Today LADA Granta is one of the most popular domestic cars. This is due to the good quality of the vehicle, its unpretentiousness and very affordable price. In order for the machine to last as long as possible, you need to regularly monitor its technical condition.
One of the units that requires attention is the gearbox, where the oil in the Grant box is the main element. If you do not check the condition of the fluid in the gearbox and do not replace it in a timely manner, it may happen that the car will immediately be sent for expensive repairs.
What should I put in the Lada Granta transmission?
Initially, at the enterprise, engineers fill in Lukoil TM transmission fluid corresponding to the viscosity type 75W-80 - 75W-90, depending on the climatic conditions of the region where the vehicle is sold.
In order for the gearbox to work properly, when subsequently replacing consumables, AvtoVAZ recommends using:
- Novoil Trans KP;
- Rosneft Kinetic;
- Tatneft Translux;
- TNK for checkpoints;
- or C5.
In this case, it is important that the consumable lubricant meets the API standard - GL4 or GL 4/5. If domestically produced products do not suit you, then the best option would be to use liquid. If you believe consumer reviews and numerous tests, the products from this manufacturer are of quite high quality and are successfully used in many foreign cars.
It should also be noted that the oil that is poured from the factory into Grant and other models is of low quality. This is confirmed by reviews from car owners. The use of such a lubricant is fraught with the appearance of noise and new sounds when the vehicle is operating, so experts recommend immediately changing the substance to a better one. This will increase the service life of the unit. The TM you have chosen does not comply with the GL standard, so it is better to refrain from using it - of course, in practice it may be good, but our recommendations are based on information received from the manufacturer.
Selecting transmission fluid for Grants
Oil quality is one of the important indicators. When purchasing, you should make sure that the supplier is reliable so as not to purchase a fake. Semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids have proven themselves well. The instructions for the car indicate which substances should be used.
- Lukoil TM 4;
- Novoil Trans KP;
- Rosneft Konenik;
- Tatneft Translux TM4-12;
- Shell.
For the automatic transmission, the factory uses the following brands of transmission substances: Genuine EJ-1 ATF, Nissan ATF Matic-S, semi-synthetics from Lukoil.
Video “Replacing transmission lubricant in Lada Granta”
The step-by-step process of replacing consumables is presented in the video (the author of the video is).
All lubricants in a Lada Granta car must be of high quality, and gear oil is no exception. The lubricant must comply with general standards and be suitable for the specific machine. Oils differ in technical characteristics and come in different brands, so the motorist should know how to choose a good oil for the Lada Granta gearbox, which will extend the life of the gearbox.
Factory lubrication
All transmission oils are classified based on whether you have a manual or automatic transmission. Lada Granta engineers recommend using Genuine EJ-1 ATF oil in automatic transmissions, and Lukoil TM4 in manual transmissions. Depending on the region in which the car is operated, the viscosity class may be different. We recommend studying the Grants engine.
To avoid unexpected breakdowns and problems in the operation of the gearbox, AvtoVAZ designers have created a table from which you can select gear oil for a Lada Granta car. Before going to the store and buying the first lubricant you come across, we recommend that you study this table below.
The Granta manual transmission contains 3-3.5 liters of oil, and the level is checked with a dipstick. It needs to be changed every 75 thousand kilometers or once every five years. the procedure is performed in a convenient place, even at home, so there is no need to go to a service station.
Change frequency and types of oil used
According to the manufacturer's instructions, transmission oil in old Grants should be changed approximately every 70,000 kilometers, or once every five years (whichever comes first). In the case of gearbox 2181, the oil will have to be changed almost three times less often - once every 200,000 kilometers. Another important aspect regarding gearbox maintenance is checking the oil level and its consistency. For older boxes, a period of 15,000 kilometers between checks is set, and they have a special dipstick for checking the level. Box 2181 does not provide for oil level control, so there is no dipstick in the design.
In addition, in boxes 2181 and 2190 the volume of the transmission oil sump is significantly different - in old boxes it is 3.3 liters, in new ones it is 2.2. Be sure to remember this when changing the oil - an insufficient oil level (as well as an excessive one) will definitely not benefit the gearbox.
As a rule, the factory oil that is poured into Grant boxes is semi-synthetic and belongs to the GL-4 class. Below is information about the types of factory oil being poured (this does not mean that this is what you should fill in - there are better options on the market, but this information may be useful if you decide to add oil rather than make a complete replacement):
— For box 2190: LukOil TM-4 and ROSNEFT KINETIC 80W85 (these brands of oils were used for a short time, for several months from the start of production of the Lada Grant), TATNEFT TRANSLUX markings TM-4-12, 75W85 (used since 2012);
— For box 2181: TATNEFT TRANSLUX and ROSNEFT KINETIC marking 75W85.

What oils do Grant owners fill in?
Many car owners note a noticeable decrease in the noise level of the gearbox when using lubricants of the following brands:
- Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90
- Motul G300 75W-90
- CASTROL SYNTRAX UNIVERSAL PLUS 75W-90
The front-wheel drive passenger car VAZ Lada Granta is a variant of a budget car. The manufacturer installs three types of transmissions on cars: 5-speed, 4-speed and 5-speed.
All of these transmissions require periodic replacement of working fluids, that is, you need to know which gear oil is best for Grants. Next, we will look at which Lada Granta gearbox oils are optimal to use, as well as what to pay attention to when selecting transmission oils for the Lada Granta.

Lada Granta: transmission oil for manual, automatic and manual transmissions
Under the influence of temperature, mechanical and time factors, special additives contained in working fluids gradually lose their properties and cease to meet the technical requirements provided by the manufacturer.
As a result, the transmission is subject to increased wear and early failure. for LADA Granta are designed taking into account the characteristics of each box (technical, operational). The manufacturer recommends a certain type of working fluid that meets the necessary standards and requirements for the operation of the transmission.
Working fluid poured into the Lada Granta gearbox:
- oils used for mechanical and robotic gearboxes - semi-synthetic oil LUKOIL TM 4 75W-90 GL-4 (depending on the climatic conditions in which the car will be operated, the viscosity class may change: 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90);
- oils used for automatic transmissions - Genuine EJ-1 ATF.
If we consider the Lada Granta and manual transmission oil, the manufacturer does not provide for mandatory replacement of the working fluids of the Lada Granta manual transmission, since transmission fluids are designed for the entire service life of the vehicle. But in reality this is not entirely true. In order for a manual transmission to last for a long time, it must be done every 60,000 km.
List of some oils used in the Lada Granta manual transmission and recommended by the manufacturer:
- Kinetic mineral oil from Russian with viscosity classes: 80W-85 GL-4 or 75W-90 GL-4/5;
- Translux TM 4-12 oil from Russia with viscosity class 75W-85 GL-4, developed on a synthetic and semi-synthetic basis with a multifunctional additive package;
- all-season mineral oil TRANS KP from Russia with viscosity class 80W-85 GL-4;
- all-season semi-synthetic oil TRANS KP SUPER from Russia with viscosity class 75W-90 GL-4;
- synthetic oil Shell Spirax S5 ATE from European with viscosity class 75W-90 GL-4/5.
Please note that the working fluid level poured into the Lada Granta manual transmission is 3.2 liters. At the same time, during replacement it fits less, since it is not possible to drain some of the oil from hard-to-reach areas.
- If you need transmission oil Grenade automatic transmission, recommendations for the selection and timing of replacement are somewhat different from the “mechanics”. The Lada Granta with automatic transmission is a new product on the Russian market, since automatic transmissions were not so popular in VAZs, or rather, they were not installed en masse at all.
In the case of the Lada Granta, the manufacturer took the right path and did not develop a new automatic transmission for its car. Instead, the plant decided to use the already proven JF414E gearbox from. Since Jatco's reputation in the global arena of transmission manufacturers is beyond doubt, management decided to equip the Lada Granta model with the JF414E automatic transmission.
According to the recommendations of the manufacturer, there are no regulations for replacing transmission fluid in the automatic transmission of a Lada Granta car, since the fluid is filled for the entire service life of the car. In fact, transmission fluid, subjected to constant temperature and mechanical stress, ages and loses its properties.
Adjusted for many years of automatic transmission servicing practice, experts recommend carrying out a maximum of 50 thousand kilometers, and in used cars, reducing this interval by 30 or even 50%.
The VAZ manufacturer recommends Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF transmission fluid or an analogue of NISSAN ATF Matic-S for use in the Jatco automatic transmission on the Lada Granta. The chemical composition of the liquids is compatible and they can be mixed. There are also other less expensive analogues of gear oils, such as Aisin ATF AFW from a Japanese manufacturer.
The working fluid level poured into the Lada Granta automatic transmission, which is recommended by the manufacturer, is 5.1 liters. However, in reality it is possible to fill less, since it is impossible to completely drain all the waste from the unit without disassembling it.
- Transmission oil Grenade manual transmission is practically an analogue of lubricant for manual transmission. In other words, with a robotic gearbox installed on the Lada Granta, everything is much simpler than with an automatic transmission. The fact is that the operating principle of a robotic gearbox is very similar to the operating principle of a manual gearbox, in which the oil is not subjected to excessive overheating and pressure.
For this reason, the manufacturer decided to use in robotic transmissions the fluids used in the Lada Granta manual transmissions discussed above. This was done in order to optimize the company’s costs for the production and maintenance of manufactured cars.
What's the result?
Currently, VAZ is actively using technologies from the automobile corporation RENAULT - NISSAN. Many components and assemblies installed on Lada cars have undergone long-term testing under extreme conditions.
Accordingly, the transmission fluids used in the production of VAZ cars are also specially designed to work in various units (mechanical, automatic or robotic), both domestically developed and produced, and foreign.
For this reason, it is optimal to use only original fluids and oils (engine and transmission). It is also possible to switch to various analogues, but in this case you need to use products that are of high quality and fully comply with all the tolerances of the car manufacturer itself.
Oil change on Grant: gearbox
So, although the 2181 gearbox has become more reliable, as in any other unit, it is recommended to change the lubricant periodically. Otherwise, the service life of the gearbox may be significantly reduced, and problems with mileage may occur during operation (, etc.);
At the same time, the rules for changing the oil in the AvtoVAZ gearbox determine that the oil needs to be changed only if it is necessary to repair the gearbox when disassembling it, and also if the mileage has exceeded 200 thousand km. In other words, the oil is filled for the entire service life of the car.
Please note that although the oil in a transmission, especially a mechanical one, does not experience the same loads as motor oil in an engine or engine, it also tends to age, become dirty and lose its beneficial properties. Moreover, this happens, on average, already at 80 thousand km. mileage
You should also take into account the operating characteristics of the vehicle, the load on the transmission, the quality of the transmission oil itself, and possible minor leaks through oil seals, gaskets and seals. It is quite obvious that increased attention should be paid to the issue of the condition and level of oil in the gearbox. In simple words, the lubricant needs to be refreshed and changed.
Many people are also interested in what kind of oil is poured into the Grant gearbox at the factory. As a rule, at the factory, Tatneft Translux 75W85 or Rosneft Kinetic Service 75W85 is poured into the 2181 Lada Granta box. These are GL-4 class oils. For a complete change, you need to have 2.2 liters of gear oil.
Taking into account the fact that the manual does not indicate what kind of oil to pour into a Granta box with a cable drive, you can select the products indicated above. You should also study the recommendations in the manuals for other models with gearbox 2181, which allows you to expand the list of oils, that is, use analogues.
For example, G-BOX Expert 80W85 or 75W90 oil is suitable; Gazpromneft 80W90 or 80W85, TNK TRANS KP 80W85 or TNK TRANS KP SUPER 75W90, LUKOIL TM-4 75W85, 75W80, 80W85, 75W90 or 80W90, Rosneft KINETIC 80W85, SHELL SPIRAX S5 ATE or TRANSAXLE OIL 75W90, etc. You can also select other analogues (Liqui Moly, ZIC, etc.).
The main thing is that the product meets class GL-4 or GL-4/GL-5, but not GL-5, as well as all tolerances and standards recommended by the manufacturer. The fact is that GL-5 oils, on the one hand, are considered a more modern option, but they are more designed to protect gears and loaded surfaces. At the same time, the gearbox synchronizers, which are made of soft alloys, wear out greatly.
Also when choosing oil for the Grant gearbox within which a particular vehicle is operated. Briefly, if in winter the temperature does not drop below -12 and does not rise above +50 Celsius, then 85W90 oil is suitable.
A drop in temperature to -26 indicates the need to fill the box with 80W90. If the temperature rises above +35 in summer and drops to -40 in winter, then it is optimal to use 75W80 or 75W85 oils. In cases where the temperature rises to +45 in summer and drops to -40 in winter, then gear oil with a viscosity index of 75W90 is suitable.
Replacement frequency
The AvtoVAZ company has established clear oil change regulations that all Lada Granta owners must follow, regardless of the year of manufacture of the car. So, the replacement period is 70 thousand kilometers, and can only differ downwards. If the replacement is postponed until a later date, then you are guaranteed to encounter transmission failures. As for more frequent oil changes (before 70 thousand km), in this case it all depends on the operating conditions. There are so-called risk factors in which the oil will definitely have to be changed more often. Let's highlight some of them:
- Frequent driving on bad and dusty roads, including off-road, which is not provided for by the vehicle’s capabilities
- Regular driving at high speeds, sudden maneuvers, non-compliance with traffic regulations, including aggressive driving style
- Constant temperature changes, rapid climate change, dirt and slush on the roads
- The driver makes mistakes in shifting gears, and as a result, it overheats
This is not to say that the Lada Granta is not at all suitable for such conditions. Russian owners sometimes have to subject their car to high loads, given difficult climatic conditions. But it must be borne in mind that this will negatively affect the beneficial properties of the oils. As stated above, it will become unusable ahead of schedule. Therefore, it would be advisable to reduce the replacement frequency by two or three times - for example, change the oil every 50 or 40 thousand kilometers.
In addition, it would be a good idea to check the level and condition of the fluid in a timely manner so that you can make a timely replacement.
How to change the oil in a Lada Granta box yourself
First of all, before changing, you need to prepare the oil itself, the necessary keys, rags, a container for draining waste, a hose and a funnel, and also place the car on a flat platform with an inspection hole or lift it on a lift.
In some other cases, it may be necessary to replace the washer for the reverse switch with article number 21080-3512115-00. Please note that the washer is often identified in catalogs as the pressure regulator plug gasket. When searching, there are no analogues or substitutes.
- Let's move on. Before unscrewing the drain plug, it is advisable to warm up the gearbox. To do this, you should not stand and accelerate in neutral, as some owners do by mistake. The box warms up during operation, that is, under load. To raise the oil temperature in the gearbox, you need to drive the car 5-15 km (depending on the ambient temperature).
- After warming up the gearbox, the car needs to be driven into a pit or onto a lift, after which you need to remove the engine protection and unscrew the control plug with the key to “17”. It is highly advisable to remove this plug, as otherwise it will be difficult to control the oil level in the gearbox during replacement.
- The next step is to unscrew the switch, which is located on top of the crankcase. To gain access, you need to remove the filter. To do this, remove the negative terminal and unscrew the fastening screws. By the way, the clamp that secures the expansion tank hose will need to be removed.
- Then you need to disconnect the connector, as well as the canister valve connector. In the second case, you need to tighten the tongue and move the terminal block to the side. When finished, the filter housing can be moved away, but it should not be disconnected from the corrugation.
- The rubber fasteners are removed in such a way that the rubber element is held with pliers, while the body is shifted back, to the left, and then you need to move it forward.
It is better to start removal from the support on the front left. To remove the reverse switch on the gearbox, located on top of the crankcase, you need to disconnect the plastic connector. Next, use the key to “22” to unscrew the switch body. Please note that when reinstalling it, the threads must be coated with sealant; when tightening, the tightening torque is maintained at 28-45 N m. - After unscrewing, you can begin to drain the oil from the Lada Granta gearbox. To do this, you will need to unscrew the bottom drain plug with a 17 wrench. Before unscrewing, place a container under the plug, then use the key to make 1.5-2 turns. Next, the plug is carefully unscrewed by hand.
- After the waste has completely drained out of the gearbox, you can wipe the outside of the crankcase with a clean rag. After this, the plug is tightened, the tightening torque is 29-46 Newtons.
- Now you are ready to add fresh oil. If you imagine that oil is being poured through the switch hole and the control plug is unscrewed, then you need to place a hose in the switch hole, install a funnel and pour oil. The total volume of oil in the Lada Granta gearbox is 3 liters, and the filling volume is usually 2.2. liters Oil must be poured gradually, in small portions.
- You can also fill the lubricant through the control hole (in this case, you do not need to unscrew the switch, but filling the gearbox with oil will be less convenient; you may need a syringe, a long flexible hose, etc.).
Let’s also add that if you couldn’t unscrew the control plug, fill the gearbox with exactly 2.2 liters of oil. Please note that when checking the oil level in the Grant gearbox through the hole, it is recommended to tilt the body slightly to the right to obtain the most accurate reading. To tilt the body, you can put some weight in the passenger compartment or trunk, achieving a small tilt angle (no more than 3 degrees). - After the level has approached the required mark, all plugs, the switch (when removing it) and other connections are tightened with the recommended tightening torques. A filter is also put in place. Before installing the filter and protection, it is best to remove oil spills from the gearbox boat and other surfaces with clean rags.
As a rule, in order not to unscrew the switch, many people fill the oil through the control hole. In this case, there is no need to remove the filter, which simplifies the process. However, on the other hand, pouring oil through the control hole is less convenient.
Experts recommend filling transmission oil into the Lada Granta gearbox using a special syringe, which is sold in various auto stores and points of sale of auto products. This approach allows you to get rid of possible oil leaks when a rubber hose and funnel are used.
We also note that before replacing the gearbox lubricant, the gearbox itself must be warmed up. In this case, it is possible to achieve the most complete drainage of waste from the unit.
By the way, you can only use high-quality oil for replacement, which, in terms of tolerances and properties, meets the recommendations of the car manufacturer. Requirements and recommendations are specified separately in the manual. At the same time, you need to avoid products that differ in properties (for example, mixing synthetics and semi-synthetics).
If the oil was first drained, and then it turned out that the control plug cannot be unscrewed, the replacement can be done through the switch. In this case, when unscrewing the switch, it is often necessary to replace the copper washer as a result of deformation of the existing element. The washer part number is listed separately above.
To check the level without unscrewing the control hole plug, you will need to completely drain the oil from the box, and then pour exactly 2.2 liters of fresh transmission fluid into the Lada Granta gearbox.
Even taking into account the fact that the total filling volume is 2.3 liters, you need to remember that the remains of old oil remain on the surfaces of the parts, that is, they cannot be drained. It turns out, .
Preparing for replacement
First the box needs to be warmed up. Then they place the car on the pit, stop it and try to remove one plug. We are talking about the control plug (key “17”).
View from under the crankcase protection
If nothing happens with the plug, you will have to change the oil without supervision. This is no longer good. Try unscrewing the switch located on the top of the crankcase.
The oil volume in the Lada Granta gearbox is known to everyone - it is 2.3 liters. But it is still better to perform the replacement with control. Filling is done either through the control hole or through the switch hole. Access to the latter is blocked by a filter.
Filter housing operation
First, disconnect the “negative” terminal (key “10”). Then you can use a regular Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws.
The first two dismantling steps
The thin clamp that secures the expansion tank hose is also removed (see photo).
Disconnect a couple of connectors: the mass air flow sensor and the adsorber valve connector. The first of them is oval (photo below). And the second one is turned off like this: tighten the tongue, remove the terminal block.
Down with all terminal blocks!
The filter housing can be moved to the side in the final step. There is no need to disconnect it from the corrugation.
Rubber fasteners can be defeated this way: the rubber band is held with pliers, and the body is pulled back (to the left, forward). Start with the right front support.
Reconnaissance in force
We are trying to remove the reverse switch. We look for a plastic connector on the crankcase (see photo) and immediately disconnect it.
View of the gearbox housing from under the hood
Using a 22mm round wrench, try to unscrew the switch housing. Cancel the replacement if nothing can be done - neither unscrew the “top” plug, nor remove the switch.
When the switch is returned to its place, the threads are treated with sealant. The tightening torque should be 28-45 N*m.

Gearbox oil for Lada Granta with manual transmission and AMT
TOTAL TRANSMISSION GEAR 8 75W80 transmission oil is intended for manual transmissions of passenger cars and complies with the API GL4+ standard. TOTAL specialists recommend pouring this oil into the Granta gearbox when replacing it during service (for cars with manual or robotic transmission). It has excellent protective properties and protects transmission parts from premature wear and corrosion in any operating conditions, increasing the service life of the unit. The stability of the characteristics of TOTAL TRANSMISSION GEAR 8 75W80 allows the use of this oil in Lada Granta gearboxes with the maximum permissible service intervals.
When changing the oil in a Granta gearbox, you can also use TOTAL TRANSMISSION DUAL 9 FE 75W90 - this gear oil is 100% synthetic and has a level of properties that meets API GL-4, GL-5 and MT-1 standards. Thanks to FUEL ECONOMY (FE) technology, the use of this oil in the Lada Granta gearbox reduces fuel consumption compared to conventional lubricants. Its high extreme pressure properties guarantee reliable protection of transmission elements from wear and corrosion. TOTAL TRANSMISSION DUAL 9 FE 75W90 has high oxidation resistance, which allows it to be used in Granta gearboxes with extended replacement intervals (as prescribed by the car manufacturer).
Common mistakes
- There is no need to chase the “GL-5 quality class”. When using oils of this class, gears are better preserved, but the durability of synchronizers is reduced. The reason is the presence of “additives” and “supplements”.
- Decide when to change the oil in the Lada Granta box. The winter replacement option is not the best. Oil thickens in the cold, but we don’t need that.
- You need to warm up the box while moving. There is an option “gas to the floor while standing in neutral,” but it is very ineffective.
