What to do if the fog lights on a VAZ 2114 do not work

24.12.2014

Fog lights

But it happens that at a certain moment the PTFs stop working, and you need to urgently look for the fault. In this article we will look at the main possible causes of fog lamp (FTL) failures and methods for eliminating them.

The most basic and common option is oxidation and corrosion, which appear during long-term operation and in the Russian climate. But still, we will touch on specific problems and start from the simplest to the most complex.

Fuse

VAZ 2114 fuses
Each fog lamp has a separate fuse F8 and F9 in a block rated at 7.5 A. Check its integrity and replace if necessary. If you did not find a fuse in the mounting block, most likely, in your case, the PTFs were installed by the previous owner. Then you need to look either near the fog lights themselves, or near the relay. If both headlights do not work, the cause of the malfunction lies elsewhere. Since it is not possible for both fuses to blow at the same time. Although everything happens in our lives.

Bulbs in PTF burnt out

In this case, all that remains is to check and replace. When you remove the lamp and look, the filament may visually remain intact, so it is better to check with a known working light bulb. Again, if both fog lights fail, this is most likely not your case.

Relay

The relay is either located in the mounting block or installed in another location if the PTFs were not equipped at the factory. The easiest option is to replace and test with a known working relay. You can also try knocking on it. When you turn on the PTF button, the relay should click. If it is not there, it is worth replacing the element. But it is necessary to check for access to power, which may not be supplied.

PTF power button

It may also fail. Changes in 1 minute.

Weight

Poor ground to the body from headlights or relays. It needs to be cleaned and secured securely.

No power supply

PTF power supply
How to make a diagnosis:

  1. Let's see if there is power to the PTF button. If the power light is on, then everything is fine here.
  2. We check the relay power supply to pins 30 and 87 (see diagram). The wires go to blocks Ш7 and Ш8 of the block (they are marked).

If there is no power, you need to look for a break. Most likely, the problem in this case is trivial - the wire has fallen off or rusted.

PTF connection diagram

The power source for the fog lights is the battery (3). The wire from the positive terminal of the battery is connected to a relay (4), from which four wires come out: in the diagram, positive potentials are marked with numbers 85 and 87. Two wires come out of potential 87, which are connected through fuses (2) with a current of 7.5 A in the mounting block to the left and right PTF (1). The wires in the relay (4) are connected through a single contact, and this is the reason why both headlights turn on and off at the same time, and if the relay fails, both headlights also do not work. The wire from the positive potential 85 is connected to button 5. The negative potential 86 in the relay is connected to ground. The button, in turn, is also connected to ground by contact A. The standard factory button has a backlit display, its wiring is closed to the positive contact B.

Fuse and relay block VAZ 2107

To protect electrical wiring and electrical equipment from short circuit currents or overloads, each vehicle has a fuse and relay unit. It is mounted in an easily accessible specific location. Through electrical cable harnesses it is connected via circuits to electrical equipment and control devices. In this article we will look at the basic schemes of injection and carburetor models.

Installation of electrical equipment and fog lights on the VAZ-2114

General view of fog lights

In order to understand why the fog lights failed, you need to know a little about how the electrical equipment of the car as a whole works, as well as the connection diagram for this unit in the general electrical circuit.

So, let's look at the basic electrical equipment diagram of the VAZ-2114:

General diagram of the vehicle's electrical equipment including PTF

And also, diagrams for direct connection of fog lights.

Connection diagram to the PTF on-board network Visual diagram of the PTF connection

Reasons for failure

Now that all the electrical connection diagrams for the fog lights have been disassembled, you can proceed directly to determining the reasons for their inoperability or failure:

  • Fuse blown.
  • The light bulbs burned out.
  • Oxidation of contact connections.
  • There is no contact to ground.
  • The button doesn't work.
  • No power.
  • Incorrect connection.
  • Relay is broken.

PTF lamps do not light up (troubleshooting methods)

Now that all the reasons have been identified, we can proceed directly to considering the issue of solving the problem. For diagnostic operations you will need a tester, but for repairs you will need a set of screwdrivers, keys and some spare parts.

Now, let's look at how problems need to be solved in different cases.

Fuse blown

Fuse diagram in the mounting block

The most common problem among electrical equipment. A blown fuse breaks the electrical circuit, but at the same time protects the parts from a short circuit. It is worth noting that each headlight has its own fuse, so you need to check those marked F8 and F9 . The nominal current passing is 7.5A .

If both fog lights on the car go out at once, then you don’t have to go into the mounting block and it’s a different problem.

Burnt out light bulbs

Another common reason for fog lights not working is the bulbs burning out due to a short circuit or natural wear and tear.

New PTF lamp and socket close up

To check the serviceability of the part, we install a new lamp in the seat, and if it lights up, then the matter is definitely a failure of this particular element. As in the previous case, two lamps cannot burn out at once.

Oxidation of contact connections

Due to poor sealing, the PTF contact has oxidized

Often, another problem is that the connectors connecting the fog lights directly to the headlights become oxidized and do not make proper contact, which can cause flickering or loss of light.

In this case, the treatment method is to clean the contact group of the connectors.

No contact to ground

Ground wire from battery

The reason for the failure of the fog lights is that there is no reliable contact to ground.

This is due to the fact that the wire is exposed to the open air and is exposed to external factors, which can lead to corrosive damage. So, the method of treating a malfunction is to strip the contact connection between the wire and the ground.

The button doesn't work

During operation, the internal elements of the shutdown button are subject to wear and tear and may fail. Therefore, another step in diagnosing fog lights that are not working is the button. In this case, both headlights will not work. There are two ways to diagnose the malfunction: test the button connections with a multimeter for resistance, or install a new button and try to turn on the headlights.

Fog light switch

There is no power to the PTF chip

A faulty electrical wiring or broken wire, especially in winter, may prevent the fog lights from receiving power. In order to identify and eliminate malfunctions, you must be guided by a special wiring diagram, which is presented below.

Diagram for checking power supply of fog lights

Incorrect connection

This malfunction usually occurs when a motorist has connected the fog lights himself, but has incorrectly connected the wires to a relay or button somewhere.

To eliminate the cause of the malfunction, it is necessary to check all connections according to the PTF wiring diagram and the general electrical diagram of the vehicle.

Broken relay

In order for everything to work correctly, as in the case of headlights and brake lights, the fog lights are connected via a relay . Of course, it does not last forever - the direct current that runs through the contacts, as well as short circuits in the on-board network, can damage this element.

PTF installation kit, relay marked with arrow

Diagnostics is carried out by analogy with a button. It is necessary to either ring the contacts or install a new relay, and then check the functionality.

Failure of the fog lights themselves

The reflector is trash!

Let's look at the picture above. Since the reflector is already worn out, its “shards” penetrate into the headlight and “harm” the lamp itself. In this case, the lamp will burn out very often, and if the second headlight is in the same condition, then both will burn out at once! And the owner will be looking for the shorty!

Therefore, try to pay attention to the condition of the PTF itself.

The first frost arrived (-15 at night). The car started up in the morning without any complaints. I warmed it up properly so that the cabin was warm and set off. I drove about 3 kilometers, the lights of the instruments and devices in the cabin went out, and the outside dimensions disappeared. The low beam continues to work. He turned around and parked the car.

In the evening I looked and rang - fuses F10, F11 are intact. The button for turning on the dimensions and low beam is also intact. Low beam works. In addition to the dimensions and lighting, the fog lights and lights do not work. Pressing the brake is accompanied by illumination of the corresponding lights. The stove also works. I don’t understand what’s wrong? In Murzilka, the circuit couldn’t be simpler, almost a direct wire through the fuses. If the fuses are OK, then the fog lights should at least work (even if the lamp control relay is dead).

Maybe someone knows what the reason is? There is an option - a glitch in the connectors. But where and what are they?

Most likely it is a fuse or a button. Or, again, the block that fits the button does not make contact.

And if there are connectors, then apparently they are on the way to the nuclear reactor. There are such big pads.

Russian tuning is senseless and merciless.

    conclusions

Determining the reasons for fog lights not working on a VAZ-2114 is quite easy and simple, but not every motorist can do it. Therefore, if your understanding of auto electrics is far from complete and it is impossible to carry out diagnostics and repairs yourself, it is recommended to contact a car service center.

    Content

An element of lighting equipment such as fog lights is not mandatory for all vehicles in the series. It can be installed optionally in showrooms that sell new cars.

It is worth saying that in the conditions of the domestic climate, PTF is a very useful addition, especially considering that the main light on VAZ cars leaves much to be desired, and in rainy weather does not always provide adequate visibility on the road. Turning on the fog lights in such a situation is of great help.

    PTF VAZ 2114

Interpretation of fuses and relays of the new model, diagram, video

In terms of reliability and quality, the new version of the power supply is made taking into account modern technologies:

    1. Cylindrical fuses have been replaced by fuse links with pin contacts, which are placed on the unit board in two rows.
    2. The load value is marked on their body. The body of the fuse link is transparent and if the contact burns out, the contact break will be visible.
    3. For maintenance and replacement, a special plastic puller is used, which is attached to the body of the mounting block. Or use regular pliers to remove the block from its socket.

    PTF connection diagram

But sometimes it happens that the PTFs refuse to turn on, and either one or both headlights may not work. There can be many reasons why the fog lights on a VAZ 2114 do not light up, but the main one is the appearance of oxides or corrosion in important places in the electrical circuit leading to the headlights.

Before considering all possible causes in more detail, you should familiarize yourself with the schematic diagram of connecting fog lights to the vehicle’s on-board electrical system.

    It looks like this:

    It contains the following symbols:

    • pink rectangles 10A - 10-amp fuses;
    • F1 and F2 - fog lights;
    • grounding icon - connection to ground;
    • +12V — output to the “+” terminal of the battery.

    Renault Megane 2 fuses

The entire electronic system in the car is protected by fuses, thanks to which all equipment is reliably protected from electrical failures and various overloads. It often happens that one of the systems stops working, the reason for this is usually the failure of one of the fuses, and it needs to be changed.

If we look at the Renault Megane 2 fuse box, it is located in two places, one in the car interior on the driver’s side, the second in the engine compartment.

The main causes of PTF malfunction

The most common reasons why the VAZ 2114 fog lights do not work are as follows:

    • fuse is blown;
    • burnt out light bulb(s);
    • oxidation of contacts occurred;
    • lost contact with the “mass”;
    • the button is faulty;
    • the relay has failed.

In addition, some other, rarer reasons are possible, which we will also consider below.

And so, the very first and most common reason is a blown fuse.

Each of the fog lights has its own fuse, namely F9 and F8 in the block, each of which is designed for a maximum current of 7.5 Amperes. In some cases, it happens that there are no fuses responsible for protecting the fog lights in the common block.

This happens when a car is purchased second-hand, and the PTFs were installed independently by its previous owner. In this case, you should inspect the entrance and the board on which the headlights themselves are located. Very often, during self-installation, the fuse is attached in this place.

    VAZ 2114 fuses

When replacing, you should use a fuse exclusively for a current of 7.5 A. A fuse designed for a higher current simply will not be able to protect the headlights from a voltage surge, and one designed for a lower one will often burn out.

If both fog lights do not light up at once, then the problem is most likely not in the fuse, since the failure of two protective elements at once is quite rare.

The next reason why the fog lights on the VAZ 2114 do not light up may be the usual burnout of the light bulbs. In order to check this, just unscrew the old lamps and screw in new ones in their place.

Another, no less common reason (especially in the middle climate) is the oxidation of the contact connectors of the headlights themselves. Very often this causes blinking or intermittent operation of the light bulbs. In order to eliminate this nuisance, it is enough to remove oxides by cleaning the headlight contacts with fine-grain sandpaper or wiping well with WD-40, White Spirit or kerosene.

    PTF VAZ 2114 with cartridge

Also, the contact running from the battery negative to the housing (to ground) often oxidizes. If this happens, the joint should be thoroughly cleaned, as described above.

    Oxidation of PTF contact

Another reason why the fog lights may not turn on is the failure of the button located on the front panel of the car, which is used to turn on the PTF. You can check its functionality in two ways: connect a new button (if you have one) and try to turn on the headlights, or ring the button with a multimeter. If the button turns out to be damaged, it should be replaced with a new one, since it is practically not repairable.

    PTF power button

Failure of the relay may also be the reason why the rear fog lights of the VAZ 2114 do not work. It is checked in the same way as a button - by testing the contact legs or replacing the relay with a new one. If it turns out that it has become unusable, it should also be replaced.

    PTF relay VAZ 2114

Often the cause of headlight failure can be the headlights themselves. During long-term use, the reflective layer can be destroyed, chipped and fall on electrical elements, thereby interfering with their proper operation. That is why it is worth periodically checking the internal condition of all headlights (not just PTF).

    Decoding old-style fuses, diagram, video

The block of the old-style carburetor “seven” includes 17 fuses fixed to the board using spring contacts and 6 electromagnetic relays.

The block has two printed circuit boards mounted parallel to each other and connected by jumpers. It is also connected to the car’s network through detachable connections made in different colors for proper docking. The photo below shows a diagram of the location of the VAZ 2107 power supply control elements.

Photo of old VAZ 2107 fuse box

The body is made of plastic; there is a cover on top with the location of the elements on the block and their purpose in the form of images. The table below shows the decoding and pinout with the assignment of fuses and relays.

    Table with transcript

Fuse and relay number (rated current*)Purpose of fuses and relays VAZ 2107
F1 (8A/10A)Responsible for the operation of the rear lights, or more precisely, for the light that turns on when the gearbox shifts into reverse. It is also responsible for the operation of the electric motor of the stove (heater), the rear window heating relay, also called the winding. In a VAZ 21057 car, this relay is responsible for the electric motor of the rear window washer.

Repair and maintenance of such an installation structure is very difficult and inconvenient. If a track on the board is shorted or broken, not everyone will be able to repair the device.

    Useful video

If all of the above reasons have been checked, and none of them have been identified, then the problem is in the wiring itself. In this case, you should ring all the wires used in the fog lamp connection circuit, and also check the correctness of the connection itself.

This can be done using the diagram given at the beginning. In this case, special attention should be paid to the correct connection (to the required connectors) of the button and relay.

    Checking and replacing the relay

A very important role in the proper operation of the system is played by relays, which periodically perform operations to turn on or off the necessary functions in the car.

An electromagnetic relay consists of a coil, which is supplied with power through a circuit and making contacts.

To check its functionality, you should perform a number of sequential operations:

    1. The ground wire in the car is disconnected from the battery.
    2. The relay can be easily pulled out by hand.
    3. A visual inspection of the contacts is carried out, they are cleaned of oxidation, and the reliability of the pin fastenings is checked.
    4. Functionality testing is performed by applying 12V power to the winding using two pieces of wire.
    5. When power is supplied, the coil should operate and the contacts should close, which can be checked using a multimeter in vertebrae or resistance measurement mode.
    6. If it does not work, the relay should be replaced with a new one.

The lamps in the PTF are burnt out

Most often, the cause of a non-working fog light on a VAZ 2114 is a burnt-out lamp. In this case, it is necessary to remove the lamp from the PTF housing and carry out a visual inspection. If at the same time you find a burnt-out lamp spiral, therefore, it is necessary to replace the lamp with a new one. There are also cases that upon visual inspection the lamp may not be burnt out. In any case, you need to insert and check another working lamp. Since in a situation with a fuse, two lamps cannot burn out at the same time, so if both VAZ 2114 fog lights do not work, the reason is different.

    PTF relay does not work

The VAZ 2114 PTF is turned on through a relay that is installed in the fuse box or in another place that was selected by the electrician when installing the foglights independently. You can check the serviceability of the VAZ 2114 fog lamp relay by turning on the PTF button. If you hear a click inside, then the relay is working; if not, replace it

PTF power button does not work

The fog light switch may also be the reason why the fog lights are not working. Replacing the VAZ 2114 PTF on and off button is quite easy.

    Power fuses

The power fuse and relay block is located on the strip under the panel (dashboard), at the feet of the front passenger; to access you need to bend the plastic side panel.

Depending on the car model, the appearance of the unit may differ slightly from that shown in the photo.

The lowest relay and fuse are the fuel pump. When the ignition is turned on, the fuel pump turns on for 5 seconds to create pressure in the system. Check the ground and contacts of this unit, and also inspect the wiring. The wire from the relay to the pump, which runs along the floor under the casing, may be broken.

The topmost relay is the radiator cooling fan. If it is OK, see the information about fuse F5.

    Mounting block connection diagram

Most serious electrical problems can be solved by replacing the fuse and relay mounting block. The price of such an assembled unit is about 1500-2000 rubles. Usually, due to oxidation of contacts, current surges, moisture ingress after washing, dust, dirt and other factors, printed circuit board tracks and contacts become green or black, and simply fail.

If your VAZ 2115 is several years old and nothing has been done to the block, then there is a very high probability of seeing all the problems described above when it is removed. Replacing the unit with a new one will avoid many future problems. The electrics will work as they should, most likely even better. There are often cases when, after replacement, devices that never worked before begin to work. Drivers get used to the car and do not know how it should be in fully working order.

Therefore, in case of serious problems, I advise you not to save money and change the unit. It would also be a good idea to replace the steering column switches - it will save a lot of nerves and time in the future, and it will just be a pleasure to drive a working car.

Another important point in case of electrical faults in the VAZ-2115 is the presence of good contact to the body. The block is grounded to the car body and uses it as a second wire. When the nut that secures the terminal of this contact is loosened, any strange behavior of the devices may begin. If interruptions and unstable operation of any components begin, check the reliability of this grounding to the housing.

Do you often have electrical problems? What ways can you suggest to solve such problems? Maybe there was some special case, write about it, it will be useful to other car enthusiasts.
