New, of course - it’s been around for almost 40 years, of which 10 years the model has not been called Niva. But somehow I can’t seem to forget about my “maiden name”... So, what does “urban” promise?
Many fans of the AvtoVAZ model series know that the Kalina Cross was created on the basis of the Kalina 2 station wagon. Car enthusiasts are still arguing whether this was a rational decision, and how much the two cars differ from each other. To be honest, the appearance of the VAZ-21946 (aka Kalina Cross) immediately shows that the car is clearly an all-terrain vehicle. But is that really where the differences end? Let's look into this issue by comparing: Kalina 2 and Kalina Cross.
Kalina Cross is sold, the whole truth about operation!
Let's start with a brief background to the purchase: we were looking for a car to replace the older Niva, with a more asphalt slope, but with the ability to drive into the forests, that is, with high ground clearance. The full history of selection and purchase can be found in this article.
In general, we hit the target and got what we needed - although we didn’t have to use the ground clearance, since we never really went anywhere where it could really be useful. In general, the off-road capabilities are not bad, I checked it on a test car. But the main thing, of course, is greater driving comfort - no one needs to explain that in terms of dynamics, comfort, sound insulation, vibrations and just goodies, in the form of climate control, power windows, heated seats and other things, Kalina Cross was placed on unattainable levels of hedonia and convenience after the Niva ! The level of comfort and convenience has increased many times over - you can’t argue with that, the loss was only in terms of cross-country ability, however, it turned out to be unnecessary in the conditions in which Kalina was used, in fact, even the cross-country ability of the Cross was unnecessary.
Dry numbers: the car is 2.5 years old, purchased on July 27, 2015 by the first owner, purchased by us at the end of May 2021, under warranty, current mileage is 42,300 km, Norma equipment is the minimum equipment with an 8-valve engine.
Off-road test
As practice shows, off-road is a serious test for both the Lada Kalina Cross and the Lada Largus Cross. Mud obstacles also pose a serious problem for these cars. This is partly due to the fact that Kalina Cross and Largus Cross are station wagons and their ground clearance is raised slightly. But they also worked on the chassis of the cars and seriously changed their geometry, due to which both models acquired a more massive wheelbase. The ground clearance of the Lada Largus Cross is 21 cm, while the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina Cross is 18 cm. In principle, these dimensions are quite enough for a comfortable ride.

Gray Viburnum Cross
The gray Kalina Cross was purchased three months old with a mileage of 1600 km, at the moment the mileage is about 13000 km. The first maintenance was done, which includes only valve adjustment - 650 rubles, we did maintenance 1 - changing Rosneft 5W40 oil, air filter, valve adjustment, etc. - cost a little more than 4000 rubles.
Problems with this machine:
- The same problems with the rear wiper, fender flaps, creaking windshield - a signature feature!
- Replacing the resonator . When releasing the gas, at rpm from 2100 to 1700, an unpleasant hum was heard. I contacted it during zero maintenance - they ordered the resonator to be replaced, I had to wait a week and a half for the spare part, after which it was replaced under warranty.
- Steering rack knock . The rack was knocking, apparently from birth, with zero maintenance I did the same thing - they tightened the steering cardan as usual - a common problem, but it didn’t get any better. It knocks at low speed when passing small frequent irregularities. Here the famous “warranty” of Lada came into play: instead of diagnosing the rack and making a decision on replacement or repair, their procedure, in violation of the Regulations, is as follows: the dealer disassembles the rack, measures the gaps, if they are not normal, then they change them under warranty, if not normal - they offer me to buy a new rail or they assemble the old one at my expense. I am fundamentally not happy with this state of affairs. But in the end, from new the car still drives with a knocking rack - fortunately it is not always audible...
- The howl of the box . Yes, all Viburnums howl like a gearbox - it’s the crooked VAZ ones that can’t do a clean machining of the gears! But, at some point, the sound of a “turbine” began to appear in fifth gear, and the further it went, the more!
I had to go to the dealer again, the dealer said that he couldn’t find anything, he assured me that the oil level was correct, but if necessary, he could take it apart - if they find something, then it’s a guarantee, if not, then at my expense! Again this did not suit me and I decided to travel further. After a couple of days, the noise literally became even louder. I went to another dealer, they said that the drive fell out of the gearbox (!) due to an impact (!!), oil leaked out of the gearbox and the bearings and gears were screwed! I arrived at the place, the wheel was mine, but there were red stripes on it (so they decided that it had been replaced), but they, on this particular wheel, were always there, no impacts were found, I assured that there were none (and they weren’t there!), but the fact is the fact - the drive fell out. The service was loyal to me, so they replaced the guts of the box with new ones (they would hardly have changed it otherwise), for a total cost of 12 thousand with work, under warranty (in fact, almost everything).
- The license plate lamp has burnt out . I bought a light bulb, started installing it, it turned out that water was half gurgling in the lampshade, the lampshade itself was dirty from the inside, and the contacts of the lamp were simply rotten. I had to clean the connector between the wiring and the lamp wiring and the connector of the lamp itself - they were green, there was water there. In the second the picture is the same. I cleaned everything, straightened the crooked seal, changed the light bulb, put it back together - so far no water gets in, but now it’s winter, in the spring I’ll replace the connectors and lampshades - I’ll go to the dealer.
- The right shock absorber of the tailgate began to dangle and knock. The dealer ordered a replacement, we need to stop by to install it - the part took 2 months.
- The radiator fan began to make increased noise and vibration, noticeable when the air conditioner was turned on or the car heated up until the fan activated. Until the dealer decided - he already went once, they are asking for some more measurements - again this moronic VAZ procedure...

The first 200 km is a highway. The speed is about 110 km/h (according to the tachometer this is about 2,600 rpm). The engine and gearbox are practically inaudible; they are drowned out by the general noise from the road and wind. The cabin is quite quiet, you can calmly talk in a low voice.
On the highway, the gearbox does not stand on ceremony with switching: it easily throws the needle towards the “prohibited” speeds. Then I adapted: I switched it to manual mode before overtaking and clicked when it reached 3,000 - 3,500 rpm. The car picks up 120-130 km/h very easily. Noticeably faster than it was on the Accent (even during the run-in).

Vehicle interior
As you approach the car, you notice a lot of orange in the interior. Thus, the designers wanted to distinguish the model from the general range, and they succeeded. Sitting down in a chair, you immediately notice increased lateral support and a dedicated lumbar pillow.
In general, the seats here are completely new, they were designed specifically for this “raised” station wagon. It would seem that new seats should improve comfort, but in reality the opposite is true. The cushion under your back puts too much pressure and you constantly want to arch over. The horizontal pillow itself is located too high and the legs simply hang. Additional regulations may change the situation, but there are none yet.
But there are always disadvantages, it’s better to talk about the advantages. Thus, the designers have modified many plastic elements, and now there is practically no rattling characteristic of Ladas in the cabin. Serious complaints were caused by the vibration of the glass while driving, which was also resolved by installing new seals.
Some car owners complained that the doors did not close well on the regular Klin Station Wagon model. These opinions were taken into account and now a light push is enough to slam the door! The installation of new automatic closers made closing them especially comfortable.
Although the interior of the Lada Kalina Cross received new “notes”, but, by and large, it remained the same. Serious modifications would inevitably lead to an increase in the price of the car!

We drive out onto the roadway, the turn signals click pleasantly. The 2021 Lada Kalina has amazing wheels: large, easy to drive with. In the second it goes up to 60 km/h like a glove. Nothing hangs anywhere, which is very nice. The brakes are adequate. This 2017 Lada Kalina drives much better both due to the wheels and due to the fact that the suspension has been slightly changed. The landing was done differently.
The sound insulation of Kalina Cross 2021 is excellent, you sit comfortably. When you let go of this car, the steering wheel does not move, it stands still, that’s what front-wheel drive means.
Priora engines are good, they drive great on bad roads. The suspension works great with these wheels. The parking sensors beep when parking.

Comparison is a subjective concept, so it is irrational to give a definite answer to the question Kalina Cross or Kalina 2. At the end of January, when we conducted this test, the station wagon closest to it in terms of equipment with a manual transmission and the same engine cost 427,800 rubles. And for the Cross, dealers asked 451,000 rubles. The difference is about 23 thousand. Great offer! After all, “Cross” means large light alloy wheels, an off-road body kit, increased ground clearance, a modified suspension, a short main gear in the transmission and a more pleasant interior. It is promised that the Cross will soon appear with a 16-valve engine, more powerful, and another 10 thousand more expensive. It's also tempting.
Against this background, the price of the test "Kalina" station wagon seems inadequate - 523,800 rubles. But it’s “automatic”! And the “Lux” package comes with a stabilization system. Look through the price lists: foreign cars of this class with automatic transmission, climate control and other benefits are significantly more expensive.
