How to replace silent blocks of a VAZ 2106 with your own hands

On sale you can find two types of elements - polyurethane and rubber-based. The question is: which ones are better to use on the VAZ 2107? Rubber ones have many disadvantages:
- Even the new ones squeak.
- They have a relatively small resource.
- Under the influence of an aggressive environment they quickly become unusable.
But they also have a big plus - a fairly low price. Depending on the “appetites” of the seller, you can purchase a set for 500-700 rubles. But polyurethane ones have higher characteristics. They are practically not exposed to aggressive environments, have a long service life (at least twice as long), but there is one drawback - the price. It is within one and a half thousand. Look at how you are used to using your car.
Which ones should you install on your VAZ 2107? The question is not easy, you need to weigh everything to answer it. And most importantly, assess your financial capabilities. You also need to pay attention to your driving style. If it is aggressive, then polyurethane ones will be more suitable for the job. But if you drive quietly and the suspension is not subjected to significant loads, then you can install regular rubber ones. Replacing silent blocks of the lower arm

There was a case with one VAZ 2107 car. The owner did not monitor the condition of the suspension; for about ten years the car was not thoroughly repaired, but was only “killed”. The result is that the silent block on one side was broken so that the lever was held on the axis and its play was unacceptable. When I tried to remove the silent block, it simply did not budge, as the body was stuck.
The result - I had to warm it up over an open fire and only then, with the help of a hammer and some mother, was it possible to knock out the metal part of the silent block. A simple replacement turned into a difficult repair using fire. But all this driver needed to learn how to use a VAZ 2107 car. After all, it is much easier to change an element that has just begun to fail than one that has become stuck and rusted to the suspension arm.
Therefore, do not neglect, repair your car on time. We settled on the fact that there is no need to completely remove the lower arm. This is unreasonable, since it will require a lot of unnecessary operations. The main thing is to be able to use a puller and keys.
How to remove the lever will be discussed below. To work, you will need 19" keys, WD-40 fluid, and a special puller for silent blocks. You can also do without it, but it’s much more convenient with it. Treat all threaded connections with WD-40, then unscrew the nut on one side of the lever.
Place the puller on the silent block and, rotating it, pull the element into the light. A new one is installed immediately, using the same puller. It is with its help that the element is pressed into the lower suspension arm. You don't even have to use a puller. To do this, lubricate the seat with a small amount of Litol and install the silent block.
Pressing is done by hand until it is possible. Then put on the washer and start tightening the nut. Just try to perform this procedure carefully so that the silent block does not go awry. Pressing is considered complete when the metal part of the hinge is flush with the surface of the lever.
Replacing the upper arm joints
Here the situation is a little more complicated, since you will need to completely remove the lever. But this can be done in just a few minutes. It all depends on how well the WD-40 lubricant penetrates the threaded joint. Otherwise, there shouldn’t be any difficulties: use one wrench to hold the bolt from turning, and use the second to unscrew the nut. And after that, remove the upper arm. Please note that the nut that secures the silent block must be replaced with a new one . Replacing silent blocks is also accompanied by the installation of new nuts with thread lockers.
Purpose of silent blocks
Silent blocks are called hinges consisting of two or one metal bushings connected through a rubber insert. The part in question in the form of metal bushings serves to combine suspension units, and rubber materials serve as dampers of vibrations that occur when the machine moves, transmitted from one unit to another. Due to these small parts, the service life of the car suspension is extended, since all vibrations, deformations and vibrations are smoothed out using a silent block.
Replacement of rubber bushings of rear suspension links
The need to replace rubber hinges arises when they are damaged or worn out and require the removal of the longitudinal and transverse rods. The “six” rear suspension links are attached at one end to brackets installed on the floor of the car, and at the other end to brackets installed on the rear axle beam. To carry out repair work you will need 19mm wrenches. Dismantle the parts in this order:
- Remove the top (short) links. To do this, unscrew the nuts and knock out the bolts.
- Remove the long reaction rods. To dismantle them, you need to disconnect the lower hinge of the rear shock absorber and move it to the side. Then you need to unscrew the fastening nuts, remove the spring washers and bolts that secure the rods to the beam.
- To remove the transverse link, you need to unscrew the fastening of this element to the body bracket and rear beam and knock out the bolts.
All rubber joints that are used in the rear suspension links of the VAZ 2106 are similar to each other, although they differ in size. They are pressed into the eyelets of the rods with an interference fit, so to replace them you will need: special mandrels for installation, a brush, a solution of soap in water and a large bench vice. The work should be done like this:
Remove the metal spacer sleeve from the rubber joint using a vice and a mandrel, and then press the rubber joint itself out of the rod. Moisten the inside of the tie rod eye, the inside cavity, and the outside of the rubber joint with soapy water. Also wet the spacer sleeve. Using mandrels and a bench vice, first press the hinge into the rear link, and then the spacer sleeve into the rubber hinge itself. Similar repairs are carried out for all removed parts.
It is important not to confuse the rubber elements intended for short and long rods, so it is better to check the catalog numbers.
When repairing a car, you can do a little tuning of the rear suspension of the “sixth model”. To do this, the metal spacer bushings must be shortened by 2mm. With the help of such a simple improvement, you can increase the life of the articulated joint by 2-3 times, while the stability of the rear axle is significantly increased.

To begin, use a 24mm wrench to unscrew the nuts securing the lever. Next, if you have a puller, then use it to press out the silent blocks. If there is no special puller, then we simply take a mandrel with a diameter larger than the diameter of the silent block. We set the mandrel as shown in the photo and hit it with a hammer. At the same time, we rest the lever using a mounting tool or a crowbar, as in the photo. Thus, we remove the silent blocks in the lower arms.

How to remove stuck silent blocks in the lower front control arm.
Stuck silent blocks cause a lot of trouble when removing them. In order to get rid of them you need a gas torch and a hammer with a core. We burn out the rubber and tap the iron bushings on all sides. After that we try to knock them out using a core and a hammer.
If the nuts securing the lever shaft are not stuck, then it is better to completely remove the lever (this will make it easier to knock the bushings out of the shaft). New silent blocks are pressed into the lever until it stops. This can be done using a puller or a mandrel of a suitable diameter; you can use a head as a mandrel.
After installing the new levers, tighten the nuts and release the car onto the wheels. Only after this do we fully tighten the nuts.

Replacing lower products
To change the silent blocks on the lower arm, you should carry out the following steps:
- Raise the car. To do this, you can use a lift or a standard jack.
- Unscrew the wheel.
- Loosen the nuts on the lever axis at the bottom.
- Unscrew the fasteners from the anti-roll bar cushion.
- Return the vehicle to a level surface.
- Unscrew the fastening element for the pin on the lower support.
- Remove the stabilizer by knocking it out with a hammer or a special puller.
- Raise the car again on a lift or jack.
- Move the stabilizer through the mounting pin.
- Hook the required spring and remove it from the support cup.
- Unscrew the lower arm axle fasteners.
- Remove the lever itself after unscrewing the washers.
- If you need to completely replace the lower arm, then remove the ball joint at the bottom. It has three fasteners that must be unscrewed and removed. There is no need to do this to replace the hinges.
- Secure the lever using a vice. After this, you can remove the silent blocks using special pullers.
- Install new products and reassemble the entire assembly.
Removing the old lower hinge

The sequence for replacing the rubber-metal joint of the lower arm:
- Using a twenty-two millimeter wrench, we unscrew the fastening nut of the lower arm.
- We use a special puller and press the hinge out of the seat. This is where it came in handy that the steering tip had been removed in advance, since otherwise it would not have been possible to bring the puller to the silent block.
- After removing the damaged silent block, you need to clean and lubricate the axle and threads with oil. The seat is also checked for damage. You need to be prepared for the fact that the silent block will be very difficult to insert back. In this case, it may be necessary to center the lower arm axle and lug using a jack and pry bar.
- Using the prepared device, we press the silent block back into the seat. We fix the movable joints, and we can consider that the work is done.
- We reinstall the previously removed steering tips. At the same time, do not forget to pin them.
- Next, tighten the nuts of both the upper and lower suspension arms of the VAZ 2106. If you follow the technology, then you need to perform this process with four passengers and an additional load of forty kilograms, which is placed in the trunk.
- In the absence of the specified number of assistants, you can get by with one (its weight must be at least eighty kilograms). It will alternately occupy seats in the cabin corresponding to the axles of the VAZ 2106, on which the nuts are tightened.
The rubber-metal hinge of the lower and upper arms is replaced in a completely identical manner on the other wheels of the VAZ 2106. Do not forget that the final fixation of the axle nuts is carried out when all silent blocks have been replaced.

- On the reverse side of the rod, unscrew the fastening of the lower side of the shock absorber.
- Remove all fasteners and spacer sleeve.
- Move the shock absorber.
- Having approached the jet thrust fasteners, lubricate them and unscrew them.
- Take a mounting spatula and use it to remove the jet thrust.
- The rubber bushings can only be removed if the cage is knocked out of the metal. In this case, you need to apply a special instruction.
- You can try to squeeze out or knock out the rubber elements that remain in the traction.
- Clean the cage thoroughly before installing new bushings.
- Lubricate the new product with liquid and drive or press in with a hammer.
- Take a special cone and install a metal sleeve. If it is not available, you can make it yourself by grinding off the head of the bolt.
- Press in the bushing with the cone.
- To completely remove the bolt, use a sleeve.
How to remove silent blocks without a puller

It is noteworthy that the hinges are those elements that cannot be repaired. Therefore, it is clear that when they fail, old products need to be removed and thrown away, and new ones installed in their place. Before performing any actions to change the hinge block, you should prepare the following devices and tools:
- special pullers for hinges and ball joints;
- set of wrenches. Typically needed for 22, 24 and 13 mm;
- chisel and hammer;

- The lever is fixed in a vice and, by tightening the puller bolt, the hinge is squeezed out of its seat.
- The second hinge is pressed out in the same way.
- Using the same puller, press in new parts and install the upper arm in place. To do this, repeat the steps in reverse order.
- Worn parts on the second lever are changed in the same way.
Replacing the silent blocks of the lower arms
Replace the rubber-metal joints on the lower arms in a similar way. Only in this case the latter are not removed from the car.
- Remove the desired wheel.
- Using a 22mm wrench, unscrew the axle nuts on both sides of the lever and remove the thrust washers.
- Screw the hollow bolt of the puller onto the axle. Then you need to tighten the nut, holding the bolt from turning. The puller glass will put pressure on the lower arm, gradually moving it away from the hinge.
- Insert the new hinge into place and center it in the hole, pressing the lever with a mounting blade. Then, installing the puller stop on the inside of the last one, press it in.
- Similar operations are carried out with the remaining silent blocks, after which all the removed parts are returned to their places.
Replacement of silent blocks of rear suspension torque rods
In order to replace worn silent blocks on VAZ-2106 thrust rods, you must:
- Place the car on a viewing hole or overpass.
- Remove all jet rods in the following order:
- long transverse rod;
- long pull to the right;
- left long pull;
- short left pull;
- right short pull.
- The rubber-metal joints of the torque rods are changed using procedures that are similar to those given above when describing the replacement of the silent blocks of the VAZ-2106 front suspension.

Homemade silent block remover
It is convenient to change the rubber-metal elements of the front suspension using a puller. However, not everyone has it. Therefore, you have to make the device yourself, since it is quite difficult to dismantle the hinges with improvised tools. Let's take a closer look at how and from what materials a puller can be made.
To work you will need the following list of parts and tools:
- a piece of water pipe 3 cm long with an internal diameter of 40 mm and an external diameter of 50 mm;
- washer with an outer diameter of at least 50 mm;
- M12 bolt 7 cm long with washers;
- two pieces of pipe 10 cm long and 40 mm in diameter;
- vice;
- hammer;
- lubricant
We manufacture the puller in the following sequence:
- Using a hammer, we rivet a part of the pipe with a diameter of 40 mm, increasing it to 45 mm.
To avoid troubles when driving a car, it is necessary to periodically inspect the condition of the suspension elements and promptly change not only silent blocks, but also other parts that have failed.
