Some owners of the Lada Vesta sedan during the operation of the car notice extraneous sounds similar to rattling, rumbling or humming of the muffler. According to reviews, noise is noticeable not only at idle, but also at speeds of 110-125 km/h (at 3000 rpm and when releasing the gas). Let's figure out what the cause of this problem is and what answer AvtoVAZ gives.
AvtoVAZ's response to corrugation and muffler
Questions to AvtoVAZ regarding the problem in the operation of the Vesta exhaust system were asked live on “Ladnaya Mechanica”:
Question
: On Vesta, the exhaust system growls in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears around 2000 rpm, as if the corrugation does not work and does not dampen vibrations.
Answer
: Perhaps this problem is individual. Perhaps there is a contact somewhere on the body causing a hum. Show your vehicle to a warranty engineer.
Question
: Everyone's exhaust howls around 3000 rpm. Most people digest corrugations.
Answer
: If you have a specific problem with a specific vehicle, please contact your dealer. If the problem cannot be solved, the presenter suggested writing about it in a PM, indicating the VIN of the car and the dealer where you are being serviced.
What is the noise in the Vesta cabin at medium speeds?
We all studied at school, at least we pretended to, and we know that any sound is vibration, the transmission of vibrations, sound waves. Naturally, the hum in the Vesta’s cabin at idle or at 3000-3200 rpm is also ultimately a vibration. We can distinguish a knock in the front suspension, the knock of the brake calipers from the dull hum that penetrates the cabin. Noise of this nature usually comes from the exhaust system . Since a corrugation is installed in front of the exhaust pipe, we can discard the vibration from the engine; it has a different character.
AvtoVAZ advice in practice
1. On the advice of AvtoVAZ, one of the owners of the Lada Vesta sedan turned to the LADA dealer with the problem of “glushak humming.” After the diagnosis, the necessary parts were ordered, but we had to wait 10-14 days. As a result, the exhaust system was repaired under warranty (the vibration damping clutch and additional muffler were replaced). The problem was solved. The owner talks about the problem in two videos:
2. However, after a month the muffler noise returned. This time the owner did not contact the LADA dealer, but decided to replace the corrugation and resonator himself at a third-party service station. During the conversation with the service workers, it turned out that several owners of the Lada Vesta sedan had already contacted them at the service station with a problem with the muffler hum.
How to solve the problem
:
- We replaced the standard vibration damping corrugation with an extended one.
- We replaced the standard additional muffler with an alternative one (according to the service station workers, the factory one rattles like a tin can).
The work was carried out using welding. The whole process on video:
Attention!
This information is posted for informational purposes and is not an advertisement for the service in the video. You can replace the vibration damping corrugation or muffler at any service station, including an official dealer. In addition, there is a budget-friendly way to modify the design and solve the hum problem.
Have you encountered rattling noise in the muffler on Vesta? Did you manage to solve the problem? Leave your feedback in the comments.
By the way, do not forget to check the muffler mounts. During the life tests of Vesta, over 100 thousand kilometers (this is equivalent to 5 years of operation), all muffler suspension cushions (gingerbread) were changed 2 times. Another cause of rattling may be an additional muffler (resonator).
Just recently, AvtoVAZ released a new car with a good design. At first glance, you might think that this is a foreign car. The modern exterior is combined with an organic interior design. Good dynamics, fuel efficiency of the car and low price determine increased demand for the Lada Vesta car.
Despite all the advantages of the car, it has significant disadvantages. Such disadvantages include the appearance of extraneous sound after forty-five thousand mileage.
A characteristic noise occurs when moving under the bottom of the car. If you do not pay attention to it, it gradually intensifies, and then vibration appears. It becomes especially noticeable at two to three thousand engine speeds and speeds from one hundred five to one hundred and fifteen kilometers per hour. Sometimes vibration appears when starting off.
Factors affecting hum level
A humming sound occurs if the unit operates in certain modes. During one cycle of operation of the transformer, tension and compression of the core occurs twice. If the mains frequency is standard with alternating current (50 Hz), the device begins to hum.
Also read: What is the difference between a transformer and an autotransformer?
The frequency of sound is twice that of electric current.
The strength of the transformer hum is determined by the following factors:
- Degree of workload;
- Overall dimensions of the constituent elements;
- Physical characteristics, material used to manufacture the magnetic core.
The hum may occur due to the following design features of the transformer:
- the effect of magnetic flux tends to move the windings of the device relative to the magnetic core. If the coil is not wound tightly enough, vibration occurs due to the loose fit of the turns with a corresponding hum (the black arrow shows the coil);
- If the core plates are poorly fitted, gaps appear between them. During operation, the vibration of the plates is accompanied by a characteristic metallic ringing, turning into a buzzing sound (the red arrow shows the core plates);
- if the copper wires of the windings are defective or damaged, the coil may spark, with popping noises with each spark. Powerful discharges are characterized by a more intense sound;
- The individual parts in the device are not sufficiently secured, resulting in vibration and noise.
A strong hum is typical of power transformers used in industrial production. But if the operation of a low-power household appliance begins to be accompanied by a significant hum, this is a reason to carry out diagnostics in order to identify and eliminate the malfunction.
If the exhaust system fails, replace the Lada Vesta corrugation
Many people believe that replacing the Lada Vesta corrugation is due to the fault of the muffler. The most likely cause of the malfunction is the failure of the elastic coupling of the Lada Vesta muffler. If a malfunction occurs, the car is shown to a car service specialist, where they inspect it on a lift and diagnose the malfunction. A failed bellows must be urgently replaced with a new one. If this is not done, it will burn out more and more, and the exhaust sound will constantly increase.
Procedure for resonator modification
- Remove the standard part of the Lada Vesta.
- Make two square holes in the bottom of the base of the part using a grinder. The size of the holes depends on the nozzle of the welding unit.
- Weld the baffle to the base of the additional muffler.
- Weld a pipe to the partition. No need to weld to the entire surface.
- Select the optimal points that provide a strong, secure fit.
You can overcome the noise of parts on your own with the help of such a modification.
If you turn to a car service for a service, you will have to pay 1000 - 1300 rubles.
Reasons for failure
Accelerated aging of an elastic coupling occurs due to:
- Exhaust system malfunctions;
- Failure of the catalytic converter;
- Worn pillows or loose engine mounts;
- Poor muffler mounting.
The failure of corrugations can be affected by aggressive additives of high-octane gasoline, dirt and chemicals used to treat roads in winter, mechanical impact when hitting an obstacle or impacts of crushed stone from under the wheels of a car.
The bellows is installed on a straight section of the exhaust pipe in front of or behind the catalytic converter, when it fails, excess pressure acts on the walls of the corrugation. And in combination with the high temperature of the exhaust gases, the clutch burns out.
Replacement algorithm
- Remove the battery terminal;
- Disassemble the exhaust system down to the pipe bend;
- Using a grinder, cut out the part. The cut must be smooth to ensure high quality welding of the product. The part is cut closer to the edges. After cutting the part, carefully clean the edges, remove traces of erosion and dirt;
- Remove the lambda probe;
- Fix the pipe and secure it by welding in several places to prevent the part from turning over during final fixation;
- Dismantle the pipe;
- Weld the new product;
- Put the structure back in place and secure it;
- When replacing a spare part, replace all gaskets in the exhaust system.
Replacing the Vesta muffler corrugation: eliminating the defect in a car service center
If “symptoms” of problems occur, you should immediately contact a car service for a replacement, which is as follows.
A grinder is used to cut out the failed corrugation. An additional muffler is removed along with it - this part is not reliable and may fail immediately after repair.
It is replaced with an alternative one together with the replacement of the flexible coupling, so as not to have to come for repairs in the near future. An elongated elastic coupling is installed; it works better and is more durable.
They are scalded on both sides and an additional muffler is installed.
At first glance, this work is not difficult, but it must be done very carefully. Any, even the slightest, distortions will lead to its rapid failure.
Some services carry out repairs; they tighten the elastic coupling using clamps and powerful springs. In this way, they temporarily eliminate the problem, which soon arises again and again the Vesta muffler corrugation needs to be replaced. Motorists should be aware that this is a temporary measure that can be used on long trips.
Factory response to this problem
Following the growth in car sales, the number of people contacting AvtoVAZ representatives with complaints about the presence of uncharacteristic sounds and symptoms of a muffler malfunction has increased.
AvtoVAZ representatives commented on the situation as follows: the cause of the hum may be a feature of a particular sedan model, in which the muffler is in contact with the surface of the body. The result is a hum and rattling sound. Experts advised that if symptoms of product malfunction appear, do not overcook the mufflers, but contact an authorized dealer.
The cost of the elastic element depends on the seller's selling price. The price of corrugation for Vesta starts from 600 rubles and reaches 850. The cheapest parts are manufactured in factories in Poland and China. Elastic elements made in Germany are more expensive.
The corrugation on the Lada Vesta requires replacement in case of any type of breakdown. The part cannot be repaired. You can carry out restoration work with your own hands, but it will only give a temporary effect. They are suitable if it is not possible to change the part in the next week.
What does a car enthusiast need to know when it is necessary to replace the muffler corrugation of a Lada Vesta?
In order for the bellows to work for a long time, and replacing the Lada Vesta muffler corrugation not to become a constant nightmare, the driver must constantly monitor the quality of the engine mounting.
The condition of the airbags, serviceability and safety of the muffler shock absorbers. Do not drive over obstacles that are higher than the vehicle's ground clearance. Owners of Lada Vesta must regularly undergo vehicle maintenance at certified car repair shops. They will inspect the entire vehicle, check the performance of the exhaust system, and determine the condition of the engine shock absorbers and muffler mountings.

Causes and signs of incorrect engine operation at start
If, when starting the power unit of the car, vibration appears, blue smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe, and the engine smokes and shakes, then of course, not everything is in order with the internal combustion engine.
What are the reasons for difficulties in starting the engine:
Due to lack of fuel in the tank. No matter how trivial it may sound, you should always check the level of gasoline in the gas tank; perhaps the reason lies in the lack of fuel. Use of low quality fuel. Today, more than 70% of domestic gas stations sell low-quality fuel, which, in addition to fuel, may contain large amounts of water. To make sure there is no water in your gasoline, pour 1-2 liters into a bottle and leave it for several hours. If there is water, it will sink to the bottom and this will be visible immediately. Perhaps some “prankster” poured sugar into your gas tank, then a sediment may form at the bottom of the bottle. If you are the owner of a car with a diesel engine, and the engine jams and stalls immediately after starting at subzero temperatures, then perhaps the reason lies in frozen fuel. As you know, diesel can freeze in severe frost. The reason may also be a discharged battery. Every vehicle has different devices and equipment that require charging. And even when the engine is not started and all energy consumers are turned off, some devices may consume a minimum charge. For example, the cause of inoperability may be the ignition relay or fuel pump - these elements often cannot work with an incompletely discharged battery
You should also pay attention to checking the starter if starting the internal combustion engine itself has become more difficult. We should also talk about the fuel pump - this device most often provokes a malfunction in which the internal combustion engine starts and immediately stalls. Its incorrect operation, failure, as well as clogging of the fuel filter can lead to the power unit operating intermittently
If the filter element is clogged, then it simply will not be able to optimally pass fuel through itself or will pass it too slowly. In this case, gasoline will enter the cylinders, but after the engine is started, there will not be enough fuel to ensure optimal operation of the unit. Accordingly, a few seconds after starting it may stall. Think about the last time you changed the filter element - this device needs periodic replacement. Filter clogging can also occur due to the use of low-quality fuel. Another problem is the spark plugs. These devices are considered one of the main ones in the ignition system as a whole. Like any other parts, spark plugs wear out over time and when their service life comes to an end, they begin to work intermittently. In addition, the reason may lie not in wear, but in the formation of soot, which can be caused by various factors. Often carbon deposits appear in units in which the air-fuel mixture is formed incorrectly or in a car that, again, is filled with low-quality gasoline. High-voltage wires that connect the spark plugs to the ignition distributor or coil. Over time, wires can wear out, which can damage the insulation on them. If the insulation is weak, then in rain or wet weather this may cause a voltage short-circuit. Another reason why the power unit begins to behave inappropriately is the timing belt or chain. As a result of prolonged use, the adjustment of the strap may be disrupted and it will begin to wear out. This problem may occur not even when the belt is worn out, but when starting the engine in severe frost. Often, malfunctions of this kind are associated with errors in the operation of the control unit, as well as related systems. Moreover, you need to take into account that such problems are not always indicated by indicators on the dashboard. There are a huge number of reasons why errors can occur, so we will not consider them. We will tell you more about how to identify such a malfunction below. If we are talking about a carburetor engine, then the cause of the problem may be due to a failed throttle valve. Another malfunction is a broken or incorrect operation of the lambda probe. One of the most unpleasant problems for a car owner is poor compression in the cylinders of the power unit. It may be due to the fact that the service life of the internal combustion engine is coming to an end and it may be necessary to undertake a major overhaul soon (the author of the video is the Secret GARAGE channel).

Article 20. Consumer rights in case of sale of goods of inadequate quality
11. If a dispute arises between the consumer and the seller (manufacturer, supplier, representative) about the presence of defects in the goods and the reasons for their occurrence, the seller (manufacturer, supplier, representative) is obliged to conduct an examination of the goods at his own expense in the manner established by the Government of the Republic of Belarus. The consumer must be notified in writing about the place and time of the examination.
12. In the event that defects in the goods are discovered by the consumer during the warranty period, the seller (manufacturer, supplier, representative) is responsible for the defects in the goods unless he proves that they arose after the seller transferred the goods to the consumer as a result of his violation of the established rules for the use, storage, transportation of goods or actions of third parties or force majeure.
Recommendations for selection
Depending on how the exhaust system is designed, they can be vertical or horizontal. The first ones are fixed below the exhaust manifold and when the engine is running, they are compressed and straightened vertically without bending. Their length is approximately 150 mm, and their diameter is 65
When choosing, you need to pay attention to the size match
Horizontal types are placed under the first elbow of the receiving pipe and are bent during operation. Their length reaches 40 cm and diameter up to 65 mm. If you plan to change the corrugation without using a welding machine, its length is chosen a few centimeters longer in order to attach it to the pipes with clamps or a threaded method.
There are three types of vibration dampers offered in stores:
- single-layer, made of metal hoses with outer braid;
- two-layer, with an internal braid added;
- three-layer ones are made with an additional corrugated metal hose installed between the braids.
When choosing, you need to focus on the quality you would like to have. When buying corrugation in a single-layer braid, you need to be prepared for its annual replacement. The three-layer version will ensure that there are no problems with the muffler for 8-10 years, even with intensive use of the car.
When choosing, you need to focus on quality
The quality of the material is assessed according to the following characteristics:
- when choosing from parts that are identical in appearance, preference is given to the heavier one;
- the higher the quality, the brighter the steel shines;
- the pipes must have thick walls to ensure a reliable connection of the corrugations;
- On a high-quality vibration damper, the braid is made with minimal gaps.
Noise 5: wind noise/whistle - the higher the speed, the more it blows in the car with the windows closed
The wind swirling around various parts of the car's body, such as the front grille, headlights, and bumpers, creates natural noise as the speed increases. Typically, such noises are not heard inside the car due to sound insulation. By the way, usually when designing a car and testing it in a wind tunnel, engineers design the body in such a way that even at high speed no wild noise is generated.
If your car makes excessive wind noise at speed, it may be due to the installation of additional accessories such as a trunk, spotlights, wing, spoiler or side deflectors on the windows. It is also quite possible that strong noise at speed is associated with loss of body geometry after poor-quality restoration after an accident.
Solving this problem again involves trial and error. For example, if you suspect the noise is coming from the roof rack, remove it and test the car at speed without it.
And what an “appetite”!
Back in September 2021, at the height of events, so to speak, suspicions arose that the fuel consumption in my Lada Vesta did not meet the standards stipulated by the factory. My combined cycle consumption is 11.2 liters per 100 kilometers. Seems like a lot for a 1.6 engine, in my opinion. And since I had to “by chance” communicate with the dealer quite often, I decided to formally request information by writing the following statement:
It turns out that the official dealer does not have data on fuel consumption standards for the car they sold? This happens. Not expected. But I wasn’t asking specifically about my “special” car, as follows from the statement, but about what, in principle, fuel consumption rate per 100 kilometers was set by the manufacturer for all cars of this make and model. In general, if you want to know about fuel consumption, then it’s not the seller, but you need to contact some institute.
Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights Article 7. Information about goods (works, services)
1. The manufacturer ( seller , supplier, representative , performer) is obliged to promptly provide the consumer with the necessary and reliable information about the goods (works, services) offered, corresponding to those established by this Law, other acts of legislation, technical regulations of the Customs Union, technical regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union and requirements usually imposed in retail trade, consumer services and other types of consumer services for the content and methods of providing such information. For certain types of goods (works, services), the list and methods of communicating information to the consumer are established by the Government of the Republic of Belarus, unless otherwise established by the President of the Republic of Belarus.
Realizing the futility of my aspirations, I wrote the following directly on the control certificate form for the work order on January 21, 2020:
“I agree with the serviceability of the brake system. I request a technical examination of my car to determine the origin of the “unbearable howling” when braking when reversing. When contacted, the service does not answer this question.”
I'm still sitting and waiting. In the meantime, when I drive in reverse, passers-by turn around and are perplexed, but I feel somehow ashamed. It’s a pity that it’s just me.”
Do-it-yourself repairs
Burnt-out components: corrugation, muffler, catalyst - are most often restored, dismantled, or replaced by welding. In parallel with this, there are two options for repairing the exhaust system with your own hands without the use of welding. The first method is intended for permanent installation of a corrugation instead of a damaged one, the second is a temporary replacement in emergency mode, followed by permanent repairs.
A new corrugation costs 700 rubles; to weld it, they charge 2,500 rubles. The total is 3200 rubles. Instead of welding work, you can repair the exhaust system using clamps. You need to buy two Zhiguli clamps measuring 48 mm, a corrugation with a cross-section of 45 mm, and a length of 200 mm. The entire purchase costs 1000 rubles. The original corrugation may be different - 100–200 mm, but this is not a hindrance. Tools: grinder, cutting wheel for metal.
The right side of the car is jacked up, the protection is removed, and the exhaust pipe studs are unscrewed from the manifold. A long clamp is released from below and the muffler is removed. Worn corrugation must be cut off with a grinder. On the new one, cuts are made along welded universal pipes. This is done to better tighten the clamps. The corrugation is attached on both sides and covered with clamps. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
If the corrugation burns out and the owner cannot get out to the workshop, there is a temporary DIY option without welding. A new corrugation and elastic medical bandage are purchased. In a pit or overpass, it is tightly wrapped with a bandage well impregnated with epoxy resin. The minimum operation after such repairs is one month, the maximum is three. However, you should not delay it, as the remaining elements of the exhaust system will begin to rapidly deteriorate.
