Adjustment or how to set timing marks on a VAZ 2106 yourself

Decoding notes

Without pre-basing the pistons and valves, installing the timing chain on the VAZ 2106 according to the marks is impossible. Therefore, the significance of the marks is not at all conditionally decorative. The signs give an understanding of the position of parts inside the motor:

For your information. The numbering of the “pots” starts from the radiator side.

How to restore tag matches

When the chain is pulled out, the marks will go away. The main difficulty is to return them to a position of mutual coincidence. This work is combined with dismantling the old chain. However, there is no need to rush to remove it - misalignment of all factory markers is fraught with danger.

The base is the position of the crankshaft at which the pulley mark coincides with the long line on the front cover. In this case, the drilling hole for the camshaft star should be closer to the high tide. This must be achieved first. It is worth remembering that the transmission is made with a 2:1 ratio - two revolutions of the crankshaft correspond to one revolution of the camshaft.

Unnecessary fears when dismantling the RV sprocket are not appropriate. The shaft design includes a pin. In addition to transmitting torque, it serves as a fixator of a certain position.

How to put on a chain

Installation of a new chain begins with its attachment to a new crankshaft sprocket. Next, the damper, tensioner shoe, and limiter are mounted. The chain is passed through the drive shaft gear and secured along the way. Afterwards it is mounted on the camshaft sprocket, and its position is adjusted according to the cycle:

The final procedure is to tighten the chain, during which the tensioner is twisted all the way with good force. After rotating the HF key, the final check of the coincidence of the signs is carried out.

If, with a working chain tensioner and its shoe, as well as with unworn drive sprockets, it is not possible to restore the chain tension, it means that the chain is overextended and needs to be replaced. To replace the camshaft drive chain on a VAZ 2106, you will need: keys “10”, “13”, “17”, a special wrench for the crankshaft pulley nut (or a “36” head), a screwdriver, a mounting blade, a hammer , beard. 1. Remove the cylinder head cover (see “Checking and setting the valve timing by marks”).

2. While turning the crankshaft, align the mark on the camshaft sprocket with the mark (boss) on the camshaft bearing housing.

3. Unbend the lock washer tabs of the camshaft sprocket bolt. 4. To secure the engine shafts from turning, engage IV or V gear in the gearbox and brake the VAZ 2106 with the handbrake. If you are working in a ditch, place chocks under the wheels.

5. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt without unscrewing it. 6. Remove the chain guide (see “Replacing the camshaft drive chain guide”). 7. Remove the chain tensioner shoe (see “Replacing the camshaft drive chain tensioner shoe”).

8. Unscrew the stop pin and remove it.

9. Unbend the tabs of the lock washer on the auxiliary drive shaft sprocket bolt.

Using a pry bar, slide the sprocket and remove it. WARNING After removing the sprocket from the accessory drive shaft, do not rotate the shaft, as this will disrupt the initial ignition setting and the engine will not be able to start without reinstalling the ignition distributor.

11. Using a spudger, slide the sprocket and remove it. WARNING After removing the sprocket from the accessory drive shaft, do not rotate the shaft, as this will disrupt the initial ignition setting and the engine will not be able to start without reinstalling the ignition distributor.

12. Unscrew the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt and, lifting the chain, remove the sprocket. 13. Carefully lower the chain down and remove it without removing the crankshaft sprocket. USEFUL TIPS

After removing the chain, check the alignment of the marks on the camshaft sprocket and the cylinder block. If the marks do not match, turn the crankshaft until they align.

This is how the mark is located (shown by an arrowa) on the outside of the sprocket. Before installation, lubricate the new chain with engine oil.

14. Place the new chain on the crankshaft sprocket.

15. Place the chain on the accessory drive shaft sprocket.

16. Place the sprocket and chain on the roller, tensioning the leading branch of the chain, and tighten the fastening bolt without tightening it.

17. Hook the chain from above with a wire hook and...

18. ...lift it up to the camshaft.

19. Place the chain on the camshaft sprocket and the sprocket on the shaft, ensuring that the marks on the sprocket and the bearing housing match and tension the drive branch of the chain. 20. Tighten the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt without tightening it. 21. Install the chain guide in the reverse order of removal. 22. Install the chain tensioner shoe in the reverse order of removal. 23. Install the tensioner in the reverse order of removal. Loosen the cap nut. 24. Install the stop pin in the reverse order of removal. 25. Turn off the gear, turn the crankshaft 2-3 turns in the direction of rotation. 26. Make sure that the marks on the sprockets coincide with the marks on the engine. If the marks do not match, reinstall the chain. 27. If the marks match, tighten the tensioner cap nut, engage the gear, tighten the sprocket bolts and lock them. 28. Install the removed parts in the reverse order of removal. 29. Check and, if necessary, adjust the initial ignition timing.

Briefly about the main thing

The technology for setting timing marks on a VAZ 2106 engine is performed with the chain removed. A sprocket mounted on the camshaft without a chain is fixed with a screwdriver and tightened with a wrench. After rotating the camshaft in the desired direction and combining the drilling with the boss on the bed, the gear is again immobilized with a suitable object and dismantled. Next, the new chain is installed.

Perfect alignment of the marks can only be achieved by using a split gear. However, this is not at all necessary to comply with. It is quite possible that the camshaft marks coincide and the crankshaft pulley moves a little forward.

Good afternoon everyone. I recently lost both keys in my timing gears. The defect showed that the timing gear, sitting on the crankshaft, is removed and put on it by hand. Because I have access to factory machines, I decided to make gears based on the old ones, but I need to return the interference fit. I measured the dimensions: front end of the crankshaft 29.7 mm; internal diameter of the gear is 30.1 mm. The question is, what size should I make the inner diameter of the new gear so that there is an interference fit? Maybe someone will have a picture, drawing or photo with the dimensions of the timing gear key on the crankshaft? Thanks in advance.

I need the same troublesome photo please.

I measured it with a tape measure.

Timing chain VAZ 2106: characteristics

As you know, various engine modifications were installed on the sixes. Their main difference is the working volume, therefore, there will be differences in the little things. In particular, timing chains have different lengths and numbers of teeth. Look at the table:

EngineNumber of timing chain linksChain length
VAZ 2101, 05, 011114
VAZ 2103-2106116495.4..495.8 mm

When purchasing a new chain, be sure to check that it is suitable for your specific engine. Take the new timing chain and look at its outer links. If they are equally located, then the chain has 116 links, if differently, then 114. As you can see, there is no point in counting each link and measuring the length of the new chain. For clarification, take a look at the photo:

Please note that as the vehicle is used, the chain length increases. This is especially noticeable when it has served more than 100 thousand km. In fact, this is not stretching, but the appearance of backlash in the joints of the links - the hinges are destroyed and the total length of the VAZ 2106 timing chain increases. It should be noted that when the length increases to 499.5 mm, the chain must be replaced. This is the maximum size, after that it may simply tear.

Let's say you have several chains, and you are absolutely sure that one is new, and the rest have already been used. But you don’t know which one is new. What to do? Hold it flat as shown in the picture. The sagging of the new one should not be more than 10 mm. If it was used, then this characteristic will be twice as large. In the same case, if it is necessary to assess the condition of the chain without removing it, it is necessary:

If it is not possible to combine all these marks - for example, the first step has been completed, but the mark on the crankshaft pulley is 10 millimeters from the mark, or more, then the chain has become unusable and needs to be replaced. And, of course, if damage appears - cracks, chips - on the timing chain, it must be completely replaced.

Engines E1, EZ, E5

In principle, the cylinder head of E engines has the same design as other gasoline engines. The following text will only point out the differences.

Removal

Installation

  1. Install and screw the chain tensioner with a new gasket.
  2. After installing the tensioner, the bracket is loosened by rotation of the crankshaft. The clutch moves automatically and sets the chain play.
  3. Check the drive chain adjustment. To do this, rotate the crankshaft so that the mark on the belt pulley coincides with the “T” mark. At the same time, the rocker arms of the 1st cylinder should have a slight play, and the rocker arms of the 4th cylinder should be in the valve overlap position, i.e. both valves should be pressed down with the rocker arms. If this is not the case, the drive chain must be adjusted again.
  1. Install the cylinder head cover with a new cover gasket and segment seal. Screw the cover with a force of 10 Nm.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable.
  2. If available, set the time on the clock and set the security code for the radio.
  3. Check the valve clearance, see Section Checking/adjusting valve clearance.

Adjusting the Drive Chain

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  1. Block the crankshaft and unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolt (the engine is shown in the removed position).
  1. To block the crankshaft, engage 5th or 4th gear and ask an assistant to depress the brake pedal.
  2. Remove the chain tensioner.
  3. Remove the V-belt, see Section Removing and installing/tensioning the V-belt.
  4. Raise the car.
  5. Block the crankshaft and unscrew the crankshaft belt pulley bolt.
  6. Remove all oil pan bolts that are screwed into the drive chain cover.
  7. Unscrew the chain cover.
  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the key groove faces upward. At the same time, the polished (shiny) chain links should align with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. If the marks do not match, remove the sprocket from the camshaft and adjust the chain.
  1. If the chain is adjusted correctly, install the camshaft sprocket, timing chain housing, cylinder head cover, crankshaft belt pulley and oil pan mounting bolts.

What happens if the chain length increases?

It will not be possible to adjust the idle speed of the VAZ 2106 engine; its operation will be uneven and unstable. You can double-check all components, including power and ignition systems, a hundred times, set valve clearances, measure compression, but problems cannot be eliminated.

Please note that in the timing chain, all links have different wear, therefore, the valve timing is constantly changing.

There is also noise from the chain, as its links fall into the sprocket. It is also possible that the damper, limiting pin or corner of the shoe may break. But the worst thing is the timing chain jumping several teeth. Typically from 1 to 5.

Even if it slips a couple of teeth, the most favorable outcome is to stop the engine. And the saddest thing is the bending of the valves. For this reason, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the VAZ 2106 timing chain and promptly replace and tension it.
