At the end of 2021, the management of the VAZ concern intrigued car enthusiasts with future new products in the Lada Granta model range. The presentation was planned for autumn 2021.
For a number of objective reasons, the performance was postponed to the beginning of 2021. But the main new products for 2021 - 2019 are already reliably known.
New body options
- Lada Granta sedan: dynamics and efficiency;
- Lada Granta liftback: functionality and quality;
- Lada Granta station wagon: spacious and ready to travel.
These are the slogans prescribed for each of the models. The cost of the modifications is not reliably known, but it can be assumed that the differences will be insignificant.
Otherwise, few people will buy a domestic brand if for the same money you can buy a French Renault Logan.
The updated Granta liftback sedan will appear in a completely new “X-Ray” body. We have already seen something similar with the Lada Vesta. In addition to the two body modifications, a station wagon will also be added, also with an “X-Ray” front part.
Despite the body update, the power units remained at the same level - from the great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers of the VAZ-2108, 2109, 21099. Such developments are somewhat upsetting, since something new could have been developed over such a long period. There were rumors about a completely new type of engine with a volume of 1.4 liters and 16 valves with a pre-installed turbocharger. But this remained at the level of rumors.
New body Lada Granta Liftback 2021: equipment, price and photo
Lada Granta is a class B liftback with a front-wheel drive transmission. This car was presented at the end of spring in 2014, and the concept itself appeared at the show in March 2013. In order to create a liftback, Grant's design was thoroughly redesigned. Domestic designers noted the fact that the body was strengthened and its rigidity became twice as high as that of the Lada Samara, and they also redesigned the rear doors. The production of this car began in the Russian city of Izhevsk.
But the latest news about the Lada Granta Liftback 2021 says that the latest model from the domestic auto industry will be produced in Tolyatti. This is precisely the statement made by the management of the Russian manufacturer in December last year. They also reported production details, namely that this model will be produced at Kalina - the name of the assembly and body production.
It was officially announced when the Lada Granta Liftback 2021 will be released in Russia, namely in the designated model year – 2018.
The previous model comes in eight different colors, namely: black, white, silver, dark cherry, light blue, silver dark gray, blue and golden brown. At the same time, models of all colors except white cost six thousand rubles more. Perhaps the new Granta model will be presented in the same colors as its predecessor. Also, in the 2021 modification, various configurations are announced, with automatic transmission and manual transmission.

The power units work in tandem with a five-speed manual / four-speed automatic transmission. By the way, manual transmission/automatic transmission is fully compatible with Japanese Nissan and Datsun. The sports version of the Lada Granta remained unchanged: 1.6 liters / 118 hp, gas-filled shock absorbers, cost from half a million rubles.

The planned modernization also affected the Grant model in the liftback body. One of the main advantages is the new X-face, which all restyled new products are endowed with.
The front optics now look new. She became more expressive. The radiator grille is aggressive and has acquired a sporty fit. The windshield sprayers were removed from the hood and moved to the body part, closer to the wipers.
The wings became streamlined, extensive, with a certain muscularity. we occupy 35% of the entire area of the radiator grille. The lower contour of the bumper is completed by chrome inserts in the shape of boomerangs. Something similar has already been observed in Vesta and Xray. The rear of the updated Granta liftback 2021 remained without obvious changes, with the exception of the protruding “Lada” nameplate. The bumper pumped up slightly and became sportier.
The safety system remains at the same level: one front airbag on the steering wheel. A standard immobilizer and ABS are already included as standard. The updated Grant liftback differs from its predecessors in three modifications:
- Standard: light alloy wheels 13;
- Standard Plus: bumper painted in the main body color;
- Classic: fabric seat upholstery.
It is expected that the cost of “Classic” is from 440,000 rubles, modifications “Standard” and “Standard Plus” are several tens of thousands cheaper.
For an additional fee, the model will be equipped with 14" alloy wheels, an audio radio, two speakers, and a navigation system.
It is not known for certain, but another version of the Lada Granta liftback restyling 2021 is expected - “Lux”, costing from half a million rubles. For so much money, the buyer will receive a visor, heated seats, and a heated windshield. As well as a 106 horsepower engine and a robotic automatic machine.
In all other respects, no changes: portable ashtray, central locking, electric drive of double-glazed windows, electric drive of rear-view mirrors. As part of an individual package, you can install zone climate control, light and rain sensors, and a parking sensor system.

Conclusion Every product has its own buyer - so says popular wisdom. For some car enthusiasts the car is good, for others not so much. In the price category up to 450,000 rubles (as of September 17, 2018), you couldn’t find a better offer.
If you systematically undergo maintenance, fill in good oils and high-octane fuel, then the car will last for decades. For offers from Renault, Peugeot and other foreign brands, you need to pay an additional 100,000 rubles, which not everyone can afford.
Restyling Grants - now “unconnected”
Have you seen Kalinas with a fitted front end from Grants? This kind of “homemade” is popularly called grantalin. Now there is less room for creativity: Kalina is officially no more, all compact cars from Tolyatti are called Grants - and they have an updated appearance in the spirit of Vesta. But this is not the main news of renaming and restyling!
The update brought Granta one and a half hundred new parts, but there are only four really serious changes - and for some reason AvtoVAZ hardly talks about them. Everyone has already seen the front in the style of Vesta with slightly slanted headlights and chrome mustaches on the bumper, someone noticed a more upturned edge of the hood, pile fender liners screwed with self-tapping screws into the body iron and an electromechanical trunk opening button (it now has no cylinder for the key, but instead of an emblem large inscription LADA).

But the main news is under the hood, or rather, under the cylinder heads of all three engines. This is the eight-valve 1.6 (87 hp), its 16-valve variation (98 hp), and another engine with variable intake receiver length (106 hp), which evokes nostalgia for the “eighth” family. So, they now have Federal Mogul pistons with counterbores for the full stroke of the valves: if the timing belt breaks, they will no longer meet. “No problem”, gentlemen! What all buyers of Togliatti cars have dreamed of since the appearance of the lightweight connecting rod and piston group in 2007. Now it’s like in the nineties: carry a strap with you, and if it breaks, an hour of work on the side of the road will fix all the problems.
For the most advanced Grant engine VAZ-21129, a decorative cover was not found - but this way the growth of the mechanism for changing the length of the intake receiver is better visible. Pay attention to the shock absorber support with an offset axis - the castor of the Grant in the Lux configuration is increased to three degrees
However, this is not a fact. After all, Gates belts have failed very few people - the whole problem is in the rollers and pump, which are supplied by TZA, the Togliatti Automotive Units Plant. They used to jam at a ridiculous 30-40 thousand kilometers. But even if you have to call a tow truck, the repairs will be cheaper than before. By the way, bent valves did not spare our editorial Kalina with an eight-valve engine. The belt on it snapped at 60 thousand. And since Vesta has the same 1.6 engines, repairing the head in the event of a break does not threaten it either.
Otherwise, the Grants have changed cosmetically. The good instrument panel with green backlighting was replaced with an even nicer one with white lighting; the buttons on the center console also have the same glow. The comfortable driver's seat with height adjustment has returned. This seat has a difficult fate: two years ago it appeared on the assembly line, but then it was quickly “optimized.” And here is a second chance, almost like Daniil Kvyat had at Toro Rosso.
The retouched instrument panel is attractive and easy to read. The coolant temperature can be displayed on the screen. The backlight of the scales and all buttons in the cabin changed from green to white
Prices? The basic sedan has risen in price by ten thousand and now costs 420 thousand rubles, but the cars that you see in the photo are much more expensive. A liftback with an automatic transmission in the Lux configuration costs 610 thousand, and a sedan with a manual transmission costs 570 thousand. At the same time, the four-door has a stabilization system, but the liftback does not. And alas, AvtoVAZ is still shy about the AMT robotic gearbox, although it works well with the new firmware. We talked about this in detail in the previous issue of Autoreview, and I will try to compare the AMT-2 and the Jatco “automatic” in absentia.
In a large city and heavy traffic, as before, the automatic transmission is more pleasant: it shifts down quickly and adapts easily. Sometimes even too much: as soon as you press the gas harder once, Granta hangs in second gear. But outside the city, four gears are no longer enough - and overtaking a truck turns into a problem: after 80 km/h, even with the gas pedal on the floor, the automatic transmission remains in third and the dynamics are completely sad. So outside the city, AMT is already more appropriate.
Along with the update, Grant received a central console composed of Kalinov elements. The microclimate unit is more advanced than the previous sticky handles, but they could be used blindly. The height-adjustable seats are comfortable - the ergonomics of the Granta are noticeably better than those of the Logan
And the old hydromechanics are also more voracious: during quiet driving without overtaking, the consumption turned out to be one liter higher than with the “handle”. But if you drive more actively, the difference increases to two liters! So it’s good that for Vesta the alternative to the “robot” will be not a classic “automatic”, but a CVT. And that it already has a stabilization system as standard.
And Granta has a stabilization system - for an extra charge even in the Luxury package!
Yes, a liftback without a stabilization system cannot be called dangerous: a skid still needs to be provoked, then it develops smoothly - and it’s easy to extinguish it. If, of course, you know how to do it, and not get confused in an emergency situation. But as hundreds of videos from dashcams show, few people succeed in this. Meanwhile, the Bosch stabilization system is perfectly tuned and effectively dampens slip and speed. Just for safety!
The edge of the hood closest to the windshield received a more upturned profile, and the jet washer nozzles moved to a plastic frill
So instead of Granta, I recommend Vesta.
And not only because of the need to pay extra for ESP. The main thing is that the Granta has a disgusting reactive action; on bumps, the steering wheel is shaken by impacts, and the car turns reluctantly. And here, alas, restyling did not bring anything new.
Comfort-wise, at first glance, everything is not bad: in the Grant Lux, which has the maximum area of soundproofing mats, it is unexpectedly quiet up to 120 km/h. Perhaps even quieter than in the new Solaris. But the ride quality of a liftback with an automatic transmission is so-so. A heavier gearbox is paired with stiffer front springs, and the two-box body transmits more vibrations. Add here the stiffer shock absorbers with index 21928, which are installed on Grants in expensive trim levels, and you get constant shaking and too obvious transmission of sharp irregularities. A sedan with the same suspension is more comfortable. Of course, both Grants have no problems with energy consumption, and an honest 175 mm of ground clearance turns them into real crossovers.
Grant Lux has 15-inch wheels with Pirelli P7 tires, and all versions now have tufted fender liners all around
But Vesta has the same huge ground clearance, and the ride is smoother and sound insulation is better. The rear seats are much more spacious, and the trunk is no smaller than that of the Granta sedan. At the same time, the basic Vesta costs 570 thousand rubles! And the new Grant headlights, which were developed by the Indian company Neolite ZKW and produced by the Uzbek-Korean joint venture UzChasis, turned out to be not so hot. With a single H4 standard bulb, the low beam turned out to be too low - thanks at least that the roadside was well lit. And the distant one does not have enough beam width - the lighting is too tunnel-like. It remains with sadness to remember Kalina’s magnificent headlights with two lamps each.

It is clear that the demand for the Grant is high - primarily for inexpensive configurations up to 500 thousand rubles. Vesta no longer competes with them, and I will not dissuade you from buying. Yes, such a Grant does not have a stabilization system, but among the available new cars there is also no alternative in terms of cost of maintenance and set of consumer qualities. But if for some reason you are thinking about Grant Lux, then try Vesta first. Believe me, there is a gulf between these cars. Even though they look so similar from the front now.
