Why the low beam does not work on a Chevrolet Niva: the lamp does not light up

How is a relay different from a fuse?

Fuses are needed to break the circuit when the current increases above certain values. This is necessary in order to protect wires and electronic components from damage. A sharp increase in current is usually associated with a short circuit.

The Chevrolet Niva uses blade-type fuses.

Each of them corresponds to a certain current strength, which is critical for the circuit. When a short circuit occurs, the small jumper inside the fuse burns, thereby breaking the circuit.

That is why it is also called “fusible”. When replacing, you must always de-energize the circuit that it protects, and then install a new element.

The relay is an electronically controlled switch. Relays are often used to turn on elements remotely, so that there is no need to run a large number of cables to the instrument panel. Typically, a relay uses a lower current to operate than the circuit it controls. Some have a timer function, such as those used to control the windshield wiper or turn signal lamp. This allows you to set an impulse at certain intervals.

Most relays and fuses are located in the passenger compartment, in a special panel, on the driver's side. But specialized relays that control high-current wires are placed under the hood in the engine compartment.

Why doesn't the low beam work on a Niva Chevrolet?

In order to understand why the low beam headlights on a Chevrolet Niva stop working, you do not need to be a specialist or have any specific skills, you just need to carefully read our article, and all questions will disappear by themselves.

Causes of problems

Fan-avto All my life I have been surrounded by cars! First, in the village, already in the first grade, I was rushing around on a tractor through the fields, then there was JAVA, then a penny. Now I am a third-year student at the Polytechnic Faculty of Automotive Engineering. I work part-time as a car mechanic and help repair cars for all my friends.

    Undoubtedly, the first thing that needs to be checked is the condition of the light elements themselves. They must be free of black traces of soot, visible damage or other design flaws. If there are any, then the lamp must be replaced.

Thanks everyone for the advice! Both lamps burned out at once!

Both my lamps burned out at the same time. So does the clubber.

I had this happen myself. In the evening I got into the car and turned on the light, but it didn’t come on. I also couldn’t believe that two light bulbs could burn out at once, I searched all the fuses and relays. Well, the tank is always in the car, I checked the power supply. Now I always carry 2 light bulbs with me in reserve .

Damn it was like that on the short guy. I didn’t have time to figure it out, I sold it))) And I’ll keep an eye on the solution to the problem

just replacing lamps

I have this: the low beam goes out, the high beam can be turned on by the lever (push away from me) without turning on the light button. The lamps are intact, the fuses are intact, I changed the relay. I didn’t go into the block. I missed it because I don’t drive at night

Most likely lamps. The same thing happened to me a year ago - both lamps went out at once.

1. check the lamps 2. poke a voltmeter instead of the lamp - you will check the entire circuit. Further - depending on the situation.

Is it somehow difficult to plug in a working lamp? to exclude lamps. This is the first thing you need to do before getting into the relay and wiring.

first - lamps, second - the button there is nothing to ring there, check the lamps first, then close the button

Can it be simpler - does the relay click when you press the button?

When you press the button the relay clicks, I changed the relay just in case, no effect

It happened to me too, both bulbs burned out at once) I checked the relay and the pre-relay, rang the bulbs - they turned out to be the culprit.

Relay on low beam check the diagram. . You probably installed the fog lights yourself, so check the ground, the button, and the wiring.

It happens that both fuses burn out at the same time, and both lamps. It’s easier to check the fuses, the power to them, the power to the headlight harness connectors than to remove the headlights themselves. The same applies to fog lights.

The filament in the light bulb has burned out

The first thought that comes to mind if any light source does not turn on is that the light bulb has burned out. Car lamps are designed in such a way that the low beam filament can burn out while the high beam filament is working. That is, in halogen lamps there are two separate filaments, and the breakage of one of them has no effect on the performance of the second.

To replace a light bulb, it is not at all necessary to contact the services of an auto electrician. All you need to do is follow these steps:

  • open the car hood;
  • remove the protective cover on both sides of the headlight;
  • disable contact group;
  • remove the spring clips;
  • remove the burnt out light bulb;
  • insert new one;
  • Carry out all preparatory steps in reverse order.

At the same time, we should not forget to follow some rules:

  • It is recommended to wipe the surface of the flask with alcohol before installation, otherwise it may immediately burn due to the presence of greasy or dirty stains;
  • Do not touch the flask with unprotected hands, as this may lead to contamination of its surface. This is best done with cotton gloves, but you can also use a napkin or rag.

Fuse burned out

For this reason, one low beam headlight often does not light up. To eliminate it you need to do the following:

  • open the block that contains all the fuses of the automobile electrical circuits;
  • Using the diagram, the fuse that is needed is determined. As a rule, if it has burned out, it is immediately visible;
  • replace the faulty element with a working one.

By the way, if blown fuses become a frequent occurrence, then you should look for a breakdown in the wiring. To determine it, you need to ring all the elements of the electrical circuit, or seek help from specialists. Moreover, this must be done without fail, since the presence of a short circuit can cause a fire.

Having problems with the wires

The headlight does not light. To eliminate this malfunction, you will have to check all the blocks through which the relay and fuse box are connected. It is possible that there is a poor-quality connection, as well as oxidation of the contacts, which leads to an increase in the current flowing in these places and their heating. To eliminate such malfunctions, it is enough to tighten all the pad fastenings, having first thoroughly cleaned all contacts using sandpaper or a needle file.

It would also be useful to check the button with which the headlights are turned on, since its contacts are also subject to oxidation and they may also have a poor-quality connection. Practical experience suggests that it is from this button that you should start troubleshooting, and only after making sure that it is fully operational, continue searching for the reason why the low beam does not work.

Previously, the lamps “burned” alternately, I changed them myself without any problems. Today I once again changed both lamps, but there was no result. The connectors do not seem to have melted.

Other reasons why one low beam headlight does not light up

Sometimes the abnormal operation of headlights lies in very unusual reasons. Thus, there is a known case when the owner of a Niva turned off the low beam after he dismantled the headlight cleaners, which had long ceased to function. As a result, for a long time he could not understand why the low beam on both headlights turned off. Only through experimentation did he manage to discover that for the headlights to work normally, the presence of any motor, be it left or right, is necessary. Ultimately, it was necessary to create an imitation of the presence of these elements by closing the contacts going to them.

This example illustrates that if, after checking all electrical circuits and the functioning of all elements, the malfunction cannot be eliminated, you should remember whether any changes or improvements have been made to the design of the car in the foreseeable past. After all, it cannot be ruled out that in the process of making changes, some brilliant idea of an engineer at the car plant was violated, which provoked the disappearance of the light.

In cases where all of the above measures were taken, but it was not possible to achieve normal operation of the low beam lamp, you should contact specialists at a service station. Otherwise, further searching for the reason why one low beam headlight is not on may take a lot of time without achieving the desired result.

Finding out the reasons that caused the low beam to fail and gaining experience in eliminating them will also help if the opposite problem occurs - the high beam stops lighting while the low beam is working normally. As a rule, the causes of the malfunction in this case are the same as those described above, only they are also supplemented by inadequate operation of the steering column switch. By the way, it can also be the reason why one low beam headlight does not light up. And in this case, it is best to simply replace it.

Also an option. By the way, it is the 8-pin connector that is to blame, which I wrote to you about.

Added after 3 minutes 25 seconds:

Only then is it completely unclear why the high beam light is on from the steering column. After all, the steering column controls the same relay.

Amazing miracles. It started a long time ago - the high beam disappeared from the “high beam” position on the steering column. When you move the lever a little, the distant one appears and the lamp on the instrument panel lights up. then disappeared completely. the near one is there, the farthest one from the position towards you (we flash the far type) is there, on the lever it’s on - the far one is not there. The fuses are intact, I tried to change the switch - it turned out to be crap, I didn’t even turn on the close one (see above). I put the old one back. the neighbor appeared. The high-range flashing works; when flashing, the high-range lamp lights up - the lights are intact. relays click. I swapped the pads on the relays (I have 2121, the light relay is in the block on the left under the tidy under the trim, if anyone needs it) - zero effect. I don’t know where to dig further. if the blinking works, it means that the circuit farthest from the dimensions to the headlights is intact and the fuses of this circuit are intact. the relays click, which means power is coming to them. Look at the 8-pin connector under the dashboard.

Added after 41 minutes 19 seconds:

I’ll add - with the old switch there is an option to catch the position between the near and far, in which the distant is still there. turns out to be the steering column?

Which ones can be replaced with: choosing lamps for low beam

When choosing a replacement bulb for your low beam headlights, there are a few important details to consider.:

  1. Appearance. When choosing a new light bulb, you should pay attention to appearance. That is, you need to select the same element that was previously installed by the manufacturer. This way the new lamp will match the control parameters. Xenons and LEDs need a luminous flux regulator. If they are absent, you may encounter difficulties when passing a technical inspection.
  2. Design. There are several options for lamp design. Lamps are sold on the market as single-filament lamps, which are intended only for low beam H7, and double-filament lamps - H4 - for low and high beam. When choosing an element, it is necessary to take into account the features of the headlight.
  3. Power plays an important role when choosing a product for low beam. This indicator must correspond to the factory standard. In the worst case, the illumination of the route increases significantly. This will blind oncoming traffic, which could cause a serious accident. Therefore, when choosing a part, you must take this parameter into account.
  4. Base. When replacing the lamp yourself, it is advisable to have the old element with you in order to correctly select the new model according to the size of the seat.
  5. Manufacturer. Among the well-known brands are Bosch, Philips, Koito and others.
