Distant January: Before giving the car for repainting, I disassembled it. This was the impetus for repairing the wipers. What to do?

If the slowdown occurs mainly in winter, we recommend replacing the lubricant with Ciatim. This substance is not afraid of cold temperatures down to minus 60. Moreover, it is quite thick and adheres well to parts - one treatment lasts for a long time.
Remember that before lubrication, you should clean the moving elements from rust and degrease. It is also worth using Ciatim in the gearbox.
Experienced people advise to speed up the work of wipers:
- swap contact 53 with 53b;
- adjust the windshield wipers;
- make sure that the mass coming from the motor is holding well.
In the latter case, you need to clean not only the connection point, but also make sure that this wire is securely attached to the body.
It is worth, among other things, replacing the standard relay included in the wiper circuit with a device that makes it possible to adjust the pause between movements. This is done very simply. In the mounting block, the corresponding actuator is located in the top row (third from the right) - it is simply removed and a new one is inserted.
Wiper gear motor
When operating a car on rural roads, and not only that, the problem arises that the electric motor of the mechanism becomes clogged with dust and dirt. Of course, in such cases there is no doubt that normal operation of the wiper motor is out of the question. In this case, you need to clean the mechanisms from dust and dirt, rinse them, apply new lubricant and put everything back in place. When connecting the motor back, check the plugs for contamination; they may also oxidize and change color. In this case, it is better to unpin the plug and thoroughly clean each of the contacts and the housing itself.
Bad mass
The next common cause is a poor electrical system. The mass fastening is located on the lower bolt of the mechanism drive. There is a simple diagnostic method in this case:
- Turn on the wipers to maximum operating mode and remember their speed.
- Turn on the car's heater.
- If it is noticeable that the speed has decreased significantly, then the problem has been identified.

The driver moves the right steering column switch lever up from its original position to the second fixed position. Inside the switch, contacts “53a” (plus from the ignition switch) and “53” (output to the purifier gear motor) are closed. Next, the current flows through the gray wire through the fuse mounting block to one of the three brushes of the windshield wiper gear motor.
High speed of wipers
The driver moves the steering column switch further up, to the third (last) fixed position. In this case, contacts “53a” (plus from the ignition switch) and “53b” (output to the purifier gear motor) are closed. Next, the current flows through the gray-red wire, through the mounting block to the third (displaced from the geometric neutral) brush of the gearmotor.
Intermittent mode
The driver moves the steering column switch lever up from its original position to the second fixed position. In this case, contacts “53a” and “j”, as well as “53e” and “53” are closed. From contact “j” voltage is supplied to terminal “I” of the windshield wiper relay in the mounting block. The relay is activated. It closes contacts “15” and “S”. From contact “S” of the relay, the current flows again to the steering column switch and through its closed contacts “53e” and “53”, the gray wire, the mounting block is supplied to the side brush of the gearmotor. The relay periodically turns on and off (at a frequency of 14 times per minute), breaking and again closing the electrical circuit, thereby creating an intermittent operation of the brushes.
Notes and additions
When turning off the wipers, the driver moves the right steering column switch to the lower (fixed) position. In this case, contacts “53” and “53e” inside the switch remain closed and the current flows to the limit switch inside the gearmotor and through the fuse located here to the relay terminal “31v” in the mounting block. Then through its output “S” to the closed contacts “53” and “53e” in the steering column switch. Through them and the gray wire, current flows to the gear motor brush and its armature rotates at low speed. At the same time, inside the gearmotor, the cam presses the limit switch contact. The gearmotor is de-energized. The brushes make a couple of movements and stop in the lower position.
Freezing
Often in winter, on a cold car, you can encounter the effect that the wipers work slowly or hardly move. In this case, it is worth checking whether the wiper blades are frozen to the windshield. If everything is in order here, then the problem is in the trapezoid. The trapezoid joints freeze to each other either due to a large amount of dirt on them, or if there is not enough lubricant. To correct a similar problem, use the material written earlier and carry out a similar procedure.
Wiper relay
This problem does not occur very often, but it is still worth considering. If you use a standard component, then if the mechanism is used intensively, it may not withstand the load and fail after some time. In this case, it is better to install a relay with delay adjustment in the fuse box, which will help reduce the load. The relay in the mounting block is located at the top and third on the left; you can also recognize it by special markings in the form of a windshield and wiper. Even experienced mechanics will not be able to immediately tell why the wipers on a VAZ 2114 are working slowly; everything in this system needs to be inspected, taking into account the quality of spare parts for this brand of car. The windshield wiper kit type 33.5205 consists of an electric drive, arms and brushes. The movement of the windshield wiper blades is parallel. The windshield wiper connection diagram is shown in Fig. 9.21. Windshield wipers can be domestic or imported. Windshield wipers are interchangeable in connection and mounting dimensions. The gearmotors (electric motors with gearboxes) of these windshield wipers are also interchangeable, although they have some differences in design. The windshield wiper has three operating modes: the 1st and 2nd modes are constant (but with different speeds of movement of the blades), and the 3rd mode is with intermittent movement of the wiper blades. The windshield wiper electric motor is excited by permanent magnets, three-brush, with two rotation speeds. To protect the electric motor from overloads when the brushes freeze to the glass, there is high resistance to their movement, or when the windshield wiper mechanism gets stuck, a reusable thermo-bimetallic fuse is installed in the wiper. For imported gearmotors, the fuse is installed under the gearbox cover on the limit switch panel, and for domestic gearmotors, the fuse is located on the wiper drive bracket. The intermittent operation of the windshield wiper is ensured by an electronic relay type 52.3747 installed in the mounting block. This relay also turns on the windshield wiper motor (low speed) when the windshield washer is turned on. A relay of type 526.3747 without terminal “K” is installed in the mounting block 2114-3722010. Its characteristics are the same as those of relay 52.3747. This relay can also be installed in the previous mounting block. On some VAZ 2108 and VAZ 2109 vehicles, tailgate glass wipers can be installed along with washer solenoid valves. The windshield wiper connection diagram is shown in Fig. 9.22. The tailgate glass wiper consists of a gear motor, a lever and a brush. Laying the lever with a brush on the right in the direction of travel of the car. A thermobimetallic fuse is installed in the windshield wiper gear motors to protect against overloads. For a windshield wiper, when the gearmotor is loaded with a torque of 0.49 N•m (0.05 kgf•m), a supply voltage of 14 V and an ambient temperature of (25±10)°C, the number of double strokes of the gearmotor shaft should be (50±5) min, and current consumption is no more than 2 A.
USEFUL ADVICE Over time, the inserts of the windshield wiper blades lose their elasticity due to the aging of the rubber and the brushes do not fit tightly to the glass, leaving uncleaned areas during operation. Temporarily, before purchasing new windshield wiper blades, you can try to restore the functionality of the old blades. Soak your windshield wiper blades in clean gasoline for a minute, then wash thoroughly with soap and water. Often after this the brushes become like new again.
