I have many acquaintances who are auto mechanics who help me if anything happens and have considerable experience in disassembling/carrying out repairs. In this article I will try to tell you which oils to use on a VAZ 2114 car.

Sooner or later, or rather, based on the rules of technical maintenance of the car, the time also comes to replace the lubricant mixture in the gearbox. And in this case, the car owner is faced with a difficult choice: which oil is the wisest to use? The choice of lubricant for the machine in the gearbox should be done as carefully as possible.

If you choose a lubricant for a VAZ-2114 car, then the manufacturing company provides in its technological documentation a specific list of lubricants for automotive systems and engine elements. However, this list does not always correspond to existing realities and oil quality standards.

After reviewing some sources of information on the Internet and scrolling through many automotive sites with discussions of motor oils and reviews (will be later in the article), I came to the conclusion that car enthusiasts fill the gearbox with a lubricant that their engine will definitely not like.

Recommended types of lubricants for the AvtoVAZ 2114 model will be listed below.

Let’s not get too carried away and go astray. Let's consider which engine lubricants are the most popular among car owners, as well as which lubricants were recommended in the work: the well-known 75w90 oil from Lukoil is synthetic in its base and is recommended by the car manufacturer. It is this lubricant that is used in many of the latest AvtoVAZ engines. It is also often used in model 14.

The excellent lubricating properties of this series of oils guarantee long operating time of the machine at high and medium pressure values. According to the existing classification, the oil complies with the API and GL standard.

85w90 is another high-quality semi-synthetic oil that belongs to the API class and has a designation of at least GL-4. Many experts recommend it for 14 used AvtoVAZ models. For its price, I would put it at the very beginning. By the way, it costs much less than classic “synthetics”, and by the way, the gearbox operates much more quietly with this oil.

Recommended lubricants for AvtoVAZ 2114

  • However, many car owners will ask a fair question: what oils (meaning specific companies) can be poured into the 2114 engine? I would look at this issue more precisely and write a list of transmission lubricants that can be poured into this unit:
  • Trans KP, Lukoil TM, Nordix Super trans, Slavneft. This also includes Castrol, Shell Getribeoil and some types of TNK lubricants. The latter oils are expensive, but in terms of chemical composition and additives they are much superior to similar products from other manufacturers.
  • For this reason, if the owner of the car is worried about his beloved “iron horse,” naturally he will choose these lubricants.

Checking the oil level

Before adding new oil, you need to make sure that there is really not enough of it. This is quite logical, but at the same time, it does not always correspond to factory regulations. The fact is that in harsh operating conditions, the frequency of oil changes is unpredictable. After making sure that the fluid is below the Min mark on the dipstick, we proceed to fill in new oil. If the oil has darkened, then adding more will not be enough. So, in this case, you will have to perform a replacement with flushing - that is, first drain the old oil, then clean the box with a special compound, and then introduce new oil.

Types of lubricants

As everyone knows, the established lubricant labeling was not invented out of nowhere, and there are certain reasons for this. I would note three types of lubricants for 2114 that can be poured into the engine and gearbox. These lubricants have different designations and chemical indicators, but the main thing in the selection process is the viscosity indicator. This is what you should take into account if you are selecting a lubricant for your VAZ 2114. So, let’s take a look at how oil-based auto fluids are classified.

Semi-synthetic oil. Often used in AvtoVAZ model 14. In fact, this is the most popular type of motor lubricant. Semi-synthetic oils are almost ideal for use in most climatic zones of Russia. This mixture is something between mineral water and synthetic oil, which is obtained by mixing certain proportions.

Such oils are also suitable for 2114, since they are much less sensitive to temperature changes.

When do you need to change the oil in a VAZ 2114 gearbox?

The oil for the VAZ 2114 gearbox is injector, 8 valves and needs to be changed every 60,000 km. Sometimes it needs to be replaced sooner. This needs to be done if:

  • The machine is operated in difficult conditions;
  • The liquid has changed color or there are impurities or sediment visible on the dipstick;
  • The manual transmission was repaired;
  • When the season changes, if non-all-season chemicals are used. It is especially important to replace before frost;
  • The driver prefers an aggressive driving style.

If there is insufficient transmission fluid, it must be topped up. It is recommended to check its level regularly. You can check the oil in the gearbox using a special dipstick, and if it is missing, using the filler hole. If it disappears frequently and quickly, you need to find out the reason. There may be a leak or other malfunction.


You can change the transmission oil yourself or at a car service center. For independent replacement, it is advisable to have a garage.

Choosing a gearbox lubricant

When selecting a lubricant, I would advise you to be guided by the words of the automakers. It is difficult to say exactly which lubricant will be better, since oils are sold on the market in quite large quantities.

If you are in doubt and you are not satisfied with any of these lubricants, I would advise purchasing the latest gear oil from more well-known and expensive companies, for example: Castrol 75w90 or Shell Getribeoil 75w90. A good choice for the 2114 engine would be the TNK 75w90 series.

As mentioned earlier, the overall performance of the car depends on the oil purchased for the gearbox or engine, so I would not recommend saving. Filling with low-grade lubricant guarantees certain problems after several thousand kilometers. It is best to listen to the advice of the car manufacturer and make a choice in favor of only trusted companies.

You should only buy lubricants for VAZ (and for any car in general) in good reputable auto stores.

How to choose the type of oil for a VAZ-2114 gearbox

What base the oil will have doesn’t really matter, so you can buy both mineral and synthetic. If you look at cost and consumption, then it is more profitable to opt for a mineral substance. What criteria should you pay attention to?

  1. What is the relative sliding speed?
  2. The magnitude of the specific loads acting in the internal space of the mechanism.

These criteria are influenced by the best oil viscosity selected specifically for your car, as well as the required number of additives. Extreme pressure additives are a desirable feature because while the sulfur components contained in the fluid cause metal defects, they also form scuff marks, which over time form a thin film that slows down the wear process. This allows the mechanism to work longer even in the harshest climatic conditions, and the issue of metal defects fades into the background.

If previously TAD-17I was used as a lubricant for transmissions of domestic cars, today it is successfully replaced by high-quality TM5-18. What other types of gear oils are there:

  1. GL-4 – suitable for the gearbox of front-wheel drive vehicles.
  2. GL-5 – are considered the most universal, suitable for domestic brands of cars, and are of the best quality.

In addition to mineral lubricants of the format Rexol TM-5-18, Norsi and Lukoil TM-5-18, there are masses that are not so thick - Wells TM, Spectrol-Forward, Tekso Geartex EP-C. Also on store shelves you can find synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants for Motulgear, Teboil EP, BP Energear SGX gearboxes.

Main motor lubricant 10W-40 from Lukoil

For all owners of AvtoVAZ cars, and primarily for those who use the car in difficult conditions: the company’s oils are suitable for extreme temperatures and when constantly moving over short distances, the oil guarantees a cold start.

Engine oil of the 10W-40 series has the following advantages: 5w40 series lubricant guarantees instant starting and quiet operation of the 2114 engine in any weather. The lubricant also guarantees high gasoline savings and effectively prevents the appearance of sediment. These lubricants have won many prizes in competitions and are very popular.

Lukoil oils are distinguished by the best anti-wear properties in almost any conditions, as well as when starting in the cold. Oxidation resistance allows the longest intervals for changing this oil. The series oils fully comply with existing quality standards.

High-quality lubricant was created and developed specifically for 14 series cars and is used in other cars of the company. The oil has the best anti-wear properties and guarantees the highest level of protection in almost any conditions, including when the engine is running in the cold. Resistance to increased oxidation allows the longest intervals for changing this oil.

About the choice of viscosity and the term itself

The viscosity of the lubricant is determined at maximum temperatures and at high speeds of friction of surfaces, while being characterized by three main indicators - these are dynamic, kinematic indicators, as well as indicators of the oil viscosity level index.

In terms of viscosity characteristics, both all-season and summer/winter samples are used.

Universal oils for VAZ include:

  • SAE 0W30, SAE 10W40, SAE 15W40 and SAE 20W40.
  • With the values ​​on the container of all-season lubricants, the following values ​​should be present: the first is an indicator of oil viscosity at minimum temperatures, and the second - at maximum.
  • The number after the SAE index indicates the viscosity level of the oil, and the larger this number, the higher the viscosity index of a particular lubricant.

Recommendations

For reliable operation of the VAZ 2115 gearbox, the manufacturer recommends a scheduled replacement of lubricants after every 60 thousand km. To eliminate the possibility of accidental failure of the gearbox, the car owner should adhere to the following rules:

  • Replace lubricants on time and according to regulations;
  • Use only a high-quality product suitable for a given car model and recommended by the manufacturer;
  • Periodically monitor the lubricant level in the gearbox and, if necessary, add gear oil to the system.
  • The VAZ 2115 gearbox has a capacity of 3.3 liters; when replacing, it is better to purchase lubricant in one 5-liter canister. Prepackaged lubricant is sold in containers of 1, 3 and 5 liters.

Sometimes it makes sense to purchase lubricant on tap from a barrel, but this can only be done if you are completely confident in the quality of the product being sold. Beware of fakes!

Changing transmission oil for VAZ 2114

Your vehicle's owner's manual will tell you when to change the transmission oil. This must be done after the car has run 60 thousand kilometers. If this replacement is not made, substandard lubricant is poured into the gearbox and its level is not monitored while using the car, a situation may arise where repair of the VAZ gearbox is required.

Having decided on the brand of lubricant, that is, having understood which oil is best to pour into the box, and having listened, among other things, to the advice of a specialist, you need to choose the appropriate packaging.   • pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a previously prepared dry cloth, and install it back

How to check the oil level in the gearbox.

  • Pull out the dipstick again and use the oil trail left to determine whether there is enough oil in the box; the level should not be lower than max; if the level is low, top up the transmission

Experts advise maintaining the lubricant level in the gearbox a little more than the maximum on the dipstick. This is due to the fact that the teeth of the fifth gear gear are above this mark and in order to reduce the hum and increase the service life, the gear must be completely closed.

Experienced drivers use another way to control the transmission level - with their finger. To do this, also on a flat surface and a parked car, unscrew the nut from the filler hole and insert a finger there. If your finger does not reach the lubricant, then there is not enough lubricant in the box. The level is considered normal when the transmission reaches the lower limit of the filler plug.

Monitoring the condition of the lubricant in the gearbox is very important. At each measurement, you need to touch it with your fingers. If metal shavings are found there, this is a signal to replace the transmission, regardless of the mileage of the car. Moreover, it is mandatory to thoroughly rinse the gearbox before adding new lubricant.

We recommend: Repair and maintenance of the VAZ 2114 gearbox. To flush the gearbox, use a mixture of kerosene and transmission in a one-to-one ratio. Three liters of the prepared mixture is poured into the gearbox, the filling hole is tightly closed. You can do without lifts by driving in first gear for 5 minutes in the garage area, the effect will be the same. Replacing a transmission in a gearbox is a technologically simple process. Therefore, you can handle this matter yourself in the garage. In order for everything to go quickly and without surprises, you need to seriously prepare:

  1. Purchase the required quantity of the required transmission lubricant.
  2. Prepare a collection container for the drained liquid with a volume of at least five liters.
  3. Prepare the necessary keys, a large syringe and dry rags in advance.
  4. Carefully study the manual - how to drain the oil from the box and how to pour oil into the box of the VAZ 2114. This must be done in advance, so as not to be distracted later to clarify the details.

Having studied and prepared everything, you need to warm up the gearbox well so that the oil becomes liquid and drains easily. To do this, make a trip with all gears engaged. Returning to the garage, you need to drive into the pit, open the hood, remove the crankcase protection and install a collection container under the drain hole of the box. Next you should proceed as follows:

  • remove the rubber cap from the breather;
  • the cap and breather with hole are thoroughly cleaned of dirt;
  • remove the dipstick from the gearbox housing;
  • unscrew the plug from the drain hole;
  • after the lubricant is completely drained, the plug is installed back, closing the drain hole; this must be done carefully so that a leak does not form due to an incorrectly installed plug;
  • using a syringe, through the hole into which the dipstick is inserted, the required amount of transmission is poured;
  • the dipstick is installed in place and then the breather is closed with a rubber cap.

After the oil has been filled, after some time it is necessary to check the actual lubricant level in the gearbox using a dipstick. If it is insufficient, then it is necessary to top it up. Constant monitoring of the lubricant in the gearbox and its regular replacement in accordance with the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer is the key to long and uninterrupted operation of the VAZ 2114 gearbox.

In the case of changing the oil in the gearbox on a VAZ 2115, not everything is so simple, because there are different gearbox systems, and in some cases it is combined with the main gear. In this option, it would be quite acceptable to use motor oil rather than transmission oil. But first things first.
