The VAZ 2110 car is in serious demand among domestic buyers. This is a fairly reliable, moderately powerful product from the AvtoVAZ concern.

Causes of belt breakage

One of the common problems with the model is the failure of the timing belt. The reasons for this may be different:

  • Simple wear and tear caused by a long period of use of the vehicle;
  • Regular increased loads under which the engine has to work intensively;
  • Mechanical damage as a result of improper operation or received during the repair of other components;
  • Manufacturing defect.

Regardless of the causes of the problem, it must be eliminated.

Over time, it stretches so much that the gear teeth jump by 1-2 links. This disrupts the valve timing and causes interruptions in engine operation. But this is the best-case scenario for such a situation. The worst is when the strap breaks and the valves bend.

How to determine when it's time to change the timing belt

The most prudent thing to do would be to install a new spare part on your VAZ-2115 before the belt breaks. The following signs may indicate that urgent replacement is necessary:

  • hum and extraneous noise during operation of the power unit;
  • mileage on one belt is over 60 thousand kilometers;
  • oil getting into the timing belt.

In a situation with a belt, it is best to spend money on a new spare part and replace it several times than to pay later for a major engine overhaul. Manufacturers often assure that you can drive up to 100 thousand kilometers on one belt on a VAZ-2115; in fact, it is better to change it every 60 or a little earlier.

Check the belt tension regularly; if it sag or distributes the load unevenly, this component may soon need to be replaced. Remember that in this part of the timing belt there is no such thing as self-adjustment during operation. Uneven tension will inevitably lead to breakage. This part of the gas distribution mechanism must be replaced immediately after the first time it is tightened.

Be sure to monitor the battery and ignition system of your VAZ-2115, since starting the engine “from the pusher” has a detrimental effect on the condition of the timing belt. The fact is that with this type of launch, the shafts begin to move with a strong jerk, which stretches the belt and leads to a decrease in its service life.

Help in choosing a timing belt and rollers

The reliability, efficiency and operating life of the motor depend on the quality of the rollers and belts chosen for replacement.

Research shows that the cost of a belt is from 450 rubles, and rollers will cost you at least 600 rubles.

When buying spare parts, be guided by the opinions of VAZ 2110 car owners. There are many forums. Also consult with specialists at the service station. They will be able to give professional advice, or even order quality components for you.

Surveys among owners of AvtoVAZ’s creation, namely the VAZ 2110, showed that the most popular belts are products manufactured by the following companies:

  • Gates;
  • Bosch;
  • Kraft;
  • Power Grip;
  • Dayco;
  • Contitech.

As for videos, it’s better to pay attention to the following brands:

  • Gates;
  • Power Grip;
  • VPZ;
  • BRT;
  • Dayco;
  • Marel.

Of course, the choice is purely individual and depends on the financial capabilities and available assortment of a particular store. But if the necessary elements are not available in your city, you can always order them online. Nowadays this is not a problem.

What problems can arise with the timing system?

  • When changing the belt, you need to pay attention to how it is damaged. Based on the types of damage, it is not difficult to determine the types of malfunction.
  • The main reasons for replacement, and the possible consequences of untimely replacement:
  • Tearing, fraying, and damage almost always occur due to excessive belt tension.
  • One of the teeth is missing, indicating that the belt tension is too weak.
  • If one or more teeth are heavily worn, this indicates that the tensioning procedure was incorrect.
  • The appearance of cracks indicates a temperature difference above maximum levels.
  • The appearance of oil on the surface indicates its leakage. If detected, it is necessary to urgently replace the belt and find and eliminate the leak.
  • Significant wear of the belt ends means misalignment during installation, straight or parallel.

Manufacturer's recommendations

  1. Your primary task as a car owner is to periodically visually inspect the unit.
  2. In addition to replacing the element, it is necessary to simultaneously replace the tension rollers.
  3. VAZ 2110 comes with 8 and 16 valves. The replacement process also depends on this. So, in an 8-valve valve, one tension roller is installed, and in a 16-valve valve, a support and a tension roller are installed.

Replacing the timing belt of a dozen is not difficult. It is not necessary to contact specialists. It is quite possible to do it on your own.

Set of tools

To complete the job of replacing the timing belt you will need:

  • A set of spanners and open-end wrenches;
  • Mount;
  • Screwdriver Set;
  • A special key with which to tighten the roller or simple pliers with curved rings;
  • Car jack;
  • Rags, protective gloves.

Many people ignore the advice on using gloves. Especially in the summer when it's hot. But they are needed to protect you from injury.

There is no need for an inspection hole. You will need to remove the right wheel to remove the timing belt if your Ten is equipped with power steering. So you can't do without a jack.

The process of removing the old belt

To understand how to change the timing belt on a VAZ 2110, you need to study the instructions.

Stages of the soft product replacement process:

  1. The wire leading to ground is disconnected from the battery.
  2. The alternator belt is removed.
  3. The piston of number 1 cylinder rises. The front right wheel must be removed. Setting the VAZ 2110 8 valve timing marks is done by turning the crankshaft in the direction of movement clockwise. The marks of the camshaft gear are aligned with a special antenna located on the rear cover of the timing drive.
  4. The bolt on the generator drive pulley is unscrewed and removed. A prerequisite is to lock the crankshaft. This will require at least two people. One is engaged in keeping the crankshaft from possible rotation. The other one, from the clutch housing, removes the plug and unscrews the bolt securing the pulley, which is removed. Immediately there is a check of the coincidence of the marks on the flywheel and the slot in the crankcase.
  5. To loosen the nut securing the tension roller, take a size 17 wrench. With its help, the roller is slightly rotated in order to reduce the belt tension.
  6. The timing drive is being removed.

Checking the condition of the belt

First, remember that you need to check the condition of the belt once a year, or every 10-15 thousand kilometers. Replacement is carried out after every 50 thousand kilometers.

To examine the status of an item, follow these steps:

  • Remove the plug from the protective front timing cover;
  • Remove the alternator belt so that it does not interfere with you;
  • Unscrew the six bolts, which will allow you to remove the cover;
  • Access the belt and examine it.

Removing the timing belt cover
If you notice any of the following, be sure to proceed with replacing the belt:

  • The element has bulges or cuts;
  • Broken threads and traces of delamination appeared on it;
  • There are abrasions, cracks or folds;
  • Oil is leaking.

Why do you need a timing belt?

In all cars, the timing belt acts as a connecting element between the camshaft and the crankshaft. After all, as you know during operation, the crankshaft rotates due to the work of the piston group, and in order for the camshaft to open the valves at the top point, synchronization of their movement is necessary. The timing belt does this job. In other words, in the absence of such a link, the engine simply will not move. Therefore, it is very important to maintain it in excellent working condition and replace it on time.

How to choose a timing belt?

Which timing belt to choose? Which one has a longer service life? These and many other questions are asked by many VAZ-2112 owners when choosing a new timing belt. Of course, there is a large selection of belts in stores, and the seller will select one for you based on your parameters, focusing only on the manufacturer.

Among Russian manufacturers, VAZ-2112 owners, according to reviews from most forums, have a leading timing belt - OJSC BRT Balakovo . Further, with a large lag, car enthusiasts choose belts from Gates and Bosch . However, the latter is not stable, because its breakdown can occur either at the 5,000th mileage or at the 20th.

In addition, there are enhanced options from the above-mentioned manufacturers.

Belt replacement

Replacing the timing belt must be described separately, depending on how many valves your VAZ 2110 has - 8 or 16. Self-repair of the unit on an 8-valve engine is considered easier, although you should not have any serious problems with a 16-valve engine.

8 valve

The sequence of work will be as follows:

  1. Disconnect the battery by removing the negative cable;
  2. Unscrew the bolts from the belt protective cover;
  3. Remove this protective cover;
  4. Remove the front wheel on the passenger side, while simultaneously removing the mudguards and engine compartment protection;
  5. Turn the generator pulley clockwise so that the marks on the cover and the pulley match;
  6. Remove the protective plug from the gearbox and check in the resulting hole to see how much the control marks match;
  7. Using a metal screwdriver or other object, you need to block the flywheel;
  8. After this, you can unscrew and remove the generator pulley;
  9. Make a few turns to loosen the nut that holds your belt tensioner pulley in place;
  10. Remove the old belt. You won’t need it anymore, so feel free to send it to the landfill;
  11. The space needs to be cleaned and degreased. White spirit is perfect for this;
  12. After rinsing, dry everything using a dry and clean cloth;
  13. Install the new roller following the direction arrows. If they are missing, then take the inscription into account. It should be located from left to right, that is, you could read it without any problems;
  14. To tighten the belt, move the roller counterclockwise;
  15. Check that all marks and the degree of belt tension match correctly;
  16. The compression ratio should be checked on a cold engine and at an air temperature within 15-30 degrees Celsius;
  17. Turn on the motor and with the unit running, check whether you have installed everything correctly;
  18. If the sound is normal, then the installation was completed correctly;
  19. Reassemble the removed elements in reverse order.

The replacement can be considered complete.

16-valve

The VAZ 2110 is equipped with two types of engines - with 8 and 16 valves. At the same time, replacing a 16-valve valve is considered more difficult. Experienced craftsmen assure that for a high-quality timing belt change it is enough to put in a little more effort and attention.

Therefore, in this case, the work must be done as follows.

  1. Remove the six nuts that hold the protective cover in place. Remove the protection cover.
  2. Release the crankshaft sensor.
  3. Find an area on the pulley that is missing a tooth. It will act as a guide to find top dead center.
  4. Install the piston from the first cylinder so that it is at top dead center.
  5. Align the pulley and crankshaft sensor, lock the pulley, unscrew and remove it.
  6. Next, loosen the nut located on the tensioner pulley.
  7. Remove the old belt and also remove the tensioner pulley.
  8. Clean the freed space from dirt, oil, and clean it with a dry cloth.
  9. Install a new belt and secure the pulley with bolts. It is recommended to replace the roller itself at the same time.
  10. Make sure that the belt and drive marks match, as well as the timing gear marks.
  11. Tension the belt using the tensioner roller.
  12. Check the elasticity after stretching.
  13. Make two full revolutions of the crankshaft to check the quality of the assembly.
  14. Make sure that the marks match, after which the pulley can be installed in place.
  15. Turn on the engine, check for correct installation, and then reinstall the protection casing.

List of damage to the timing belt on the VAZ 2110

Replacing the timing belt of a VAZ 2110 8-valve injector with your own hands is carried out:

  1. As a result of increased tension, the surface begins to become shaggy. Gaps appear.
  2. If the product was loosely tensioned, this leads to cutting off the tooth. In such a situation, replacing the 8-valve timing belt on a VAZ 2110 is required immediately.
  3. The teeth are largely worn. This is also a consequence of poor tension adjustment.
  4. The surface of the product is covered with small cracks. This happens due to prolonged overheating or hypothermia.
  5. Sometimes the wear area is between the teeth. This is also the result of poor belt tension.
  6. If oil constantly leaks from the engine and gets on the belt, then the product is removed. Then you need to find and fix the leak. The timing belt is replaced with a new one.
  7. On a VAZ 2110 with 8 valves, the timing belt is changed if there was a misalignment during its installation. Its end wear is observed.

When driving the car, you must constantly listen to noises. When it is clearly audible in the engine area, it means you need to stop and tighten the belt.

Replacement instructions

For the procedure, you should use an overpass or inspection hole. To raise the car, you can use a jack, lifting the front end and placing it on supports. Replacement is carried out only on a cold machine.

Required Tools

Replacing a timing belt and chain is a complex and lengthy procedure. To complete it as quickly as possible, you need to properly prepare for it and prepare in advance:

  • a set of keys;
  • set of heads;
  • knob;
  • screwdriver

To make consumables last longer, you should buy originals.

Stages

  1. First, turn off the power to the car by removing the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. If protection is installed, it must be removed.
  3. Then you need to drain the coolant from the system.
  4. At the next stage, you need to dismantle the radiator, cooling system fan, and pump pulley.
  5. Then you need to remove the drive belts for the power steering, air conditioning compressor, and generator.
  6. Next, unscrew the spark plugs.
  7. Then we remove the distributor protection screen and disconnect the tube connecting it to the timing belt from the air collector sleeve.
  8. By turning the crankshaft by the bolt securing its pulley, you should set the marks. The mark on the timing belt pulley must coincide with the casting on the camshaft; accordingly, the installation mark on the crankshaft gear must align with the mark on the oil pump housing. In the video you can see how to set the tags correctly.
  9. Using a special tool, you need to unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Then you need to remove the lower and middle timing protection covers.
  11. By unscrewing the tensioner mounting bolt and turning it counterclockwise, we loosen the tension on the timing belt and remove the latter.
  12. Now you should change the roller and start tensioning the timing belt of the VAZ 2105. Changing the tension roller
    Before doing this, all parts should be cleaned of dirt.
  13. The belt should first be pulled onto the crankshaft pulley, then onto the oil pump drive pulley, and lastly onto the camshaft pulley.Tightening the belt onto the camshaft pulley
  14. Having put the belt on the tensioner, you need to tighten the bracket and install the spring.

When installing the timing belt, do not rotate the camshaft and crankshaft so as not to knock off the marks.

  1. After turning the crankshaft two turns, you need to check that all installation marks match, tension the belt and tighten the tensioner bracket mounting bolts.
  2. Next, assembly is carried out in reverse order.

After the procedure for changing the timing belt or chain of the VAZ 2105, you should start the car and check the performance of the engine.

Checking belt tension with fingers or scales

Checking the timing belt tension is usually done with your fingers, without special measuring devices. To do this, on the longest section of the belt, twist the belt with two fingers. A properly tensioned belt should barely turn 90 degrees. If the belt can be easily turned 1.5 turns, then it needs to be tightened. And, conversely, if you can’t turn it 90 degrees with two fingers, then the tension has been exceeded.

The optimal distance that you can move the timing belt with your fingers in the middle of a long section of the belt is 1 cm.

If you don’t trust the manual method of checking belt tension, then you can use conventional measuring instruments: calipers and spring scales.

We hook the scales in the middle of the belt between the pulleys and pull the scales to a value of 10 kilograms. Then, using a caliper or a regular ruler, measure the distance by how much the belt was pulled back under such a load. The permissible distance for optimal tension is considered to be 5.5 mm (+ - tenths of millimeters if using a caliper).
