Place in the lineup
In the silhouette of the popular station wagon VAZ 2104, the contours of its prototypes are easily read - the domestic VAZ 2102 and the Italian Fiat 124 Familiare. These contours are modest and laconic, but stylish and modern. It’s not for nothing that the “four” have become so tightly integrated into the market. From 1984 to 2012, it rolled off the production lines of seven companies, including AvtoVAZ and IzhAvto. The “four” ousted its domestic predecessor from production within a year, and outlived the Italian by two decades.
Having decided to update the model of the first generation rear-wheel drive station wagon, AvtoVAZ designers did not look for good from good. The body of the popular VAZ 2105 sedan was made two-volume, supplemented with parts from the VAZ 2102. The result was model 2104. The model looked fresh and retained all the functional advantages of its predecessors, such as a low loading height and the absence of a rear side in the luggage compartment.
The only objection that the market expressed concerned the engine power. Driving with a large cargo compartment filled to capacity required a more powerful power unit. “Fours” were often used for cargo and passenger transportation, including off-road, and the issue of engine power was very relevant.
The answer to this market challenge was the VAZ 21043 model. This time, the designers were also not particularly clever. The station wagon was equipped with a more powerful engine, which has proven itself in terms of the ability to repair it, with a VAZ 2103 carburetor engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters.
The car turned out to be a sight to behold. Optimal in terms of “functionality/comfort” ratio, it made it possible to take the wife to the general store and feed to the farm. Balanced in terms of power/efficiency ratio, the car confidently accelerated and maneuvered with a full load.

When in 1976, at the plant in Togliatti, they mastered the production of the VAZ-2106 model, which was redesigned for domestic operating conditions from the RAT 124 Speciale of the 1972 model, no one could have imagined that it would become the most popular and mass-produced product of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.
In 1979, the plant launched the production of less powerful modifications of the VAZ-21061 with a 1.5 liter 71-horsepower VAZ-2103 engine and VAZ-21063 with a 1.3 liter 64-horsepower VAZ-21011 engine. They were not popular among the people, but the scale of their production was increasing (especially 21063), and in conditions of Soviet shortages, the consumer had to put up with the combination of an expensive and heavy body with a weak engine, which noticeably worsened the dynamics. Since 1980, Ozone carburetors of type 2107 began to be installed. Changes in electrics due to changing technology occurred constantly. In 1977, cars began to be equipped with new terminals and wiring connections, and since 1986, a new relay has been installed.
Station wagon engine
The carburetor engine of the VAZ 21043 is older than the engine of its prototype 2105. It so happened that the modified “four” became truly popular with an outdated power unit. By the time it was installed on the VAZ 2104, the 2103 engine had been in production for more than 10 years, and on the 21043 model it lasted for almost twenty more. Total - a record three decades on the assembly line.
The carburetor VAZ 21043 is not the result of modernization or tuning of the engine of the model 2104. Its design is a return to previous ideas, well tested on the model 2103. The 2104 engine has a more modern timing belt drive, but the engine with a chain mechanism in 21043 is almost ten years old outlived his descendant.
The power unit has a working volume of 1452 cubic meters. cm. Its piston stroke is 80 mm, while that of the five-cylinder engine is 66 mm with the same cylinder diameter of 76 mm. This geometric difference gives greater output to the 21043. This engine develops a power of 71.4 hp. With. at 64 l. With. at the five-unit.
In terms of torque, the long-stroke 2103 engine performs well at low and mid-range speeds. The short-stroke 2105 engine takes advantage when the tachometer needle passes the 4,000 rpm mark. For a semi-truck station wagon, this advantage was not decisive, and even with less noise and increased maintainability of the timing drive, the five-cylinder engine lost the market to the more powerful three-wheeler. An additional argument is that repairing a VAZ 2103, including do-it-yourself adjustments, is not difficult. VAZ 21043 became the most popular AvtoVAZ station wagon in history.
The album describes and clearly shows the design of the new passenger car VA 3-2105 (basic equipment), produced by the Volzhsky Association for the Production of Passenger Cars. Model BA3-2105 is a modernization of the well-known model of the VAZ-21011 passenger car, and at the same time it is the base model of another family of Zhiguli cars. The modernization was aimed at giving the car a more modern appearance, increasing its comfort, active and passive safety, and efficiency while simultaneously reducing the vehicle's impact on the environment.For the first time in the domestic automotive industry, the VAZ-2105 uses rectangular block headlights, which combine all the functions - high beam, side lights and turn indicators. The rear lights contain interlocked parking and fog lights, brake signals, turn indicators, and reversing lights. Halogen lamps, new lenses and reflectors have significantly improved the lighting characteristics of headlights and, accordingly, influenced the active safety of the car.
Some VAZ-2105 vehicles are equipped with electric washers and headlight glass cleaners. The interior has been completely renovated. The devices are placed on a panel and equipped with glare-free glass. The outside rear view mirror control is located inside the cabin, and the driver can adjust the position of the mirror without opening the window. Since the car does not have windows, intensive forced ventilation of the interior is used. The force on the steering wheel was reduced by approximately one third due to the replacement of roller bearings in the steering mechanism with ball bearings. Improved braking system. All relays and fuses are placed in a box with a transparent cover, on which symbols are applied indicating the purpose of the relay, fuse numbers and the circuits they protect. This makes it very convenient to visually check the condition of the fuses. The use of a toothed belt driving the camshaft and a well-muffled air filter significantly reduced engine noise. The Ozone carburetor, equipped with an electronically controlled forced idle economizer system, and a distributor with centrifugal and vacuum ignition timing regulators provide reduced fuel consumption and lower toxicity of exhaust gases. The car is equipped with a new gearbox and, depending on operating conditions, can be equipped with different rear axle gearboxes. The VAZ-2105 car meets all the requirements of UNECE rules and safety standards. During the production process, VAZ cars are constantly being improved, so individual components and assemblies may differ slightly from those described and shown in the album (as of the documentation as of March 1, 1981).

The most noticeable changes in the VAZ 21043 were those related to engine replacement, as evidenced by the instruction manual:
Externally, the 4th and 43rd modifications are practically indistinguishable. A heating device and a wiper on the glass of the rear door have appeared, but a specialist will reasonably argue that the 2104 models have long been equipped with these options in the export configuration.
It’s not uncommon to see a car on the road that differs from the 21043 in its “seven” interior or radiator front. It happens that a different instrument panel is installed. Popularly the name VAZ 21047 was assigned to this car, which is incorrect. The index 21047 means a modification with right-hand drive, intended for export. Development of the idea of station wagons at AvtoVAZ
Having launched the VAZ-2104 into production in 1984, AvtoVAZ designers did not remove the drawing paper from their drawing boards. They continued to develop the idea of a station wagon, developing variations of the flagship modification of the VAZ 21043. Over the years of production of the 43rd model, they were tested:
These modifications were not produced en masse, but all these years they kept domestic designers in relative shape.
Having exhausted the potential of the body in twenty years of production, and the potential of the engine in thirty years, modification 21043 left the production line. But the objective advantages of station wagons have not gone away. New groups of layout adherents have emerged. These are city dwellers with large families and young people who value the ability to transport large sports equipment.
Station wagons are strengthening their position in the market. And AvtoVAZ is the leader in this. Recently, the Lada Largus station wagon has become popular. This car, like the VAZ 2104 in its time, has a European prototype - the Dacia Logan MCV model produced by Renaul-Nissan. Lada Largus is available in both 5-seater and 7-seater versions, which expands its capabilities. Largus engines have been tested on Renault Logan and have excellent technical characteristics. The spare wheel under the bottom reduces the ground clearance, but the promising Lada Largus Cross does not have this drawback.

Few people know that the VAZ 2104 (“four”) also bears the foreign name Lada Nova Break. This is a five-seater station wagon, which belongs to the second generation of AvtoVAZ “classics”.

The body of the five consisted of straight lines, the bumper was made of aluminum, and voluminous rectangular headlights. Initially, the VAZ-2107 was equipped with a 1.3 carburetor engine. But there were also engine configurations using oil filters, type 2101. The engines on this model were constantly modernized, making them more powerful and durable.
Technical characteristics of the VAZ-2105: the engine has a displacement of 1.3 and a power of 64 hp. The body exterior dimensions are as follows: length – 4130 mm, width – 1620 mm, height – 1446 mm. The ground clearance adapted to our off-road conditions is 17 centimeters. But the trunk does not have a large volume, only 385 liters. Combined cycle fuel consumption is about 10 liters per 100 km.
The VAZ-2105 model was also loved because it is quite easy to maintain. This allows you to do simple repairs and tuning yourself if possible.
Despite frequent repairs and the inability to meet the standards of modern automotive industry, the VAZ-2105 remains one of the most popular models.

A car in a station wagon weighs a little, only 1020 kg (for comparison: the “five” and “six” in a sedan body weigh more - from 1025 kg). The dimensions of the VAZ 2104, regardless of the configuration, are always the same:
Thanks to the folding rear row, the trunk volume can be increased from 375 to 1340 liters, which made it possible to use the car for private transportation, country work and even small businesses. However, the back of the rear sofa does not fold entirely (due to the specific design of the car), so it is impossible to transport long cargo.
However, long elements are easy to fix on the roof of the car, since the length of the VAZ 2104 allows you to transport beams, skis, boards and other long items without the risk of creating dangerous road situations. What are the dynamic characteristics of the VAZ-21043? As reviews note, this car is not at all designed for racing. The empty “four” accelerated to hundreds in 17 seconds. Manufacturers offered two engine options:

Some cars, starting from the 90s, are equipped with a VAZ-2107 type dashboard. The cost in this case is slightly higher. Station wagons of the VAZ-21047 modification, equipped with a radiator trim, a five-speed gearbox, electrical equipment and an interior with bucket front seats from the VAZ-2107, are valued even more expensive on the market. In fact, this option can be considered a modification of the VAZ-2107 with a station wagon body.
The body design allows you to place a long trunk on the roof, but it is not recommended to overload it: the calculated rigidity of the station wagon body is significantly lower than that of the VAZ-2105 and VAZ-2107 sedans (therefore, there are stampings on the roof panel to increase rigidity). The total load of the car should not exceed the permissible 455 kg, otherwise during movement, due to dynamic loads, the body and load-bearing parts will deform and disrupt the suspension geometry. You should also not get carried away with towing heavy trailers - the body may “drive”. By the way, because of this, you should not overpay for the presence of a tow bar on a used vehicle.
Therefore, when buying a VAZ station wagon from two or three years ago, test the car on the move and carefully (it is advisable to invite a specialist) examine the mounting locations of the suspension shock absorbers, levers and power elements of the chassis.
