Why install an enlarged damper?
The size of the standard throttle is 46 mm and is considered the narrowest point in the air path of the car. If you install a throttle with a larger diameter, the passage opening will increase, and accordingly there will be more air flow, which means the engine power will increase.
There are many options for oversized throttle bodies on the aftermarket tuning market, from “52” to “58” sizes. It all depends on the purpose of the installation. For example, on a standard engine without modifications, it makes sense to set the throttle to “52 mm” or “54 mm”. And more or “58” is used for engines with increased engine capacity.
If you put 54 throttle on a standard engine, it won’t get better , but it’s quite likely to get worse. When installing it, you will need to be more careful with the gas pedal, because if previously, when you lightly pressed the gas, the throttle valve opened by 10-15 percent, then with an increased throttle it will be by 20-25%. This will lead to jerking at low speeds!
The enlarged damper comes from motorsport, when it was installed on sports cars not at random, but based on performance. First, the engine is made, power indicators are taken, and if there is a lack of air entering the engine, an oversized throttle valve is installed. If you install it on a standard engine, then it’s money thrown away. After all, the air supply with a standard throttle size is quite enough.
Is there any point in flushing the throttle body?
If we are talking about an increased throttle, then we should not forget about such an operation as flushing the throttle valve. During operation, dirt accumulates on it, which over time leads to worse response to the gas pedal. Even after the throttle flushing operation, the car begins to drive better , which has been tested in practice.
Maybe then the effect of an increased throttle valve can be explained by the fact that instead of a dirty valve we install a new and clean one? Then, before buying a new large throttle body, it is better to first wash the standard throttle body of dirt. This operation will not take much time, you just need to buy a can of “carburetor cleaner”, remove the throttle and rinse it thoroughly. Never use WD-40 to flush the throttle body!
About the zero gear and the enlarged damper
About the zero resistance filter, we can say that it is a useful thing if it is installed correctly. For proper operation, you need to make a cold intake, otherwise it will take hot air from under the hood. In this case, a standard air filter that takes air from a low point under the hood is preferable.
If you want to install a zero, then do a cold intake. This is easy to do, as the most affordable option - take an aluminum corrugation for 80-100 mm air ducts, attach one end to the air filter housing, and the other at the point where the air will be cooler. As a rule, this is far from the car radiator, closer to the wheel.
Quite a lot of people who want to increase the power of their car resort to such a simple method of engine tuning as an increased throttle valve. Why is it needed at all, it allows you to pass more air per unit of time. Our engine is essentially a pump that pumps air, the easier it is for it to do this, the greater the engine power output will be, for these purposes three methods are used - an increased throttle valve - a low-resistance filter (nulevik) - an exhaust system (almost everyone installs a direct-flow can at the exhaust )
Today we’ll talk about the first part, the throttle valve itself. The internal diameter of the VAZ factory throttle body is 46-49 mm depending on the engine type, it looks like this
Modified throttles have an internal diameter of 50 - 56 mm made from dampers produced by VAZ; it is also possible to install a throttle assembly from GAZ through alterations, a fairly common option. The valves based on the VAZ look like this; they do not raise any questions during installation; they are installed in place of the factory one without any modifications. It is advisable to turn off the throttle heating, as experience shows there is no need for it. In the case of a plastic receiver, this will give you absolutely nothing, but if a metal receiver is installed, turning off the heating of the throttle assembly will allow you to slightly reduce the temperature of the intake air, which has a positive effect on the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. When cleaning is required
It is recommended to clean the damper every 65 thousand kilometers. But how can you determine that the unit needs it now, even though you have driven no more than 40 thousand kilometers?
There are several symptoms that can help you accurately determine the need to clean the damper:
- The engine starts every once in a while;
- At idle, the speed starts to jump;
- The engine starts, but immediately stalls spontaneously;
- The crankshaft rotates at an increased frequency;
- At low speed the car seems to jerk.
Cleaning methods
There are two ways to clean the throttle valve for a VAZ 2114 car:
Each of them deserves separate consideration.
Surface cleaning
The easiest way that does not require virtually any knowledge in the field of car repair and disassembly. There is no need to disassemble the damper itself, because this option is preferred by almost all beginners who are just beginning to learn the joys of self-repair.
The procedure for superficial cleaning of the throttle valve is as follows:
- Remove the corrugation from the throttle valve;
- Treat interior surfaces with your chosen cleaning product. Better than WD40;
- Go over the knot with a brush. Just don’t use metal ones;
- Wipe off any accumulated dirt with a dry cloth;
- Carry out similar activities on the reverse side of the damper;
- Reinstall all removed items.
Let’s say right away that this method cannot be called effective. It’s not called superficial for nothing. This tells us that all the internal components of the unit will still remain dirty. Therefore, the symptoms are unlikely to disappear.
Deep flushing
In most cases, you will not be able to fix the problem without deep cleaning. Plus, it is still recommended to check the throttle position sensor on the VAZ 2114, since the reason for the violation of the proportions of the air-fuel mixture may lie in it.
From a set of materials and tools you will need:
- The almighty WD40;
- Crosshead screwdriver;
- Dry rags;
- Throttle valve gasket (for 1.5 liter engine);
- Receiver O-ring (for a 1.6-liter engine);
- Spanners;
- Two M13 bolts;
- Ear cotton swabs.
A fairly inexpensive set, each item from which will be useful to you. Therefore, it is better to immediately collect everything you need and get to work.
- Remove the entire throttle assembly. To do this, remove the corrugation from the filter, turn off the antifreeze pipe (here you will need M13 bolts to close the pipes). There is no need to drain the antifreeze, as many recommend. Just try to disconnect the pipes as quickly as possible and plug the holes with bolts.
- Now the adsorber pipe is removed.
- You have completed the most difficult stage, so it will be easier further. Remove the assembly fasteners, disconnect the cable from the gas pedal. This will allow you to remove the throttle body.
- After removing the unit, disassemble it into parts. The first are two sensors - TPS and IAC. They must be thoroughly cleaned using the products indicated in the previous section. If you don't have WD40, use alternative solutions.
- Rinse the damper thoroughly from all sides, blow out the holes, which will allow all internal components to dry properly.
- Now all you have to do is assemble the assembly in reverse order. This is not difficult to do if there are no problems with disassembly.
- Don't forget the gaskets or rings. There is no point in cleaning them from dirt, so immediately replace the old ones with new ones. Do not confuse which element is suitable for which VAZ 2114 engine size. Many people manage to put the ring where the gasket should be, or vice versa.
How to properly clean and flush the throttle valve?
Before you clean the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114, you need to purchase a suitable product for this. WD40 is most often used, but MEDIC, FluxOff, CTEPUP, etc. are also suitable (any liquid for flushing carburetors will do).
It is important that the DZ cleaning product is aerosol and includes a special thin tube that allows you to reach the most remote channels.
Cleaning the unit can be either superficial (without removing the unit) or complete.
Each method has its own characteristics, namely:
Surface method - to perform this you will need a cleaning agent, a rag and a soft brush. All accessible elements of the remote control are coated with the product and left in this form for 10-15 minutes. After this, use a brush to remove all dirt and carefully wipe all parts with a soft cloth. Further operation of the car is possible after the DZ has completely dried.
It should be noted that the effectiveness of this method is low, since it is impossible to obtain full access to all elements without removing the assembly.
Complete cleaning - involves removing the unit, cleaning, as well as replacing the seal and O-ring.
After removing the damper, its surface is sprayed several times (depending on the degree of contamination of the part from 3 to 5) with a cleaning agent. The whole process will take about 30-40 minutes. Particular care should be taken to apply the product to all calibrated channels, since it is in them that carbon deposits accumulate the most. All dirt is removed with a soft brush, and then the parts are wiped dry with a rag.
After complete cleaning, the assembly is assembled in the reverse order to that given above (to remove the remote control).
Please note that with any method of cleaning the throttle body, you should not use metal brushes, as they can significantly damage the surfaces.
Car service nuances
It's no secret that many car owners prefer repairs at service stations. There are many reasons for this.
But there are several nuances that should be taken into account when visiting a service station.
- In addition to cleaning the damper, the technicians will begin to assure you that additional cleaning of a number of components is required, as if without this the repair will not be complete and the effect will not be achieved. All this is a banal attempt to charge you more money for unnecessary work.
- They may start telling you that the damper is cleaned every 15, or even 10 thousand kilometers, they will offer their services, maybe even provide a discount as a regular customer. Again, the simplest trick. This figure is completely untrue. The frequency of cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114 car recommended by the manufacturer is 60-70 thousand kilometers. But in practice it turns out to be about 50-60 thousand kilometers. You just need to monitor the condition of the unit and pay attention to the symptoms of contamination that we have already introduced you to today.
Whether to do the work yourself or have it done at a car service center is entirely up to you. The most important thing is not to let the problem get worse, as it can result in really expensive repairs.
Cleaning the throttle valve of VAZ 2114-2115.
In this article you will learn how to clean the valve, throttle body with your own hands. The work is not dusty and does not require special skills and knowledge.
It’s worth noting right away that there are no fundamental differences in performing this work on different VAZ models, the principle is the same - remove the throttle assembly, take a special liquid and spray it on the valve. In rare cases, you have to make more effort and rub the throttle with cotton swabs or even a toothbrush.
As always, before we begin, a few words about what a throttle valve is, why it gets dirty and how to understand that the throttle valve needs to be cleaned. So let's get started.
What is a throttle valve?
The throttle valve (VV) is an integral part of the fuel system of a gasoline engine. The main task of the DZ is the dosage of air supply, which enters the cylinders to form a combustible mixture. The throttle body is located after the air filter and before the intake manifold. Simply put, the air valve is an air valve that regulates the air supply. When the throttle valve opens, excess pressure in the intake system disappears; when it closes, negative pressure forms in the system. Every time you press the gas pedal, the throttle opens or closes, since the throttle valve is connected to the throttle cable.
When is it necessary to clean the throttle valve?
It is recommended to clean the remote control every 60-70 thousand km. mileage or if signs of throttle contamination appear.
Signs of a dirty throttle body and the need to clean the throttle body:
- Poor engine starting, stalls while driving;
- Increased crankshaft speed;
- Floating idle speed;
- Jerking while driving at low and medium speeds.
Causes of throttle valve contamination:
- Air. Although it is filtered by an air filter, it still contains dust.
- Oiling and crankcase gases. These two substances form an oily coating on the throttle body, preventing the normal operation of the throttle assembly. The damper begins to open and close poorly (poor response to the gas pedal).
How to flush the throttle valve of a VAZ 2114-2115.
There are two types of cleaning - with and without removal. The first method involves doing the following:
1. Disconnect the air filter bellows, remove the coolant pipes, as well as the adsorber pipe. The coolant pipes must be bolted or bent and clamped to prevent coolant from spilling out.
2. Next, you need to disconnect the throttle control mount, remove the throttle cable and remove the throttle assembly.
3. After the throttle is removed, it is necessary to remove the sensors (IAC, TPS) and clean them.
4. Next, using WD-40 or a special liquid for cleaning the carburetor (for example ABRO), we clean the rear brake. This is done simply, you need to apply the composition to the valve, as well as the inner surface of the throttle and let the special tool do its job. After a few minutes everything will be clean, but if the result does not satisfy you, clean again, using cotton swabs or a toothbrush.
Attention! Never use sharp metal objects!
When should you clean your throttle body?
As a preventive measure, it is recommended to periodically clean the remote control (every 65-70 thousand km of vehicle mileage). However, some signs may tell the driver that the damper is dirty and requires cleaning now.
Among these signs are:
- problems with starting the engine (especially in the cold). At the same time, the smell of gasoline may come from the exhaust pipe of the car;
- noticeable reduction in engine power;
- increased fuel consumption;
- instability of idle speed;
- jerks when driving a car at low speed, etc.
The main reasons that lead to throttle valve contamination are:
- Insufficient filtration of incoming air by the air filter - the smallest particles of dirt and dust penetrating through the filter settle on the elements of the emergency protection, affecting their mobility. In this case, the flow area of the chamber for passing the air mixture decreases.
- Oiling.
- Crankcase gases.
The last two factors cause the formation of an oily coating on the elements of the throttle body and, as a result, form a poor response to the accelerator pedal (due to the deterioration of the throttle assembly). Regardless of the reasons that led to the blockage of the remote control, it is not difficult to restore normal operation of the car engine. To do this, you need to remove this unit and clean it.
Types of sensors for VAZ 2114
The resistive throttle sensor of the VAZ 2114 is the simplest and cheapest, but it has a huge disadvantage - the sensitive part wears off over time, and at idle the speed becomes unstable. Among this type of devices, the most popular ones are the TPD of the Kursk and Kursk companies. According to reviews from motorists, these sensors last a long time and are highly reliable. But these parameters are higher for contactless devices, for example, those produced by Avtoelektrika. There is no resistive layer - there is nothing to wear out, therefore, reliability and service life become higher.
Price of throttle sensors for VAZ 2114:
- Resistive - from 130 rubles.
- Contactless - about 300-500.
The TPS is located directly on the throttle mechanism, secured to it with bolts. The axes of the sensor and the damper are in the same plane.
Throttle sensor VAZ 2114: malfunctions
As you understand, symptoms of a breakdown can appear at any time. And they are very similar to those that happen when air flow, detonation, XX, and other sensors fail. Here is the main list:
- Idle speed is unstable.
- If you suddenly release the gas pedal, the engine stops. It also stalls when changing from one speed to another.
- Often the car jerks at any one position of the accelerator pedal. This is usually the starting position.
- No idle.
When diagnosing, be sure to take into account the possibility of failure of the XX sensor, because all these symptoms also appear when it breaks down. To make sure the TPS is working properly, you need:
- Multimeter.
- Two wires in insulation. Length no more than 50 cm.
The verification procedure looks like this:
- Find the VAZ 2114 throttle position sensor in the engine compartment.
- Disconnect the block with wires from the TPS.
- Connect the positive terminal of the voltmeter to terminal “A” on the block.
- Negative terminal to the “—” of the battery or to the body.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Monitor the device readings. When the voltage value is close to zero, one can judge the serviceability of the TPS and the presence of a breakdown in the electrical circuit or ECU. If the voltage is close to 5 V, then the sensor is faulty.
- If the sensor fails, there is no point in repairing it! Install the new one and forget about it!
Now you know how to check the TPS on your car. Let's move on directly to repair and replacement.
About the zero gear and the enlarged damper
About the zero resistance filter, we can say that it is a useful thing if installed correctly.
For proper operation, you need to make a cold intake, otherwise it will take hot air from under the hood. A standard air filter, which takes air from a low point under the hood, is preferable. If you want to install a zero, then do a cold intake. The most affordable option is to take an 80-100 mm aluminum corrugation for air ducts, attach one end to the air filter housing, and the other at the point where the air is cooler. As a rule, this is far from the car radiator, closer to the wheel.
From personal experience I was convinced that installing an enlarged throttle valve and a “nulevik” gives a good effect. There is more sharpness in the operation of the gas pedal, and you feel confident when overtaking. But the effect is so small that it’s not worth talking about some mythical percentage increase in power. Especially about improving the car’s acceleration time.
Sensor replacement procedure
The sensor is fastened using two screws. Use a screwdriver to unscrew them and carefully remove them from the axle. When you install a new part, be sure to ensure that the socket is directed towards the partition (toward the driver). The finale is fastening with screws. As you can see, there is nothing complicated, now you will need a simple adjustment of the VAZ 2114 throttle sensor. It is done like this:
- The throttle valve opens fully. If something interferes with movement, then the TPS is set incorrectly. Rotate its body 90 degrees. and re-fasten.
- Before starting the engine, turn off the power to the car for 10-15 minutes. After all these manipulations, the engine should run smoothly.
That's all, this completes the replacement and adjustment of the VAZ 2114 TPS. It is worth noting that in most cases there is no need for adjustments; the device starts working without problems after startup.
