Signs that your carburetor needs adjustment
The carburetor design on the VAZ-2101 is quite simple. It may vary slightly depending on the car model. It’s easy to understand that it’s time to configure this node. The main features are the following facts:
- The engine stalls at idle speed.
- The spark plugs are flooded or carbon deposits have formed, which prevents the engine from starting easily.
- Increased fuel consumption or fuel leakage (see fuel consumption table for carbureted vehicles).
In this case, a thorough check of the entire system will be required. In some cases, the malfunctions listed above are associated with other failures in components and mechanisms.
It is recommended to adjust the carburetor before the first signs of malfunction appear. The design of this unit requires adjustment every 8 thousand kilometers. This procedure must be carried out at least once a year, even if the car is rarely used.
Before starting work, if necessary, you need to repair the wiring, distributor and clean the spark plugs. There is a simple technology on how to properly adjust the carburetor on a VAZ 2101.
Repair instructions
As a rule, carburetor adjustment is required after 7500–8000 km. If the car is not used much, then this work should be carried out at least once a year. Before tuning, thoroughly clean the spark plugs, distributor and check the wiring.
Tip: During repairs, new cuffs and jets may be needed; these parts should be purchased in advance.
List of tools and preparatory work
Adjustment does not require much physical strength, the main thing is to do everything accurately and accurately. Preparing the tool:
- set of wrenches;
- flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
- rags;
- latex gloves;
- toothpicks;
- solvent;
- pump or can of compressed air.
The first step is to remove the top cover, float and vacuum valve from the carburetor.
After unscrewing the 4 nuts, remove the top cover of the carburetor and clean the chambers
The internal chambers must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and soot residues. We clean small holes with air using a spray can or a regular pump. Warm up the engine and set it to the handbrake.
How to adjust: step-by-step instructions
- We tighten the two diffuser quality screws until they stop.
Screw 1 adjusts the amount of gasoline supplied, screw 2 adjusts the throttle position
Advice: Engine idling should be smooth and stable; do not tighten the quality screw too much, as if the fuel is supplied suddenly, the engine will simply stall.

During the production of the VAZ 2101, several modifications of carburetors were installed in its system. They differ in the size of the jets, as well as the presence or absence of a vacuum corrector. In early Zhiguli models, a carburetor was installed with an ignition system without a vacuum corrector.
The most common carburetor on the VAZ 2101 car is the DAAZ carburetor model 2101-1107010. A vacuum corrector system is already used here. All modifications of carburetors can be adjusted using a similar scheme. But it is impossible to install a model with a vacuum corrector instead of a design without it, or vice versa. Carburetors of well-known brands DAAZ/Weber, Ozone, Solex are also often used; among non-standard carburetors, I would like to highlight Solex 21073 and Solex 21083.

Common causes of carburetor failure and their solutions
If one of the system elements in the carburetor fails, you may not notice it immediately. Failures appear gradually. Often, unstable idle speed is explained by a failed solenoid valve. Not all carburetors have such a device.
To test the solenoid valve, you will need to disconnect the wire connected to it. A positive contact is supplied to it from the battery. Correct wiring is indicated by a slight click.
You need to check the voltage on the wire that connects to the solenoid valve. If there is no voltage in the line, the wiring has failed. It will be necessary to completely replace the network from the ignition switch to the solenoid valve.
Unstable speed can also be observed when the spark plug electrodes are covered with a large layer of soot. The spark power is insufficient. It cannot ignite the fuel mixture. The poor condition of the spark plugs is due to incorrect carburetor settings. In this case, it supplies too much fuel to the combustion chamber.
The cause of this malfunction may be a burnt-out intake valve. It is responsible for the amount of fuel that is supplied to the combustion chamber of the engine. To ensure this, you need to adjust the carburetor. If this does not help, the inlet valve will need to be replaced.
How to adjust the carburetor on a VAZ 2101
What is needed for adjustment
First you need to prepare the appropriate repair kit for the VAZ 2101 carburetor. You will also need new cuffs, carburetor jets and other spare parts. To adjust the carburetor, you will need a repair kit, which includes the following tools:
- Spanners.
- Rags.
- Screwdrivers (phillips, flat).
- Protective gloves.
- Solvent.
- Toothpicks.
- Compressed air can or pump.
After appropriate preparation of the repair kit, you can begin adjusting the VAZ-2101 carburetor. This does not require much effort. All actions must be careful and precise.
You also need to inspect the components on which the operation of the motor may depend. You need to inspect the spark plugs. By their appearance you can tell in what proportions the fuel is mixed with air.
The carburetor needs to be cleaned. To do this, dismantle its top cover. The float and vacuum valve are removed. The interior of the chambers needs to be cleaned. Soot and dirt accumulate here. Cleaning is carried out using an air can or a pump.
Another mandatory action is to check the gap between the distributor electrodes, as well as the high-voltage coil and wires. The adjustment is carried out only after the engine has warmed up to 90ºС. Cars are put on handbrake.
Throttle valve adjustment
Adjusting the VAZ-2101 carburetor begins with adjusting the throttle valve. This is a simple procedure. It can be done in three stages. Manually turn the damper control lever counterclockwise. It opens completely.
The distance to the primary chamber is measured. The carburetor design suggests that this figure is 12.5-13.5 mm. If the result is different, you need to bend the rod antennae. Throttle adjustment involves determining the opening value of the throttle valve. It should be 14.5-15.5 mm. Otherwise, you will need to tighten the pneumatic drive rod.
Starter battery correction
At the second stage, you will need to adjust the operation of the starting device. The throttle lever on the secondary chamber is manually turned counterclockwise. It will close. The tip of the thrust lever should fit snugly against the axis of the primary chamber throttle valve.
At the very end there should be a starter rod. Otherwise, you will need to adjust its position. To do this, the rod is bent. This device in carburetor engines is fragile. If you apply too much force to it, the rod will break off.
Checking the pump accelerator and repairing it
You need to start checking by testing the functionality of the system. You need to collect in a beaker the fuel that will be generated during 10 cycles of operation of the throttle lever. From 5.2 to 8.7 cm³ of fuel should accumulate. If this is not the case, you need to clean the VAZ 2101 carburetor jets. To do this, bleed the pump. This will help clear clogged injectors. This procedure is performed about 10 times. Then the fuel is measured again.
If the purging procedure does not give the desired result, the accelerator will need to be completely replaced.
If the engine malfunctions at high speeds, you need to check the pump diaphragm. It could wear out. The fuel pump rod often wears out.
Adjusting the fuel system involves adjusting the idle speed at the final stage. You will need to warm up the engine for 15 minutes. Then the engine must be turned off. The quantity and quality screws are tightened until they stop. The first of them needs to be released 3 turns. The quality screw is unscrewed 5 turns.
The motor starts. The quantity screw sets the speed, which is about 800 per minute. Then the quality screw is slowly tightened. This way you can reduce the enrichment of the fuel mixture. This procedure is carried out until the speed begins to drop. After this, the quality screw must be unscrewed another half turn and fixed in this position.
Knowing how the carburetor adjustment procedure is carried out, you can do the job well yourself. The engine will operate stably, and the VAZ 2101 will operate in normal mode.

Carburetor settings
To adjust the carburetor on a VAZ-2101, it is necessary to first externally inspect the components on which the normal performance of the internal combustion power unit depends. The motorist should make sure that the spark plugs, the gap located between the electrodes, the distributor, the coil and the high-voltage wires are in good condition. Setting up the device in question is only possible if the motor is warmed up to an operating temperature of about 90 °C.
Before adjusting the VAZ-2101 carburetor, it is necessary to first visually inspect the components
Setting up the VAZ-2101 carburetor requires a special or standard repair kit. Although many qualified specialists recommend purchasing narrow-profile kits that would match a specific type of carburetor. For example, if a domestic car is equipped with Solex, then the repair kit, which is intended for DAAZ, will not be able to fully fulfill its duties. In fact, the cost of this set is not that huge, however, once you purchase the wrong tools, you will have to spend time purchasing and finding the missing elements.
A motorist who does not know how to adjust the carburetor on a VAZ-2101 should begin adjusting the device by disconnecting the cable connecting the accelerator pedal and the throttle valve drive. The pipe, which is located between the air filter and the breather, also needs to be dismantled.
To adjust the VAZ-2101 carburetor, a repair kit is required
Before adjusting the carburetor, you need to make sure that there is no vacuum in the hose (this connecting element is located between the adjustable device and the advance angle regulator). The next step is to regulate the quality of the mixture of air and fuel. The car owner must slowly “press” the screws one by one so that the power unit begins to shake a little. After this, everything should be done so that the motor begins to function as stably as possible. This manipulation will be facilitated by unscrewing the quality screws. However, at the time of regulation you should not make more than one revolution. Adjustment is carried out only by ear (even such a simple and imprecise method helps to adjust the device as accurately as possible). No less important is adjusting the idle speed of the VAZ-2101 carburetor.
A sharp opening of the throttle valve and its immediate closing can help in determining the correct setting. If the car is able to quickly gain speed, without delays or hesitations, the carburetor is well tuned. As a rule, the subsequent operation of the vehicle is a direct reflection of the setting of this device.
Adjusting and repairing the VAZ 2101 carburetor yourself
The normal operation of the engine depends on how well the fuel supply to the cylinders is adjusted. Not every motorist can make the correct carburetor settings. Since not everyone is well versed in the power system of a carburetor engine.
But if you have at least superficial knowledge, then making a rough adjustment will be easy. It’s better to entrust more subtle adjustments to professionals who are experienced in this matter.
A good way out of this situation is to independently study all the intricacies of tuning carburetors. This is relevant for cases where there is no competent craftsman nearby. You will need to understand the principles of operation of the VAZ 2101 carburetor in order to know the purpose of all the jets in the fuel supply system, since the quality of mixture formation directly depends on them.
Tuning the VAZ 2101 carburetor is necessary for your engine to function normally. Not only its power, efficiency, gasoline consumption, but also, most importantly, its service life depend on how the internal combustion engine operates. The good news is that the carburetor does not need frequent adjustments.
Clean all the channels, rinse it, install new jets, and then you just need to change the fuel and air filters on time to ensure the carburetor operates as correctly as possible. Unfortunately, spare parts on the market are not always of good quality. Therefore, from time to time some malfunctions may occur in the fuel injection system.
Kopek carburetor breakdowns
Now it’s worth considering what problems can occur in the carburetor. If suddenly the engine begins to operate unstably at idle, changes in crankshaft speed are observed, or the engine stalls if you do not press the accelerator pedal, there is no need to blame the carburetor for the troubles. In particular, this is relevant for those cases when such symptoms began to manifest themselves sharply, there were no prerequisites for this.
If a carburetor or some of its components suddenly fails, or its settings are lost, then the change in operation does not occur abruptly, but smoothly. Very often, the cause of floating idle speed is the solenoid valve, which is installed on the VAZ carburetor. If your car has a similar device in its design, then first of all you need to check it.
To do this, disconnect the wire that goes to it, and then apply plus to the valve contact from the battery. If the winding is working properly, a slight click will be heard. After this, the presence of voltage is checked on the wire that is connected to the solenoid valve. If there is no voltage, then there is damage to the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid valve.
Also, the symptoms described above may appear in cases where there is very large carbon deposits on the spark plug electrodes. As a result, the spark power is simply not enough to ignite the air-fuel mixture. If there is carbon deposits on the electrodes, then the carburetor itself should be blamed for this. The fact is that it supplies a lot of air-fuel mixture to the combustion chambers. The saddest reason for this is a burnt-out intake valve.
But don’t grab your head right away, first try to set the gasoline level in the VAZ 2101 carburetor. The float position must be adjusted correctly. Often the penny begins to stall and sneeze at high crankshaft speeds. The carburetor, as a rule, has nothing to do with it. The reason lies in the gasoline supply. The fuel pump diaphragm may already be worn out, but most often the fuel pump rod is worn out. You can read about it in a separate article.
Malfunctions that may precede carburetor adjustment
Adjusting the VAZ-2101 carburetor may be necessary even before the car owner can notice the first signs of a malfunction.
For example, unstable operation of the power unit at idle, changes in crankshaft speed, or regular “damping” of the engine are not always problems that arise from the carburetor.
The above device can only be blamed when such problems arose out of nowhere, without prerequisites.
For some reason, a failed carburetor or its assembly needs urgent adjustment, even if the changes did not occur too dramatically. As a rule, floating idle speed appears if there is a problem with the solenoid valve.
A motorist who does not know how to adjust the solenoid valve must disconnect the wire supplying this element and apply the “plus” to the valve contact via the battery. If the winding is functioning normally, a soft click will be heard at the moment of connection.
At the same time, you need to check the voltage that is on the wire connected to the electric valve. If there is no voltage, the wiring is damaged.
Most likely, such a break is located in the section of the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the valve.
Engine malfunctions are not always signs of the need for carburetor adjustment
The need to adjust the carburetor may also arise in a situation where there is a large amount of carbon deposits in the spark plug electrodes.
How to set up a carburetor
Before you start adjusting the penny carburetor, you need to make sure that all components that affect the normal functioning of the internal combustion engine are in good condition. Check the spark plugs, the gap between the electrodes, the distributor, the coil, and the high-voltage wires. You can adjust the carburetor on a VAZ 2101 car only at engine operating temperature (85..90 degrees).
But before you start making adjustments, be sure to purchase a repair kit for the VAZ 2101. Moreover, pay attention to the fact that this repair kit matches your carburetor. If Solex is installed, then you do not need to buy a repair kit for DAAZ. Of course, the price of this set is not very high, but if you buy the wrong one, you will have to run around a little, exchanging for the right one. Disconnect the cable that connects the accelerator pedal to the throttle valve drive. The pipe connecting the air filter housing to the breather must also be disconnected.
Make sure that there is no vacuum in the hose connecting the carburetor to the advance angle adjuster on the distributor. Now you need to adjust the quality of the mixture. Screw in the screws one at a time until the engine begins to shake slightly. Now we need to achieve normal and most stable operation. To do this, unscrew the quality screws one by one. Do not make more than one turn. This adjustment is purely by ear, but it is quite possible to normally adjust the carburetor of a penny in this way.
To determine how well the adjustment has been made, open the throttle sharply and then close it immediately. If the speed increases sharply, there are no delays, then the carburetor is adjusted correctly. But the further operation of the VAZ 2101 will show more accurately. Carefully monitor how much gasoline is consumed per hundred kilometers. From time to time, check the condition of the spark plugs; if there is carbon deposits on them, adjust the air supply to the carburetor of the VAZ 2101.
VAZ-2101 “Zhiguli” is a passenger car that was born in the Soviet years and gained great popularity. Many still adhere to this model to this day. First, let's figure out what a carburetor is. A carburetor is a kind of mechanism located on internal combustion engines and feeds it with air and gasoline. It is used to mix these components. But, as you know, progress does not stand still, and new devices were invented to replace the carburetor - injectors.
Adjusting the throttle drive
If this drive is incorrectly configured, the car's engine response drops and acceleration dynamics deteriorate. The setup is done with an assistant.
You will need the following tools: a screwdriver, an 8-mm open-end wrench, a flashlight, a ruler or a caliper.
- Turn down the “choke” (air damper drive) completely.
- Have your assistant press the gas pedal all the way to the floor. The throttle valve will open completely, as shown in the picture below, you can shine a flashlight into the first chamber. When you release the pedal, the damper should completely close the first chamber without any gaps. If there are gaps, then proceed to the next step.
- Next, we measure the length of the rod with a caliper; it should be exactly 8 cm. To adjust the length of the rod to the required size, rotate the tips by unscrewing the lock nuts.
After all these operations have been completed, put the rod in place and repeat the check. Nowadays, rods are made of low-quality plastic, which shrinks over time. Therefore, you need to check the operation of the traction after a week or two.
We looked at all the ways to adjust the carburetor yourself. We hope this article helped you, if you have any questions, ask them in the comments and we will definitely answer.
Idle speed adjustment
The idle system in the carburetor is the most unstable. Therefore, it needs to be adjusted from time to time. The idle speed control elements are 2 screws, one of which determines the composition of the mixture, and the second regulates its quantity.
The stroke adjustment must be carried out on a previously warmed-up engine and with adjusted gaps, which are located in the gas distribution mechanism. You should also check that the ignition timing is set correctly.
Step by step steps:
- Using screw 1, you need to set the crankshaft rotation speed to 820-900 min-1 using the stand tachometer.
- Using screw 2, it is necessary to achieve the CO concentration in the exhaust gases without going beyond 0.5-1.2%.
- Use screw 1 to restore the shaft speed to 820-900 min-1.
- Screw 2 needs to restore the CO concentration to 0.5-1.2%.
- To complete, press limit marks (plastic bushings) onto these screws and orient the slots of these bushings relative to the mounting lugs.
Problems that may arise when setting idle speed:
- There is no reaction from the engine to tightening the propeller (during tightening, the engine should gradually slow down and eventually stall). This sometimes happens if there is an excess of gasoline in the idle speed indicator. The reasons may be:
- very large jet XX;
- the solenoid valve or plug is not screwed in properly;
- The seat of the XX jet has a deformation in its structure or the jet itself is damaged.
Ways out of the situation are presented below. So, with the engine running smoothly at idle, remove the wire from the solenoid valve. When this action is performed, the engine will stop immediately. If this is exactly what happened, then most likely the XX jet is too large and does not suit you. The solution here is very easy - purchase and install a smaller one.
- If the engine continues to run, then most likely gasoline does not enter the XX nozzle, but goes by. You need to carry out the following manipulations, namely, unscrew the plug (solenoid valve) and examine your XX jet to see if it is damaged. If deformations are detected, there is no other way but to buy a new carburetor cover. If no deformations were found during your examination, put the jet on the valve, lubricate the O-ring with oil and tighten it with a wrench (tighten without much effort, it is advisable to tighten with a wrench using only one finger).
