Lada Kalina comes off the VAZ assembly line with a built-in central electronic control unit and an injection engine. All problems that arise in electrical and electronic systems are recorded by the control unit, stored in memory, and issued as a digital code.
Some errors are displayed on the screen of the combined instruments, and a more in-depth search for errors and their decoding is carried out by external devices, such as scanners or using computer diagnostics. Third-party devices are connected via the diagnostic connector. The fault codes on an 8 valve vehicle are identical to those on a 16 valve vehicle, with some additions.
Self-diagnosis
Before contacting a car service, you can independently determine in which of the nodes or on which of the highways the malfunction occurred. This can be done using self-diagnosis, when errors occurring in the electronic control unit are displayed on the control panel. Maybe you can fix it yourself, or at least understand what you are faced with and what to expect when contacting specialists.
This is a simple procedure. It is enough to reset the instrument data of the daily mileage by holding the Reset button and turning on the ignition. The devices will switch to test mode, during which the indicator lamps and backlights will light up, and the device arrows will move back and forth along the scales. On the steering column lever, on the right, menu items are switched, in which there is a self-diagnosis mode for devices. Information about the software version and digital error codes stored in the memory of the control unit will appear on the screen.
There are tables for deciphering errors. Exit from the self-diagnosis mode occurs within the next 30 seconds, during which no manipulations need to be performed.

What is a liquid crystal display or indicator? liquid crystal display, or LCD for short, is a flat-shaped display based on liquid crystals. So, it was not in vain that I started with LCD indicators, since we will talk about the LCDs installed in the Lada Kalina.
An indicator installed on the dashboard displays information processed by the on-board computer. The amount of information displayed depends on the vehicle configuration.
This screen displays the following information:
1. Current time or number of the suggested manual transmission gear (or automatic transmission mode);
2. It also shows the total mileage of the vehicle or mileage during one day(s);
3. Displays data on the external temperature or one of the indicators (the latter depends on the vehicle configuration);
4. Fuel level.
In order to start the self-testing mechanism in a Lada Kalina car, you must:
1. The battery must be connected;
2. It is necessary to hold down the car daily mileage reset button and turn on the ignition
Read also: Nissan Marine 5 liter outboard motor
3. Then, after turning on the LCD indicator, you need to press the “mileage” button again once. The indicator display will then show the program version;
4. Error codes, if any, will be displayed in the top two lines;
5. In order to return the system to working condition, there are two ways:
•press any of the buttons on the control panel;
•wait 15-30 seconds. and the system itself will return to working condition, however, when choosing this option, you do not need to press the buttons.
Below is a breakdown of the codes that may appear on the panel:
1. Code 2 – on-board network overvoltage;
2. Code 3 – fuel level indicator (open circuit);
3. Code 4 – coolant temperature indicator, also an open circuit;
4. Code 5 – the external air temperature sensor has failed;
5. Code 6 – engine overheating;
6. Code 7 – oil pressure level is too low;
7. Code 8 – the vehicle’s brake system has broken down;
Many modern cars have the ability to independently read electrical system problems. Error codes on Kalina, after decoding, can reduce the time required to find a faulty unit in the electrical wiring.

How to diagnose and reset error codes?
In addition to the instrument panel, in Lada Kalina you can diagnose a controller that monitors the functioning of a specific electronic component of the LADA Kalina car. For example, the Bosch-ME-7.9.7 controller is capable of informing about the presence of an engine error. Reference books or a special program will help you decipher the meanings of the codes. Mechanics remember the interpretation of all codes by heart, but beginners and owners with a similar desire have only to step on the path of an amateur diagnostician.
More specifically about some code examples:
- error “0441” indicates a malfunction of the oxygen sensor;
- code “1602” will indicate a loss of voltage in the ECU power circuit;
- error “0363” will inform you about a coil failure.
The nature of the autonomous diagnostic module is such that the breakdown of a specific part is not displayed, but a specific area is localized, in which the owner needs to solve the existing problems through more accurate diagnostic measures and subsequent repairs. Many car owners will find a table of codes and their decoding useful.
For example, when error “0504” is displayed, this only hints at a malfunction in the brake system. The owner will find out exactly what has gone wrong if he performs a thorough inspection of the brake circuit. This is also true for other systems and components.
Error "0343". The decoding shows that the sensor responsible for the correctness of the signal in the phase circuit overestimates the readings. To find out the reasons why the sensor operates in this mode, you will need to perform manual diagnostics.
Self-diagnosis is designed to make it easier for the LADA Kalina owner in troubleshooting, as it allows you to focus suspicion on certain areas of action, saving time. For example, a clutch problem will be indicated by error “0830”. Its decoding is given in the table.
Note that error codes can change their meanings when the ECU software is changed. This forces the owner to have an up-to-date table to avoid confusion.
Diagnostics using third-party devices
For a more detailed check of the vehicle's performance, scanners and computers are used. They are connected to the diagnostic electrical connector (socket) located on the standard panel. Malfunctions are issued in the form of a standard set of alphanumeric codes, consisting of one letter and four numeric designations. The letter indicates specific nodes in which the malfunction occurred.
B - detects problems with electronics inside the cabin;
C - indicates defects in the chassis design;
P - errors in the engine control module or transmission;
U - loss of communication between electronic modules.
The letter designation is followed by four characters:
- the first character indicates a standard code established by engineers at the Automobile Association;
- the second character records personal codes set by manufacturers;
- the third character indicates which system the malfunction occurred in:
1-2 - in the fuel and air system;
- in the ignition system;
- in a secondary emission control system;
- in the speed control controls or when the load is off (XX);
- on-board computer system and wiring;
7-8 - errors in the operation of the gearbox;
9.0 - reserve;
- the fourth and fifth symbols are considered together to more accurately locate the point of failure.
Diagnosis of Kalina
There are two ways to determine malfunctions in the Lada Kalina engine management system. Through self-diagnosis, as well as testing using a computer and a special adapter. The first option is simpler, but less accurate. Computer diagnostics of a car allows you to get a detailed answer about the causes of malfunctions.
Self-diagnosis
This procedure is performed using the dashboard inside the car:
- The vehicle's ignition must be turned off. The daily mileage reset button on the control panel is clicked. While holding this key, you need to turn the key in the lock to turn on the ignition.
- The control panel automatically enters self-diagnosis mode. All component positions and the LED indicator will light up on its screen. The arrows on the sensors will begin to move from the minimum value to the maximum.
- Using the control button located on the steering column switch, you can switch from one mode to another. The user has the opportunity to go to the self-diagnosis menu, view the software version, and also determine combinations of errors.
- To leave the menu, you need to take no action for thirty seconds.
An Arbix user showed the procedure for self-testing a Lada Kalina car.
Computer diagnostics
To complete the task you will need the following:
- Computer, you can use a laptop. The use of a tablet device is allowed.
- USB cable for connecting to the diagnostic connector.
- The software that will be used for testing. There are many firmwares for computer diagnostics. Reviews show that the best option would be the VAZ utility. It is designed specifically for AvtoVAZ models - Kalina, Priora and Grants.
For computer diagnostics of a Lada Kalina car, you need to find the connector; it is located in front of the gear lever, in the compartment above the cigarette lighter.
The verification procedure is carried out as follows:
- Testing software is installed on the computer.
- A plastic cover opens in front of the gear lever, and underneath it is an OBD-2 or K-Line output.
- The next step is to connect the wire to the block. One end of it is connected to the connector, and the other to the computer.
- After this, the presence of a connection is diagnosed. To do this, you need to go to the “Task Manager” on your computer. By going to the “Hardware” tab, you can see whether there is a connection or not. If available, testing activities continue.
- Then the firmware is launched, which will be performed for testing. If the program does not read the codes, then you need to click on “File” and select the “conduct diagnostics” item. A table will appear showing all fault combinations.
- By going to the "Options" menu, you can see the status of the vehicle. The “Codes” tab displays information about existing faults.
- After receiving the combinations, you need to decipher them and fix the problem.

Diagnosis of errors
When you begin to notice something unusual in the behavior of your car, or there are obvious problems in its operation, then it certainly makes sense to have it diagnosed. Naturally, the OBD-II diagnostic connector will show errors most efficiently and accurately, however, not everyone has sockets to control this connector and has to use the standard one.
In order to enter self-diagnosis mode, you must:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Click on the daily vehicle mileage button.
- Then, continuing to hold it, turn the key in the lock.
- Thanks to this, all available indicators will light up, and the dial indicators will go into self-test mode and show data from zero to maximum.
- When this happens, use the button located on the steering column switch and use it to switch the data on the instrument panel.
- To read the fault codes, we need the last one - the third screen. Unambiguous error codes will be displayed there.
Displaying the error code on the third screen of the bookmaker. The photo shows error 4 (faulty coolant temperature sensor).
Error codes (decoding)
These are the most common error codes that can appear if there is a malfunction on the Lada Kalina.

If the system is checked through a diagnostic block using OBD-II, then the code combination will consist of four characters, preceded by a letter at the very beginning.
- P - indicates a problem with the engine or transmission.
- C - displayed when an error occurs in the “running”.
- B - when such a letter designation appears, you should pay attention to the serviceability of the central locking system, airbags, and power windows.
The second digit means:
- 0 – common code for OBD-II;
- 1 – number of the car manufacturer;
- 2 – number of the car manufacturer;
- 3 – reserve code.
The third character refers directly to the type of failure:
- 1 – malfunction in the air supply system and fuel system.
- 2 – similar to code “1”.
- 3 – failures and malfunctions in the ignition system.
- 4 – auxiliary control.
- 5 – malfunctions during idle operation.
- 6 – malfunction of the ECU or its circuit.

How to reset errors?
To delete information about trouble codes, you need to go to the service mode of the dashboard. To do this, press and hold the daily mileage reset button. After entering the code menu, click it again and hold it for three seconds. Then all information about problems will be deleted from memory. When this happens, the display will show “——”.
If a computer is connected to the diagnostic connector, Kalina error codes can be cleared using the program.
Correct diagnosis and error reset
In addition to the main dashboard in the Lada model, you need to pay attention to a special device - a controller, whose task is to record the operation of various electronic components of the car. Some modern models are capable of notifying about errors in engine operation.
For competent decoding, it is advisable to use technical reference books and resources on the Internet. To be sure of quality work, it is recommended to contact a service station - mechanics remember the coding by heart. Let's consider several cipher options:
The panel will not reflect a specific malfunction, but the area where it occurred will be clear. This is convenient - the owner of the vehicle knows exactly what to examine and check, and more accurate diagnostics will solve the problem. To thoroughly check the location of the fault, you need to perform subsequent repairs using a table or reference book for decoding.
It is important for the car owner to understand the most common combinations, since a breakdown can occur at any time
Knowing the codes helps you focus on a specific part of the configuration and helps save time. A little secret from the manufacturer: the on-board computer menu has one convenient function - “Plasmer”
If it is activated, new impulses are sent to the electrodes of the internal combustion plugs, ensuring high-quality engine operation on cold winter days.
In severe winter conditions, the engine will be much easier to start, and the on-board unit will produce much fewer combinations of errors. There is one more point: the “View Errors” button helps to visually assess all technical faults and promptly intervene in order to prevent further serious breakdowns
Pay attention to the "Gasoline pump" option. The developer has offered you a convenient method for monitoring the pressure and power of the entire system
Thanks to this addition, you can be confident in the quality operation of each injection nozzle.
Diagnostics on the vehicle controller and resetting error codes
In addition to the dashboard, diagnostics can also be carried out on the Lada Kalina using separate controllers responsible for a particular system or unit of the car. For example, the Bosch-ME-7.9.7 controller may report a motor error.
Error codes are deciphered using both reference books and special software.
At the same time, experienced auto mechanics remember all fault codes by heart, but novice car enthusiasts cannot do this.
As for specific examples, for example, error 0441 indicates a malfunction of the oxygen sensor, value 1602 indicates that the mains voltage to the ECU has disappeared, and p0363 indicates that the coil has broken. At the same time, all diagnostic systems do not accurately indicate that any specific part has broken down, but only localize the problem area so that the car owner can take measures to more accurately diagnose the problem.
Error Code Table
For example, if you see error 0504, this means that there are problems with the brake system, but you can only find out what exactly happened by inspecting it. The same applies to other faults, for example, 0343 means that the phase circuit sensor has a high signal level. Why this happens can be found out by examining this node manually.
At the same time, self-diagnosis makes life much easier for both the car owner and the mechanic, as it allows you to immediately eliminate certain scenarios when troubleshooting. So, if you tell a car service that you have error 0036, the specialist will immediately understand that this is not an engine error, but a problem in the heater control circuit, and code 0830 will indicate to him problems with the clutch.
