At the same time, the new product received not only a fifth door, but also an updated design, an improved braking system, different suspension settings, and became more comfortable than a sedan. The second most important source of savings is manufacturability. For example, the front bumper of Granta has three times fewer parts than the same unit of Kalina. The Granta doors have five times fewer decorative parts than the Kalina, and the instrument panel has about 1.5 times less decorative parts. Thus, the labor intensity of assembly has been reduced. Renault's experience in creating a model for developing countries - the Renault Logan - is clearly visible here. At one time, it was Logan that was the first foreign car to noticeably supplant VAZ in Russia.

Finally, foreigners taught VAZ to make “empty” cars, as a common expression among car enthusiasts goes. This means that the car may be richly equipped, but the base version (the one offered at the promotional price) is essentially a combination of engine, body and chassis - and nothing more. So, in the basic version of Granta, even the glass and mirrors are not athermal, but simple. The bumpers are not painted, there is no audio system, no ABS, no airbags, no power steering.

True, even with this, Granta is much more comfortable than the classics. Fewer trim parts mean less noise. Due to poor fit of parts and rattling, Volga cars received the collective nickname “basins”, which, quite possibly, will die out with the advent of Granta.
