Priora silent blocks signs of malfunction

Installing rear independent suspension on a car

When operating a vehicle on which a standard rear suspension is installed, the vehicle beam shifts towards the arch when cornering by approximately 1 cm. If the vehicle is equipped with a rear independent suspension, then such a beam displacement is not observed under similar operating conditions.
The rear independent suspension is attached rigidly to the body, without using silent blocks in mounting the rear suspension on the Priora, which avoids lateral displacement of the beam. Silent blocks, which are part of the design of the rear and front suspensions, perform the function of damping all torques and bending moments that may occur during movement, thereby ensuring a stable position of the vehicle on uneven road surfaces and when turning.

Silent blocks are mounted on a car as an element of the chassis and suspension, since this structural element is one of the most reliable and economical ways to prevent the influence of various types of deformations and loads that can occur during the operation of the car on the car body. Installation and replacement of silent blocks on Priora is provided for in some vehicle suspension components:

Why did I decide to change the racks

Failed struts negatively affect the level of comfort when driving and the handling of the car. They also sharply reduce the permissible load of the car - with faulty rear shock absorbers, even when filling a full tank, the car’s feed can sag noticeably.

A faulty shock absorber strut is indicated by:

  • car rocking when driving over uneven surfaces;
  • blows and knocks;
  • change in clearance.

As for silent blocks, they have slightly different signs of malfunction:

  • significant reduction in cornering stability;
  • uneven wear of tires caused by a violation of the wheel toe angle;
  • a feeling of impacts on the body and a grinding sound in the rear of the car that appears when driving over potholes and bumps;
  • vibrations and the appearance of extraneous sounds coming from the side where the rear suspension is located.

As they say, I was lucky - the bushings were not worn out enough to critically affect the operation of the suspension. To be honest, I paid attention to their appearance and performance only when I was replacing the rear pillars on a VAZ 21099 in stages. Well, my racks were really in a rather “sad” state.

Why change silent blocks

Before you begin replacing the rear beam silent blocks on a VAZ 2110, you need to figure out why such a procedure is being carried out at all.

In fact, it is not always silent blocks that cause car problems. But there are situations in which repairs should be performed immediately.

  1. When traveling, the tires begin to squeak. If the silent blocks are out of order, they cannot move at the same time as the wheels, they are inferior in rotation speed, which is why noise occurs.
  2. Knocks are heard from the rear of the car.
  3. The car is difficult to control, the rear end constantly skids, and it is difficult to take turns.
  4. There is uneven wear on the rear tires; they lose their quality faster than the front tires.
  5. In some cases, tires go flat even though there is no damage.

Polyurethane or rubber silent blocks: which is better?

Today on the market you can find rubber silents, which are based on rubber. Such elements are considered traditional and relatively affordable. At the same time, among the disadvantages are low service life, squeaks, low resistance to deformation, aggressive reagents, etc.

The disadvantages of polyurethane silent blocks include their high cost, the availability of suitable options not for all car models, and owners often complain about squeaks (especially in dry weather), since the silent block material is denser and less pliable.

Replacement of silent blocks of front levers of VAZ 2110

Some car owners are afraid to replace the silent blocks of the front beam on a VAZ 2110 on their own. But in vain. Contacting a service station entails serious financial costs. Plus, it’s far from a fact that the service station will do your job better than you would have done yourself.

Zapisovka

The only thing is that you may need the help of a car service friend. All service stations have a special puller in their tool arsenal. There is no point in purchasing it, since it is expensive and is rarely needed by a car owner. Some craftsmen even make their own puller using a homemade method. There are many drawings and diagrams according to which it is made. So you can try it if you have free time.

There are two silent blocks in the front beam - in the front upper and front lower arm. The procedure for replacing them is somewhat different from each other, so we will consider the processes separately.

Let us immediately note that it is easier to work with it than with the second element. The entire procedure involves performing several sequential operations.

  1. Raise the car on a jack and secure it in a stationary position. Turn on the handbrake, put stoppers under the wheels.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Unscrew and remove the support. To do this, you will need to turn the wheel out and hit the bipod with a hammer. It is better to do this through some kind of insert.
  4. By knocking out the support, you can remove the upper front control arm without serious problems.
  5. There is a bolt on the side, it is quite long. Unscrew it. Inspect the end play. Most likely, it is quite serious and is easily felt when checking. Therefore, you absolutely correctly decided to change the silent blocks.
  6. You can remove the silent block with a hammer and chisel. Just don't hit it too hard, or you'll damage other suspension components.
  7. In some cases, the silent block sits very firmly, so you can’t do without a drill and drilling it. After making the holes, you can safely remove the element.
  8. Now use the smaller bushing to press the new silent block into place. The part must fit firmly and securely into the socket.

Recording method

Some novice drivers, of whom there are quite a few VAZ-2110 owners, believe that when repairing the front suspension, you should first of all pay attention to the levers, beams and shock absorbers. Such inconspicuous and simple details as rubber silent blocks are often simply ignored. Nevertheless, it is these parts that ensure a reliable connection between the suspension arms

Nevertheless, it is these parts that ensure a reliable connection between the suspension arms.

Although silent blocks are not a consumable material, rubber tends to break down over time. Severe operating conditions, especially on roads with poor quality surfaces, also affect these parts. Failure of the silent block can provoke friction between the metal parts of the suspension, and their failure

Therefore, it is important to monitor the condition of these rubber suspension parts

Diagnostics of silent blocks

In order to check the condition of the front beam silent blocks, you can proceed in two ways:

  • Do-it-yourself replacement of rear beam silent blocks on a VAZ 2110

  1. The easiest way to diagnose the suspension is at a service station. Although some unscrupulous craftsmen may “discover” many problems, in the hope of getting more money for repairs.
  2. An experienced driver only needs to drive the car for several kilometers, listening to how the front suspension works, to understand what the problem is.

When listening to the suspension work, you need to pay attention to the following nuances:

  1. While driving, you can hear a characteristic squeaking sound of rubber. These sounds may be barely audible, but their presence most often indicates wear of the silent blocks. In this case, the car is driven into a pit, and the rubber parts are checked for tears or cracks. If a silent block with a crack can still serve for some time, then the torn part should be replaced immediately.
  2. If characteristic metallic knocks appear in the area of the front suspension, you need to drive the car to the inspection hole as quickly as possible. As a rule, this indicates maximum wear of the rubber suspension parts.

Before you begin the process of replacing suspension parts with your own hands, you need to prepare a place and a set of tools. A garage with a spacious inspection pit is ideal as a place. As for tools, to replace you will need:

  1. Set of wrenches and sockets with ratchet.
  2. Special puller for pressing out silent blocks. You can either buy this specific tool or ask your garage mechanic friends to borrow it while you work.
  3. VD-40 or analogues.
  4. Soap solution.

If you cannot get a puller, you can use available equipment. This can be done by a tube of suitable diameter with washers and a vice.

Replacement process

If replacing rubber suspension parts is new to the car owner, it may immediately seem like a very time-consuming and complicated procedure. Often, at the inspection stage, inexperienced VAZ-2110 owners decide that they won’t be able to do anything on their own. In fact, the replacement process is quite simple. If you do this once, changing any silent blocks in the future will be easy and simple.

Replacement occurs according to the following algorithm:

  1. First you need to raise the front wheel using a jack. It is advisable to use a hydraulic jack, and place wheel chocks under the rear wheels on both sides. It is advisable to duplicate the jack with a support. This way the car will definitely not jump off and crush its owner.

    We remove the wheel.

  2. Next you need to unscrew and remove the wheel.
  3. At this moment, you can also check the silent blocks that are located in the levers. If they are loose, then you need to replace them too.
  4. The front support is knocked out. Before doing this, unscrew the nut that holds it in place. The blow should be accurate, but not strong.

    Unscrew the saber nut.

  5. After this, you can remove the upper arm. To do this you need to unscrew the bolt.

    Having removed the saber, we get free access to the silent block itself.

  6. After these procedures, you can knock out the silent blocks themselves. A chisel and hammer are used for this. As a rule, they come out easily, but in rare cases you need to use WD-40.

    It will be easier to knock out the parts if you trim them.

  7. Now you need to install the new part. To do this you will need a pressing tool. In order for this process to go smoothly, it is recommended to clean the socket from rust and lubricate it and the part with a soapy solution.

    Before pressing, generously lubricate the parts with soapy water.

Examination

After the work is completed, there should be no play, otherwise the suspension will cause many problems in the future. Then everything is put together in reverse order.

Set of parts for mounting the air suspension of Lada Priora

The independent suspension on the Priora is installed on the car yourself, and the installation process is simple. Therefore, every car enthusiast can install air suspension on a Priora if you follow certain tips and recommendations from experts.

  • air spring;
  • compressor;
  • fasteners and braces;
  • pneumatic valves;
  • pressure gauge;
  • start button;
  • air supply line;
  • air pressure sensor;
  • start relay.

In the process of pumping compressed air into the airbag, the ground clearance of the Lada Priora changes. When the pressure in the air bag decreases, the ground clearance of the vehicle decreases. Adjusting the ride height is the main function of the Priora suspension airbag.

An independent suspension is mounted on the Priora using special fasteners and braces. Using these elements, the Lada Priora air suspension is attached to the car body. If you have some skills in working with metal, you can make these parts yourself, but it is best to order these fastening components for the Priora suspension and make them from a specialist. In this case, there will be a guarantee of high-quality manufacturing of components.

To install it in the suspension system on a Priora, you can use the same pressure gauge that is used in pneumatic systems operating at a pressure of a certain range. The start button is designed to adjust the state of the air suspension directly from the interior of the Lada Priora.

How to easily replace the struts and silent blocks of the rear beam on a VAZ 21099 yourself

I am glad to welcome you, my dear readers! As you remember, I own a Russian car model VAZ 21099. I have already told you about the individual procedures for its repair and improvement, and today we will talk about the car’s suspension. More specifically, about the rear suspension of the car, implemented in the form of a beam with a dependent pair of wheels.

This design is simple and reliable, requires minimal maintenance and does not need adjustment. However, this does not mean that certain structural parts cannot simply break down. And especially often it is necessary to change silent blocks and racks on the beam.

Today I will share with you the secret of how to replace the rear pillar of a VAZ 21099 with your own hands and without special tools. I did all the work even without an inspection hole - it turned out to be enough to simply lift the rear of my car with a jack and fix it with chocks. Now I will tell you about this in more detail.

HOW TO REPLACE THE BUSHING BLOCKS OF THE REAR BEAM OF VAZ 2110,2111,2112

How to replace the silent blocks of the lower control arms on a VAZ 2110 (2112) with your own hands?

For the softness and comfort of driving a car, not only properly inflated wheels or comfortable seats are responsible, the serviceability of the suspension is important, the parts of which must work as a single whole. Failure to operate at least one of the above components will lead to a general imbalance and disruption of ride comfort in general. One of the most important elements of a car suspension is rubber and rubber-metal seals, they are called silent blocks. Thanks to these seemingly inconspicuous and unnecessary rubber or polyurethane rollers, the suspension parts are connected. While the connection is rigid, softness between the parts is maintained, which allows the motorist to drive quietly and comfortably, “without knocking or rattling iron.”

On the pages of VAZ Repair we have already talked about how to replace silent blocks in the article: Replacing silent blocks on a VAZ 2109, this time you will learn how to replace silent blocks on lower control arms on a VAZ 2110 at home.

What to do about the knocking?

If you do not pay attention to the problem and do not change the silent blocks on the grant, the knocking will become increasingly stronger. Therefore, it’s time to drive the car into the pit, remove the engine protection, and look at all the details. You can swing the car from the desired side, whether you hear a knock or not, but it will happen if the silent block on the grant has become completely unusable. If the problem is in the stretcher, then you need to pull it too, the resulting knock will be proof that the cause of the breakdown has been found.

You can replace the silent blocks with grants, the price of which seems reasonable, right in the pit, without the need to remove the levers.

Tools required:

1. 2 keys for 24. 2. Extension tubes. 3. Head 17. 4. Thin screwdriver. 5. Punch, it is better to give preference to the canonical one. 6. A hammer, it will hardly be possible to do without it in work when the silent blocks of the grant need to be replaced.

Unpleasant surprise - faulty silent blocks

While working on the racks, I discovered that the silent blocks of the VAZ beam also needed to be replaced. Of course, you can’t call them completely “dead”; they have already begun to play, which is fraught with trouble. Therefore, it is better to change the silent blocks immediately, while the rear car suspension is disassembled (that is, the struts are removed), than to do similar work again later.

Replacing the silent blocks of a VAZ 21099 beam is not difficult:

  1. Initially, you need to remove the rod from the brake regulator (sorcerer) - it is located on the left side. To dismantle it, you just need to pull out the bracket holding the rod. Then remove the handbrake cable from the mounting on the right.
  2. Then, using a 19mm wrench, you need to unscrew the nut attaching the rear beam to the bracket. Then remove the unscrewed bolt.
  3. Next, you need to slightly raise the rear of the car with a jack until the beam can be positioned below the eye. Then you need to place a block between the beam and the body that will wedge them. As a result, our beam is located below the eye - without this, replacing the silent blocks of the VAZ beam will not work.
  4. Then we take a hammer (sledgehammer) and a drift. The latter is used as a piece of pipe, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the eyelet. Vigorous blows of the hammer on the drift attached to the silent block knock it out.
  5. At the next stage, it is extremely important to thoroughly clean the inside of the bracket from dirt and rust. Then the bushing and the eye itself are lubricated with a soap solution - without this, replacing the silent blocks of the VAZ rear beam is practically impossible, since the bushing will fit quite difficult. In addition, there is a high risk of damage to the gum.
  6. Then all that remains is to press in the silent block using a special device. If there are no special tools, then replacing the silent blocks of the VAZ 21099 beam is carried out using a series of gentle blows on it with a hammer.
  7. Then you need to remove the wooden block, then raise the beam until the eye is level with the bracket.
  8. All that remains is to return the fastening bolts to their place and screw the nuts onto them by hand - the final tightening of the assembly is carried out only after installing the wheels and lowering the car from the supports to the ground.

Changing the front beam

how to remove the front beam on a Priora, strengthening the spar under the beam

For work, prepare two keys 17, 19, 24, WD-40 lubricant, and a ball joint remover. Removing and installing the front suspension arm in the following order:

  1. Place the car over the inspection hole. You can install the front of the car on stable supports.
  2. Secure the car with the handbrake.
  3. Remove the wheels. To do this, moving in a circle, gradually loosen the bolts, and then smoothly pull the wheel towards you, accepting it.
  4. Coat the threaded connections of the lever with WD-40.
  5. While holding the bolt securing the stabilizer bar to the lever, do not allow it to turn. Smoothly unscrew the fastening nut and remove the bolt.
  6. Holding the extension from turning with a wrench, unscrew the nut securing it to the beam.
  7. Remove the washer gasket.
  8. Unscrew the ball joint bolt and press the ball joint pin out of the beam.
  9. While holding the spring washer bolt from turning with a wrench, remove the nut that secures the washer to the lever.
  10. Smoothly remove the end of the lever from the body bracket.
  11. Remove the beam from the brace.
  12. Remove several washers from the guy and mark them so that when installing, put them in the same order.
  13. Inspect the part for damage: as it wears, the rubber will bulge, crack, and possibly peel off from the metal.
  14. If it is necessary to replace the silent blocks of the front beam of the Priora, unscrew the bolt securing the front silent block with a 18mm socket. The rear mounting bolts are unscrewed with a 15mm socket.
  15. Remove the silent block, noting its seating depth. Place the new part in place of the old one in strict accordance with the marked depth.
  16. Install a new lever. Place the washers in the marked order, with the same side in relation to the center of the part with which they were installed previously. Please note that the final tightening of the connections is carried out after the car is lowered to the ground.

How to replace the silent block of the rear beam of a Lada Priora car

To replace the silent block, removing the beam from the car is not required. We change the silent blocks one by one:

- first at one, then at the other beam lever.

To complete the work you will need:

- car stand;

- universal cup puller.

We prepare the car for work.

We place the car on a reliable stand and remove the rear wheel.

3. Disconnect the elastic lever of the pressure regulator from the earring. 4. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the beam and bracket.
5. Using a 19mm spanner, unscrew the nut, holding the bolt securing the lever to the bracket, and use another wrench of the same size to remove the bolt. 6. We insert a wooden block between the body and the beam. At the same time, make sure that the brake hose of the rear wheel is not stretched.

Using a cup puller for wheel hub bearings or suitable pipe sections, press the silent block towards the threshold of the car. The wheel bearing puller bolt does not fit into the hole in the silent block, so we replace it with a bolt or screw Ø 12 mm. (The cylinder head screw is suitable.)

Squeeze the silent block into the puller cup. We clean the hole for the silent block in the lever from dirt.

The silent block has a stop on one edge, and therefore it should only be pressed out towards the threshold of the car.

9. Wet the new silent block and the hole in the beam with soapy water 10. Insert the silent block into the hole in the lever and press it in with the same puller.

We install the lever in the body bracket and fix it with a bolt and nut without tightening it.

rice. eleven

The lever fastening bolt is inserted into the body bracket from the side of the car threshold.

We insert the elastic lever of the pressure regulator into the earring and secure it with a stopper.

We fix the hand brake cable in the brackets.

We install the wheel and remove the car from the stands.

15. Press the rear of the car several times to self-install the suspension.

16. Finally tighten the nut of the lever mounting bolt to a torque of 66.6–82.3 Nm (6.8–8.4 kgf-m).

17. We replace the silent block of the second lever in the same way.

Replacing silent blocks on Kalina

Front suspension silent block close up

The silent blocks on the Lada Kalina car are located exactly the same as in the VAZs of previous years. These elements are located generally on the wishbone or adjacent to it. You will have to change them either on the entire element at once, or by selecting the most damaged ones. Of course, if there is damage on one of them, the wishbone with rubber (stock – approx.) stabilizers must be removed and replaced with polyurethane analogues.

Removing the wishbone

  1. In order to begin work on replacing old silent blocks with new ones, you need to place the car on a viewing hole, a lift, or jack it up.
  2. Next, you need to remove the wheel and spray all the connections on the wishbone with WD-40.
  3. After the lubricant has penetrated into all hard-to-reach places, we begin to unscrew the bolts.
  4. First of all, we begin to dismantle the ball joint bolt, but before that we remove the cotter pin from the bolt.
  5. Then we unscrew the bolt securing the longitudinal tension hinge (where the “daisies” are attached - approx.) and remove it from the seat.

A generously lubricated bolt is a guarantee of success.

When dismantling this unit, there should be no problems.

For the best impact on the bolt, you can use a wrench extension.

Rubber-metal longitudinal tension joint

The rubber-metal longitudinal tension joint, or popularly simply “daisy”, is designed to take the brunt of the impact from uneven road surfaces; despite the fact that this element is very important, it is very easy to dismantle.

  1. Having previously clamped the lever in a vice, we knock out the silent blocks one by one using a chisel or a thin flat screwdriver.

Punching out “daisies” is not an easy task.

What suspension elements need diagnostics?

So, what needs to be done if there is a knock in the suspension , and we’ll also talk about the reasons for its occurrence. First of all, we need to clarify something... If the suspension rattles, it means this is the result of a malfunction or incorrect operation of any part or chassis mechanism, for example, the following may fail:

  1. Shock absorber;
  2. Spring;
  3. Spherical bearing;
  4. Lower arm with silent block;
  5. Upper suspension support with bearings;
  6. Stabilizer link;
  7. Stabilizer support;
  8. Steering rack;
  9. Tie Rod;
  10. Steering tips;
  11. Wheel bearing;
  12. Steering cardan;
  13. CV joint (outer joint).

It will not be possible to determine the malfunction by ear, nor will it be possible to find the source of this knocking noise in the front suspension. In order to find the malfunction, it is necessary to carry out a thorough diagnosis.

Selection of parts and necessary tools

Before you start directly replacing silent blocks, it is important to properly prepare for it. There are few recommendations specifically for choosing new parts.

The auto parts market is simply filled with silent blocks from different manufacturers, mostly they are all quite good. The only thing you can do to make a better choice of new parts is to consult with auto mechanics in your area. The main thing is that the new vibration isolators fit completely.

For repair work you will need the following things:

Set of new silent blocks

Replacing suspension silent blocks with your own hands

The suspension silent blocks on the VAZ-2112 are located in the arms of both the rear beam and the front one. It is advisable to replace them comprehensively. The replacement process is approximately the same on both the rear and front parts of the suspension. Below are instructions for both cases.

Front control arms

Replacing front control arm silent blocks on a VAZ-2112 is the following process:

  1. First of all, the car must be placed above the inspection hole or use a lift. Then remove the engine compartment protection represented by the casing.

Removing the engine protection

Unscrew the nut of the stabilizer bar mounting bolt.

Unscrew the nut on the extension

Unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the lever to the body

A long bolt, a couple of washers and a nut are all sold in hardware stores and can be used to make a puller

“Let’s spritz”, it’s better to heat it up some more. Next, we use our puller to press out the silent block.

We clean the socket from rust and dirt, lubricate

We press new silent blocks into the mounting groove

New silent block installed

Replacing silent blocks in the rear beam

Replacing the rear silent blocks is done as follows:

  1. Again, the car must be driven into a viewing hole or raised on a lift.
  2. Then, taking a 19mm wrench, you need to disconnect the rear beam from the bracket by unscrewing the nuts securing it.

Unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the lever to the bracket

Press the silent block towards the car threshold

Press in the silent block using a puller

Pressing in the silent block

To press in the new silent block, we need the old wheel bearing, namely its inner race. It consists of two separate parts that have a large chamfer, with the help of which we will tuck the side of the silent block into the lever. This is what one inner half of the wheel bearing looks like.

Using a bolt with a nut, washers and the internal parts of the wheel bearing, we assemble such a sandwich.

We generously lubricate everything with silicone grease, coat the threads of the bolt and washer with lithol or something similar and begin tightening the nut (pressing in the silent block). We tighten it until the silent block is completely installed in its place, disassemble everything, and rejoice. If everything is done correctly, then replacement does not take much time and effort.

Basic faults

A beam can fail for two reasons:

  1. displacement from place;
  2. mechanical damage (most often a crack).

When a crack occurs in the lever, the torsional rigidity of the body decreases. This parameter determines the degree of safety, as well as the position of the parts. The fact is that with normal body rigidity, which is laid down during design and obtained after the final stage of car assembly, absolutely all components and assemblies (down to the bolts) are in place, they have a maximum permissible vibration amplitude. For example, the suspension “swallows” potholes - the parts actively move, and people in the cabin may not even notice the rolling.

In addition to the fact that you will most likely have to get used to unpleasant sounds, there will be increased wear and tear on small parts. When a lever cracks, everything that is attached to it begins to move with greater amplitude. The problem is temporarily solved by welding, but this only postpones the solution to the problem for some time. Craftsmen recommend changing the beam.

Replacing the silent blocks of the front beam of a VAZ 2110-12, Priora

Mechanical damage manifests itself in the connection of metal with rubber in the Priora levers - when wear reaches its climax, the rubber cracks and peels off. Because of this, a knock occurs in the front and rear suspension, and the car wobbles along the road.

Displacement of the lever can occur after an accident or falling into a hole - in this case, the wheel alignment may be disrupted, the steering linkage may be knocked down, and other serious damage to the suspension may occur. It is prohibited to drive a car with such damage. For your safety and the safety of other road users, it is recommended to call a tow truck to deliver the car to the repair site.

What is a silent block?

The silent block also has another name - rubber-metal hinge. It consists of 2 combined metal bushings, separated by a durable elastic polyurethane insert.

Its primary task is to dampen vibrations in the connections of parts that occur when the machine moves. Uneven road surfaces, potholes and other obstacles transfer a large amount of shock loads to the car’s suspension. Up to 90% of them are taken over by the silent block.

The car's suspension uses two types of rubber-metal joints for the front and rear wheels. This allows the shock load to be evenly distributed along the entire length of the suspension. Additionally, silent blocks are installed in the mounting elements of the gearbox and engine.

Rear suspension

Unlike the front, it has undergone virtually no changes. Here, just like on the first Soviet G8s, a semi-independent beam is used. It is attached to the body on hinges (fortunately, there are no “crabs” in the design). A helical spring with constant stiffness is used as an elastic element. To dampen vibrations and prevent swinging, two shock absorbers are used.

  • High reliability. The design does not have additional levers, which, in addition, can bend when falling into a large hole.
  • Energy intensity. The Lada Granta absorbs all bumps perfectly, especially if oil shock absorbers are installed at the rear.
  • Cheap maintenance. Due to its simple design, this pendant can be rebuilt even with your own hands. And the cost of new rubber-metal elements is unlikely to empty the pockets of even the most stingy car owner.

The main difference between the “Grant” suspension is the wheel alignment angles.

Garage or service station

All car enthusiasts can be divided into two categories:

  1. Those who do most of the repairs independently in their garage, and only in critical cases turn to a car service;
  2. Those who prefer not to touch anything with their own hands, but completely entrust repairs and services to service station technicians.

Each of them is right in their own way. Therefore, we have no right to reproach those who do not want to carry out repairs themselves. After all, garage and professional repair of silent blocks, like other components, has its advantages.

STO has the following advantages:

  • A high-quality, responsible car service provides a guarantee for repairs performed;
  • In the event of a repeated breakdown covered by the warranty, repairs will be carried out free of charge;
  • Professionals are professionals; they have extensive experience and knowledge, which allows them to competently perform their work.

Read:

But first you need to find such a car service, which, alas, is not an easy matter. Many provide a guarantee, but when you re-apply, they do everything possible to prove that the breakdown does not comply with the terms of the guarantee. A banal trick.

Repairing your garage will provide the following advantages:

  • Significant financial savings, since you only have to spend money on consumables;
  • The quality of the work performed by a master is always in doubt if you do not know this person personally. So self-repair may be much better than at a service station;
  • You purchase the silent block, and the master only installs it. Why pay money for work that you can do yourself?!;
  • Guarantee that a new one will be installed instead of the old silent block. Questionable service stations can easily install an old, more or less usable silent block instead of the one you gave them. You know what the result is.

Replacement methods

Read:

We will tell you about two main ways to replace silent blocks on the rear beam, which can easily be used in a garage.

Decide for yourself which method to choose. But before that, familiarize yourself with them in more detail.

First way

The method is not particularly difficult if you strictly follow the instructions. To begin with, we note that the silent block is located at the bottom of the car. Therefore, you will need a jack or inspection hole.

Defects

  1. Raise the car with a jack or drive it into a viewing hole. The second option is more convenient, since this way the view of the bottom will be better. And it’s much more convenient to work standing up than lying under a car.
  2. It is not necessary to completely remove the rear beam. When dismantling it, you will need to remove additional brake hoses, which takes a lot of time.
  3. It is better to disconnect the sorcerer so as not to damage it during the repair process. But shoot carefully.
  4. Now remove the nut with a 19mm wrench. You will have to make a serious effort, which is why some car owners call their comrades for help. If there are no assistants, pre-treat the thread with the almighty WD40 or plain water. This will allow the fastener to oxidize. Then clean it with a wire brush, which will make it easier to remove the element.
  5. Using a crowbar, lower the beam down a little, but do not remove it completely.
  6. There is an elastic band on the beam that should be cut off, otherwise it will interfere with the work process. Just keep in mind that if the rubber band is old, feel free to remove it. It is better to dismantle a good product by drilling a small hole.
  7. Now the silent block is removed.
  8. The new part is generously lubricated and pressed into its rightful place. Just do not use grease for lubrication, as this substance corrodes the part. The best lubrication option is regular soap or any available detergent.
  9. Return the sorcerer to its place and tighten the beam.

Second way

The second option for replacing the silent block is even simpler. But he also has his tricks.

Easy way

  1. Raise the car on a jack or drive it into a viewing hole.
  2. Using the same 19 mm wrench, remove the fastening nuts on the rear beam. This will allow you to detach the beam from the bracket.
  3. Remove the unscrewed bolt and move the rear beam eye down slightly.
  4. To make work easier, insert a wooden beam between the beam and the body, approximately the same size as a regular building brick.
  5. Remove the silent block by hitting it with a hammer.
  6. Lubricate the new block with something slippery, which will allow the element to do its job better.
  7. Press the silent block into its place.
  8. Remove the inserted beam and return the beam to its original position, securing it with fasteners.

At this point, the procedure for replacing the silent block of the rear beam of your domestic ten produced by AvtoVAZ can be considered complete.

Both methods allow you to independently, without unnecessary problems, resolve the issue of a failed silent block. Just in case, don’t forget to call a friend in the garage who will help you at the most difficult stages.

Disassembly

Using the example of the Opel Zafia B, a method for replacing the silent blocks of the rear beam without completely removing the beam will be described.

Loosen the nut securing the silent block to the bracket. Unscrew the nuts securing the bracket to the car body. Remove the fastening bolt and the silent itself. Don't forget to mark where the silent block was located relative to the bracket! Operations No. 1-3 should be performed on the second side as well. Raise the rear of the car with a jack and secure it on stands. The beam should lower slightly, after which you will have room to press out. Assemble the puller as shown in the photo and video. The essence of pressing out is to create the necessary force by holding the bolt on one side and tightening the nut on the other side to remove the silent block from the seat. In the video, the master drills the outer ring of the rubber damper, thereby weakening the internal tension

But note that the outer ring has a thickening that allows you to carefully drill a hole. In the case of most products, you will not be able to do this trick.

Pressing and assembly

Clean the seat in the beam thoroughly. It is best to use a metal drill brush, but a regular brush with metal fibers will also work. Before pressing, generously lubricate the seat with engine oil or other grease. Since the rubber damper is in a metal frame, technical fluids will not harm it and will not affect its service life in any way. On the pressing side, we recommend removing a small chamfer on the outer ring - this way the part will fit better into the mounting hole.

The same puller is suitable for pressing. As a mandrel for pressing, you can use the clip from under the old silent block. If you do not have suitable mandrels, then you can cut a square 3-4 mm thick as a stop. In this case, at the end of pressing, the rubber damper will rest against the thrust plate. To press the part flush, you will need to put something under the plate.

If necessary, the alignment can be corrected by carefully hitting the mandrel from the protruding side with a hammer.

When installing the bracket to lift and guide the beam, you will need to guide the beam into position manually or using a jack. It may be enough to lower the body. In any case, you need to navigate the place and the current situation. Initially, all the bolts and nuts only need to be tightened, then the bracket mounting bolts must be tightened. After which you can lower the car onto the wheels and tighten the bolt securing the silent block

The bolt should only tighten when the car is standing under its own weight on the ground - this is very important!

Replacing silent blocks with complete removal of the beam

Below in the video you can see the process of replacing silent blocks with complete removal of the rear beam. The disadvantage of this method is that you need to disconnect the brake hose, since its length is not enough to completely lower the beam. Of course, after replacement, you will need to refill the brake fluid and bleed the brakes, which is quite difficult to do alone.

Silent blocks: purpose and condition diagnosis

Silent blocks are vibration-isolating parts used in the suspension structure of any modern car. Such vibration isolators consist of metal and rubber (elastomer). Thanks to the use of vulcanized processing technology, silent blocks are excellent dampers and insulators from external vibrations received by the machine when moving.

These parts, familiar to every car enthusiast, need to be changed from time to time. Therefore, our resource decided to highlight in today’s material the question of how to replace VAZ-2112 silent blocks with your own hands. Having familiarized yourself with it, the repair process itself and preparation for it will become a fairly simple task for you.

Thus, silent blocks provide not only comfort when driving a car, but also increase the service life of some other suspension parts for a considerable period.

Lifetime

On average, manufacturers of silent blocks set their service life to 100,000 kilometers. But, as noted earlier, due to the not very good condition of Russian roads, vibration isolators often wear out ahead of time. Many auto mechanics advise checking the condition of the VAZ-2112 suspension silent blocks every 15-20,000 kilometers, and replacing them every 60-80,000.

In any case, you can finally make sure that parts require replacement only by inspecting them. This can be done at a service station by lifting the car using a lift, or by using an inspection pit.

Symptoms of faulty silent blocks

Worn silent blocks

In addition to all this, the behavior of the car while driving can signal the wear of silent blocks, or more precisely:

  • spontaneous pulls of the car to the side;
  • “dull” sounds (knocking, grinding) from under the car;
  • the appearance of difficulties in driving your VAZ-2112, that is, a sluggish reaction to turning the steering wheel.

Checking the front suspension elements

Sagging (worn springs) have a great influence on the performance of the suspension as a whole, and when the springs are tired, this can be determined quite easily without tricky diagnostics, just carefully inspect the car from all sides and pay attention to the landing of the car, if it has become lower than usual, that is, the springs have already served their purpose and require replacement. When the springs sag, it becomes impossible to correctly adjust the wheel camber.

To check the ball joints, you can check how the lower arms move up and down. This check must be carried out in the inspection hole using a mount. There should be no noticeable play.

When pressing the silent blocks of the lower arms with a mount, there should also be no play, and cracked or squeezed out pieces of rubber are not at all acceptable. It is also worth paying attention to how the rubber peels off from the outer or inner bushing or not.

How to diagnose suspension

The failure of bearings can often be determined by rocking the machine up and down; if they are unusable, they will have play. It is not always possible to determine the torn rubber part in the suspension support without removing the support.

Replacing the silent blocks of the VAZ front arm

Front upper control arm silent block

We should also talk about axial play. To eliminate it, you can go in two ways:

  • The first is to replace the entire pillar. The option is so-so, since its cost is very high, but the quality is quite low;
  • The second is to tighten a couple of washers from the sides. They will not allow the mounting bolt to dangle.

silent block of the upper front control arm. part 3

The disadvantage of the second option is that installing washers sometimes leads to a situation where the silent block does not fit on the lever. Therefore, you have to reduce it with a hacksaw. Unfortunately, this leads to a reduction in the service life of the silent block.

Front lower control arm silent block

This procedure is rightly considered more complicated. Although even every motorist can handle it on his own.

  1. Remove the stabilizer. This will give you the ability to move the lever laterally.
  2. Next, remove all the nuts holding the silent block stationary.
  3. Remove the lower arm silent blocks. To do this, you will have to carry out all the activities that we described in the previous section when we removed the parts of the upper arm.
  4. After this, new elements are pressed in.
  5. Please note that the new silent blocks of the lower arm are fixed when the car is loaded. If you do this while the suspension is hanging, after a fairly short period of time the new components will break and you will have to do the whole job again.

As you can see, the work is difficult, but relatively so. If you first study our instructions, be sure to look at the instruction manual for your VAZ 2110, and also watch some visual videos, for example, the task will not be as difficult to complete as you thought at first glance.

That's why it's so useful to have good friends at the service station. They will not deceive and will do everything efficiently, as if for themselves. If there are no such comrades, there is always a certain risk of becoming a victim of deception. They have more than enough schemes. This is one of the good reasons why 10 owners try to do the repairs themselves.

Replacement of lower arms and silent blocks

Purpose and design of silent blocks: common malfunctions

So, a rubber-metal hinge or silent block (in everyday life is often called a salen block) is a simple part, which is based on a pair of metal bushings of different diameters.

A bushing with a smaller diameter is inserted into a bushing with a larger diameter. In this case, the distance between these bushings is filled using a special rubber insert.

Let us also add that in addition to the suspension, silent blocks are actively used in the design of the car at the junction of the internal combustion engine and the body, gearbox, various linkage mounts, stabilizers, etc. The dimensions of silent blocks, their shape and some features can be individual, but in general the design is often similar.

Taking into account their purpose, silent blocks are subject to serious loads during vehicle operation. Of course, such a part, for a number of reasons, in places of certain connections has a rather limited service life (50-60 thousand km). At the same time, in other joints the element can last much longer.

  • As for the suspension, in this case the silent block fails most often. In this case, the front suspension suffers more. For example, the silent block of the front suspension arm usually fails by 60-80 thousand km, while the silent blocks of the rear beam can last 150-200 thousand km. without any problems.

Depending on the design, already by 50 thousand km. The silent blocks of the front levers may require replacement (front silent blocks of the front levers, rear silent blocks of the front levers, etc.). Also, floating silent blocks are considered to be quite loaded and weak elements; silent blocks of rear suspension arms, etc., do not have a very long service life.

In turn, this leads to severe wear of the tires, the car holds the road worse, and the suspension wears out faster. In other words, the car’s behavior on the road becomes less predictable, and the service life of a number of parts is sharply reduced.

For this reason, silent blocks need to be checked every 50 thousand km. mileage To do this, it is enough to hang the front and then the rear axle alternately. Afterwards you need to check the levers for play and visually inspect the silent blocks.

Maximum attention should be paid to the rubber insert of the silent block. The appearance of cracks, tears, delaminations and other defects indicates the need for replacement. By the way, the metal part of a silent block rarely fails.

As a rule, problems are associated with the rubber insert. This is the answer to the question why the silent blocks creak, there is a knock in the area of connection and installation of the part, etc.

Often, the main reasons for the failure of silent blocks are:

  • natural aging of rubber, loss of elasticity, drying out, cracking;
  • errors when installing new parts, irregularities in tightening bolts or defects in the seat where the silent block is installed;
  • ingress of liquids and reagents that are aggressive to rubber products;

For example, if you tighten the bolts on a suspended axle (the car is on a lift or jacked up), then after the car is lowered onto the wheels, the rubber twists and the silent block breaks. The part may also be incorrectly installed or pressed. To avoid such mistakes, you need to separately study the question of how to change silent blocks.

When replacement is required

It will not be difficult for a more or less experienced driver to understand that the silent blocks are out of order and they need to be replaced. First of all, you will feel a certain discomfort while driving, you will hear the impact of iron in the suspension. But that's not all.

Determining the need to replace silent blocks is not difficult if you pay attention to the characteristic signs of their wear:

  • While driving, strong or minor rubber squeaks are observed. It all depends on the degree of wear. Loud noise is a very bad sign;
  • A noise similar to a knock is heard in the wheel area. This indicates that the silent blocks are poorly fixed and they are gradually destroyed;
  • Cracks form on the surface of the elements, after which the process of disintegration of the silent block begins. In such a situation, it will be impossible not to hear a knock.

How to properly replace silent blocks?

If a malfunction of one or a group of silent blocks is detected, you cannot hesitate. The vibration created by the car when moving will not be damped by the rubber suspension elements and will be transferred to other parts that will begin to deteriorate.

Ignoring the cheap operation of replacing a silent block can result in significant material costs. The greatest difficulty associated with replacing these elements is pressing. The operation requires the use of special equipment.

Of course, if the goal is to save money at any cost, you can turn to garage craftsmen who perform pressing of silent blocks using homemade equipment. It must be remembered that the quality of work in this case is very low. A guarantee for work performed is almost never given. All actions are performed at your own peril and risk.

If you need to properly replace silent blocks, it is best to contact specialized automobile repair centers. Specialists will be able to quickly and efficiently perform all operations to replace rubber-metal elements.

The cost of replacing the product consists of the price of the rubber element itself and its pressing. As a rule, the entire operation of replacing silent blocks does not take much time.

The device of the standard suspension of the Lada Priora

The support is secured using 3 nuts to the stand. Due to the presence of a high degree of elasticity, the support is capable of ensuring the rack swings during the operating stroke of the car suspension and vibration damping. The bearing built into the support allows the rack to rotate simultaneously with the wheels.

With the help of the latter, the angle of inclination of the rotation axis is adjusted. The rotary cam is equipped with a closed type bearing. A hub is mounted on the inner rings of the bearing to secure the wheel. The bearing is tightened with a nut on the shank located on the Lada Priora wheel drive housing and is not subject to adjustment. All hub nuts are interchangeable and have right-hand threads.
