The liftback definitely looks better than its sedan counterpart. 2. Salon Again, subjective - parity. Both machines have good ergonomics, all controls are at hand, you don’t have to reach anywhere. On the Grant, the seat cushion seemed a little longer to me, although this may be due to the fact that I have covers on the Kalina, which just eat up the length of the cushion that is missing in the Kalina. Also, the Granta's seats seem a little stiffer than the Kalina's without my covers. The only negative is the lack of adjustment of the headrest angle of the Granta. Multimedia. Our grant is not luxury, but norm+, i.e. push-button multimedia. Personally, it seems to me that this option is better for Grants, because... the touch MMS will not be in the field of view of the eye and you will have to be distracted on the go by switching stations, music or folders. On Kalina I very rarely use the touch screen; basically everything is controlled by buttons. The sound is not bad after playing with the equalizer. The presence of Isofix was quite critical for us now. In Kalina they were announced, but in fact they are not (as far as I know, they were in the Standard trim levels, but not in others, but three years ago this was not very important for me), the Grant has everything. I like the controls for temperature and air flow direction better on Kalina. 3. Trunk Here I’ll make do with numbers. Kalina 335 liters Grant 440 liters. Both figures do not include folded seats. Kalina has a slightly wider loading surface, making it more convenient for loading large items. 4. The body of the grant seemed thicker to me. On Kalina, when you press your fingers on the door, the iron dents, but on Granta it doesn’t. I really like how all the doors on the Grant close, including the door closers, and the trunk lid. On Kalina, the front doors open and close just as well, the rear doors are a little worse. The trunk has to be “slammed” a little. On a grant, it is enough to close the trunk lid just below the “middle” and then it will close itself, quietly and calmly. 5. Noise insulation On the Kalina I made noise on the doors, on the Grant I will do the same, although the car is quiet. The gearbox does not howl; on Kalina the howl is present in 2nd and 3rd gears. 6. Suspension The Kalina currently has a mileage of 63,000 km. On TO-30000, the lower arms were changed under warranty. Now the suspension has become noisier than on a new car, but it is in good condition and does not require attention at the moment. Granta is now driving quietly, the suspension does not make any sounds. Let's see what happens to it after 63,000 km!))) 7. Basic tires Kalina - Kama 217, Granta - Kama Euro 224. I didn’t change the standard tires on Kalina because it performs well off-road. Kama 217 is not a bad tire at all, just a bit noisy. The 224 is quieter, and I would even say quiet tires, but it’s hard to say how it will behave off-road.))) Why am I talking about off-road? There are several reasons - 1. we love to go to nature, and there are not always roads there. 2. My wife and I have a plot of land, we don’t have roads there yet, not all SUVs drive there. on Kalina, and I think this is a big merit of the rubber, I have never gotten stuck there yet.

As a result, I can say that both cars are good and comfortable. Kalina has proven itself to be a reliable device and has not caused any problems. There were minor problems that were fixed under warranty and without questions asked. On the Grant we will try to prevent these problems (thresholds, door frames) before they appear and it will also prove to be a reliable car.

We will definitely install a rear bumper trim on the Granta, door deflectors, and make noise for the doors and trunk.

And finally, let's move on to the main thing - the Lada Kalina engine. The manufacturer offers a car with two types of power units - 8 and 16 valves.

The first engine has a power of 87 horsepower. It is practically no different from the previous version installed on the VAZ 11183, only it has a smaller mass of the connecting rod and piston group due to a special alloy. The developers have reduced it by 39%, while if the timing belt breaks, the valve can still “bend”. Such motors are installed on Kalina in the “standard” and “norm” configurations.

The 16-valve engine has the same volume as the 8-valve engine - 1.6 liters, but more power, which is 98 hp. Only the luxury Kalina 2 is equipped with this engine. The same power unit is also installed on the Granta, so there is no need to talk about choosing between the Kalina Cross or the Granta Liftback in this regard.

And the second reported that before all the journalists and buyers, the serial Kalina Cross was received by the hockey players of the Togliatti Lada team, which traditionally “plays along” with the VAZ team in promoting the brand. AvtoVAZ, of course, takes an example from its older comrades: the T-shirts of the Manchester United club players have the Chevrolet emblem, Juventus of Turin helps the Agnelli family promote the Jeep brand, Volkswagen sponsors the Wolfsburg football team. We thought that the Lada hockey players - especially in the midst of the Kontinental Hockey League championship - were unlikely to immediately snatch up the keys, so we called the administration of the Togliatti team, and... When Konstantin Sorokin was just getting ready for his Kazakh “Cross Business Trip” (AR No. 19, 2014), the “hockey” Kalina Cross was already rushing from Tolyatti to the Dmitrov Automotive Test Site, where her rivals in our comparative test were waiting for her. This is another new VAZ product - the Lada Granta in a liftback body, the Lada Kalina and the new Renault Sandero hatchback. 3:1 in favor of Lada?

Just a year ago we conducted a comparative test with the new Kalina (AR No. 22, 2013), and now it has a new suspension and improved sound insulation. Kalina is now in its prime. In her eleventh year of life on the assembly line, she looks more attractive than ever. Especially in the Lux package. Beautiful 15-inch wheels, two airbags, air conditioning, power accessories, and a multimedia system with a touch screen. Luxury and under the hood: a 106-horsepower 1.6 engine with index 21927, this is the most powerful serial VAZ engine! The gearbox is cable driven. And for everything about everything - 420 thousand rubles.

The gaps between the body panels are wide but even, the fenders do not bulge, the doors do not bulge, but they move a little stiffly. True, our Kalina was assembled at the beginning of the year, and it still has the old opening angle limiters, while the other two Ladas already have new Czech parts - the gates swing wider and move smoother. Only 1500 rubles for a set of limiters! So I recommend it.

The hallmarks of the Luxury version in the cabin are velor seat upholstery and glossy plastic inserts on the high front panel. The chairs themselves are too soft and distribute the load badly. But now Kalinas are equipped with seats with the same cast frame, but with denser padding, so the back doesn’t go numb after half an hour. We tried such chairs, and on the example of six different cars. There is still no lateral support for the back, but the lower back does not collapse, and the pillow holds its shape. The problem is that all six seats differed at least slightly in terms of rigidity. So be sure to sit in your future car: you need to choose a Lada not only with your heart, but also. Yes, yes, the main point of support for the motorist.

And this point also opposes the new seats of the Kalina Cross station wagon. Here they are hard to the point of discomfort, and the side support bolsters are placed on the cushion so narrowly that I am afraid that anyone who wears trousers larger than size 50 will have to disassemble the chair and remove some of the padding.

I squeeze into this “conductor” and ask the question: what else are they asking for an extra 20 thousand rubles compared to the regular Kalina station wagon?

In addition to the sedan and liftback, the modernized family included the previous Kalinas (hatchback, station wagon and cross-station wagon), that is, the Lada Kalina brand ceased to exist.

VAZ employees admit that there was actually no question of which of the two names to keep in service: Granta sells much better than Kalina, and market research has shown that buyers have a more neutral attitude towards the Granta brand. Therefore, from now on, the Lada Granta has four body types to choose from with a single front end design.

We spent a lot of time working on the rear end, and the rear side door on this car is now original. What did we do with this door? First, we lowered the door frame at the rear by about 10-12 mm. And they raised the window sill line by about 15 mm. The car received a swift silhouette and a slightly lowered rear end - in order to give the appearance of a coupe, the appearance of a more sporty car. The roof of the liftback is new: in the head area of ​​the rear passengers, we slightly reduced the length of the roof by about 8 mm relative to the sedan. Plus they made a large, one might say huge, rear hinged door. I would like to note that this tailgate was designed to ensure minimal contamination during operation. And in the “standard” configuration we do not have a brush, but the level of pollution without a brush is no worse than on a sedan. We carried out a lot of tests, both laboratory and on the road, including driving behind a truck, overtaking a truck, etc. - the rear window remained clean. Therefore, in the minimum version, where we fought for the minimum price, trying to meet 314 thousand, the windshield wiper blade was removed from the package.

The second configuration is already the “norm”, 348 thousand, it has a different suspension - 3.1 rack, power steering, minimal power accessories, and it already has a rear window wiper. The liftback grants will have about five basic configurations in total. “Standard” - in one configuration, “norm” will be in two trim levels (without air conditioning and with air conditioning) and luxury – also in two, which differ in the gearbox - automatic and manual.

— When will there be an automatic transmission?

- Almost immediately. The fact is that we have already assembled all the trial batches - both automatic and manual, and now we will gradually introduce them. Over the next two months, we will master all the configurations.

— So it won’t be like with the “grant”, when sales started with the luxury version?

— With the “grant” we started correctly, with the “norm”. But with “Kalina”. We did well to start with expensive versions of the Largus, and we decided to start with the expensive ones for the Kalina too, but at that time the market was a little scared off. Therefore, with the “liftback” grants, we adjusted our strategy for entering the market: first there will be “norm”, then “luxury”, and then “standard”.

Kalina was launched into production back in 2004. This car was the first and only of all domestic B class developments. The characteristics of the sedan are almost the same as those of cars from European manufacturers. Kalina was produced in a 4-door version. The trunk volume was 380 liters, the vehicle weight was 1,070 kg. The car is equipped with a gasoline engine with a capacity of 81 hp. With.

The exterior and interior of both models are decent and quite beautiful. Here, too, much depends on the taste of a particular buyer. However, it is worth understanding that both models are real market individuals. Granta is almost the only such a well-thought-out liftback among Russian cars, and Kalina-Cross is a real “mini-all-terrain vehicle”, emphasizing its off-road character with an aggressive appearance. Of course, in terms of interior assembly, both cars are not particularly respectable; after all, they are AvtoVAZ. Externally, everything looks neat, beautiful and thoughtful.

The cost of both Grants and Kalinas can have different values, much depends on the selected configuration. The liftback is sold from a price of 370,000 rubles to 500,000 rubles in most regions of our country. Cross Kalina can be bought within the range of 460,000-550,000 rubles.

In general, it is up to the buyer himself to decide whether to take a Lada Granta liftback or a Kalina-Cross. He needs to analyze the situation himself and understand what he wants from his future car. If a motorist prefers to “plow” off-road terrain and make rare forays into the city, then you simply won’t find a better cross-country Kalina.
