Let's look at how to properly lower the Granta Sedan.

  1. We place the car on a flat platform, secure the rear row of wheels with wheel chocks, and activate the parking brake lever.
  2. Jack up the front part (side) of the car and remove the wheels.
  3. Unscrew the upper and lower fastenings of the front shock absorber assembly and disconnect it from the hub. We remove it from the wheel arch.
  4. We disassemble the front strut module into its component parts: shock absorber, spring, support bearing, bowl, nuts.
  5. In place of the standard spring, install a new one (short one). Depending on the wishes of the owner, the spring height will be 30 mm, 50 mm, 70 mm.

If the owner does not pursue any specific goals when tuning, it is enough to limit the size to 30 or 50 mm. When choosing the specified parameters, there is no need to replace the standard shock absorber or insert additional rubber spacers under the support bearing mount.

We assemble the structure in reverse order.

Who are the competitors and who are the buyers?

Lada Granta Cross will have only three trim levels: Classic, Comfort and Luxe. And they are unique compared to what the regular station wagon version of the model offers, that is, it is impossible to immediately identify the correct price difference. For example, the Classic cross-version already has a climate system, electrically adjustable mirrors, height adjustment of the driver's seat, and exterior mirrors with a turn indicator. Plus a unique interior trim, a plastic body kit and 15-inch alloy wheels. Let us remind you that the most affordable version of Granta Cross will cost 554,900 rubles. “RG” has already written in more detail about the car’s configurations.

The main competitors of the Lada Granta Cross in the Russian market are Renault Sandero Stepway and Kia Rio X-Line. The new product, as stated at the presentation, wins, firstly, in price, secondly, in the presence of some options (Granta Cross has climate control, while its competitors have air conditioning), secondly, in the cost of maintenance, thirdly, in terms of the costs of purchasing and installing accessories (for comparison, the trunk and roof box were taken).

The buyer audience consists almost entirely of men - they, according to the automaker's expectations, will account for at least 90% of sales. These are people with average income: employees, specialists, middle managers, workers. The average age of the buyer is 42 years.

The market is still experiencing a crossover boom, and manufacturers are happy to indulge the customer’s desire to have a taller car. And it cannot be said that AvtoVAZ made a mistake in this case. Judge for yourself, the predecessor - Lada Kalina Cross - sold 7,539 copies in 2021, which is slightly less than the result of the regular version - 7,751 cars (RG's own data). And this is with a price difference of about 40 thousand rubles.

Now the budget cross-station wagon will have even more chances to please the buyer: increased cross-country ability, plastic linings, a bright interior with a finish that differs from the usual Granta and a new appearance, made in accordance with the precepts of Steve Mattin and the current chief designer of Lada.

Option #2: Installing a complete suspension kit

The process is similar to above:

  1. After hanging the car and removing the wheel, unscrew the fastenings of the shock absorbers, hub, ball joint tip, suspension arm, and silent blocks.
  2. We remove the parts one by one, installing new sets.
  3. We complete the assembly, the ground clearance is lowered by 3 - 7 cm.

Note to the driver! Service center technicians do not recommend installing the air suspension on the Lada Granta yourself in “garage” conditions. Due to the complexity of the design, the work must be carried out by professionals. Subsequently, quality assurance will be provided.

Disadvantages of lowered suspension on Grant

  • limited vehicle operation area;
  • mandatory presence of a smooth road surface, absence of gravel, crushed stone, coarse and medium-sized stones;
  • restrictions on the number of transported cargo and passengers;
  • frequent need for technical inspection and maintenance;
  • premature failure of air suspension elements during frequent use in winter.

How best to make an understated Grant:

  • seek qualified assistance from service station specialists;
  • install components only under warranty;
  • exclude handicraft repairs.

3.Kirill: I don’t recommend handicraft tuning; it’s better to raise funds and install an air suspension.

Conclusion

The lowered stance on the Grant is beautiful, but not practical if you live in rough terrain. In everyday life, such tuning is not useful. The final decision is up to the car owner.

Ground clearance and lack of ESC

No matter how pleasant the external gloss of the new product is, many are primarily interested in the car’s ground clearance. The value declared by the automaker is 198 mm. This parameter is relevant when measuring under the engine crankcase at curb weight. At full load the value decreases to 182 mm. And here it is worth considering that AvtoVAZ has changed the method for calculating this parameter - now these are honest values. The modernization of the suspension and 195/55 tires of the Pirelli Cinturato P1 model helped to lift the station wagon.

The increased ground clearance allowed us to have a lot of fun - to arrange a real cross-country race on a field with difficult terrain. The approach angle is pleasing - 18.9, which is more than that of one of its closest competitors, the Renault Sandero Stepway, but the Granta Cross loses in terms of departure angle - 26.1. However, it’s worth remembering here: the “French” is a hatchback, and the Granta is a station wagon, which literally means a longer rear overhang.

We also focus on the fact that the Lada Granta Cross does not have an ESC stabilization system, which is due, as Lada representatives say, to the logic of the configurations. There is a technical possibility of installing an assistant, but let's rewind a little and remember the situation with the tall Lada Xray hatch. The model was initially equipped with a non-switchable stabilization system, but consumers very much asked AvtoVAZ engineers to implement a function to deactivate it so that overcoming a slippery surface would not turn into a quest. Therefore, the absence of ESC on the Granta Cross simplifies the task if you have to slip.

Did the increase in ground clearance affect the car's behavior on the highway? No, in any case, you are unlikely to notice the difference. Yes, there is an increase in the aerodynamic coefficient and, as a consequence, a minimal increase in fuel consumption, but this is not at all critical.

Lada Granta Sport today costs 610 thousand rubles, Kalina is 7000 more expensive. There is no choice of trim levels, but by VAZ standards the equipment is very rich, and many people buy the Sport precisely because of this. Homologation Kalina NFR is a different story. They are asking 850 thousand for it.

Suddenly. The press service of AvtoVAZ will present the model range of VAZ's subsidiary Lada Sport at the Dmitrovsky training ground. Granta Sport has been in production for the fifth year, and Kalina Sport for the fourth year. Of course, since last year, Lada Sport 1.6 engines have been retuned for Euro 5, losing four “horses” and ten Newton meters as a result, but is this a reason for a test drive? Anyway, I’m going. At least get to know the Kalina NFR (136 hp versus 114 for the Sports, front suspension on a subframe, Renault brakes). She is only two years old. And at the same time, discuss with the Togliatti residents the main Ladosport novelty of the near future, the “charged” Vesta.

Cars produced by Lada Sport have original bumpers and door sills. The latter cause the greatest complaints from owners due to “low-flow fastening technologies”, read ― self-tapping screws screwed directly into the body.

The sedan and hatchback have a different front panel. In Grant (pictured) the plastic is simpler. Far from ideal, the seats with good lateral support are the same. They are the best among VAZ seats, but they are not height adjustable - the overhanging roof interferes with a comfortable seating position.

Technically, Granta and Kalina Sport are twin brothers, and the driving experience is the same. Up to three to four thousand revolutions, the engine with proprietary camshafts and mufflers pulls without enthusiasm, but also without dissatisfaction. At the top of the tachometer scale, acceleration is confident, although by the standards of real hot hatches, almost ten seconds to a hundred - this is so, acceleration. The point is not at all about Euro-5, the harmful influence of which is barely perceptible, but about the ideology of inexpensive tuning of conveyor engines.

A simple test drive involved numerous “snakes” in second gear, where the only complaint about the Kalinas and Grants was that the steering was not sharp enough.

The entry-level Drive Active cars have 15-inch tires. Sports shoes are worn in 16-inch shoes (left photo). And the Kalina NFR (right) is 17-inch, and the wheels are mounted on a Renault hub with five bolts.

All observations from the Kalina Sport test two years ago are relevant. The suspension is a little harsh, but its energy capacity is excellent. The short ratios are surprisingly good around town, although on the highway the torque makes the ears wilt. The motor twitches convulsively in transient modes. The brakes still squeak. What’s new is the complete abandonment of Korean Mando electric amplifiers in favor of Kaluga-based Avtoelektronika. The reactive action on the steering wheel is indistinct, impacts from bumps in turns are not filtered.

The suspension of Kalina and Granta includes original springs, Demfi shock absorbers and brace brackets. Kalina NFR (right) has a welded subframe and A-shaped arms, although the whole world and even Vesta use L-shaped ones, which optimally combine smoothness and handling.

Nevertheless, in general, the Sports are harmonious: all consumer properties are at the same average level - you can love these cars not in spite of, but because of all these vibrations and squeaks that do not subside at any speed. They are alive. And literally unique: each of the four tested Kalina and Grant groans in its own way, the engines twitch differently when fuel is supplied, the mirrors shake with different amplitudes, and the relay under the panel ticks with a unique frequency. Even the desynchronization of the movements of the left and right windshield wiper blades has an individual signature.

The Kalina NFR handles more accurately than the Sports, it is more stable in corners, but the driving pleasure is lower than, for example, a regular Ford Fiesta sedan. The stupid rigidity and huge turning radius, limited due to the wide wheels, are sad.

The company is busy preparing Vesta Sport, and no one will modernize these cars. The production volume (approximately 3,000 cars per year, two thirds of which are Grants), allowing Lada Sport to balance on the brink of profitability, will only fall. Togliatti residents are racking their brains over how to expand the geography of actual sales, because today a good half of the products are sold in the southern regions - for example, the Stavropol and Krasnodar territories. Moreover, buyers call the main advantage of Sports... a large trunk. What kind of Vesta Sport does it have to be to shoot?

A small sports steering wheel or a short-throw “shifter” - dreams, dreams... Kalina NFR is content with pedal pads, although I would prefer a normal rest for the left foot.

Certainly not as unbalanced as the Kalina NFR. The increase of 22 horsepower is unnoticeable: the engine with the original receiver seems livelier only if you change to NFR straight from Sport. Even according to the passport, the gain at acceleration to 100 km/h does not exceed 0.3 seconds. The NFR jumps around unevenly, causing fear for the rare ultra-low-profile 205/40 R17 tires. The loss of smoothness is partly compensated by more accurate and linear steering responses, but the Chinese Comforser CF700 tires grip poorly and slip early. The NFR has no unity of character.

The shape of the seats is indistinguishable from the Sports, but the NFR has its own instrument panel from Ferrum with a color display. Perhaps the rest of the Lada Sport models will soon receive a variation of it.

The brakes are the only thing I approve of: interacting with the short-stroke drive is pleasant, even despite the low efficiency due to inferior tires. However, the pads on the pedals do not make it easier to shift the throttle: there is an impressive gap between the brake and the accelerator. The general feeling of being unfinished is true: the real mission of the NFR is to serve as a homologation for rally and circuit equipment. There are different shock absorbers, and the engine has been finished. Of the fifty Kalina NFRs produced, barely half were sold. Of course: they are 115 thousand more expensive than the top-end Vesta.

The NFR engine (left) differs from the conventional engine in intake and exhaust, although the difference on the fly is much more modest than the list of improvements. Sports are equipped with a final drive shortened to 4.3, and NFR is also equipped with a limited slip differential.

Production of Vesta Sport will start in December, and sales will begin in March 2018. Expensive and outrageous ideas like Renault's six-speed gearbox have been abandoned, and it will only be a sedan. Engineers admit that working with a modern car is much more pleasant than working with a platform that evolved from the VAZ-2108 of the early 80s. The design potential is much higher, there are fewer inherent defects. But in general, the set of modifications is similar to the current Sports.

Since 2013, Lada Sport has assembled more than ten thousand cars in the workshop of the former AvtoVAZ Sports Car Department. Of the 250 full-time employees, 70 work on assembly, 30 on racing programs, and 12 on engineering.

The simpler Vesta Drive Active will receive a slightly boosted VAZ 1.8 engine with a power of 125-130 hp, and the price guide in today's conditions is 850 thousand rubles. A real Vesta Sport is already 149 hp. from the same engine and about 950 thousand. Both cars have a standard five-speed gearbox and a shortened main gearbox. Such a car will be on the market between top-end B-class sedans (120-125 hp, 700-920 thousand rubles) and, for example, the Kia cee'd GT hatchback (204 hp, 1.3 million rubles). Looks tempting. Will AvtoVAZ and Lada Sport really not be late for once?

The prototype of the sports Kalina appeared in 2006 and was called Kalina GTI. A plastic body kit, 15-inch wheels, disc brakes, a front suspension assembled on a subframe, an original rear beam, electric power steering and a 115-horsepower 16-valve 1.6 with its own intake and exhaust. This car reached a hundred in 10.5 seconds.

The serial Kalina Sport entered the market from AvtoVAZ pilot production in 2008 with two sixteen-valve engines to choose from - 1.4 (89 hp) and 1.6 (98 hp). In the first case, Sport consisted of bumpers, nameplates, a different instrument cluster and hard seats with developed lateral support. And in the second, in addition, there was a sports suspension lowered by 20 mm with original front strut supports, different wheel alignment angles and a gearbox with a 3.9 main gear instead of 3.7. Kalina Sport accelerated to hundreds in 11.5 seconds with a 1.4 engine and in 10.7 seconds with a 1.6 engine. There were no airbags or ABS.
