Before tuning a VAZ 21099 injection car, you will need to find out how this system works. Outgoing exhaust gases contribute to reduced power. This flow must be suppressed. Reducing its volume in order to quickly remove exhaust allows the chamber to be filled with air masses and fuel in the shortest possible time.

It is necessary to take into account that the more combustible mixture gets into the cylinder, the higher the power will be obtained. This reduces air resistance at any point of the muffler and other elements of the system in question. This improves engine response and reduces fuel consumption. Note that the exhaust system comes in the following types.

  1. Reverse flow, which increases gas resistance. They, passing through the bends of the system, lose speed, creating vortex flows and forming significant resistance.
  2. Direct flow, which is presented in the form of a straight pipe with wide perforation between the outlet and the inlet.

The direct-flow exhaust system is mainly subjected to auto tuning. In this case, it is necessary to replace its elements with other devices that have bends.

VAZ-2109 owners are often interested in how the exhaust system of their car works. Curiosity in this case is far from idle. Some want to do repairs and want to know what and how it works here. Others thought about such an option as tuning, that is, modification, for example, installing a Stinger exhaust system. In any case, if you want to do this work yourself, you first need to familiarize yourself with the design features. Well, don’t forget about the main purpose of this system – to remove exhaust gases to the outside and reduce noise. Accordingly, incorrect intervention can lead to unpleasant consequences.

Shoots in the exhaust pipe, what should I do?

Often, the owners of the "nine" do not know why the exhaust pipe is firing. This is due to an unregulated cold running system. If there is an excess of the appropriate mixture, the engine starts with shots in the muffler. An increase in the level of the working mixture is associated with a faulty supply valve.

When the main jet becomes clogged, the fuel mixture becomes lean. The engine starts with a popping sound. If the car is put into driving mode, then the vehicle will not be able to gain the required speed for subsequent movement. The jet becomes clogged for the following reasons:

  • air suction;
  • the adjustment of the idle fuel quality screw is broken;
  • suction of air masses.

In this case, the VAZ engine overheats and fuel consumption increases. The water in the radiator begins to boil. In such a situation, for carburetor 21099, shots appear in the carburetor.

If the economizer valve is turned on first, the fuel system will become richer prematurely. The speed of the car will be negligible. The engine, working under heavy load, contributes to the appearance of shots in the exhaust pipe.

The design of the exhaust system of a VAZ-2109 car

It’s worth noting right away that there is nothing particularly complicated here. In fact, the exhaust system of the “nine” is very simple, without any electronic gadgets, and it can be called classic. Accordingly, if you decide to do repairs or tuning, then no unexpected problems are expected here. The exhaust system of the “nine” consists of:

  • intake pipe;
  • catalyst;
  • additional and main mufflers;
  • exhaust manifold.

Speaking about the components listed above, it is worth explaining their purpose. In particular, a lambda probe is located inside the exhaust pipe of cars with an injection engine. It analyzes the composition of the exhaust gases and at the same time the mixture going into the cylinder block. The pipe itself is connected with four studs to an exhaust manifold made of cast iron.

Thanks to the installed catalyst, the harmfulness of the exhaust emitted into the atmosphere is reduced to a minimum. And finally, mufflers. An additional one (also called a resonator) is attached to the catalyst using a special unit. It should be noted that this scheme is used on cars with injection engines. On carburetor “nines”, an additional muffler is connected to the main pipe. The only exceptions here are models sent for export. A catalyst was also installed on them. The task of the resonator is to take on the main noise. Accordingly, the output sound will no longer be as strong. And finally, the main muffler. This is what you can see by looking under the rear bumper of your car.

Increased consumption

If the bypass valve or the piston of the corresponding pump freezes, then the fuel mixture is supplied in insufficient quantities. In this case, the motor operates under load. In such a situation, 21099 does not develop high speed. Often, car owners can observe the engine stopping spontaneously. This situation is characterized by high gasoline consumption.

If water appears in the sump of the pump or tank, then the engine does not start well when cold. It starts better when warmed up. Debris in the fuel lines and sump can cause the engine to fail to start.

This phenomenon is often associated with poor purging of the fuel pipeline, which goes from the corresponding tank to the pump. You can eliminate this problem by warming up the frozen water with a heating pad. The liquid is then drained. If the diaphragm breaks, then the Nine engine will not start. This is due to the fact that the fuel mixture quickly increases the oil level in the crankcase.

Manual pumping can lead to a weak supply of gasoline or its complete absence. If the throttle valve is not fully opened, the car is not able to develop significant speed. In this situation, there is a significant consumption of fuel fluid. If the air damper is partially open, then the fuel structure is disrupted.

Nuances of operation

There are some points that need to be taken into account when operating the VAZ 2110 system:

  • Under no circumstances should the vehicle be refueled with leaded fuel, as this will cause damage. It is very sensitive to lead compounds;
  • When operating a VAZ 2110 car, you also need to monitor the proper, precise operation of the ignition, since its poor-quality operation leads to the neutralizing part being removed from its working condition. Fuel that does not burn when a spark passes during ignition enters the converter and burns out there. For this reason, the ceramic coating of the component quickly deteriorates;
  • Frequent malfunctions will sooner or later lead to complete or partial blockage of the output system, in turn to the failure of the engine and its repair or replacement will be required.

Auto VAZ 2109-08 removal and installation of exhaust pipe, muffler, resonator

The procedure for removing and installing the exhaust system of VAZ 2108 - 21099 is:

  1. Put the car on the parking brake and place chocks under the rear wheels of the car. Place the front part on supports.
  2. Unscrew the 2nd nuts (fastening the exhaust pipe to the bracket under the bottom of the car). Next, unscrew the two screws securing the bracket to the body and remove it.
  3. Bend the ends of the locking plates of the nuts securing the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  4. Unscrew the 4 nuts securing the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold of the exhaust system.
  5. Unscrew the 2nd nuts and remove the clamp.
  6. Disconnect the muffler and resonator pipe, do not forget to remove the O-ring. Remove the exhaust pipe from the muffler.
  7. Installation of the exhaust muffler pipe is carried out in the reverse order of removal. During installation, you need to replace the nuts securing the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and replace the exhaust pipe gasket. Tighten the nuts securing the elbow to the exhaust manifold to a torque of 22–23 N·m (2.1–2.4 kgf·m).

The exhaust gas exhaust system of the injection engine of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars consists of several parts: an exhaust manifold on the engine, a muffler exhaust pipe, an exhaust gas catalytic converter (ECM for EURO-2 standards), an additional muffler, and a main muffler. Some vehicles equipped with a CO potentiometer may not have a catalytic converter.

The exhaust manifold is made of cast iron and is attached to the engine block head on six studs, through a gasket consisting of two symmetrical parts. The exhaust manifold flange is connected to the exhaust pipe flange with four studs and nuts. A heat-resistant metal-asbestos gasket is installed between the flanges.

The receiving pipe has a flange with two holes, two pipes and a gas receiver. An ECM oxygen sensor is installed on the exhaust pipe gas receiver. The mounting of the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter is hinged to reduce the transmission of vibrations to the body. The mobility and tightness of the connection is ensured by two springs installed under the coupling bolts instead of washers and a metal-graphite sealing ring with a spherical outer surface.

The catalytic converter has a flange with a concave spherical surface on the side of the connection with the exhaust pipe, and a flange with a convex spherical surface on the side of the additional muffler. A thermal protective metal screen is installed above the neutralizer. The connection between the neutralizer and the additional muffler is fixed.

An additional muffler (resonator) consists of a housing with a perforated pipe and partitions inside. The pipes of the additional muffler also have a flange on the neutralizer side, and a flared edge on the main muffler side. The outside of the optional muffler can be treated with aluminum to improve corrosion resistance.

The main muffler also consists of a housing with perforated pipes and partitions inside. The housing can be made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion. Two pipes are attached to the muffler body: on one side, flared, for connection with an additional muffler, on the other side, straight, for exhaust gases. The connection to the additional muffler is made through a metal ring and a two-piece clamp.

Both mufflers do not have welding points and are assembled by rolling parts to prevent corrosion.

Notes and additions

— On VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars without a catalytic converter, the exhaust pipe had a socket instead of a flange for connection with an additional muffler, the pipe of which also had a socket (flared edge). The connection was made through a metal ring and a two-piece clamp.

When repairing a muffler, inspect the rubber pads of the muffler suspension and resonator. If they are cracked, torn or have lost their elasticity, the pads must be changed. Robot execution order:

  1. Remove the clamp by unscrewing the two nuts.
  2. Disconnect the resonator pipe and the exhaust muffler pipe, while removing the O-ring.
  3. Tighten the clamp bolts and remove the clamp. Disconnect the resonator pipe from the muffler pipe, while removing the O-ring.
  4. Lift the resonator, remove the 2 suspension pads from its mounts and dismantle the resonator.
  5. The resonator is installed in the reverse order of removal.

How to replace the rear part of the muffler, also known as the main muffler, on VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099 cars?

Removal: 1) First, remove the O-ring and the clamp that holds the resonator together and the rear part of the muffler by unscrewing the two nuts securing the clamp. (You will find how to remove the fastening clamp in the article: “Replacing the resonator”, paragraph “1-2”)

2) Then remove the three suspension cushions from the muffler, to do this:

First, using a screwdriver, remove the front suspension cushion from the bracket of the rear part of the muffler.

Next, without removing the screwdrivers from your hands, disconnect the rear suspension cushion from the bracket in the same way.

And to complete the operation, disconnect the side airbag from the left side of the rear muffler.

Note! Replace all torn pillows, as well as hanging pillows that have lost their elasticity, with new ones!

3) After removing the airbags, remove the rear part of the muffler from the vehicle.

Installation: 1) First install the new rear muffler onto the front suspension mount.

2) Then onto the side hanging pillow.

3) And at the end of the operation, install the muffler on the rear suspension cushion.

4) After completing the suspension of the muffler, connect the rear part of the muffler to the resonator by inserting an O-ring between them, and installing a fastening clamp on top of the ring. (For more details, see the article: “Replacing the resonator”, paragraph “2-3”)

The muffler from the VAZ 21099 is replaced if there is a loud roar. In this case, you will have to replace the failed corrugation or the entire main part.
