Where to place the rolling jack of the Lada Vesta

Lada Vesta › Logbook › JACKING THE VESTA CORRECTLY (BEND OF THE CREST OF THE THRESHOLD)

On the Vesta forum, information appears about curved ridges of the sills when lifting the car on a lift. The result looks like this.

And they put the foot of the lift in this place

The photo of the light green vesta clearly shows the deformation of the ridge.

The owner of light green VESTA wrote on the forum

According to the results of the blitz survey, there were more than 20 victims of the lifts.

You can avoid this result if you ask in advance to lift Vesta correctly, namely, to place the legs of the lift under the correct places.

One of these places is the spar, as a strength element of the body.

This is where you need to install the lift foot under it.

If there is a rolling jack in the garage, then roll it from the front under the front side member.

And from behind? There is a "jack" at the rear. But even there, for gourmets, you can use a simple device so as not to rip off the plastisol from the ridge of the threshold. We cut out a jack plate from birch, which fits into the jack. The threshold ridge now remains intact both front and rear.

Lifting the car

Before lifting the car, place a wheel chock under the wheel that is diagonally opposite the one you are working on. Also engage 1st gear and pull out the parking brake handle.

The Lada Vesta car has special reinforced platforms for installing a jack. Their location is marked on the threshold of the car with an arrow. Due to the applied anti-gravel coating, the arrow is difficult to see. It is located at a distance of 10 cm from the edge of the front wing, and 17 cm from the rear wing. On the cross version, the arrow is printed on a plastic body kit.

The platform is located opposite the arrow behind the edge of the threshold.

The jack should only be installed in these places. It is placed with the upper stop on the indicated platform, and the metal bracket clings to the edge of the threshold. This prevents rotation as the ratchet rotates.

If you do not need to lift the car high, but only replace the wheel, then the top screw does not need to be unscrewed at first (no more than 1 cm).

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Place the top of the plastic jack against the designated area.

  2. Hold the ratchet with your hand and rotate the jack body until it rests on the ground. Try to install the jack as vertically as possible.
  3. Insert the wheel wrench into the ratchet handle until it stops.

  4. Turn the key, pull it out a little and return it to the starting position.
  5. Insert again until it stops and repeat the operations. With such simple movements the car rises.

The ratchet mechanism is not very convenient. Other metal jacks have a special pawl. Therefore, there is no need to constantly remove and insert the key. When the wheel is off the ground and can rotate, it can be replaced.

Give me a foothold and I will change the whole world. This is a development of the basic idea of the law of leverage discovered by Archimedes: the longer the lever, the greater the force it provides.

I welcome subscribers, as well as those who will be interested in this topic. Namely, choosing a good and reliable jack to replace the standard one. So that there are no problems when replacing wheels moving from winter to summer and vice versa, as well as in the event of any emergency situations that require hanging the wheel.

While still the owner of a liftback grant for almost five years, I never once used a standard jack. The reasons are clear; the plastic one did not inspire confidence. And even then there was already a diamond-shaped jack left over from the previous grant. By the way, it was also bought to replace the standard one. In those days, the sedan did not yet have a plastic jack as standard equipment. But even the one that was supplied from the factory with the car required replacing it with something more reliable, in order to avoid the car falling off the jack. And there were cases. That's when a diamond-shaped, mechanical jack was purchased.

He served faithfully. But, during the last change from winter to summer, it was already bent, but it lifted the grant without problems, it was only necessary to carefully align it. Thin metal, occasional use, a maximum of one ton of lifting, did the trick. The connections began to loosen, so it began to bend, but it still managed and was effective.

And when it was necessary to change the shoes of the Vesta sw, he already gave up. He bent into a figure eight, never lifting the wheel off the asphalt. I didn’t dare lift it further, I was afraid of falling. I described this in detail in a previous blog post: Getting ready for the winter.

That’s when I started thinking seriously about replacing and purchasing a reliable jack, either a bottle jack or a rolling jack.

The sliding tackle, for all its advantages, had at least one big drawback. It is large and would take up a lot of space in the trunk of a car.

I had to look for suitable options. Having looked through the catalog of jacks on Emex, I settled on a four-ton hydraulic jack, an autoproduct. I threw it into the cart and continued to look at other options.

For two or three weeks I still couldn't find anything suitable. Either the price is high, or the lift height was less. And if it was larger, then the pick-up point became high.

In the end, I decided to take the auto product. Pickup height 160 mm. Lifting height 380mm. Which is ideal for a bride.

I suggest you watch the footage of tests of a standard jack and a jack from an autoproduct.

I don’t think I made a mistake in my choice, it’s a good jack. True, it also has a drawback; the painting leaves much to be desired. While still taking it out of the box, I noticed that the paint was simply falling off. And after the test tests, small areas of exposed metal became noticeable.

Advantages and disadvantages

This design, compared to the hydraulic one, has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantage is the high pick-up height. When assembled, the height is 175 mm. It is not as convenient to use compared to a hydraulic device. You need to constantly monitor how far the screw is extended during installation.

The ratchet mechanism is also inconvenient to use. But, due to the fact that the jack is purely mechanical, there is no oil inside it. It can be transported horizontally. The hydraulic jack can only be transported vertically.

The screw design is considered reliable; it can only be broken by stripping the thread. This occurs if the declared load capacity is exceeded. Another disadvantage is the material of manufacture - it does not allow lifting a load of more than 550 kg. This is enough to lift one wheel of a Lada Vesta. However, the jack will work close to its limit and its service life will quickly decrease.

How to use the standard LADA telescopic jack

The telescopic screw rack jack (article 8450031895) can be a standard jack on Lada Vesta, Granta, Kalina, Priora and Datsun cars. It is made of plastic (both of its screws are made of plastic), so as not to break it or damage the car, it is recommended that you read the instruction manual for this jack before use.

Maximum lift

Let's test the plastic jack of the Lada Vesta to see how high it can raise the car. The instructions indicate that first the top screw must be unscrewed by 30 mm. In order for the machine to rise as high as possible, you do not need to rotate the body. You need to hold it with your hand, at the same time rest the upper part against the car body, and rotate the ratchet.

This will remove both screws at the same time. If you lift it as before, with the body resting on the ground, then the thread on the lower screw will end earlier than on the upper one. The jack must be placed exactly vertically, since the lifting height will be large.

When lifted, when the wheel has not yet left the ground, the upper screw already begins to bend. As a result, the wheel rose 9 cm from the ground at its maximum height. The main thing is to set it level at first and use it carefully. At the slightest unevenness, the upper screw bends strongly, and it becomes scary to work.

Preparing for work

Position of the tool in the organizer and sequence of work with the jack.

6.1

Before starting work, clean the supporting surface of the car body from dirt, prepare a platform on the ground for installing the jack.

6.2

Check that the jack has no mechanical damage, that the screw pairs are lubricated and not dirty. Brake the car following paragraph 2.2.

How to use it correctly

Looking at the small size and flimsy appearance of the standard product, drivers often wonder where to put the jack so that it does not break and can lift the car? Where should the car itself be parked? Indeed, for a plastic tool to help change a wheel properly, not every surface is suitable for it.

Places where the jack rests on the car - for this purpose, there is a place on the thresholds marked with an embossed triangle where the tool should be placed so as not to damage the body. And in order for the standard lift to stand up straight, it has a special hook that can be used to hook it to the car. If you do everything correctly, the car itself will not be damaged when replacing a wheel.
