In August 2012, sales of the Lada Grant with automatic transmission began; it was the first AVTOVAZ car to have an automatic transmission installed as standard on the assembly line. Almost three years later (in March 2015), sales of the Lada Grant with AMT (automated manual transmission) began. Let's talk about the differences between these two transmissions, which can also be installed on Lada Kalina, Priora, Vesta and XRAY. What are their pros and cons, and which car is better to choose?

Lada Granta with a gun: features

Let's start with the fact that the automatic transmission on the Grant is Japanese, manufactured by Jatco, with whom the plant has a contract for 3 years. The automatic transmission is relatively simple and reliable, a 4-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter, which was specially adapted for the car.

The rejection of other types of transmission was, first of all, dictated by the fact that the unit fits well in size and also does not require major changes to the design of the Grant.

As a result, the Lada Granta with an automatic transmission received not only a large number of calibrations, but also more than three dozen improvements in the form of new components. For example, taking into account the fact that the automatic transmission and gas turbine engine made the car heavier, springs of increased rigidity were integrated into the design of the front suspension, a cast crankcase was installed on the engine rather than a stamped one, etc.

Also, a new cooling radiator with increased performance was installed on the car, where the oil cooler is now located. It is worth noting that the ground clearance of Granta with automatic transmission is 20 mm. less than a sedan with a manual transmission, that is, 140 mm. However, there is no standard crankcase protection.

However, experts emphasize that adaptation, calibration and sea trials were carried out entirely on the territory of the Russian Federation, so to speak, in real “combat” conditions, which made it possible to fully prepare the vehicle for operating conditions.

  • Now about the automatic transmission itself. Automatic transmissions are produced at Jatco factories in Japan, that is, at VAZ they are simply connected to the engine during the assembly process of the car. The automatic transmission selector fits well into the usual budget salon. The lever handle is large, navigation through the modes is quite clear and easy to read. The selected mode is additionally duplicated on the monochrome BC screen on the instrument panel.

Moreover, the box received a special protection system against accidental or erroneous activation. Simply put, each of the available box modes will be turned on only when the conditions correspond to its inclusion.

In simple words, the driver can still move forward in D mode, while the selector can now be moved to R mode. Reverse gear will not engage immediately, that is, engagement will only occur when the electronics determines that it is safe for the automatic transmission.

In practice, the system works fine, but it is not entirely clear why the manufacturer abandoned the more usual mechanical blocking of unscheduled activations using the brake pedal.

In any case, protecting the automatic transmission will not hurt, and the pros and cons of this system will appear later, that is, during actual operation. Jatco emphasizes that such an automatic transmission is found on the Nissan Note and other Nissan models for the Chinese market, and breakdown statistics demonstrate the high reliability of the unit.

As for VAZ's policy, the warranty period for the gearbox is the same as for the entire car, and automatic transmission malfunctions, if they occur, will be resolved by completely replacing the unit, and not by repairing it.

Driving a Lada Granta with automatic transmission

If you don’t go into a detailed study of technical characteristics and indicators, the box cannot be called too thoughtful, but you shouldn’t expect sporty dynamics from a Granta with an automatic transmission either.

At the same time, for the majority of residents of large cities, the settings of the Grant machine in combination with an internal combustion engine will be optimal. In rough city driving with active acceleration, a 1.6 liter 16-valve engine will often be quite sufficient. If you save fuel and drive extremely calmly, you can easily use 9 liters of 95 gasoline, which is a good indicator for an automatic transmission.

Real consumption of Lada Granta with automatic transmission

The manufacturer produces the Lada Granta in several trim levels. Depending on this, gasoline consumption also changes. It is the largest in a car with an automatic transmission. According to the passport, the consumption should be 7.4 liters per 100 km. By citing these figures, AvtoVAZ is referring to the mixed cycle. In addition, they were obtained under testing conditions, which differ significantly from real ones.

In reality, fuel consumption will be completely different. This is due not only to the factors given above, but also to the operating features of the automatic transmission. Many mechanic owners use a simple trick to save gas. Accelerate the car before a long descent and switch to neutral. In the case of an automatic machine, everything is different. Here you can’t go down the hill this way anymore.

Or rather, this can be done, but how feasible is it from the point of view of the resource of the box? In addition, in the Lada Grant automatic, the consumption increases greatly when you sharply press the gas pedal. So, with a change in the car’s transmission, you will have to change your driving style. After summarizing all drivers’ complaints about increased consumption and analyzing their driving style, it became possible to divide them into the following categories:

  • Gasoline consumption is about 7 liters per 100 km. There are about 10% of them. These car enthusiasts live mainly in small towns, rarely get stuck in traffic jams, and drive mostly on the highway. In addition, they do not exceed the speed, do not turn on unnecessary consumers and do not use kickdown. Let's explain the last one. The fact is that Lada Granta with automatic transmission has a sharp acceleration function. It is simply necessary when overtaking if you have to do this after driving at low speed. It's called kickdown;
  • the next category is those whose car consumption is 9 liters per 100 km. There are already more of them, about 25%. They also never make sudden overtaking moves and do not use air conditioning. But they drive with a fairly noticeable load and periodically get into small traffic jams;
  • 40% of motorists consume 10-12 liters of gasoline per 100 km. They usually live in large cities and spend quite a lot of time in traffic jams. Use air conditioning periodically. Some people like to drive and get to work in the company of friends or relatives;

  • and the last category are residents of large cities. Traffic jams here last for many hours, long distances have to be covered, and if you stand in them for a long time, in hot weather, the use of air conditioning is inevitable. Hence the consumption - 15 liters. The number of such motorists of the total number is 25%. It should be noted right away that this figure should hardly be considered objective. The fact is that the Lada Granta automatic is bought mostly by residents of large cities. It is much more comfortable to ride here.

What's the result?

So, with automatic transmission, the Lada Granta comes in the “Norma +” configuration. It turns out that along with the automatic transmission, air conditioning, ABS and an additional airbag are also provided.

It is not surprising that the model in this case turns out to be more expensive, but in terms of availability, the domestic Lada Granta car with automatic transmission remains a profitable solution compared to its competitors.

As a summary, we note that if you need an affordable car with an automatic transmission, with relatively low fuel consumption and good driving characteristics, then the Lada Granta automatic definitely deserves attention.

Modern equipment of domestic cars allows anyone to become the owner of high-quality and comfortable transport. Many buyers pay special attention to the installed power systems and transmissions.

Particularly interesting to current drivers are the characteristics of an automated transmission, its pros and cons. The easiest way to get acquainted with the box “from the inside” is the opinion of the owners themselves. The owner reviews with a full description of its characteristics will help you understand the nuances of the Lada Granta automatic.

What gearboxes did it come with?

The Lada Granta passenger car has been in mass production since March 2011; this model replaced the popular Samara series.

Initially, the car was equipped only with a VAZ-2180 five-speed manual transmission; later, automatic and robotic gearboxes were installed on the car.

The cable manual gearbox Lada Granta with index 2181 has been produced since October 2012; it was later modernized, since car owners had many quality complaints about it.

Each type of transmission installed on a Togliatti-made car has its own characteristic differences and weaknesses, the so-called “diseases”.

List of manual transmission errors

Manual transmission Lada Granta

The manual transmission installed on the Granta has a long history; in fact, it is the same 5-speed. gearbox, like the VAZ-2108, but repeatedly subject to serious modernization.

From the beginning of Granta's production, the car was equipped with a model 2180 gearbox, with a shift rod, with the gear selection mechanism located at the bottom (inside the body), the same transmission was installed on the first generation Lada Kalina.

A modernized gearbox with index 2181 appeared in 2012, and in the new transmission:

  • The gear shift rod was replaced with two cables;
  • the speed selection mechanism was moved upward, it began to be located outside the housing, not in oil, as it was before;
  • in 1st-2nd gear a multi-cone synchronizer appeared;
  • The clutch housing has been changed; only 2.2 liters of transmission oil are now poured into the box itself, and not 3.3 liters as before.

The use of cables instead of a rod reduced the level of vibration in the body, and in general, speeds began to be switched more clearly, without “searching” for the desired gear.

But this transmission had one characteristic problem - the 2181 gearbox of the first editions emitted a noticeable howl when the car was moving.

There were a lot of complaints from car owners, so AvtoVAZ decided to refine the unit, improving the technology for processing gears and shafts, and in the summer of 2014, Granta with a quieter manual transmission began to roll off the car plant’s assembly line.

Characteristics of manual transmission Lada Granta

The Lada Kalina inherited two problems:

  • slight vibration during operation;
  • resistance when activating fifth gear.

In 2011, the manufacturer slightly modified the standard gearbox, replacing it with a manual transmission with a cable switch.

The new transmission is more reliable than the previous one, with improved shift quality. Outdated rods have been replaced with cables. The installation of a new type of synchronizers helped reduce the effort when activating the first and second gears.

The gear selection (switching) module was moved to the top of the manual transmission, reducing the negative impact of temperature conditions on the hinges. Modernization of the oil supply channel helped reduce the volume of liquid required for filling.

For example, an outdated model with metal rods had to be filled with 3.35 liters of oil, a modernized version with a cable drive - only 2.25 liters.

Note to the driver! In a new model manual transmission, it is strictly forbidden to fill in mineral-based gear oil, only semi-synthetic, synthetic.

The new modification of the manual transmission (2181) received a lock to control the activation of the reverse gear. We also changed the position of the “R” gear, making it more convenient to activate the rear gear. Previously, I had to constantly twist my elbow, which is inconvenient from a physiological point of view.

The overall gear activation force coefficient has decreased by 11%. Manual transmission 2181 is installed in the Lada Granta “Standard” version. While “Norma” and “Lux” are equipped with automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission

“Automatic” was installed on the car of the Togliatti Automobile Plant from July 2012 to March 2015 - this is 4 speed. Automatic transmission from Japanese manufacturer Jatco.

Grant's four-speed automatic transmission - model JF414E, classic type, with a torque converter; similar units are equipped in Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki passenger cars.

This type of transmission on Granta is paired only with the 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 power unit.

The gearbox is highly reliable; with careful operation and timely maintenance, it can run up to 200 thousand km.

It is necessary to replace the transmission fluid every 60 thousand km; the manufacturer recommends filling with Nissan branded ATF EJ-1 or Matic-S oil.

The quality of the Lada Granta automatic transmission does not cause any major complaints; if the transmission requires repair, it is mainly due to the fault of the driver:

  • as a result of slipping, the clutches burn out;
  • after overheating, gaskets and seals begin to leak;
  • When you hit an obstacle, the automatic transmission pan breaks through, and then a thorough repair is definitely required.

Car owners have more complaints about the performance characteristics of an automatic transmission - increased fuel consumption, sluggish acceleration of the car, jerking during gear changes during dynamic driving.

Reviews

Positive
1.Vladimir: I am satisfied with the build quality of the Lada Granta, there are no significant comments. I fix minor damage myself. This is a budget class car, so the shortcomings are quite obvious.
2.Kirill: I haven’t had any particular complaints about the car for a year and a half, I regularly visit service stations, carry out diagnostics and replacements. When purchasing consumables, I give preference to original ones and check the correspondence of the catalog items.
3.Vasily: I bought Granta with the new mechanics of version 2181, I am 100% satisfied with the quality of work. This is a breakthrough for domestic transport, well done. Minor breakdowns are present, but they are not so significant and can be easily repaired.
4.Dmitry: in two years of active use of the car, I changed the transmission oil and filter once. The unit is operating normally, there are no comments.
5.Alexander: during the year of active operation of the machine there were no problems, I did not contact the service unscheduled. I fixed minor breakdowns myself, without visiting a service station.
6.Alexander: I’m happy with the car, there have been no major breakdowns in a year and a half of use. I believe that systematic maintenance and careful handling of equipment are the main factors for trouble-free operation of the mechanism.
7.Ivan: I’ve heard a number of negative reviews about the Granta gearbox, but I can’t confirm it. There have been no major breakdowns in two years of use.
Negative
1.Sergey: extremely dissatisfied with the quality of manufacturing and assembly of components for the Lada Granta. The first time the oil seal leaked on the machine was already at 55,000 km. After 10,000 km, I replaced one of the drive cables.
2.Vasily: despite the promised service life of the transmission of 180,000 km, mine lasted only 65,000 km, after which I carried out preventive maintenance at a service station.
3.Victor: I’m disappointed with the build quality of the car, there are a lot of flaws, it’s a little damp. Elimination requires time, effort, and resources. It’s better to buy a Renault Logan, where the quality is proven and the breakdowns are insignificant.

Conclusion The serial installation of automatic transmissions on Lada Granta cars is a huge breakthrough for the domestic automobile industry. Japanese units have long been famous for their good quality, reliability, and unpretentiousness.

I believe that most breakdowns are caused by violation of the operating conditions of the technical equipment. Owners often save on timely maintenance and the purchase of original consumables. They pour cheap mineral-based oil into the system, which is strictly prohibited.

Robotic gearbox

The robotic gearbox replaced the 4-speed Jatco automatic transmission; manual transmission has been installed on the Grant since the beginning of spring 2015.

The basis of the mechanical part of the new AMT 2182 was the 2180 gearbox; instead of cables, as well as the standard pedal and clutch unit for “mechanics,” an electromechanical gearbox drive (mechatronics) from the German company ZF was installed here.

The robotic gearbox is only paired with a VAZ-21127 106 hp engine. s., the most powerful power unit installed on the Lada Granta.

The manual transmission can operate not only in automatic, but also in manual mode; there are a total of five gears in the box.

A car with AMT 2182 has become more economical than with an automatic transmission, the dynamics have also improved, and gasoline consumption has decreased.

Typical problems of a robotic gearbox.

The robotic gearbox is based on the 2180 transmission, so it does not have such a strong hum as the 2181 manual transmission.

However, in first and second gears, slight howls are observed, although after running in a new car, the noise may disappear.

Grant's gearbox may behave inappropriately - when driving in first gear and sharply pressing the accelerator pedal, second speed does not always engage, and a “slip” occurs.

A characteristic disadvantage of a manual transmission is jerks and jolts when changing gears; if the movement is dynamic, this unpleasant phenomenon is not observed during quiet driving.

But you can use the manual mode, and then the manual transmission practically becomes a “mechanics”.

Scheme of work

The clutch assembly is located between the power unit and the transmission. When you press the clutch pedal, the connection between the engine and the wheels is broken. At this moment, the driver activates the desired gear to continue driving.

“Mechanics” is a metal case, inside of which there are shafts and gears. One gear is rotated by a motor, the other transmits rotational motion to the wheels.

Gear shifting occurs using a lever (slide), which is located inside the car.

Note to the driver! First and reverse gears have the most power but the lowest speed.

In a manual transmission, the gear travel is significantly reduced compared to the traction mechanism. The location of the switching block (module) makes it possible to minimize the dependence of the transmission on the ambient temperature and the operating temperature of the engine.

In the 2181 series box, it was possible to significantly increase the service life by reducing possible oil leakage points. Two sealing glands instead of the previous four.

The average service life of mechanics before major repairs is 200,000 km.

The cable drive has already proven its unconditional advantage over the traction drive. The quality of gear engagement has improved. Despite the fact that the “box” is one of the most complex units in a car, provided it is treated with care and timely maintenance, critical problems do not arise.

Gearbox selection

All types of gearboxes on the Lada have their advantages and disadvantages, but even the domestically assembled Grant gearboxes do not cause very big problems for car owners.

If we do not take into account the slight noise of the mechanical part of the transmission, then we can say that the “robot” and “mechanics” are quite reliable, without pronounced characteristic “diseases”.

For those who like a leisurely drive and comfortable driving, an automatic transmission is best; there is only one drawback - increased gas consumption.

Features and characteristics of the machine gun on Grant

Acceleration to hundreds is 13.3 seconds. Maximum speed 173 km/h. The performance is non-racing and doesn’t smell like the luxury class, but the car is also a budget car, quite enough for the city and the highway.

The main element is the automatic transmission control lever, which is made in the traditional form for cars 20 years ago. The shifters, in which the gears were switched sequentially, could cause problems due to driver errors when changing gears - you could simply skip the right one. Modern ones are made in the form of ladders. Such technical solutions eliminate the problem of incorrect switching. A cable is responsible for shifting gears; although this scheme is a bit old, it is reliable.

A system of protection against unauthorized activation has been implemented. When driving at speed, the wrong gear (for example, reverse when moving forward) will not be engaged. This system is controlled by an electronic unit.

Automatic transmission for Lada Granta

The firmware installed on the control unit most likely differs from Nissan’s: after all, VAZ’s engines are different.

The automatic modes on the Lada Granta are traditional; no instructions are required:

P – parking mode;

R – reverse mode;

N – neutral gear;

D – forward movement to maximum gear;

2 – move forward to second gear;

1 – forward movement only in first gear.

The machine controls the electronic control unit (firmware is installed into it), it is responsible for the acceleration and switching characteristics. The automatic transmission control unit and the engine control unit interact in pairs.

There is protection against overheating (114 C), and the gear lights up. In conditions of negative temperatures, it is recommended to warm up the automatic transmission and engine by holding the car on the brake with the gear engaged, otherwise problems will soon arise with the gearbox. Until the box warms up, higher gears and torque converter locking will not engage. The locking mode is activated by the torque converter in 3rd and 4th gears.

Problems and repair of the Jatco machine

In total, a little more than 10,000 cars with automatic transmission were sold (so far these are mainly the Norma configuration, not the Luxury one), so it is still difficult to find out about problems with the automatic transmission version. How to find owners who have traveled more than 150,000 kilometers.

Dashboard of Lada Granta Norma configuration

A large range of spare parts makes repairing the JF414 simple and cheap; the box is similar to its relatives: RE4F03A, JF403E, JF506. One or another installation consumable from them may be suitable and cost much less.

This automatic transmission is installed on budget front-wheel drive cars; its design and characteristics have been simplified as much as possible. The first batch of automatic transmissions revealed problems with the bearing on the pump hub, which could completely collapse, however, this problem is unlikely to occur on modern versions of the transmission. The new version of the automatic transmission for VAZ comes with normal bearings.

Repair kits are poor in composition and do not have hydraulic block gaskets.

Rubber rings are consumables; they should be changed without waiting for the clutches to burn out, after 150,000-200,000 kilometers. In principle, whether the clutches are burned out or not, at such a mileage you need to change them too, you still have to disassemble the box, and even this is included in the kit.
