Shock absorbers of this type are recommended for those motorists who drive at speeds no higher than 90 km/h.

Gas

Gas-type products are the toughest. The design, compared to oil damping elements, has two chambers: oil and gas, which uses compressed gas (nitrogen) under a pressure of 12–30 atm. Such shock absorbers are used in racing cars and on some SUVs.

Gas-oil with constant hardness

The design of this type of damper is two-pipe, i.e. there is an inner pipe in the outer pipe. The product has two pistons with valves and contains gas under a pressure of 4–8 atm. and oil. When the shock absorber rod is compressed, part of the oil remains in the inner tube and works like an oil damper, and part goes into the outer tube, causing the gas to be compressed. When compressed, the gas pushes out the oil, returning it to the inner tube. Due to this work, smoothness is ensured, leading to smoothing out shocks. Such shock absorbers are less rigid compared to gas ones, but not as soft as oil ones.

Gas-oil with variable hardness

On Zhiguli cars, dampers with variable stiffness are practically not used, which is due to the high cost of such products. Structurally, such elements have an electromagnetic valve that automatically adapts to the operating mode of the vehicle. During the adjustment process, the amount of gas in the main damper tube changes, resulting in a change in the rigidity of the mechanism.

Video: types of shock absorbers and their differences

Where are they located?

The shock absorbers of the rear suspension of the “seven” are installed near the wheels. The upper part of the damper is attached to the car body with a pin, and the lower part is fixed to the rear axle by means of a bracket.

Preparatory procedures

Many car owners are interested in which racks are best to install, as well as how to do everything correctly. Before you repair the front struts, you will need:

  1. We stop the LADA Granta car using the handbrake and place wheel chocks under the stern wheels.
  2. Under the hood we find a shock-absorbing support rod, into the hexagonal recess of which, located at the end, we insert a key of the corresponding profile.
  3. Using the second wrench, we loosen the tightening torque of the nut securing the suspension element to the body. In the meantime, we use a hex wrench to keep the rod from trying to turn in conjunction with the nut.
  4. We “dive” into the wheel arch of the LADA Granta and find a bracket that holds the brake hose on the strut body.
  5. We unscrew the specified fastening unit, removing the hose itself from the holding bracket. This will provide space for unscrewing the lower point of the shock absorber strut. You will have to work in tandem with a key “17” size.

You should dare to replace the struts in cases where a leak of working fluid from the shock absorber is detected, as well as if there is a knock, deformation of the rod or destruction of the silent block.

You should remember the rule that implies replacing the struts as a whole on one axis, even if the second shock-absorbing element is in good condition.

Installation of new front struts on Lada Priora

  1. Remove the mounting bolts from the wheel. Install the jack on the side where the repair will be carried out.
  2. Unscrew the bolts and remove the wheel.

  1. Disconnect the brake hoses. Remove them from the holder on the stand.

  1. Use pliers to unscrew the locking pin of the steering tip pin. Remove the nut using a “17” wrench.

  1. Install the puller onto the steering end. Press it out of the socket.

  1. Expand the support. Unscrew the steering knuckle mounting nuts.
  2. If necessary, you can use a hammer. It is important to avoid damage to the threads.
  3. The upper eccentric bolt is designed to adjust the camber. It has a washer on it that often sticks to the post. Do not throw away this bolt, as it will be reinstalled a little later. There is no point in remembering how the eccentric is located along the axis, since it will still be necessary to carry out wheel alignment.

  1. Using a “13” key, unscrew the fastening nuts securing the front pillar to the body. They are under the hood.

Analogs of rear shock absorbers on VAZ 2190 and 2191

The original rear ones are also slightly more expensive than the average price of replacements. Because of this, analogues are also in high demand. The best option would be to purchase rear shock absorber struts in packaging specifically from the manufacturer SAAZ (red box), and not the standard VAZ one (blue), which is true, analogues offer substitutes with slightly better rigidity characteristics and service life.

Which shock absorbers for Lada Granta should I choose? Many foreign analogues for the Lada Granta - VAZ 2190/2191 are superior to standard racks in a number of indicators, such as: rigidity, noise level, anti-corrosion coating, and the presence of reinforced mounting of silent blocks. But not all stands have such characteristics, especially if we are talking about a Chinese counterfeit.

The most popular manufacturer of racks among grant providers is SS20. The company specializes in producing racks specifically for Lada cars, including Grants. Therefore, there are no problems with installation, plus their price and quality are more acceptable, except in those rare cases when there are design flaws.

Of course, you can try to purchase Monroe or other spare parts made in Germany or France. But this will be too expensive an option.

Subtleties when installing a suspension element

  1. We begin to assemble the suspension element using the reverse dismantling process algorithm.
  2. Before direct installation, we recommend checking the shock absorber. To do this, you need to press the rod all the way and observe its behavior. If the pressing force is high, and the rod subsequently slowly (without delay) returns to the extended position. This indicates the serviceability of the element.
  3. A special mark, which the manufacturer kindly applied to the surface of the product, will help you install the front struts correctly. The direction of the mark should be oriented along the direction of the Lada Granta car.
  4. Having reached the correct location of the marks, feel free to assemble the shock-absorbing unit, following the well-known sequence of actions.

How to identify a faulty stabilizer link before it breaks on the highway

The average lifespan of stabilizer struts on a Lada Grant is 40-50,000 km, however, if budget segment components are installed or used on roads with insufficient surface quality, the replacement procedure may be required much earlier. The most pronounced signs of deterioration of stabilizer struts are the following factors:

  • When driving straight at low speed, the car wobbles its wheels;
  • When driving at low speed, the car spontaneously deviates from the set course;
  • There is a strong vibration load on the steering wheel or an increased consumption of power steering fluids is observed;
  • When driving near maximum speed, the vehicle's suspension begins to sway;
  • There are creaks or impacts in the area of the ball, strut or wheel of the car.

Remember, if these factors are present during operation of your car, it is necessary to diagnose the chassis. The best option would be to check at a service station, but the inspection procedure can also be carried out at home - all you need to do is:

  • Turn the car's steering wheel all the way and try to turn the wheel, holding the disc with your hands - the feeling of play when the wheel moves indicates that the base of the joint and the wheel hub are worn down. This factor reduces vehicle controllability;
  • Next, we try to rock the car by chronologically pressing on the wheel liner - successful completion indicates serious deterioration of the struts. In this case, it is prohibited to operate the car until the chassis is completely repaired;
  • Then we inspect the stabilizer struts for deformation - worn bushings or leaks of technical fluids also require prompt replacement of components.

By making it a rule to carry out a full diagnostic inspection every 10,000 km, you will completely protect yourself from accidental breakdowns or critical situations on the road, and will also increase the life of the vehicle as a whole. Remember, timely replacement of components will cost much less than emergency repair of the system after the fact.

Algorithm for self-replacement of rear struts of Lada Granta

A common reason for replacing a rear shock absorber is oil leakage from the cylinder, depressurization, loss of integrity, or seal defects. Less common spring sagging. Tools: open-end wrenches “17, 19”, a set of new struts, WD fluid – 40.

  • We fix the front wheels with wheel chocks and engage first gear;
  • We fold the back row of seats for ease of maintenance;
  • We pry off the rubber plug of the rear glass and remove it;
  • Unscrew the upper shock absorber fixing nut;
  • Jack up the rear wheel and remove it;
  • We hang the side of the car at such a height that the beam has free movement;
  • Unscrew the lower fastening, remove the eye from the seat;
  • Remove the shock absorber assembly;
  • Using a crab puller, compress the spring and remove the boot.

Replacing the Lada Grant strut with a new one, assembling the parts in the reverse order. When moving the rod in the upper position, it will be difficult to get into the hole; an assistant may be needed.

Replacing support bearings without removing the strut

  1. Jack up the car and remove the wheel;
  2. Using a crab puller, compress the spring several turns;
  3. In the engine compartment, unscrew the three nuts securing the support bowl to the glass;
  4. Unscrew the steering tip and unscrew the nut;
  5. Lower the shock absorber assembly down;
  6. We remove the support bowl and replace the Granta strut bearing.

The repair is completed by reassembling in the reverse order.

Grant strut spacer. For what. What is the price

In order to increase the service life of the glasses in the engine compartment and to prevent an increase in the angle of inclination of the pillars, the structure is reinforced with a metal beam. The ends are attached to support bowls and connected to each other by a metal pipe. This is the simplest design. Modernized versions have a different layout. But this is not for everyone.

The strut of the rear struts of the Grant is carried out by analogy with the front ones. The cost of the budget option is from 850 – 900 rubles. More complex designs from 1500 rubles. Everyone determines their effectiveness independently.

Repair, pumping of racks or replacement with new ones. Is there any reason

The difference in cost between replacement and partial repair is only 30 - 35%. If you have a very limited budget, then give Grant shock absorbers for pumping. If you have sufficient funds, buy new ones.

Reupholstering does not always give a positive result; sometimes the service life is several thousand kilometers.

Oil or gas-oil as a filler for racks

As in the previous case, start from the allocated budget for repairs. Obviously, the oil type is the cheapest, the least quality, with the shortest service life. Combined option: gas-oil - the most popular type of shock absorber filler. It has proven itself well on rough terrain, road potholes, bends, and ice. The cost of the kit is 17% more expensive than the oil equivalent.

Gas: high performance characteristics, long service life, versatility in use, wide range for any modification of the car. At the same time, the exorbitant cost is the main stumbling block for many owners, for whom the amount is unaffordable. Obviously, gas-oil ones are the optimal solution for most owners.

➤ Replacing front and rear struts on a Lada Grant

The suspension of the Lada Granta is represented by a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber strut, a spring, a bump stop, a silent block (for the rear row), a support bearing, and a bowl.

Taking into account the quality of the road surface and the peculiarities of climatic temperatures, the service life of suspension elements of domestic transport hardly exceeds the mark of 65 - 75 thousand km. Rare cases within 100,000 km are rather an exception.
