Replacing the pump (water pump) on a VAZ 2121 NIVA with your own hands, injector, carburetor, how to change the view

Purpose of the pump

The power unit of any car and its components become very hot during operation. More than others, this concerns the combustion chamber, cylinder head and piston group. To maintain an operating temperature of about 90°C, the engine design provides a cooling system. As part of this system, a pump (water pump) circulates antifreeze through the cooling jacket of the engine, thereby reducing its temperature to operating levels.

The water pump has a simple device

If the water pump fails and forced circulation stops, the engine will overheat. Aluminum pistons will expand inside the steel liners and will initially severely scratch the ground walls. In the worst case scenario, the pistons will jam, causing the connecting rods to bend, and the engine will have to be overhauled.

The VAZ 2121 pump is a separate unit consisting of a housing on a flange with a shaft installed inside. On the shaft there is an impeller for pumping coolant (coolant) and a mounting mount for the pulley. The shaft rotates on two bearings, protected from the inside by a seal that prevents coolant leakage.

In a VAZ 2121 car, the water pump is located on the front of the engine above the crankshaft and generator pulleys. It is not attached to the cylinder block directly, but through an additional housing. Most often, the shaft with the impeller fails and must be replaced, but the housing remains in place.

The water pump shaft is rotated by the alternator belt

Troubleshooting

The main reason for water pump failure is severe wear of the bearings. Oil seal leakage is also a consequence of worn bearings. Cases when the oil seal began to leak coolant on its own are very rare.

The symptoms of these malfunctions are as follows.

  1. A suspicious noise is heard in the belt drive area, the intensity of which depends on the degree of wear of the bearings. In the early stages it manifests itself in the form of a hum, and then turns into knocking and grinding. The generator shaft can also make similar sounds - therefore, in this case, additional checking is required.
  2. There is play on the water pump shaft. You can determine it by shaking the shaft with your hand.

The shaft play is felt when the pulley is rocked by hand.

If the bearings are severely worn, the shaft may break into two parts.

If pump problems are not detected in time and the consequences described in paragraph 4 occur, the engine instantly overheats and the coolant quickly leaves the system. In such a case, immediately turn off the engine.

Diagnosing a faulty water pump is quite simple. It is necessary to open the hood and inspect the space around the pulley. If traces of liquid are found, you need to make sure that it is antifreeze and not oil. Then, in order to detect play, you should rock the pump pulley by hand. It should be taken into account that play can occur without coolant leakage through the oil seal. With a small (1–2 mm) play you can drive from 1 to 3 thousand km. After this, repair or replacement of the pump is necessary.

Replacing the water pump

The process of replacing the pump on a VAZ 2121 car of various modifications consists of the following steps.

  1. Purchasing a new pump.
  2. Preparation of tools and workplace.
  3. Disassembling the unit and dismantling the old pump.
  4. Installing a new pump and checking its functionality.

The specified sequence of work may change. If you are not completely sure that the pump will fail (perhaps the antifreeze is leaking due to wear on the gasket), you should buy a new pump only after dismantling and diagnosing the old one.

Pump selection

In addition to the standard product from AvtoVAZ, the following pumps are installed on the VAZ 2121 car:

The listed brands offer pumps with plastic and cast iron impellers. Despite the prejudice of car enthusiasts towards plastic products, it is better to choose plastic - the material is durable, lightweight and does not corrode. You should pay attention to the dimensions of the impeller so as not to buy a fake or an old-style product, the efficiency of which is much lower.

When purchasing, carefully study the packaging and trademarks made on the elements of the unit by casting, embossing or laser engraving. The paper seal sealing the lid of the package must contain a barcode and part number 2123–1307011–75.

The original pump can be identified by the manufacturer's marks on the body

On VAZ 21213-21214 cars you can install a pump with catalog number 2107-1307011-75 from classic VAZ models. However, the standard Niva pump has a reinforced design, so such a pump will last noticeably less, and it can only be installed in extreme cases.

If the impeller breaks or otherwise damages the housing, it will also have to be replaced. Pumps are available for sale as individual pumps or as a set with a housing. The pumps for carburetor and injection engine options are absolutely identical.

Required Tools

If there is a metal engine protection installed under the bottom of the car that blocks access to the lower bolt of the generator, it will have to be removed. This will require an inspection hole or overpass. Otherwise, you can reach the bolt without a hole - thanks to the high ground clearance of the car.

To remove the alternator belt, you need to loosen the nut that secures it.

To replace the VAZ 2121 pump you will need:

  • flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • mount with a spade-shaped end;
  • standard sets of spanner wrenches and sockets with a wrench equipped with a ratchet;
  • a short hose and a container for draining antifreeze (a basin or a plastic canister with a cut off side);
  • rags, gloves;
  • high temperature sealant;
  • liter container with antifreeze antifreeze.

To replace the pump you will need a standard set of tools, protective gloves and a liter canister of antifreeze

When draining antifreeze from the system, some of the liquid will spill. Therefore, you should purchase a liter coolant container in advance for topping up.

Work order

If access to the lower bolt of the generator is blocked by the engine protection, it must be removed on an overpass or inspection pit. Then you should loosen the nut on the generator mounting bolt without unscrewing it completely. In addition, on the VAZ 21214 injection model, you need to dismantle the air duct connecting the receiver to the plastic air filter box.

On the VAZ 21214 injection model, the air duct connecting the receiver to the plastic air filter box is dismantled

Antifreeze drain

The coolant is drained in the following order.

    Place a container under the vehicle opposite the drain plug in the form of a bolt located on the left side of the cylinder block next to the oil pressure sensor.

To drain the antifreeze from the cylinder block, unscrew the bolt plug.

The cap on the upper left side of the radiator opens, and antifreeze flows faster

To remove the pump, you should not empty the entire system - drain the antifreeze from the block, expansion tank and radiator, unless you plan to replace the fluid with a new one. It is important to lower its level in the water jacket of the motor below the height where the pump is located.

Dismantling the pump

The procedure for dismantling the pump is the same for all modifications of the Niva.

  1. With the belt tense, use a 13mm wrench to loosen the three bolts securing the pump pulley.
  2. Using a 17mm wrench, loosen the nut on the tension bracket and move the generator housing to the right, towards the crankshaft. A loose generator drive belt can be easily removed from the pulleys.

The pump itself

The pump is made very beautifully. Casting LUZAR LVP-0101. The exterior is made quite well, evenly and smoothly, finished to a mirror shine. Out of 5 identical pumps, only one had no play. Some of these pumps had minor casting defects. The seal works tight, and the bearing is awesome.

The cover on the new pump is different from the cover on the old one, and therefore the question arises: is it a fake, or a new sample of covers. Probably both of them are original, just made at different times.

After a couple of thousand kilometers it will be possible to check how this Luzar pump will behave.

There are inscriptions on the pump that are burned with a laser. The inscription VR1630173 at the top and LVP at the bottom. It is not known what this means, but there are such inscriptions.

The stud that comes with the LUZAR cover is meaningless, because if you screw it on, then between the nut and the body you get a gap equal to or even slightly thicker than the frame itself, to which the cover on which the generator is screwed is attached. Therefore, it is best to take a bolt and screw it, fully threaded, to the head. It will turn out tight and good.

Forced engine cooling

Some car owners believe that constant forced cooling of the VAZ 21214 engine with a mechanical fan copes better with cooling than an electronic system with a temperature sensor. To do this, an impeller with six blades is installed on the pump, as on old VAZ models.

Forced cooling is provided by a mechanical fan attached to the pump

Installation of a mechanical fan is carried out as follows.

  1. Disconnect the power connector for the electric fan. Using a 10 mm wrench, unscrew the bolts and remove the fan from the radiator along with the diffuser.
  2. Remove the generator drive belt and pump pulley.
  3. Replace the three short pulley mounting bolts with long ones by screwing in the spacer nuts. Using these bolts, secure the impeller along with the pulley to the pump shaft.

The impeller is secured with long bolts through spacers in the form of nuts or plates

The nuts are installed to ensure that the blades of the new fan do not touch the power steering pulley on the crankshaft. If the nuts are not thick enough, you can place a metal plate or file each blade.

If the blades touch the pulley, they must be trimmed

A fan on the pump is not the best solution, although it may be useful in certain operating conditions. The reason is the load on the pump bearings, leading to accelerated wear. In normal mode, the unit lasts 40-60 thousand km, but with an impeller this mileage can be significantly reduced.

Replacing the pump on a VAZ 2121 Niva SUV yourself is not very difficult. Since it is unacceptable to drive with a faulty cooling system, the pump should be replaced at an early stage of wear. This is especially true for an all-wheel drive vehicle - even a minor problem can cause a rapid increase in engine temperature.

A pump is used to circulate fluid in the cooling system. Despite the high reliability of the unit, the part may fail. The water pump cannot be repaired and must be replaced as an assembly. To do this, you don’t have to be a car mechanic or have a large set of tools.

Why do you need a pump in a car?

The cooling system of any car consists of a number of elements and coolant. One of the main parts is the water pump, called a water pump. The element is designed to circulate fluid through the system, resulting in heat being removed from the cylinder head and the cylinder block itself. The pump is not assigned any more functions, but the performance of the motor directly depends on it. If the water pump fails, the power unit will quickly overheat.

The most common pumps are centrifugal type, due to their design features. The part is driven from the engine crankshaft via a belt. The liquid circulates through the cooling system due to the impeller, which is located in the pump cover.

The main part of the pump is located on the outside of the engine, and the impeller is located inside the system. The operation of the pump is quite simple: with the help of a belt, the part from the crankshaft rotates, driving a gear or pulley rigidly fixed to the axis. An impeller is installed on the opposite side of the axis, which also begins to rotate. It is in constant contact with the coolant. When the engine is running, centrifugal force is created, which causes fluid to move through the system.

A pump for a car is necessary to circulate coolant through the engine cooling system and prevent it from quickly overheating

When is a pump replacement necessary?

Despite the simplicity of the design of the water pump and its high reliability, the unit is constantly in operation and malfunctions may occur with it, which are better known in advance. The weak points in the element under consideration are the oil seal and bearing. When the bearing wears out, play and noise appear, which damages the seal.

There are a number of signs that indicate the pump is worn out and needs to be replaced:

  • coolant is leaking in the water pump area;
  • when the power unit operates, extraneous noise appears;
  • When the engine is running, play is visually observed.

The listed signs indicate wear of the bearing and oil seal. There are other less common causes of water pump failure. These include: damage to the impeller, the appearance of cracks on the body of the part, wear of the pulley or gear.

It is worth noting that the pump cannot be repaired, but replaced as an assembly, since the design is non-separable: all its elements are pressed into the body. When replacing a water pump, the gasket must also be changed.

The main reasons for replacing a pump are leakage, bearing noise and play.

Replacing a pump on a Niva

On a VAZ 2121 car, the coolant pump is located in the front of the cylinder block on the right side and its dismantling does not cause any difficulties even for beginners.

Replacement Tools

To replace the pump, you will need the following list of tools:

  • head and ratchet wrench or socket wrench 13;
  • head at 17;
  • liquid drain tube of suitable diameter.

During the dismantling process, another tool may be required, for example, a hammer, a screwdriver, depending on the current situation.

To dismantle the pump, you will need a list of tools, which will depend on whether only the pump or the pump is being removed along with the housing

Draining the coolant and replacing the pump

Before you begin, you will need to drain the liquid (water, antifreeze) from the engine cooling system. To do this, you need to place a suitable container on the left side of the engine and, using a key, unscrew the bolt to 13, attach the tube to the drain hole and remove the plug from the radiator neck. Then you can proceed directly to dismantling the pump.

    Using a 13 mm wrench or socket, unscrew the three fan bolts. They are also the mount for the pump pulley.

To remove the fan, you will need to use a 13mm socket to unscrew the three bolts securing the impeller and coolant pump pulley

To access the pump, you need to remove the tension bar of the generator using a 17 mm socket.

Using a 13 socket, you need to unscrew the four nuts securing the pump

After unscrewing the nuts, remove the pump from the housing, not forgetting to remove the gasket

There are situations when the pump has to be replaced along with the housing. In this case, you will need to unscrew the two 10mm nuts securing the fluid supply tube to the pump using a spanner wrench or ratchet.

In some cases, it is necessary to replace the pump along with the housing, which is due to the impossibility of repairing it

After which the tube is carefully pulled back. Next, unscrew three 13mm bolts: one on top and two on bottom. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp of the pipe going from the thermostat to the pump, after which it pulls off. Next, the pump along with the housing is removed from the engine.

After replacing the part, do not forget to fill the cooling system with liquid to the required level. 10.7 liters are poured into the cooling system of the Niva car together with the interior heating system. coolant.

Replacing the pump on Niva 21213 with your own hands

There are no fundamental differences in replacing the coolant pump on a VAZ 21213 compared to a VAZ 2121. The difference is that on more modern cars the fan is covered with a special protective cover. To dismantle it, you will need a spanner wrench and a 10mm socket. Use the wrench to unscrew the two nuts that connect the parts of the casing, after which the lower casing is removed. The upper part of the casing is secured with a 10mm head bolt.

Replacing a Niva pump: Necessary tools

When carrying out repairs and replacing this element yourself, we will acquire the following set of tools:

  • Socket heads; You will need a tool size 10 and 13.
  • Collar.
  • Ratchet.
  • Extension cords.
  • Crosshead screwdriver.

We first remove the generator: after dismantling the pump, antifreeze will flow, and the liquid will fall directly into this part, which will lead to damage and the need for replacement/cleaning. The fan itself on the Niva is located inconveniently; to dismantle it, we insert a ratchet between the flange and the radiator itself. You will need to unscrew the bolts that secure the coolant supply pipe, after which we move it back. Do not yank the product under any circumstances: this element is quite easily damaged.

Then we unscrew the bolt that secures the pump at the top. We also use a ratchet for this.

Two more bolts are located at the bottom; they are also unscrewed with a 13 key.

After this, we use a Phillips screwdriver: you will need to loosen the clamp fastening of the pipe connected to the thermostat and remove the hose.

After removing the pipes, we find out what kind of damage happened to the part. More often the impeller fails, but the device body may also be broken. In the latter case, we will see antifreeze leaking through the crack formed; If the hole is large, balls from a damaged bearing may fall through it.

We also note that the gasket installed between the housing and the pump block must be purchased separately: it may not be included in the kit. Most often, the sealing gasket also requires replacement, starting to leak. We assemble and install in the reverse order, installing the generator as the last one, i.e. after connecting the pipes and filling the system with cooling liquid. Before pouring antifreeze, you will need to remove the pipe from the carburetor: if you do not do this, the antifreeze will not be able to be poured into the system, since it will have nowhere to go.

After replacing and fixing the bolts, we start the car, letting the engine warm up, after a minute we turn it off and check for leaks where the new element is installed. If the part is installed correctly, there should be no traces of antifreeze.

The replacement procedure takes approximately 20 minutes; if you have no experience, you can do it in 30-40 minutes. The cost of the pump depends on the type and the store where you will buy the part: prices vary on average from 1100 to 1500 rubles.

What pumps are installed on carburetor and injection Nivas?

Although the good old Nivas are in many ways similar to the new fuel-injected cars, there are differences, including in the water pumps. The part is produced for different modifications of the car in question. For example, pump 21230–1307011–82 can be installed on all Nivas, but in some cases a spare part for 2107, which has a wider impeller, can be used.

When buying a pump, you need to be careful and make sure that the housing fits the impeller. Otherwise, installation difficulties will arise. To avoid mistakes, you can purchase a complete pump, i.e. cover and housing.

Although the classic pump is suitable for the injection Niva, the part may simply not cope with the high temperature and will need to be replaced sooner. The following types of parts exist:

  • a standard pump with a plastic impeller, the blades of which are located lower and have an elongated shape;
  • a new type pump, also equipped with a plastic impeller with longer blades;
  • HEPU water pump, which has a cast iron impeller.

The last option is considered the most reliable, since the impeller, made of plastic, simply melts and deforms at high temperatures, as a result of which the element can break off the axis and the pump jams. The advantage of spare parts with a plastic impeller is their reasonable price and availability.

The HEPU pump is considered the most reliable option for Niva cars, since the impeller is made of cast iron

How to install a fan on a VAZ 21214 pump

Some VAZ 21214 owners are faced with a situation where the standard electric fans of the radiator cooling system do not cope with their task. Usually the problem manifests itself in summer in city traffic jams. In this case, you have to think about installing a fan on the pump, like on the VAZ 2121, but you won’t be able to just pick it up and install it. The fact is that the propeller touches the power steering pulley. The problem is solved by installing a spacer in the form of washers between the fan and the pump pulley.

To prevent the fan blades from clinging to the hydraulic booster, you can grind them down a little or install spacers in the form of washers

Some motorists resort to more drastic measures, grinding down the edge of the propeller blade by 2-3 mm using a file.

To install the fan on the VAZ 21214 pump, you need to sharpen the blades a little so that they do not cling to the hydraulic booster

As a result of the described modifications, the engine warms up in almost the same way as with electric fans, but when the temperature reaches +80˚С, then it rises very slowly.

After some modifications, the radiator forced cooling fan takes its place and its operation is not satisfactory.

Even a novice car enthusiast can replace the water pump. The main thing is to take your time and carry out the process in the described sequence, not forgetting to replace the gasket and fill in coolant to the required level at the end of the work.

A pump is used to circulate fluid in the cooling system. Despite the high reliability of the unit, the part may fail. The water pump cannot be repaired and must be replaced as an assembly. To do this, you don’t have to be a car mechanic or have a large set of tools.

How to check the pump for serviceability?

To understand whether the breakdown really relates to the water pump, we will carry out the following steps:

    Check the pulley for play. It is enough to rock it from side to side: a strong deviation indicates problems with the pump. Inspect the drainage hole. If we look at the cut, if the pump breaks down we will see drops of antifreeze around the edges or a strong leak. This symptom often indicates damage to the pump housing. Checking the condition of the tension rollers in the timing system. If there is difficulty in the movement of the bearings, we can talk about a pump malfunction. If the Niva's additional pump is damaged, a malfunction signal may be problems with the element's electric drive.

  • a standard pump with a plastic impeller, the blades of which are located lower and have an elongated shape;
  • a new type pump, also equipped with a plastic impeller with longer blades;

How to choose a pump for Niva?

Water pumps are available for different modifications of this car; Thus, pump 21230-1307011-82 is suitable for all types, but in some cases the 2107 model with a wider impeller is used. When purchasing, it is important to ensure that the housing matches the impeller, otherwise it will be difficult to install the element. To avoid mistakes, you can buy the product assembled. If the Niva engine is fuel-injected, the classic pump may not cope with the high temperature, and the part will have to be replaced earlier. We recommend that you pay attention to the types of spare parts:

    Standard pump with plastic impeller; the blades are located lower and have a more elongated shape. A new type pump equipped with a plastic impeller with extended blades. HEPU pump with a more durable cast iron impeller.

As a result of the described modifications, the engine warms up in almost the same way as with electric fans, but when the temperature reaches +80? C, then it rises very slowly.

VAZ 2121 is a rather interesting car that can give you a surprise right on the road. Quite recently, I encountered such a breakdown as a pump malfunction, which caused me to overheat the engine. It is worth noting that if the pump does not circulate antifreeze or antifreeze through the system, the engine overheats greatly and can lead to the most serious consequences, and this is an expensive engine repair. I don’t recommend delaying the replacement of the pump on the Niva, so today I am publishing detailed instructions on this topic.

If you have the time and desire, you can replace the pump on a VAZ 2121 with your own hands in a short time.

Video. Faulty pump on Niva

(we need an urgent replacement of the pump for the VAZ 2121)

For this we need the following tools:

1. Phillips screwdriver. 2. Ratchet handle. 3. Extension cord. 4. Collar. 5. Key head for 10 and 13.

Let us remind you that in the previous article we told you how to install an alarm system on a Priora with your own hands. Now the times have come that you simply cannot save on a car security system, so we looked at a possible way to install an alarm on a car.

Do-it-yourself pump replacement on Niva

To replace the pump, we need to drain the antifreeze or antifreeze from the car's cooling system. We unscrew the cooling radiator cap, then the plug in the cylinder block and drain the coolant into a suitable container. To remove the water pump, you will need to loosen the alternator belt a little in order to carefully remove the part.

We unscrew the nuts that secure the coolant supply tube to the water pump, there are only 2 of them, see the image for more details.

To avoid breaking the tube, carefully move it back. Just add a little effort and you will have to replace this tube too.

Then you need to unscrew the bolt that holds the pump mount on top.

And two more bolts from the bottom, see photo.

Now you need to take a Phillips screwdriver and loosen the clamps of the pipe that runs from the thermostat to the water pump. We pull out the hose, then remove the entire pump body, since there are no more fasteners.

It is worth noting that it is not always necessary to remove the pump on a VAZ 2121 along with the body, but rather just remove the required part. But it’s even easier, you need to take a 13mm wrench and unscrew a couple of nuts with a slight movement of your hand. The cost of a new water pump was about 1,500 rubles, but with the coming crisis you no longer know what the price will be tomorrow.

Installing a new pump on a Niva occurs in the reverse order; do not forget to pour enough antifreeze or antifreeze into the car’s cooling system.

Lada 4x4 (VAZ-21214): Removing the engine coolant pump

Drain the coolant from the engine (see “Replacing the coolant,” page 20).

Remove the auxiliary drive belt (see “Checking the condition and replacing the auxiliary drive belt,” p. 30). Use a 13mm socket to loosen the three bolts securing the coolant pump pulley.

We hold the pulley from turning with a slotted screwdriver, alternately inserting it between the head of each fastening bolt and the shoulder of the pulley hub.

Unscrew the fastening bolts.

Unscrew the adjusting nut completely and remove the bolt.

Remove the pump cover complete with impeller and bearing.

The joint between the cover and the coolant pump housing is sealed with a gasket.

We install the coolant pump cover in the reverse order.

To remove the coolant pump assembly.

Using a 13" socket with an extension, unscrew the two bolts of the lower

attaching the pump housing to the cylinder block.

The joint between the coolant pump housing and the cylinder block is sealed with a gasket.

We install the coolant pump in the reverse order.

The order of work is as follows:

  • First you need to drain the coolant from the system of the VAZ 2121 car
  • Then we unscrew the pipes that go to the pump, using the necessary screwdriver
  • After this, use a 10mm wrench, in this case it is more convenient to use a socket to unscrew the tube from the left side, as is clearly shown in the photo below, by unscrewing the two nuts at the top and bottom:

And now we move the tube to the side, applying the necessary force:

Now you can start unscrewing the fastening bolts; first, it is advisable to unscrew them using a wrench, since they can be screwed in quite tightly. And after that, you can throw on a ratchet to do everything much faster and more conveniently. First unscrew the top bolt:

And then the two lower ones, also using an extension cord and a ratchet handle:

And now you can safely remove the Niva’s pump without any obstacles or difficulties, pulling it slightly towards you and swaying it from side to side if it sits tightly on the sealant, as was the case in my case:

We replace the pump on the Niva in the reverse order. The price of a water pump in stores across the country is approximately 700 rubles.
