In these conditions, a manual gearbox, a 3.9 main pair and an engine with acceptable traction at low speeds are what you need. You can move through loose snow with even throttle, almost under pressure. Where there is more snow, you accelerate a little and scratch further with a slight slip - the Cross confidently crawls forward.

Stuck? It’s not difficult to jump back using the old-fashioned method of swinging. Small twigs, branches, and hard crust are not a problem: the black plastic body kit protects the sills and bumpers well from scratches. The tight suspension instills confidence that the car will not nosedive or hit an obstacle at the most inopportune moment.

About the clearance of Lada Kalina 2

Currently, the Internet is full of articles on the topic “what is the ground clearance of the 2nd generation Kalina” and in most cases the figure is 145mm. Reading the next test drive of the new Atovaz product, we come across different information about the ground clearance of the Kalina 2: The ground clearance of the Kalina, like the Granta, is 160 mm under the power unit, which is covered by standard protection. But with an automatic transmission it’s only 140 mm, and without protection. To find out the real ground clearance of Kalina 2, we decided to open the car’s operating manual. It turns out that the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina 2 station wagon is exactly the same as that of the hatchback body and is:

• at full load under the engine crankcase, no less than 160mm.
• at full load under the gearbox housing (manual gearbox/automatic gearbox), no less than 160/145mm.

The total (permitted maximum) weight of the Kalina car of 2 different configurations can be from 1524 kg.
up to 1605kg. Obviously, in most cases the car will not be loaded to capacity, so its ground clearance will be significantly higher than stated, but by how much? Comparing the new Kalina 2 and Renault Duster on the street, even with the naked eye, you can see that the ground clearance of these cars is approximately the same. And if according to the documents the crossover ground clearance without load is 210mm. in single-drive version and 205mm. in all-wheel drive, then the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina 2 should be no less.

Armed with a tape measure, measurements were taken which showed that without load the ground clearance of Kalina 2 with automatic transmission is:

• Under the crankcase, the automatic transmission is 195mm.
• under the threshold of the front left wheel is as much as 230mm.

Thus, the difference in ground clearance at full load and without it is about 50mm, that is, the ground clearance of Kalina 2 without load will be:

• under the engine crankcase, no less than 210mm.
• under the gearbox housing (manual gearbox/automatic gearbox), no less than 210/195mm.

With such characteristics, we can say that the Lada Kalina 2 is a crossover!

Will you have to overpay a lot for Cross?

At the end of January, when we conducted this test, the station wagon closest to it in terms of equipment with a manual transmission and the same engine cost 427,800 rubles. And for the Cross, dealers asked 451,000 rubles. The difference is about 23 thousand. Great offer! After all, “Cross” means large light alloy wheels, an off-road body kit, increased ground clearance, a modified suspension, a short main gear in the transmission and a more pleasant interior. It is promised that the Cross will soon appear with a 16-valve engine, more powerful, and another 10 thousand more expensive. It's also tempting.

Against this background, the price of the test "Kalina" station wagon seems inadequate - 523,800 rubles. But it’s “automatic”! And the “Lux” package comes with a stabilization system. Look through the price lists: foreign cars of this class with automatic transmission, climate control and other benefits are significantly more expensive.

And now - away with the economy! Three days behind the wheel of the new Kalina - and even the author, who is “well over forty”, prefers the youth model. That is, “Cross”. All-terrain capability, non-standard appearance, smart suspension. Drive, finally!

It’s just that the “Kalina” station wagon seemed somewhat pensioner-like, despite the 16-valve engine. And something tells us: buyers will look for peace of mind, coziness and comfort in cars from other automakers.

ZR was the first to see new modifications of VAZ models Lada Kalina and Largus Cross, as well as Lada 4×4 Urban. “Within five minutes crossover” Lada Kalina Cross starts on September 1!

The magazine "Behind the Wheel" became the first publication to show the near future of the Lada brand. The new products are so important for the plant that the presentation was personally conducted by Bo Andersson. The President, without hesitation, started with the Lada-Kalina Cross, without five minutes of crossover. We will follow his example: this car will appear first and at dealers - in September. It will be followed by the Lada 4×4 Urban - from October 1, and the Largus Cross - from November 1.

Manufacturer: AVTOVAZ. On sale since autumn 2014

• The “Cross” version is based on the “Kalina” in the “Norma” configuration, with a 1.6 liter engine (87 hp) and a five-speed gearbox with a cable-driven shift mechanism. The gear ratio of the main pair has been increased from 3.7 to 3.9 to enhance the car’s traction capabilities and emphasize its proximity to crossovers.
• Overlays, larger moldings with the Cross inscription, black elements along the bottom and other seemingly insignificant details refresh the Kalina and really suit its increased ground clearance.
• Instead of the 14-inch “Norma” wheels, the “Cross” version has 15-inch wheels with 195/55R15 tires. The contribution of wheels to increasing ground clearance is plus 7 mm. Thanks to the new discs, the track has become wider by 4 mm.
• This bumper, still a prototype, has an interesting detail: it is asymmetrical, there is only one fog lamp. So the designers compared two design options. At first there will be no fog lights in the series.
• Large wheels forced the steering rack to be reduced by 3.6 mm in each direction, which led to a slight increase in the turning radius - from 5.2 to 5.5 m.
• The element that the regular Kalina lacks will finally become standard for the Cross: I was promised factory underbody protection. The crossover style is a must!
