When installing spacers, MFC LFA specialists diagnose the car's springs. The fact is that the springs sag during operation, and spacers must be installed on new springs. This method allows you to raise the ground clearance by 3-5 cm, which is a safe limit for a comfortable ride.

Installing larger springs

In this case, the standard springs are replaced with springs with a large number of turns. In this way, you can get a significant increase in ground clearance, but you cannot forget about installing extended shock absorbers, because on a large bump the shock absorber can fly out of the cup.

Installation of reinforced springs

This method is well applicable for heavy loads on the car. Particularly relevant for owners of pickup trucks and other vehicles that are designed for transporting large cargo. The increase in ground clearance is rather virtual - ground clearance does not increase, but practically does not decrease when the car is heavily loaded. But stiff springs also have a downside - without a load, the car can sway and “spring” a lot.

The last two options for increasing ground clearance do not involve intervention in the suspension. The first way is to install larger profile tires. Another factor that few people take into account is the age of the car and the wear and tear of the springs—their “sagging” due to age. The issue can be resolved by installing new springs or purchasing spacers for sagging springs on the Lada Kalina . Spacers allow you to compensate for spring subsidence and add a couple of centimeters of ground clearance. Sometimes even an inch of curb parking makes a difference.

But you shouldn’t get carried away with “lifting” the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina, because spacers to increase ground clearance are focused only on springs. If you do not pay attention to the shock absorbers, the travel of which is often very limited, then independently upgrading the suspension can lead to loss of controllability and damage to the shock absorbers. The “bottoms” of all bulky units are collected under the bottom of the car. Some are visible to us from under the hood or from the side of the wheels. But the lower part does not go away; the manufacturer must move it as far as possible from the road surface. Under the car are concentrated hanging parts of the engine compartment, levers, a beam, a suspension stabilizer, as well as bulky structures of the exhaust system with its muffler and catalyst.

From the outside we only see the opening of the fuel tank. And this 50-liter Kalina tank also needs to be rationally placed, because its shape is important for the correct operation of the power system. In addition, the space for placing the tank is limited. Don't forget about the spare tire, which is attached to the bottom of the trunk.

AvtoVAZ indicates several points from which the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina is measured. The manual for a regular Kalina prescribes in the section “Basic parameters and characteristics of a car with a hatchback body (station wagon)” (pages 133–136), two clearance values:

• from the road surface to the bottom of the engine crankcase;
• to the gearbox housing.

It should be borne in mind that these parameters were measured at the moment when the car receives full load. We also calculate the full load value specifically for your Lada Kalina from the instructions. It is necessary to subtract the curb (empty) weight from the maximum permitted weight. The column with this indicator is located above the clearance column.

Depending on the type of engine and configuration of the Lada, the weights vary slightly. On average, the full load of Kalina is 450–500 kg. Therefore, the distance from the road to the engine crankcase/gearbox will be specified if there is an additional weight of 500 kg on board your car.

If you don’t want to buy a Kalina with a manual transmission, know that the clearance of a regular Kalina with an automatic transmission is less than the ground clearance of a Lada Cross with a robot by as much as 42 mm.

What ground clearance did the manufacturer claim for Kalina?

Any manufacturer faces the difficult task of keeping the components located along the bottom “line” of the Lada Kalina car body away from the road surface as much as possible in order to protect them from damage. These are not only suspension components, but also unit trays, exhaust pipes, etc. The issue of “hiding” the fuel tank is especially pressing, since it is no secret that the consequences of its damage will occur.

The manufacturer indicates the clearance value, indicating several control points from which the measurement was made. So in the manual, or more precisely in its section on “main parameters and characteristics” (pp. 133-136), two clearance values ​​are clearly indicated, measured as follows:

• from the road surface to the lowest point of the engine crankcase;
• from a similar point of the transmission unit to a flat road surface.

These values ​​were measured after the weight load on the Lada Kalina car was increased to the regulatory maximum. This parameter can be easily calculated: it is necessary to subtract the curb weight from the total weight value. The load size is affected by the type of motor and level of equipment. On average, this parameter reaches a value of 450-500 kg. The ground clearance value shown in the manual will only indicate its value if the vehicle is loaded with a 500 kg load.

For both body versions of the hatchback and station wagon of the Lada Kalina model in the second generation, the ground clearance is as follows:

• from the lowest point of the motor – 160 mm;
• from the same point of the mechanical transmission – 160 mm;
• from an automatic unit - 145 mm.

If we touch on the Kalina Cross variation, then its ground clearance differs favorably in a larger direction. Here the regulatory values ​​state that this value from the engine crankcase to the road surface is 182 mm, and from the transmission unit - 187 mm. This value is valid for all versions of engines and gearboxes.

Equipment

The difference between Kalina and Granta becomes noticeable if you look at the car’s equipment. In Kalina the basic version is already installed:

1. Electric power steering.
2. Short steering rack.
3. 14 inch wheels.
4. Air filter in the cabin.

To increase the front clearance of the Lada Kalina 2, I decided to install 21 mm spacers (Article: 21-15-001/20) between the A-pillar support and the body reinforcement.

2. Disconnect the steering rod from the shock absorber strut

3. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the lever

4. Disconnect the brake hose from the shock absorber strut

5. Remove two bolts from the steering knuckle and shock absorber strut

6. Unscrew the three nuts of the upper shock absorber support and pull out the shock absorber strut assembly with the spring and upper support 7. Replace the bolts of the upper shock absorber support with the bolts from the kit

8. Install the +21 mm clearance spacer on the upper shock absorber mount

9. Install on spacer

10. Install everything back 11. Tighten all nuts to the required torque. Tighten the upper support nuts when the front of the car is on the front wheels.

12. Adjust the wheel alignment angles

Don't forget to lubricate everything if necessary.

If the bolts (camber bolts, with an eccentric) do not come out of the holes of the steering knuckle and shock absorber strut, then we heat the necessary part of the steering knuckle, not the shock absorber strut, and knock out the bolts.

Everything was installed without a hole in the garage.

For those who like spacers between the “cups,” the height of the new bolts in the upper support of the shock absorber strut will be sufficient.

An additional positive effect of the +21 mm spacer at the front of the Lada Kalina 2 is that less dirt will fly into the engine compartment.

Real Driver Measurements

But how to determine the real clearance of a Lada without a full load? Real measurements with a tape measure (without load) show the following results.

A special experiment was carried out. Its essence is to compare the veracity of the clearance ratio of a regular Lada and a Cross. To achieve this, four subjective measurements were made. The distance was measured from the road to the side threshold, under which the jack is placed.

To conduct the experiment, the cars were placed in the same conditions. Both cars had an empty interior, an unfilled trunk and the same minimum amount of fuel in the tank. The standard Lada station wagon was equipped with radial tires with a width of 175 mm, a profile of 55% and a seat diameter of 14 inches. The cross version is shod with tires with a width of 195, a profile of 55 and a diameter of 15.

First, we measured the ground clearance of a regular Lada Kalina station wagon without load. The resulting value is 198 mm. Then we got 217 mm as a result of a similar measurement on Kalina Cross. Before the second measurements, four people were asked to sit in the cars one by one. A loaded regular station wagon gave a result of 170 mm. After loading, the clearance of Kalina Cross was 192 mm.

Real car clearance measurements

Let's determine the ground clearance without applying the previously specified regulatory load. How to do it? Let's use a tape measure. We summarize the results of real measurements in a table.

An interesting experiment was carried out, the purpose of which was to check the veracity of the ratio of the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina in its usual version in comparison with the “Cross” version. For this purpose, 4 measurements were performed. The ground clearance was measured from the road surface to the side sill with the preliminary installation of a jack. For the purity of the experiment, it was necessary to place both cars in identical conditions. Both Kalinas were presented for testing with empty interiors and luggage compartments, as well as with a minimum of fuel in the tanks.

The regular version of the Kalina was shod with 14-inch radial tires of 175 width and 55 profile. The “cross” variation received 15-inch tires, the width and profile dimensions of which were respectively “195x55”.

The first to be measured was the Lada Kalina 2 in its standard version. In the no-load state, the ground clearance reached 198 mm. During the measurements, the “cross” version received a ground clearance of 217 mm.

At the next stage, 4 people were seated in the test cars one by one. When loaded, a regular station wagon gave a ground clearance of 170 mm. When Kalina Cross was loaded, the clearance level dropped to 192 mm. As a result, the additional weight managed to lower the ground clearance of the regular version by 28 mm, and the Cross version by 25 mm. Here, a modified suspension and wheels with a larger diameter played a role.

Body

If we compare all VAZ cars from 2005 to 2012, for example, then Kalina will turn out to be the most lively in terms of bodywork. For 7 years, not a single saffron milk mark has appeared on my body, all the paint is factory and not even a bubble. It is safe to say that the quality of metal and painting is superior to all models, especially Priora, VAZ 2113-2115, and the tenth family.

The bottoms of the doors, hood and trunk lid, which are especially susceptible to corrosion on other cars, hold up very well here. Moreover, my car was always kept in the open air and I had never seen a garage. I didn’t bother much with washing (once a month), so I can’t say that I took special care of the car’s condition.

Engine and gearbox

Despite the fact that acoustic comfort is not encouraging, and for the most part this is all due to the noisy engine 21114 or 11183, the reliability of these units is impressive. You can’t boast of your mileage as cosmic, but even during this time there were no technical problems, except for adjusting the valves, there were no other interventions in the device.

The Kalina station wagon initially has a very stiff suspension, especially in the front, and to solve this problem, I had to change the front struts to SS20 Comfort-Optima. The front brake discs and rear drums are still original and do not require replacement.

Electrics

If compared with Priora, then on Kalina everything is much simpler. Take for example the same comfort block. If in Kalina there is practically no demand for it at all, then the Priorovskys are selling me like hot cakes. Yes, and ask any electrician who repairs the electronics of our cars, and he will definitely tell you that Kalina’s comfort units are practically trouble-free, but from Priora they fly very often.

The door locks are electric and already internal, unlike the VAZ 2110-2112 or Priora. The design is such that they are located inside the door and are not divided into external and internal. Thanks to this, the doors on Kalina close like those of a normal car, and not like those on a cart.

Salon and interior equipment

The seats are more comfortable than on the Priora, and if you argue without knowing the essence, then of course I don’t mind. But after driving several hundred kilometers in one car and back in another car, it immediately becomes clear where it is more comfortable to sit. Although, it is possible that everyone’s backs are different.

The door trims rattle less, as they are made of higher quality than those of other AvtoVAZ models. Brose window lifters, which are found even on expensive foreign cars VW Jetta, Skoda Octavia, etc.

And it’s also worth noting the very spacious interior, despite the fact that the car doesn’t seem that big from the outside. Sitting in the driver's seat is much more comfortable, and the back row is also more spacious.
