Tuning UAZ 469: where to start?

Structurally, the car is very similar to an American jeep, but due to the obsolescence of the concept, it is significantly inferior in performance characteristics. The UAZ 469 is a strong, utilitarian SUV, but not comfortable enough for daily use. It is with increasing the level of comfort in the car that UAZ tuning begins - the most popular modifications are:

• Suspension modernization - despite the initially high ground clearance, most UAZ 469 owners install additional spacers. The price of a new spring suspension on a UAZ 469 will cost around 12-15,000 rubles, a less load-bearing spring suspension - 6-7,000, spacers for all 4 racks - 3-3.5,000. The choice between spring and spring suspension is required taking into account the operating mode: the springs will provide greater off-road handling, springs - load capacity and rigidity;
• Installation of sound insulation - the car was originally planned as an army SUV, so the stock installation of sound insulation is not provided. UAZ car tuning includes the following services:

Power steering

The effect of using hydraulic booster cannot be exaggerated. It helps reduce the physical stress on the driver when driving off-road by 2–3 times. This is the best tuning for UAZ. This is especially noticeable when driving for a long time in difficult road conditions. The original power steering kit includes all the necessary parts.

Algorithm for performing the work:

1. We remove the steering wheel.
2. Remove the steering column along with the universal joint.
3. Unscrew the nut and disconnect the steering rod from the bipod.
4. Unscrew the 3 steering gear bolts.
5. We place the bipod from the kit on the shaft of the new steering mechanism with power steering and tighten the nut that secures it.
6. We install the new steering mechanism in place of the old one and secure it with 3 bolts.
7. We connect the bipod with the steering rod. Tighten and cotter the fastening nut.
8. We cut off the bracket that mounts the old steering column; it will interfere with the installation of the new one.
9. We put the plastic attachment from the kit on the new steering column and secure it with glue.
10. We install the contact screw and the horn bushing from the old column into the nozzle.
11. We fasten the metal column support from the kit to the car body with M6 bolts.
12. We put a rubber ring, washer and castle nut on the new column, then insert it into the support and secure it with a stepladder.
13. We insert the propeller shaft from the kit between the column and the steering mechanism. We combine its hole with the wedge from the kit. We determine the entrance hole (the widest one) and drive the wedge in with light blows of a hammer through a drift.
14. We put regular and spring washers on the threads of the wedge and lock it with a nut with a cotter pin.
15. We fasten the splines of the other end of the new shaft in the same way as the old cardan was fastened.
16. We finally attach the steering column. The length between the shaft joints should be 30 cm.
17. Tighten the castle nut and install the steering wheel.
18. We connect the wires and adjust the position of the horn bushing.

The steering mechanism has been replaced, you can continue installing the power steering parts.

Installing the power steering pump and reservoir

Procedure:

• Remove the cooling system fan, crankshaft pulley and drive belt.
• We unscrew the pump bolts and attach the radiator fan to the water pump hub using the spacer from the kit and longer bolts.
• We install the power steering pump pulley in place of the crankshaft pulley so that the ignition mark faces backwards, in the direction of travel of the car. We secure the new pulley using longer bolts.
• Unscrew the bolts and remove the fuel filter along with the bracket. In its place we install the power steering bracket.
• Unscrew the top nut securing the pump and install the bracket from the power steering kit on the stud with the eye facing backwards. Then tighten the nut back.
• We attach the pump with the bracket to the bracket and insert a stop with a tip and a lock nut between the bracket and the bracket. We connect the bracket and the bar with the bolt from the kit.
• We put the power steering belt on the pulleys and adjust its tension. To do this, we achieve parallelism of the rotation axes of the pulleys, limiting the bending of the bracket by turning the stop out of the tip. Normal belt deflection should be in the range of 12 – 17 mm when pressed by hand. It should be placed perpendicular to the plane of the pulleys.
• After the belt tension is adjusted, finally tighten all the pump mounting bolts and lock the stop and tip with a lock nut.
• Install the fuel filter into the square hole.

Improved power steering for model 469

The pump is installed, after that you need to:

• drill 3 holes in the left mudguard of the engine compartment, attach a bracket to the mudguard and use a clamp, bolts and nuts to secure the tank to it;
• connect the reservoir with the pump and steering mechanism with polymer hoses;
• pour multi-grade transmission oil into the system;
• turn the steering wheel in both directions until it stops (hanging the front wheels) to remove air from the system;
• start the UAZ 469 engine, check the operation of the power steering and, if necessary, add fluid to the tank.

If the oil in the tank foams when the engine is running, it means the system is leaking. Stop the engine, seal the hoses and bleed the system again.

Tuning UAZ 469 with your own hands

To improve the technical characteristics of the UAZ 469, some motorists are upgrading it. Tuning the UAZ 469 for hunting and fishing can be done with your own hands. This does not require specialized education; minimal technical knowledge is sufficient. There are several advantages to upgrading your car yourself:

• Functionality. Each motorist carries out tuning based on personal preferences. After modernization, it is possible to obtain a car that is suitable in its functionality to the requirements of a certain person.

It should be noted that covering the ceiling in the UAZ 469 is a complex job, since it will be necessary to make additional inserts into the material, making it denser by sewing it on. The material is cut into small squares. This will give it additional rigidity. Thus, the future ceiling of the car will not sag and will stretch well.

As for the trunk, the UAZ Hunter is equipped with this compartment in the form of auto vinyl. Its tuning and the ceiling of an all-metal vehicle provide for their covering by analogy with the UAZ Bukhanka. Fabric curtains are often sewn onto the rear window, and leather covers (preferably black) are placed on the side windows.

A glove compartment is installed between the seats in front. You can do it yourself using improvised means. To do this you will need boards or plastic, nails (screws), a wood saw, and glue. It is better to buy such a box as a finished product in a furniture showroom or auto shop. The interior of the military model provides for the installation of such a box in order to create a place for the radio.

In the standard analogue, this place for the stereo system is located at the top, in the front. For this purpose, a special box is made, which is lined with leatherette on top. In this case, thin foam rubber is placed to give the structure relief. A rear view mirror is attached to it below. You can install a monitor with a DVD player on the front panel of the car.

The UAZ Hunter interior is equipped with a modern steering wheel made in an original design. For the 469 model, steering wheel tuning is carried out using auto vinyl and foam rubber. The door trims are sheathed with the same materials.

It is necessary to take into account that the military UAZ has a trunk divided into 2 parts:

• external;
• internal.

The partition can be mounted from plywood. The top is sheathed in the same way as the ceiling. In any case, it is recommended to sew car covers as a backup option. You can do this yourself or with the help of experienced professionals. At the same time, the dimensions of the seats are taken and their design features are taken into account.

UAZ 469 interior reupholstery

Also among owners of a popular domestic SUV, a fairly popular area of ​​internal tuning is changing the upholstery of some interior elements or the entire upholstery, including the ceiling, side panels and doors (sometimes the dashboard and steering wheel). In this case, various modern and classic materials are used for upholstery: fabric, Alcantara or leather.

Tuning interior electrical wiring

The simplest and safest way of tuning is body lifting or UAZ body lift , which is performed using spacers between the body and frame of the car. But suspension play affects the stability of the car, increasing its center of gravity, thereby reducing roll and making the car prone to rollover. Tuning UAZ 469 for hunting and fishing

You can increase the distance from the frame to the bridges by installing extended spring mounting earrings, additional sheets, and specialized spacers between the bridge and the spring. Increasing the distance between the axles and the vehicle frame involves the use of shock absorbers with increased stroke of the operating rod. Violation of this rule will lead to incorrect operation of the shock absorbers and their rapid failure. You can use shock absorbers specifically designed for the UAZ-469 suspension lift or install shock absorbers from cars of other brands.

Increasing wheel size

To improve cross-country ability, some car owners install wheels of increased diameter. This increases the vehicle's ground clearance. For UAZ 469, wheels from cars of other brands are used.

Installing cylinders of increased diameter requires trimming the wheel arches. This is necessary so that during normal operation of the suspension the wheel does not touch the arch. To improve aesthetic properties, specialized moldings are installed in place of the cut.

Self-production involves the use of a welding machine. Any type of welding designed to connect metal parts of the appropriate thickness is suitable.
