Every driver of a vehicle knows that good visibility is the key to safety on the road. It is thanks to the so-called wipers that the rear and windshield are kept clean in adverse weather conditions. But everything eventually wears out and needs to be replaced. This happens with car windshield wipers when they stop performing their full function. An experienced car owner knows that rear window wipers wear out much faster, and accordingly, they need to be replaced more often. It's not difficult to do this yourself. At the same time, you need to ensure that the purchased model of the product fits your car...
Types of rear window wipers
The windshield wiper device is a metal arm connected to a rubber surface. The brush is fixed on the lever with a special holder with a plug.
- Frame brushes are equipped with movable elements called rocker arms. They fix the cleaning surface to the windshield. However, such wipers have a main drawback - hinged joints. Precipitation can cause the windshield wipers to malfunction. Also, a loose fit of the rubber element to the glass surface reduces the quality of the wipers.
- Frameless windshield wipers have a spring, so the rubber surface fits as tightly as possible to the windshield. This promotes better glass cleaning and increases service life. A distinctive feature of such wipers is their curved shape. You can see frameless models on many cars. They look good, do not reduce the aerodynamics of the body, are not as susceptible to icing and do not interfere with visibility. But there is one drawback - it is impossible to change only the rubber band on the brush, so you have to do a complete replacement. Also, in most cases, a frameless windshield wiper is selected for the appropriate vehicle based on parameters such as the angle of the windshield and the length of the blade itself. Attention to car owners who want to replace the rear frame wiper with a frameless one: despite the fastening in the form of a simple hook, such a replacement is almost impossible. The reason lies in the fact that the leash is located very close to the glass, which does not allow installing a frameless model, which is higher at the ends than the frame one.
- Plastic rear windshield wipers are essentially blades with a smooth plastic frame. A wiper of this type is installed using a special mount on a plastic leash, as if being its continuation. This type of model needs to be selected more carefully to ensure it fits exactly.
Rear brush manufacturers
Rear wipers are made by almost all major windshield wiper manufacturers. Frame windshield wipers are produced by all manufacturers; they are usually supplemented with blade adapters from the existing range for windshields. Not everyone produces brushes with a specific fastening - frameless and plastic: Bosch
produces more than 70 types of special rear brushes. At the same time, Bosch produces frame rear brushes under separate articles. Plastic and frame ones are marked Bosch Rear xxxH, where xxx is the brush code. The rear frameless brushes are labeled Bosch Aerotwin Rear AxxxH.
The second largest market coverage is the American company Trico
. They have specialized in windshield wipers for over 100 years and have a large line of rear blades. All rear brushes belong to the ExactFit series. Frame brushes with a hook are marked Trico ExactFit EFxx0, where xx is the length of the brush in centimeters. Plastic and frameless rear wipers (and some framed ones with a special mount) are labeled Trico ExactFit EXxxy, where xx is the length of the blade in centimeters. The total number of articles for EX series rear brushes is about 30.
and SWF (brand owned by Valeo)
They produce a smaller range than Bosch and Trico, but they also cover the basic needs of the market with frame, plastic (Valeo Silencio Rear and SWF Standard Rear) and frameless (Valeo Silencio Flat OE Rear and SWF VisioFlex OE Rear) brushes.
Japanese company Denso
produces a wide range of frame brushes (Denso DM-xxx, where xxx is the length in mm.) and several plastic Denso Rear (DRA-xxx and DRB-xxx, DRC-xxx where xxx is the length in mm.)
Options for replacing rear wipers
If your car's rear brush is worn out or malfunctioning , you can:
- replace it with a new original one,
- replace with an analogue of the original,
- Just replace the cleaning tape.
To replace the rear brush with an original one , we simply purchase it at any auto store or place an order there and install it. As for the selection of non-original ones, many of the manufacturers can offer alternative models. In this case, most likely, the design will need to be slightly modified in order to install it properly. Sometimes, only the rubber part of the brush wears out. Then you can simply replace this cleaning tape with a new one.
On different models of cars, rear wipers are installed differently. Therefore, there is no single installation method. But everything is identical.
Here is one way to remove the rear wiper blade and replace the wiper.
We remove the cover from the mounting axis of the windshield wiper arm, which is attached with latches. Then we lift the leash from the glass. At the same time, we turn the wiper itself perpendicular to the glass until the latch reaches the stop. Now carefully remove the brush from the clamp. To install a new one, we do the same thing, only exactly the opposite. The elastic band can be changed simply, without removing the structure from the leash. To do this, you just need to pull out the rubber band along with the spokes from the central part of the windshield wiper. A new rubber band is attached in the reverse order.
Non-original and original
In the automotive industry, “original” refers to spare parts that are produced under the brand of the automaker. For example: Windshield wiper blades produced by Valeo or Bosch under their own brand are “non-original”. But the box with the BMW inscription most likely contains the same Valeo or Bosch brushes - and these are already “original”, but several times more expensive. Car manufacturers order windshield wiper systems from well-known manufacturers of automotive components and sell them under their own brand, naturally at a significantly higher price. For most cars you can buy a SWF, Valeo, Bosch or Trico rear wiper, but some models have such specific rear wipers that only the “original” blades will do. Examples of such cars: Honda Pilot since 2008, Opel Antara
Why are car wipers needed?
Windshield wiper blades have another popular name - “wipers”. With their help, the car driver has the opportunity to drive his vehicle in any weather. Replacing windshield wiper blades will be discussed below. Almost every driver has encountered problems driving in rainy weather. Especially if a car is driving towards you at high speed, spraying mud on your windows. In order to clearly see the road, scientists developed car wipers.
Replacement indicator
Today, modern wiper models are equipped with a special mark that allows you to determine when the windshield wiper blades need to be replaced. Most often, such products have a special mark in the form of a square or circle on the body of the model itself. It is usually applied with special paint, so when installing such a cleaner, first remove the protective film from it.
As a result of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and bad weather conditions, the paint will change color, which will indicate the need to replace the wiper. In this case, such an indicator will not respond to mechanical damage and cleaning liquids.
Signs of Wiper Blade Wear
Specific signs will help you understand whether your windshield wiper blades need to be replaced. Pay attention to the following points:
- During cleaning, stripes and dirty stains appear on the glass;
- large unrefined areas;
- the appearance of vertical and narrow stripes on glass.
Replacing windshield wiper blades yourself is quite quick. Many car owners are afraid of breaking something, and in vain. In fact, it is very easy to remove and replace the wipers yourself. You will only need a little free time and a minimum amount of knowledge and skills.
Replacing windshield wiper blades involves removing the old products and installing new ones. A very important replacement rule is to buy a product model that is ideal for your car. After all, very often different “wipers” differ in length. Be sure to take this parameter into account when purchasing.
2How to remove the rear windshield wiper blades?
The cause of a rear wiper failure may be faulty blades. If you replace them with new ones, the windshield wiper will, as before, effectively perform its functions.
To quickly make a replacement, you need to understand the design of the device. The brushes have in their design:
- Wire attachment point. Usually this element is removable and does not interfere with the task.
- Clamping system. The longer the rear wiper blade, the more pressure blocks there should be.
- Brush - rubber band. It has various shapes, the choice of which depends on the type of rear window.
There are also several options for attaching the brushes to the wiper. They need to be distinguished in order to quickly remove the device.
The brush can be attached using:
- Grooves that allow you to snap the structure into place.
- Straight head (narrow or wide).
- Side socket.
- Hook.
- Mounts with oscillation.
Before you start work, you need to cover the car windows with an old rag. This way you can avoid scratches. You need to take a flathead screwdriver and install the holder at an angle of 45 degrees. Only in this position can you remove the old wiper blade. Then you need to press a special latch and the element can be easily removed.
The procedure for removing the rear wiper will not take much time, especially if you have the skills to use the tools. You can also quickly install it back by performing the same manipulations in reverse order. It is important to monitor the functioning of this device. If the first malfunctions are noticed, then you need to immediately resort to repairs. Otherwise, at the most crucial moment, the driver may be left without the necessary visibility and drive “blindly.”
Step-by-step replacement instructions
To replace the wipers you should follow these steps:
- The lever is placed vertically and then removed from the glass itself. Do this very carefully. After all, if it jumps out, there is a risk of breaking the machine glass.
- After the first step, open the cap by pulling the brush down. Remember to hold the holder very firmly while performing this step.
- Now take the new product prepared in advance and put it on the knitting needle, while closing the plug itself. Try to level it as much as possible by pulling it down.
That's all, the new windshield wiper blade is installed, so you can safely drive the car and not worry about poor visibility.
1Methods of the procedure
There are several ways to cope with the task. You need to choose the one you need based on the make of the car and the experience of the technician. The procedure may be based on:
- Removing the wiper from the top of the trunk lid.
- Removing the motor-gearbox from inside the trunk lid.
In order to carry out the first plan, you need to take the keys “10” and “24”, as well as a flat-head screwdriver.
First, you need to take a flat-head screwdriver in your hands and carefully lift the cover of the device lever mount. Using a “10” key, you need to unscrew the lever mount and remove the lever itself. Then, using the same screwdriver, you need to remove the black ring - the seal. It is important to analyze the appearance of this spare part. If the ring is worn out, it needs to be replaced. A soured fastener can also cause a breakdown.
You also need to carefully inspect the teeth of the motor rod - gearbox. Their poor condition is a likely cause of breakdown and future problems with the wiper.
The second option involves the following actions:
- Open the trunk lid, remove the plastic trim clips and remove the trim itself.
- Disconnect the wires from the gear motor.
- Use a key to unscrew the fasteners (there are two of them) and remove the motor-gearbox.
When you need to install the wiper back, the same algorithm is used, but in reverse. You will have to install new clips so that the casing will hold better.
How to remove frameless wipers
Before removing the frame wipers, thoroughly clean their mountings. Only after this can the device itself be dismantled. You will have to do the following:
- carefully unscrew the mounting pins;
- now take out the brush body;
- carefully remove the rubber plugs of the bolts;
- unscrew the bolts yourself.
Pay special attention to the process of unscrewing the bolts. This must be done extremely carefully, because most often they are connected directly to the motor that sets them in motion. If you accidentally damage this mechanism, then even the highest quality and most expensive wiper models will be useless.
Installation of new frameless products
Replacing frameless windshield wiper blades is a procedure that must be performed with extreme caution, so for the first time it is recommended to watch how professionals will perform the replacement, and only then do it yourself. But still, if you decide to do it yourself, then follow these steps:
- First, you will have to install new rubber gaskets under the wiper bases.
- Now attach the base of the previously prepared new product to the tetrahedral pin.
- Next, seal the connections using the washer that you removed when dismantling the previous wiper.
- Finally, screw in the housing mounting bolt.
Purchase, installation and connection of a rear wiper.
I set out to install and connect this device, I consider it one of the necessary equipment in a car. My configuration did not include a broom for the rear window, apparently the Japanese did not consider this device necessary. And I really realized that for me this thing is necessary, if in the winter it still somehow endures, then in the coming summer of 2012 it is definitely not enough, since in the winter you can turn on the heating and all the ice will melt, then in the summer in the rain you can really use the heating as then, out of the blue, the thought pops into my head, “I wish I could turn on the wiper on the rear window now”! Yes, and in winter the melted snow frost, I think, also needs to be brushed off with something, in the best case it’s a rear window wiper! In the worst case, accept it, or go out to wipe the thawed glass. So I have matured on this topic. After reading the information on the Internet, I realized that hardly anyone would undertake to drill a technical hole for a broom in standard glass, even from master glaziers. Ordering the motor itself with the wiper mechanism from Japan costs 15,000, plus 10,000 glass, it’s definitely not a problem, it’s better to move without this device than to pay such money. Well, in general, it’s not my destiny to buy everything new, my family won’t understand, and I myself would never go down this path. Accordingly, the only option is a donor. I started looking for a donor, the only option was Drom., there are no such private advertisements, if through companies, then only on order from Japan, which definitely does not suit me. After three months of looking at Droma, a miracle happened, a donor “shifter” Iriska Verossa, 2001, eggplant, location Ussuriysk was found. I consider myself lucky, since it’s really difficult to find a donor with a broom for the rear window, and at a reasonable price. I immediately called the owner named “Maxim”; he seems to have his own office in Ussuriysk, “Tuning25”. I thought that Max would charge me around 15,000 for a glass with a broom, so I’ll definitely look again in Drome, only in terms of time it could take an eternity! To my question what is the price tag, the normal answer is not from a huckster, but from a reasonable person - generally 5000 tr. glass along with a wiper, a motor, a guitar (the handle on the left under the broom control wheel), plus a relay and a hose for powering the broom nozzle with water. In general, there was a problem and I immediately applied for it on Max’s savings card. After 10 days everything arrived, although I paid three more pieces for the road, the company insured my goods so as not to break them in a wooden crate, they hid them, along the way the wood was selected based on the price, either Oak or Ash, but oh well, the main thing is that everything arrived intact and in good condition quality, for which many thanks to Max, I think that I was really lucky with the donor and his owner! Having received the goods, I immediately went to the service center to remove the old glass and install a new one, the price was 2 pieces. Having installed the glass with the existing technical hole for the wiper, there was nothing else to do but start attaching the wiper itself to the glass and embed the wiper motor into the rear shelf. It takes two days and the wiper and motor are fixed. Of course, there was enough hassle, but once you took it on, you had to do it, the main problem was when inserting under the rear window from the trunk into the metal shelf of the wiper motor itself, it was necessary to correctly measure and adjust everything so that the motor did not stand up crookedly, so it would then move itself broom But everything turned out fine; I fastened the motor with two self-tapping screws and one bolt into its standard mounting points with the metal shelf in which the rear speakers are fixed (well, in general, you understood me how I fastened it, where I crashed in and attached it), they hold it dead. Accordingly, having installed this device, I had to modernize the rear interior stop; it was moved 3 cm back, which did not affect its quality and functionality. All that remains is to carry out the wiring and connect the guitar to the steering wheel (steering column switch) and all the wiper wiring, plus supplying water to the nozzle, I think that for a competent electrician this will not be difficult. I'll post a photo report later! I laid out the removed old glass on Drome. Dear forum users, if anyone suddenly needs a standard Japanese rear window in perfect condition, let me know! I am attaching his photo. I was tormented, so to speak, with summing up the results after installing the new glass, namely, the master glaziers installed the rear glass with sealant, fixed it with Chinese tape, saying that let the glass hold on the tape for a day, but it did hold in the heat for a day, began to wipe off the remnants of the tape, after it removal, that’s where it all started - this Chinese glue began to smear on the paint, and I scrubbed it with vodka, then with alcohol for 2 light days together with my wife, nothing helped, it just smeared more, with some kind of brown tint, I was really worried, it didn’t I guess I ruined the paint on the car, I think I got it, on the internet they didn’t offer anything to wipe it off with kerosene and gasoline, but I was afraid to scrub it with these solvents, I think the paint could come off, or the varnish would definitely dissolve on the paint, until I read on the internet for White- Spirit. I bought it and tried it and it’s a miracle! everything worked without much effort! And so, the result of the monetary investment in the broom; 5000 rubles the kit itself, it includes; (rear window with a hole for a broom, broom (rear wiper), broom installation mechanism (fastening to the glass - internal, external), motor, relay, water hose + road 3000 rub. + 2000 rub. installation of glass in the service + 2350 rub. washer reservoir with two modes of motor operation (for supplying fluid to the front and rear wipers, the price of the reservoir includes delivery, the reservoir itself is 1500 rubles and the road is 850 rubles) + 2000 rubles for the work of an electrician, and of course the time spent on this whole epic — 3 months (I couldn’t find the original washer reservoir I needed for a long time).
conclusions
So, why do you need to replace your windshield wiper blades? Toyota or any other car model needs this procedure regularly. Such actions can reduce the risk of traffic accidents in bad weather. Experts recommend replacing them once a year or immediately after you notice that the wipers have begun to perform their duties poorly.
Changing windshield wiper blades for the front and rear windows is very simple. In the first case, you just need to follow the general instructions. And in the second, take into account the individual characteristics of your “iron friend”. It will be a little more difficult to cope with frameless products, but nothing is impossible here. A little patience, effort and caution - and you will quickly complete the task. Change your wipers regularly and you will be able to fully enjoy driving your car in any weather conditions.
Replacing windshield wiper blades is a question that will sooner or later arise before every driver. Find out how to remove windshield wiper blades, how to replace them and prevent breakdowns in the article below.
How to install new wiper blades
Once you've prepared for work, it's time to start replacing the brushes:
- Lift the lower arm from the windshield.
Remember that the lever must be installed perpendicular to the windshield; - Unhook the worn windshield wiper blade.
The cleaning element is secured with a small plastic clip. Removing the tool is very simple - just gently press on the holder. After this, unhook the cleaning element from the metal handle. Remember that on some models the brushes are secured with a latch rather than a hook; - Secure the new windshield wiper blade.
Insert a new brush into the same end of the metal frame from which you removed the worn-out tool. You need to secure the cleaning element very carefully until you hear a characteristic click. After this, place the tool back on the car windshield; - Replace the tool on the second windshield wiper.
Don't forget that cleaning tools come in different sizes, so you need to be very careful when installing them.
By replacing the cleaning elements, you will ensure that your wipers work well. Thanks to this, the windshield will remain clean, and the driver will have an excellent view of the road.
Every car owner knows that a windshield wiper blade is an important and indispensable part of any car. The safety of the driver and passengers depends to some extent on the quality of this product. So, in order to minimize the risk of getting into a traffic accident, you need to thoroughly clean your car windows.
When do brushes need to be replaced?
Everyone knows what “wipers” are - this is a special device in the form of a lever and a brush for cleaning the windshield and sometimes the rear window. They can be framed or frameless. In the first option, these are moving parts that hold the cleaning surface on the wind window.
Glass cleaning mechanism
Unfortunately, this species is quite delicate because it is vulnerable to snow and rain, which eventually turns into ice and damages the frame surface. In addition, the cleaning part does not fit tightly to the surface, and therefore does not clean well enough.
What are wipers and when should they be changed?
Windshield wipers are a device in which a metal arm is connected to a rubber wiper surface . The wiper blade is secured to the lever with a special holder with a plastic plug. They come in two varieties: framed and frameless.
Frame brushes have moving parts called rocker arms. They hold the cleaning surface on the windshield. The fundamental disadvantage of such “wipers” is the presence of hinged joints, which are vulnerable to the ingress of snow and ice, which disables the wipers. In addition, the rubber brush often does not adhere tightly to the glass, which makes its work ineffective.
Wiper frame design
Frameless wipers have a spring instead of rocker arms, which presses the blade to the surface of the windshield. Such windshield wipers look more organic in appearance, clean the glass better and do not wear out so quickly. You can recognize them by the characteristic curve of their shape. Windshield wipers of this type are installed on most modern cars and have the following advantages:
- They look much better.
- Can be used on glass of any curvature;
- They do not impair the aerodynamic properties of the body.
- Less sensitive to icing.
- Does not interfere with visibility when folded
Frameless design wiper
At the same time, it is not possible to replace only the rubber part in such “wipers”; you will have to change the whole thing. Often, a frameless windshield wiper needs to be selected for a specific car model based on the length of the blade and the curvature of the windshield.
Instructions for removing and replacing wipers
It is very easy to replace used material, and you can do it yourself. The only thing that is important to do is to buy a new part that is the same size as the old one. After all, wipers often differ in length from each other and this is also important to take into account.
Dismantling occurs in stages:
- The lever is placed vertically and removed from the windshield. It is important to hold it carefully so as not to injure it. If it pops out, it may damage the glass.
- Now you need to open the holder cap and pull the brush down, while holding the holder firmly.
- After this, you need to take the previously stored part, put it on the knitting needle and close the cap. Now pull it down, leveling it out. Thus, the operation is completed and you can proceed with another window cleaner. It is filmed in exactly the same way (the author of the video is TheBrandConnect).
Features of replacing rear wipers
There are some car models on which it would also be a good idea to install rear window wipers. The installation pattern on the rear windows is quite different from the installation of the glass cleaner on the front windows. In the case of installing rear wipers, it is impossible to say how to change the wipers, because all cars are different and the approach to them is individual. As an example, we can take the usual Lada Kalina station wagon.
- There is a fastening nut on the wiper, and above it there is a protective element. This metal cap must be lifted up.
- Then take a 10mm wrench and, carefully, so as not to drop the washer under it, unscrew the nut. Now turn the device a little and carefully pull it towards you. It will come off without any problems. After this, you can remove the mechanism to clean the windows.
- Now, on the dismantled device, you need to pull the part and use a screwdriver to loosen the latch that holds the part to the lever. You can replace it in the same way as replacing front windshield wipers. When buying brushes, you need to pay attention to the bend of the brush, because even this affects the quality of cleaning.

Replacing windshield wiper rubber bands on Toyota Prado 150
Due to frequent use, the rubber bands of a windshield wiper wear out quite quickly. You can replace the scraper yourself. The procedure consists of several steps.
To remove the brush:
- Turn the ignition switch to ON mode and turn on the rear wiper switch. The windshield wiper motor will not operate while the window or tailgate is open.
- When the wiper moves to a vertical position (27-390) that is convenient for removal, turn off the ignition.
- Raise the wiper arm, making sure it is not in the way of the door spoiler.
- Gently lift the brush until it clicks to release the grip.
To remove the Prado 150 rear wiper blade from the lever (see video), pull it to the left.
To remove the rubber scraper, lift and pull it out by the protruding end. To avoid breaking the gripper and support plates, do not pull too hard on the wiper. Remove the support plates from the brush.
To insert a new rubber band:
- Install the support plates. It is important to ensure their correct position when installing.
- From the front end of the brush, thread the rubber band towards the other end using the second gripper.
- Push the scraper through the grip so that the end of the rubber protrudes beyond the plug.
As a final step, move the scraper to the front end of the gripper.
To install the brush in place, place it back on the lever by pushing it towards the right side of the car body. Then the gripper is engaged.
When replacing the rear wiper on the TLK Prado 150 (see video), be careful and do not use excessive force so as not to break the grip.
