On a VAZ 2114 the idle speed fluctuates for reasons

Idle speed VAZ 2114

The idle speed of the VAZ 2114, as in other cars of the Samara family, is regulated using an idle speed sensor. Also, this sensor is responsible for stabilizing the engine at idle speed.

Previously, we have already talked about the idle speed of the VAZ, but this was more general information, but within the framework of this article, we will consider this issue exclusively in relation to the VAZ 2114 car.

Where is the idle speed sensor located on the VAZ 2114?

To regulate and control the idle speed of the VAZ 2114, you need to understand where the unit responsible for it is located: the idle speed sensor. Finding it is not at all difficult: it is located directly next to the throttle valve. It is attached with two screws, but in rare cases you can find sensors on the “fourteenths” that are glued to the varnish.

How does the VAZ 2114 idle speed sensor work?

To fully understand how the VAZ 2114 engine operates at idle, you need to understand the principle of operation of the idle speed sensor, which, in fact, creates the conditions for this mode of engine operation.

It all starts when you turn the key in the ignition. At this moment, a rod extends from the idle speed sensor, which enters a special calibration hole, which is located on the throttle pipe. Next, the sensor counts a certain number of steps, after which it returns the valve to its original position. For example, we can cite the most popular manufacturer of these valves - Bosch

. She takes 50 steps on a warm engine.

Further, while the engine is idling, the speed is constantly adjusted due to the displacement of the rod in the calibration hole. In fact, regulation is carried out by changing the volume of supplied air.

It is important to note that the idle speed of the VAZ 2114 is regulated not only by the idle speed sensor

. It is also assisted by other vehicle systems. So, for example, the amount of supplied air is controlled by the mass air flow sensor; it supplies the idle speed sensor with information about how much air the engine absorbs, and after that the idle speed sensor makes a decision to increase or decrease the amount of supplied air masses.

The crankshaft sensor helps the idle speed sensor monitor engine speed. From it, the idle speed sensor receives information about the frequency, which it compares with the set norm and, if necessary, adjusts the volume of supplied air.

What signs can be used to determine a malfunction of the idle speed sensor on a VAZ 2114?

Much to the regret of VAZ 2114 owners, the idle speed sensor is not equipped with an automatic fault diagnosis system, so neither the “check” nor the car’s on-board computer will indicate problems with adjusting the idle speed of the VAZ 2114.

Fortunately, the experience of real owners of the VAZ 2114 made it possible to create a list of typical signs by which it can be determined that the idle speed sensor of the VAZ 2114 needs attention:

Sign 1:

The car began to stall while idling.

Sign 2:

When the VAZ 2114 engine is running in idle mode, the engine speed fluctuates.

Sign 3:

during “cold” engine idling, no increased rotation speed is observed.

Sign 4:

When the VAZ 2114 engine is idling, the engine stalls when the car is removed from gear.

If you find one of the problems described above, then the first thing you will have to do is clean the idle speed sensor, inspect it and decide on further manipulations: repair or complete replacement.

It is worth noting!

Even in cases where it is possible to repair the idle speed sensor, it is still better to replace it - it is more reliable and durable.

What number of idle speeds is considered normal for a VAZ 2114?

Like any other car, the VAZ 2114 has its own regulated speed limit for the car’s engine at idle. In the case of the “fourteenth”, this norm is at the level of 800 rpm. Let's assume a deviation is considered to be 40 revolutions per minute, both positive and negative.

How much will a new idle speed sensor cost?

As you can already understand, normal idle speed of the VAZ 2114 cannot exist without a working idle speed sensor. Just as we have already noted above, the best solution to the problem with idling of the VAZ 2114 is to replace the vehicle's idle speed sensor. It is for this reason that we decided to find out how much this machine unit costs. It turned out that this is a fairly cheap spare part: about 350 rubles. At the same time, we note that we have come across idle speed sensors that are much more expensive - a waste of money, and much cheaper - unreliable and short-lived.

How to clean the idle air control (IAC)?

When there is a problem with low idle speed on a warm engine, in some cases it can be eliminated by flushing the IAC. To do this, de-energize the car. The regulator is located on the throttle assembly, below the TPS (throttle position sensor). You should prepare a clean rag, a screwdriver, liquid in an aerosol can - this can be any product for cleaning carburetors or injectors.

Cleaning begins with dismantling - to remove it, just unscrew the mounting screws. Sometimes there are also bolts. Once the sensor has been removed from its mounting location, the cleaning process can begin. The work is carried out using rags treated with liquid from a spray can.

It is also necessary to spray the needle from the can. The latter on various car models can be either metal or plastic. The cleaner will not damage the plastic. But the liquid should not get under the spring. If this does happen, it is recommended to blow out the sensor with compressed air as quickly as possible. If this is not done, the liquid will wash out the internal lubricant, which will cause complete failure of the IAC.

Adjusting the injector on a VAZ-2114

Today, the carburetor on gasoline engines, so familiar to us, is gradually being replaced by a more advanced mechanism - the injector. The impetus for the development of a new fuel system back in the 60-70s was the need to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and reduce the harm from exhaust emissions. The emergence of new injection engines has made it possible to successfully solve this problem.

Advantages

But reducing emissions is not the only advantage of injectors compared to an older carburetor. There are many more advantages:

- firstly, the air-fuel mixture is dosed perfectly under the control of the computer, which can significantly reduce vehicle consumption. In practice, an injection engine is 20-30% more economical than its carburetor predecessor;

— secondly, the toxicity of exhaust gases is reduced significantly. This was largely possible thanks to the use of special sensors;

— thirdly, the power of the power unit increases by an average of 10-12%. This is due to a clear setting of the advance angle (here the electronics come into force), as well as an increase in the quality of filling the cylinders;

— fourthly, the dynamic properties of the car are significantly improved, it becomes more playful and responsive during acceleration. The electronics respond perfectly to the driver’s commands, accurately and efficiently adjust the air-fuel mixture;

- fifthly, the car becomes much easier to start at any temperature (carburetor engines could rarely boast of this).

It is important to note that the operation of the system directly depends on the program flashed into the ECU and information received from numerous sensors. Thus, the following controllers take part in the operation of the system: throttle position, mass air flow, crankshaft position, coolant temperature, detonation and oxygen.

When to make adjustments?

Despite its reliability, the injector is not a perfect system. There are also possible failures here that the car enthusiast can correct and correct. For example, during operation, unpleasant “dips” of the engine may appear, fuel consumption will increase, and “floating” idle speed may occur. All this may be evidence of incorrect injector settings.

Causes of malfunction

Among the reasons leading to improper engine operation in idle mode are problems with sensors that transmit information to the electronic control unit. These include sensor malfunctions:

  • idle speed controller (IAC);
  • mass air flow (MAF);
  • crankshaft position (CPCV);
  • throttle valve position;
  • vehicle speed (VSA).

The appearance of floating crankshaft speeds also causes:

  • malfunction of the idle speed solenoid valve;
  • dirty air filter and spark plugs;
  • damage to high-voltage wires;
  • wear of gaskets and plugs at the junction of the intake manifold with the cylinders;
  • malfunction of the EGR valve, which regulates exhaust gas emissions.

We clarify how to adjust the idle speed on a VAZ 2114

Every car enthusiast with extensive driving experience remembers when Russian roads were filled with Zhiguli and Muscovites. These cars were distinguished by the fact that almost every car enthusiast could repair them on his own.

The VAZ 2114 is also a fairly simple car when it comes to repairs. Any car enthusiast who has at least a little knowledge of cars can cope with troubleshooting this machine.

Almost all the key elements of this car can be adjusted mechanically, but some parts of the car cannot be repaired using the old-fashioned method.

The cause of a stalled engine is a power supply failure

In this type of problem, 3 reasons may be involved:

  • Poor contact with the terminals of the new battery;
  • Detection of poor contact or breakdown along the entire length of high-voltage wires;
  • The appearance of malfunctions in the generator or ignition coil system of the car.

If the problem lies in damp high-voltage wires, then it is best to replace them completely along with the battery contacts. If the terminals make poor contact, you need to carefully clean them with sandpaper and try to reconnect them.

If the generator is found to be inoperable, the problem usually boils down to problems in the following parts:

  1. Broken timing belt;
  2. There is a malfunction inside the housing of the unit itself.

A problem with the generator is easily detected when the corresponding indicator on the dashboard turns on. In addition, if there is insufficient energy supply, the backlight of the on-board panel will gradually fade, and a set of other diagnostic sensors will show incorrect values.

From the list of reasons that are directly related to the car engine, you need to move on to problems that arise in the fuel and air supply systems, as well as malfunctions of components responsible for exhaust gas removal.

How to increase idle speed on an injector VAZ 2114

The low speed of the VAZ 2114 can be adjusted using a special sensor for idle speed, although in a modern VAZ it is no longer as easy to adjust the idle speed as it was before. In order to understand all the nuances, you should study the structure of some elements of the car.

What does the injector consist of?

The injector on this car does not consist of one part, but is a complex structure that includes:

Each part of the injector performs a specific function, so even if any sensors fail, the functioning of the car can be seriously impaired. In order to correct the situation, the help of a qualified technician may be required.

Sensors

Today, various technologies and methods are used to supply fuel to the VAZ 2114. This process is monitored using sensors. In addition, the car is equipped with additional tracking systems that make it possible to determine the indirect reasons for its overuse.

The most popular of them are the following:

Trouble-shooting

Checking and adjusting engine idle speed and CO level

Twice a year or every 10,000 km (whichever comes first)

The idle speed is adjusted at the factory and no additional adjustment is required.

Only if the CO content after long-term operation ceases to meet the standards, the carburetor should be adjusted.

Carburetor

  1. With servo control installed, set the front wheels to the center position. The handbrake should be set.
  • The battery must be charged.
  • The engine oil and coolant levels must be within the required values.
  • All vacuum hoses must be connected.
  • The air intake system must be sealed.
  • The cylinders must have good compression.
  • The exhaust gas return system must function flawlessly.
  • The throttle valve should open and close well.
  • Turn off all electrical consumers, such as headlights, heater fan, rear window defroster, etc.
  • The cooling fan should not be running.
  1. Warm up the engine, i.e. the needle of the remote thermometer should be in the middle position. During adjustment, the engine must maintain its operating temperature, i.e. the engine should be started during pauses to warm it up again. The engine must run at less than 1000 rpm.
  2. Connect the tachometer according to the operating instructions.
  3. Start the engine and look through the carburetor sight glass to check that the fuel level is at the center line.
  4. Accelerate the engine for two or three minutes to a speed of 2000 - 3000 rpm and then let it idle for one minute.
  5. Read the idle speed on the tachometer. The engine should operate at a speed of 750±50 rpm.
  6. If the idle speed does not meet the required value, turn the screw until the value is within the required range. If the idle speed cannot be adjusted and all of the above systems are in good condition, the carburetor may need to be replaced.

The knurled bolt is used to adjust the carburetor.

  1. Turn off the engine. The tachometer remains connected.
  2. In the middle of the exhaust manifold cover, disconnect the lambda probe plug. The second plug should be disconnected from the intake air control valve. It is located in the position shown in the illustration on the right side of the ignition coil in front of the suspension strut (when standing in front of the engine compartment).
Position of the intake air control valve (1) next to the ignition coil (2).
  1. On the right, next to the heat shield of the exhaust manifold, you can see the intake tube for measuring CO content. Remove the tube cap and connect the CO meter according to the instructions. The connection between the measuring device and the tube must be sealed.
  2. Start the engine, accelerate it to 2000 - 3000 rpm and then return to idle. Read the device readings. The value should be within 1.0±0.5%. If the CO content does not meet the required value, you should rotate the adjusting screw inserted into the throttle valve block. It is sealed to prevent unauthorized rotation. Since the carburetor must be removed, among other things, in order to drill out the seal, it is recommended that this work be carried out by a specialized workshop. The illustration shows the location of the seal. If you do the work yourself, do not drill the filling too deep. After drilling out the seal, reinstall the carburetor and rotate the screw inside with a regular screwdriver until the CO value is within the required limits. After adjustment, check the idle speed again and finally insert a new seal into the hole. There is no need to remove the carburetor for this.
The seal (1) for the screw for adjusting the CO content in the throttle body (2) can be drilled in the indicated manner using a drill (3).

Cars without catalyst

The idle speed is adjustable, just like on models with a catalyst, however, to adjust the mixture composition, you need a special screwdriver that is inserted into the notches of the adjusting screw (see illustration below), a tachometer and, to achieve better results, a device for measuring CO content. If necessary, work can be carried out without the latter device if the instructions are strictly followed, but please be aware of environmental laws.

  1. First, adjust the idle speed.
  2. Carry out the preparatory operations already described and take tachometer readings. If the idle speed is outside 750±50 rpm, the idle speed must be adjusted. The idle speed adjustment screw looks the same as shown in the illustration. Check the CO content using a suitable device and adjust if necessary.

Without CO meter

  1. Check that the engine is at its operating temperature.
  2. To adjust the mixture composition there is a screw under the idle speed adjustment screw. Screw this screw in completely using a special screwdriver (not too tight) and back out two full turns. The idle speed should increase by 50 rpm compared to the existing value.
  3. Using a special screwdriver, turn the mixture adjustment screw so that the engine runs at the highest possible speed. After this, screw in the idle speed adjustment screw until the engine operates at the speed corresponding to the Specifications. The CO content should more or less correspond to the required value, i.e. it should be within 1.5±0.5%.

Using a CO meter

  1. Adjust the idle speed as already described.
  2. Check that the engine is still at operating temperature.
  3. Connect the CO content meter. The hose must be pushed into the exhaust pipe at least 40 cm.
  4. Check through the carburetor sight glass that the fuel level is at the center line.
  5. Using a special screwdriver, turn the mixture adjustment screw so that the device shows a value of 1.5±0.5%.
  6. Repeat the described adjustments until the CO content and speed correspond to the required values.

Multi-position injection system

Adjustment of idle speed and CO content is usually maintained automatically by the control unit, however, it may be necessary to make adjustments if, after prolonged use, the idle speed does not meet the requirements. It is best to contact a Nissan workshop, but if you strictly follow the following description, you can adjust the idle speed yourself.

Before checking and adjusting, the following conditions must be met, i.e. the following elements and systems must be in perfect condition.

Central injection system
Position of the idle speed adjustment screw (1) on the SR20Di engine.

The injection system automatically adjusts the idle speed to a set value.

Idle speed is controlled by finely adjusting the amount of air that bypasses the throttle valve through the auxiliary air valve. The extra air valve turns on and off to precisely control the amount of air. The crankshaft angle sensor monitors the exact number of engine revolutions and reports information to the control unit.

Based on the received data, the control device turns on or off the additional air valve to maintain the idle speed at a pre-programmed value. Other factors such as engine warm-up, coasting, fuel consumption and engine load (air conditioning, electrical load) are automatically assessed and compensated.

Broken wiring

How to adjust idle speed on a VAZ 2114 injector

In order to successfully cope with this task, you should make sure that the idle speed regulator is working properly. What engine speed should the VAZ 2114 be at idle?

Most importantly, they should not float. This is one of the main conditions. In a situation where floating engine speeds occur or the normal functioning of the engine is disrupted when the driver puts the car in neutral, you should think about the causes of the malfunction.

In some cases, the speed increases while the engine is fully warmed up. All this indicates problems associated with the operation of the idle air regulator. The reason may also be a lean mixture.

Another malfunction that may be a consequence of improper operation of the regulator is too low speeds on an engine that is not yet sufficiently warmed up.

The cause of the malfunction is often too much air supply.

In order to make the adjustment, you will need a computer capable of collecting data from a wide variety of sensors installed on the car. It is impossible to do this manually. This means that you won’t be able to do it on your own. Repairs require special equipment.

Additional Information. How can you save on repairs? To ensure that the adjustment does not cost too much, you can look for a private mechanic who has the necessary equipment for repairs.

Using a computer, you can open one or another valve. It is almost impossible to do this otherwise. Under no circumstances should you try to open the valve manually, because this can be dangerous not only for your health, but also for the car, which will completely fail if repaired incorrectly.

It is necessary to open the valve using a computer only with a certain value. If you do not comply with this indicator, then the adjustment will also not work.

EGR valve

The EGR valve is a rather complex exhaust gas recirculation device. The sensor is designed to return some of the gases to the exhaust manifold. The system is widely used in diesel and gasoline engines, reducing pumping losses, preventing detonation and harsh idling of the power unit. In engines on VAZ cars, the EGR closes at idle, providing no more than 10% oxygen at light loads. One of the advantages of the valve in question is the reduction in emissions into the atmosphere.

EGR extremely rarely causes the VAZ 2114 idle speed to jump , but the valve seat needs periodic cleaning.

Otherwise, the injection engine will exhibit unstable operation. Cleaning is carried out using special sprays. Typically, such substances are used for carburetor engines.

During the cleaning process, it is necessary to avoid contact of the substance with the EGR sensor diaphragm.

Carburetor engine VAZ 2114

There is no ECU on the “fourteenth” model with a carburetor engine. But such versions also have problems with floating speed. Such situations are less common than when operating an injection engine and are due to the following reasons:

  • Idle speed control failure. The driver will need to adjust the speed within 800-900;
  • Damage to the solenoid valve. The problem is solved by repairing or replacing the part in question. A breakdown is indicated by stable operation of the motor with the choke extended;
  • contamination of idle channels. In this case, the mixture does not receive the required amount of air. To fix the problem, you need to clean the channels;
  • nozzle contamination. Solved in a similar way;
  • the filter gets clogged. It is necessary to replace the consumable.

VAZ 2114 has low idle speed

What needs to be done to adjust the operation of such an important part of the car?

Now it's time to turn on the power. The engine should be started. If you still cannot fix the problems, you will have to disassemble the regulator a second time. If the next attempt is unsuccessful, the driver should be advised to reflash the on-board computer.

This may be relevant for those who purchased a car on the secondary market, but reflashing is a last resort. Usually all car owners just need to disassemble the regulator and repair it.

Reduced compression in the combustion chamber

The car engine must be clean and dry. Regular care of its surface will help you identify various leaks of working fluids in time, contact the workshop in time and prevent yourself from even greater expenses. It is especially useful to notice oil leaks in time. There can be several reasons for an oil leak. These include used oil seals, cover and pan gaskets, spark plug wells and many others. But we are looking at reduced compression, which is often associated with a damaged cylinder head gasket. Intense leakage of oil, pushed by pressure from the cylinder block, is visible on the surface of the engine.

Destruction of the gasket leads to unstable engine operation and can lead to more dangerous consequences, such as coolant getting into the oil, disruption of the block geometry, and even water hammer.

By promptly replacing a damaged gasket, you can protect your car from serious damage and keep it clean and dry.

Adjusting the idle speed

Each part of the injector performs a specific function, so even if any sensors fail, the functioning of the car can be seriously impaired. In order to correct the situation, the help of a qualified technician may be required.

Sensors

Today, various technologies and methods are used to supply fuel to the VAZ 2114. This process is monitored using sensors. In addition, the car is equipped with additional tracking systems that make it possible to determine the indirect reasons for its overuse.

The most popular of them are the following:

Carburetor internal combustion engines

Here the vast majority of reasons lie in the dosing device itself. High idle speed in this case is due to:

  1. Incorrect idle speed setting. It is necessary to adjust the composition of the mixture supplied to the carburetor using the appropriate screws.
  2. A jammed air damper: if it does not open completely, little air will flow into the cylinders.
  3. The shutter of the 1st chamber. It may not close completely due to a mechanical defect or an incorrectly adjusted actuator.
  4. Fuel level in carburetor float chamber too high

Ignition system

The reason for floating speed may lie in a damaged ignition distributor cap, high-voltage wires or spark plugs. These elements should be checked and replaced if necessary.

It is also worth noting completely banal reasons that are typical for both types of engines: incorrect adjustment of the accelerator pedal drive and jamming of the accelerator pedal itself, associated with corrosion of the mounting shaft and spring due to the car being idle for a long time.

Throttle valve

If after all the checks and measurements carried out above it was not possible to identify a malfunction, then all that remains is to check the condition of the throttle valve assembly. To do this, the part should be dismantled and then cleaned of dirt using cotton swabs. The cleaned part (or rather, all its pipes and tubules) is blown with compressed air using a compressor.

Cleaning the throttle VAZ 2114

Special attention should be paid to the channel that serves to remove gases from the crankcase. Before starting purging, it should be filled with a cleaning compound and allowed to stand for some time, after which the purging itself should be performed. This is caused by the extremely small diameter of the internal channel, as a result of which other methods of cleaning it are simply not available.

In addition to all of the above breakdowns, a breakdown of the DPKV sensor, as well as the Hall sensor, can also lead to “floating” speed. If they fail, the Check Engine light will light up on the car panel. If such a malfunction occurs, it is best to contact a service center, since special equipment is required to check these sensors.

Causes of failure. Node check

The reasons for the malfunction of the XX regulator are breaks in the electrical winding. engine and needle jamming due to dirt or corrosion. But the sensor is not always the “culprit” for missing idle speed. Therefore, before removing and checking the sensor, check its power supply circuit.

For all checks you will need a multimeter. The power circuit is checked with a device set to “voltmeter” mode. Diagnostics is simple - we disconnect the block with wires from the regulator, connect the “negative” probe of the multimeter to ground, and the positive one to the terminals marked with the letters “A” and “D”. With the ignition on, we take measurements. If the circuit is working properly, the readings should correspond to the rated voltage of the circuit. If there is no voltage, you should check the computer and relays responsible for powering the sensor.

To make it easier to check the sensor itself, remove it from the car. To do this, you only need a screwdriver. To remove a part you need:

The element is checked with the same multimeter, but switched to “ohmmeter” mode. We first connect the probes to terminals “A” and “B”, and then to “C” and “D”. With this measurement, the readings are 50-55 Ohms. Then we connect the probes to terminals “A” and “C”, and then to “B” and “D”. During this test, the ohmmeter shows infinity.

If the readings are correct, there is no break inside the sensor, and its incorrect operation is due to the needle getting jammed.

There is an alternative verification method that does not require the use of measuring instruments. This check is simple:

If the element is working properly, when the ignition is turned on, the needle will move, which will be clearly felt by your finger. Needle jamming can be eliminated by washing. For these purposes, use WD-40 or carburetor cleaning aerosol. We use these products to treat the needle and spring. Next, we dry the sensor and check its functionality. If a break in the winding in the regulator is detected or washing does not bring results, we replace the part.

Something else useful for you:

Injector

Here everything is much more complicated: the operation of an injection engine is associated with many sensors, ECUs and other elements of the power unit, in particular the fuel system. But first things first.

Idle air control sensor (IAC)

If this device is faulty, the engine may stall at idle, or its speed will float, making jumps in the range of approximately 600-1200 rpm. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the device is working properly. This can be done using a multimeter. Procedure:

  1. First, measure the supply voltage on a pair of outer terminals A and D. To do this, place the black probe of the device to ground (any unpainted metal part of the car body), and the red one to the indicated terminals in turn. When the ignition is on, there should be 12 V. If this is not the case, check the voltage at the ECU terminals (for the VAZ 2110 these are pins 4 and 54). If there is 12 V here, look for an open circuit in the wiring.
  2. Set the tester to ohmmeter mode. Resistance between terminals A and B, C and D: should be 40-80 Ohms.
  3. Check the motor for short circuit. To do this, measure the resistance between A and D, B and C: the arrow of the device should tend to infinity.

That is, a throttle position sensor, which is responsible for the amount of fuel mixing with air. If the fuel supply is incorrect, the ECU will automatically give a command and the idle speed will increase. Therefore, it is necessary to check the TPS:

  1. Unclip the connector that fits the sensor: you will see 3 contacts: for the control signal, power and ground.
  2. Start the engine and measure the voltage at the power terminal: it should be approximately 5 V.
  3. Stop the engine and switch the tester to resistance measurement mode (throttle valve closed). Measure it between ground and signal contact: it should be 0.8-1.2 kOhm. When the damper is closed, the value is 2.3-2.7 kOhm.

Repair rules

The idle speed regulator is a special executive function that is necessary for the engine to operate in normal mode. If it turns out to be faulty, the indicator that indicates this fault will not light up. This means that identifying the problem can be quite simple. All that remains is to eliminate it as soon as possible.

The regulator is a stepper motor that makes it possible to guarantee a certain level of air flow that bypasses the closed damper.

The flow level is set by the car's electronics. Such a complex system allows the motor to operate as evenly and stably as possible. Also, the electronic system of the machine performs the function of protecting against external factors, because the engine operates normally under almost any circumstances.

If the car stalls in neutral...

There are a lot of reasons why a VAZ 2114 with an injector may not work properly when cold. Among them:

  • “dying” fuel pump;
  • IAC malfunction;
  • injector clogging;
  • DTOZh malfunction.

IAC (idle air control) is one of the “favorites” of VAZ owners. In addition to stalling, its malfunction is indicated by unstable idle speed. While driving, the car may stall when you switch off the gear or release the gas. The regulator is checked with a multimeter, measuring (with the ignition off) the resistance at the outputs. On pairs of terminals AB, CD there should be ≈ 53 Ohms. There is infinity between AC and BD. If this is not the case, the IAC needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Contaminated IAC

Injector clogging is common due to fuel of questionable quality at half of the country's gas stations. Often the problem is solved by purging with an injector or carburetor cleaner. It's worse if the injectors are clogged. Sometimes it is possible to clean them manually using special chemicals, but more often only ultrasonic cleaning in the service or replacement can help.

The fuel pump does not always “die” immediately. More often than not, problems grow gradually. Listen to its sound when you turn the ignition. If it becomes louder or quieter than usual, this is a signal. Fuel pump malfunctions manifest themselves in different ways, to the point where the car cannot be started. If the car stalls in neutral or when braking, but operates normally in other modes, the fine filter mesh may be clogged.

Ignition. The ignition system on a VAZ does not fail very often, but this option cannot be discarded. The main source of problems is candles. Change them according to the regulations, and there will be no problems. The cause may also be high-voltage wires and the ignition module.

“Armored wires” never fail at the same time. Due to a malfunction of one or even two of them, the machine shakes a lot, but works. But the gradual failure of the ignition coil winding can be the reason that the car immediately stalls, and after starting it will work as if nothing had happened. If this situation repeats periodically without apparent logic, a short-term loss of spark may occur.

Main adjustment steps

The adjustment, as mentioned above, is carried out using quality and speed screws.

XX speed and mixture quality screws

These screws are located deep in the carb valve body. On some modifications of carburetors, bushings are also pressed onto the screws, which limit turns. In this case, you can only rotate them half a turn.

Note. Bushings can significantly interfere with normal adjustment. Therefore, it is recommended to completely remove the screws, then break off the bushing heads.

With gas analyzer

The adjustment algorithm with a gas analyzer looks like this.

Attention. As you turn the screw as the clock progresses, the speed will decrease. And vice versa, if you rotate counterclockwise, i.e., open the screw, the speed will increase.

After all adjustments have been made, it is recommended to do this. Get into the car, sharply press and release the accelerator pedal. At the same time listen to the engine running. It should not function intermittently, and when the pedal is released, it should not stall. If this is the case, the engine stops after releasing the pedal, you need to increase the flywheel speed to 800 per minute. To do this, use the speed screw on the carburetor, which must be unscrewed slightly against the clock.

Methods for eliminating floating engine speeds

When starting to find and eliminate the reasons that cause unstable operation of the engine in idle mode, you first need to check:

  1. Condition of the air filter and spark plugs. If they become critically dirty, they need to be replaced.
  2. Integrity of insulation of high-voltage wires. If damage is found, they must be replaced.

It is recommended to make sure that there is no suction at the junction of the intake manifold with the engine cylinders. To do this, with the engine running, you need to sequentially spray all joints at the joints with carburetor cleaner or other flammable liquid. If atmospheric air enters there, the car engine jerks sharply, which is why, if a damaged gasket or plug is detected, the element is replaced.

Let's consider the remaining elements of the car, the malfunction of which can affect the smooth operation of the VAZ 2114 engine in idle mode.

Solenoid valve diagnostics

Cars with engines equipped with a carburetor are equipped with idle speed solenoid valves. Devices are checked as follows:

  1. Disconnect the power cord.
  2. Start the engine to warm up.
  3. Connect the wire. If a clear click is not heard, the part must be replaced.

Attention! To fully ensure that the valve is working properly, be sure to clean the nozzle and repeat the test.

Adjusting the idle speed on a carburetor engine (with video)

Note that the main reason for the appearance of floating idle speed in engines of this type is the incorrect operation of the carburetor. The device is adjusted by rotating the fuel quality and quantity screws.

VAZ 2114 has low idle speed

What needs to be done to adjust the operation of such an important part of the car?

Idle speed control

Now it's time to turn on the power. The engine should be started. If you still cannot fix the problems, you will have to disassemble the regulator a second time. If the next attempt is unsuccessful, the driver should be advised to reflash the on-board computer.

This may be relevant for those who purchased a car on the secondary market, but reflashing is a last resort. Usually all car owners just need to disassemble the regulator and repair it.

Conclusion

Many car enthusiasts do not know the reasons for the high idle speed effect, much less how to eliminate it. So, of course, experts and car mechanics recommend contacting a car service straight away, but our man won’t stop until he tries it himself.

There are many reasons for the effect of increased speed, from faulty sensors to errors in the electronic control unit. You can also fix the problem at home, which is what owners of VAZs and other domestic cars do. But owners of foreign cars will have to contact a car service center, where repairs can amount to a considerable amount.

Good afternoon. Help with advice. In general, in the cold weather the check light came on. At first the speed just started to jump a little. Now the idle is kept at 1.5k almost all the time. And if you press the clutch at speed, it increases up to 3k. From time to time the check does not disappear for long, but the problem does not go away, you have to revise the throttle all the time so that the speed drops. Also, all this is accompanied by increased gasoline consumption. Unfortunately, there is no BC, and I consider it a waste of money to go for diagnostics; they rarely help anyone significantly.

After reading a lot of posts about this, I realized that it was necessary to sin on one of the following: IAC, DMRV, DPS or lambda probe.

But I changed the pxx recently, when the speed, on the contrary, dropped to 0.5, plus if there are problems with the pxx, the check light does not light up.

The main task of the idle speed system (mode) is to maintain engine speed at a minimum level, ensuring complete combustion of the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. The number of idle speeds on different engines may vary, the range is 700-950 rpm. Excessively low tachometer readings lead to unstable engine operation, which may stall. On the other hand, high engine speeds at idle are fraught with excessive fuel consumption and more toxic exhaust. Below we discuss the main reasons for the increased and unstable crankshaft speed at idle for a carburetor and injection engine.
