Crankcase protection function Grants Liftback

The main functions of the armor are:

  • oil pan protection;
  • transmissions from mechanical damage while driving;
  • accidental deformation when hitting obstacles.

The design of the sheet is made so as to fit as closely as possible to the pallet and not take away the height from the ground clearance.

Owners are not always satisfied with the standard protection, workmanship, and material. It is often practiced to install another modification. We will look at how to do this yourself and what is needed for this in this article.

Installation

This process is not labor-intensive; even a beginner in this matter can handle it. In fact, this procedure takes no more than twenty minutes. Therefore, it should not cause any special difficulties, especially since you will see in the video how this is done. But in order to do everything at once, you should prepare in advance.

What will be needed for replacement?

Actually, to replace the element you only need a set of wrenches, no other tools are needed. Also, of course, you will need the structure itself that you will install. For Lada Granta cars, crankcase protection from Kalina is perfect. But keep in mind that it is different for automatic and manual transmissions. Therefore, consider this factor before purchasing.

New protective structure for the Lada Granta engine crankcase

Step by step work

So let's get started with the installation:

  1. First, you need to drive your vehicle into a pit or overpass so that you have free access to the bottom of the car. Place wheel chocks under the car and set the handbrake.
  2. The front wheels may interfere with installation. If you are uncomfortable, then lift the front of the car on a jack and remove both wheels. But if you put the front of the Lada Granta on a jack, then before you begin installing the structure, place supports under the car. In this case, ordinary bricks will do.
  3. Get under the bottom. You may already have standard factory engine protection installed. If this is the case, then take a wrench and unscrew all the screws around the perimeter that secure it and dismantle the structure. Clean the lower part of the motor from dirt and dust, if necessary, treat with an anti-corrosion agent to prevent rust.
  4. As you can see, it's not that difficult. Now all that remains is to install the new structure. It is attached very easily, it is quite possible to do it yourself. Take the same bolts on which the factory design was installed and screw your purchased crankcase protection onto the bottom of the Lada Granta with their help. On the rear side, which is closer to the interior, the structure can be attached to the lever supports. On the front side it is attached to the so-called crabs.

1. Place the vehicle on supports and remove the protective structure provided by the manufacturer

2. Install the new protection, securing it with bolts. At the rear it is attached to the lever supports, at the front - to the crabs. Actually, this completes the procedure. You can learn more about installation from the video provided below.

And remember that using low-quality material in the future can only harm the car. For example, if you purchase a structure made of plastic, then know that it will not be as reliable as a metal one. Of course, the salesperson in the store will tell you about all the advantages of plastic structures, that they supposedly do not rust, and so on.

If, with a strong impact from the bottom, the metal device bends only a little, then the plastic one can not only crack, but also shatter into pieces. And if this happens, then, unfortunately, there are no guarantees that the plastic piece will not get stuck in some pipe of the cooling system. Therefore, draw conclusions and do not buy the cheapest products. More details about the installation are shown in the video.

Crankcase protection for Lada Granta: what to look for when choosing

Our catalog presents pallet protection made of different materials, which determine the thickness of the product and its cost. The thicker the protection, the stronger and more durable it is. You can purchase from us:

  1. Steel protection is the simplest, most durable, inexpensive and almost universal, because... Fits most modern cars.
  2. Aluminum protection is much lighter, stronger and more durable than steel, and accordingly costs a little more.
  3. Titanium protection is by far the most durable and reliable. It is easy to install and performs its protective function perfectly.
  4. Composite protection is a good alternative to metal products. It is light in weight, durable and safe, able to independently restore its shape after an impact.

Crankcase protection features

Crankcase protection and automatic transmission protection are very important elements of auto tuning for the modern motorist. They provide the necessary level of shock protection in case of damage to the engine and its components. These products also prevent the ingress of moisture and the adhesion of dirt in the engine compartment. The presented products were made of a unique durable material, which is at the same time quite flexible. Therefore, they can be characterized as reliable and durable. And this gives them such important qualities as maintainability, increased rigidity, and the possibility of applying additional stiffeners to their surface. The latter procedure provides the protection with a greater level of resistance to mechanical damage. In addition, the products can be equipped with additional holes that will serve to blow the engine. The differences between the crankcase protections, which were made of ordinary and reinforced steel, are in their thickness and, as a result, in the level of rigidity. You should choose protection based on where your car is most often used.

Video “Correct installation”

This video, using the Skoda Octavia as an example, shows how to install a tray on your car yourself.

Today there is a lot of talk among car enthusiasts about the need to install additional crankcase protection. On the one hand, it provides reliable protection against impacts and dirt. And on the other? There are a number of experts who consider this protection to be an absolutely unnecessary element for a car. Moreover, there is an opinion that plates made of composite materials or steel are harmful to the vehicle. So what should we believe?

The first thing that scares car enthusiasts away from this product is, of course, the cost. You will have to pay about 100 USD for metal protection, 100-150 USD for composite protection, and about 60 USD for plastic protection. The second important point is the need to drill additional holes (in some cases). If this must be done, then it is better to refuse protection. Drilled elements will corrode much faster.

Main types of car crankcase protection

As already mentioned, there are three types of crankcase protection - composite, metal and plastic. The latter’s task is only to protect against dirt. As for the metal and composite product, it can protect the engine crankcase from impacts. Among car enthusiasts, steel protection is most widespread. But the best option is to use protection made of galvanized metal treated with polymer powder coating. The advantages of such a product include a fairly strict appearance and durability. Many inexperienced car enthusiasts confuse composite and plastic protection. It is not right. Composite protection is even stronger than steel, but in appearance it is similar to a plastic product.

Pros and cons of crankcase protection

Installing a steel crankcase protection is justified only in one case, when the car enthusiast very often has to drive along a broken country road. If such “difficulties” are not encountered on the road, then such an addition can only do harm. So what happens? On the one hand, engine protection is good. But there will also be a lot of troubles.

The main problem with such protective devices is the lack of technological holes that would allow oil changes. Often it is simply unrealistic to do this without removing the protection. Consequently, you will have to additionally fork out a certain amount that the service station workers demand for additional work.

The crankcase protection is not always of high quality, so while driving, resonance may occur, which will inevitably lead to the appearance of various unpleasant sounds. If the protection catches the crankcase, this can even lead to damage to the latter.

If your car had high ground clearance, then you can forget about it. Installing protection significantly reduces this indicator. Consequently, while driving on uneven roads, the engine will, of course, be protected, but the likelihood of getting stuck “on the belly” increases significantly.

And even that's not all. Modern foreign cars are assembled in such a way that during an accident the driver and passengers can count on maximum safety. In some cases, the engine must completely change its location, for example, during a frontal impact. Having the guard in place will prevent the vehicle from deforming properly during a crash, which compromises safety. Some manufacturers try to provide crankcase protection, which acts as an original accessory.

So is it necessary to install crankcase protection or is it not necessary? If your engine needs to install such an addition, then it is better to give preference to composite protection, because at least it does not reduce ground clearance. But it would still be wrong for the body to deform in the event of an accident.

We install crankcase protection on a Lada Granta car with our own hands

As you know, bad roads can be merciless to vehicles. Regular off-road driving not only kills the chassis, but can also harm the engine. In this case, installing a crankcase protection would be a reasonable solution. You will find below how to do this correctly on a Lada Granta car with a traditional body and a liftback, as well as a video of installation of the crankcase protection.

Removing and installing engine protection Grants and Kalina 2

Engine protection (mudguard) protects the engine compartment from contamination and also serves as a power protection for the engine crankcase. The standard engine protection does not inspire confidence, so it is replaced with a more durable one. Do you know how to replace engine protection on Kalina 2 and Grant?

You will need : 8" and 10" socket heads.

The engine splash guard consists of three parts: the bottom and two sides. To remove the lower part you need to:

  1. Remove the two rear mounting bolts.
  2. Remove the four front mounting bolts.
  3. Remove engine protection.
  4. Bolt layout.

Installing the engine protection is done in the reverse order.
To remove the side parts of the mudguard you need to:

  1. Remove two fastening screws.
  2. Remove the engine side splash guard.

Removing the other side protection is similar.
Installation is in the reverse order. If the car is equipped with a 21114 engine, then the mudguard consists of only two parts; its dismantling is carried out in the same way (the screws are unscrewed, the elements are dismantled). By the way, to protect the engine compartment from dirt, additional seals are installed.

What types of crankcase protection are there for the Lada Granta Liftback?

  • factory all-metal;
  • all-metal custom analogues;
  • one-piece construction made of polymer material, polyvinyl chloride.

The original armor is made of a sheet 2.0 mm thick, analogues have a thickness from 2.0 to 3.5 mm, depending on the material and technical characteristics.

The methods for fixing the plates are identical: with four bolts around the perimeter of the sheet in the standard holes. The exception is extended protection. They are fixed from the back to the lower suspension mount (silent block).

Reviews

Positive
1.Vladislav: despite numerous complaints about the quality of the factory plate, after purchasing Granta he did not change it. I've been going here for two years now, no complaints. A moderate driving style is the key to safety.
2.Konstantin: I agree with the statements that the standard pallet plate is thin, only 2.0 mm. But it is quite enough to preserve the integrity of the crankcase. Of course, driving at speeds over 100 km/h will not help.
3.Kirill: a week ago I hit a curb with my right side, I thought I damaged my armor. Everything is intact, no cracks, withstood.
4.Alexander: I’ve been driving Grant for three years now, I have no complaints about the metal plate, the quality is good, despite the thickness of only 2.0 mm.
5.Victor: A lot has happened in four years of using the car. Scratches, impacts, and dents are visible on the surface of the “armor,” but there are no cracks.
Negative
1.Ignat: I don’t recommend factory armor, it’s too thin. After purchasing the car, I installed a new one, 3.0 mm thick.
2.Vyacheslav: the impact at low speed caused a dent in the metal sheet. What kind of quality are we talking about, only a replacement by another manufacturer.
3.Vasily: I don’t see the point in standard armor, it’s not sealed, it’s open on the sides. I installed a custom one, with rubber inserts - anthers, a completely different matter.

Conclusion

The oil pan protection on the vehicle must always be installed. At the personal discretion of the owner, this can be a standard design or a custom version made of polymer. Everyone chooses independently based on the cost of the accessory.

Rules for choosing protection

Standard underbody protection

The Lada Granta engine crankcase protection is manufactured using modern painting equipment and high-strength metal. The finished product is subjected to chemical treatment:

  • degreasing;
  • phosphating.

The use of modern powder coatings makes it possible to achieve high corrosion resistance, including scratch resistance. Factory radiator protection is installed in standard holes using special fasteners. This does not damage the paintwork. It is recommended to install this structure using galvanized fasteners.

Such a product must have ventilation holes that prevent disturbances in the temperature regime of the engine and exhaust system. Installation of factory crankcase protection on the Lada Granta is carried out on an inspection pit or a lift.

First, the structure is aligned along the technological holes. Then it is fixed with bolts. The functions of this system are as follows.

  1. Protection of the motor from damage.
  2. Preventing debris from entering the engine compartment.

Before you buy a product, you need to find out its purpose:

  • for automatic transmission;
  • for manual gearbox.

Reasons for dismantling

The viburnum is installed on a lift and is ready to dismantle the protection

There are quite a few reasons why it is necessary to remove the engine protection (also called crankcase protection or engine splash guard). Some Kalina owners don’t even know why and why dismantling is necessary.

So, let's look at the main reasons why engine protection is removed:

Replacement of the part itself due to its deformation due to hitting an obstacle. Replacing or removing the front bumper will require removing the protection. Changing the oil in the engine or gearbox. Removing the engine or other engine components. Repair and restoration work on the front part of the body. Replacement of timing elements, starter or other parts that require access from below. Other operations that require dismantling the protection.

So, the main reasons have been considered, and you can begin the preparation process.

What you need

To dismantle and install the engine protection, you will need a Phillips screwdriver and a 10mm socket (wrench). When the tools are prepared, you can proceed directly to the process, which will take an average of 10 minutes.

Unprotection process

Removal of the Lada Kalina engine protection takes place on a pit or a lift, so you should worry in advance about the availability of such a place

It is advisable that the machine is cooled down, since one careless movement can lead to burns.

Recommendations for choosing an accessory for the Lada Granta Liftback

When choosing manufacturers, give preference to original designs. With a greater degree of probability, we can claim 100% compatibility of fasteners - bolt holes.

Purchasing custom protections does not always guarantee compatibility in terms of fasteners, width, and length. Often, owners independently finish the holes to fit the mounting bolts.

The choice of manufacturer depends on the owner’s decision and the cost of the part.

Service center technicians recommend purchasing accessories with factory stamping and stiffeners. This design is stronger than all-sheet analogues.
