Windshield wiper mechanism - faults and do-it-yourself troubleshooting1ladakalina.ru

Hi all. Such a misfortune happened. At one point, the wipers simply stopped working. The first thought is the fuse. I'll go under the hood and the corresponding fuse will burn out. I put another one on and it immediately burns out. Another one - the same. I disconnect the contact from the motor, install a fuse, just connect the contact - it burns out. OK. Due to very strict necessity and knowing some of the peculiarities of the Russian “maybe”, I take a screwdriver and with the side of the handle I lightly tap the motor from all possible sides. I set the fuse, connect the motor - silence. I turn on the wipers and they work! That's the end of the fairy tale. And whoever fixed it is a great guy. The horseradish was there... We are not in a fairy tale.

The next day the same bullshit. And as luck would have it, we had such a rainy week. I open the hood and carry out “repairs” according to a well-established scheme. Horseradish. Okay... I'm going to work as is. And I have to tell you, in the rain and without wipers - a specific pleasure...

In the evening I decide to replace the motor because I can’t live like this any longer. But, having learned the price of 3000 rubles

, a week of waiting and looking into the family budget, I understand that
this little engine is not so bad
+))) Why bury it ahead of time?+)))

I am attempting DIY repair #1.

Although a repairman makes me like a rheumatologist from a gopnik. So that you understand, I looked at the windshield wiper motor for the first time in my life. No, I'm not blonde. I just don’t like tinkering with cars and do it extremely rarely and only in the most critical situations.

Attention. This is my first time performing this trick. There may be easier ways to remove it, but I didn't know about them.

Before you start repairing, read the article to the end!

Removal:
1.
Remove both wipers.
2.
Remove the plastic parts that surround the wipers. To do this, using a flat screwdriver, remove the rubber seal that goes through both plastic parts and is attached to the pistons. Next, the right part is lifted and the left one is taken out from under it (in the direction of travel). There is simply a piston hidden under the right part that secures the left part.

3.

Through the space between the open hood and the windshield on the driver's side we see the mechanism for attaching the motor leash with a trapezoid (metal parts that drive the wipers). Carefully remove the end of the trapezoid from the leash with your hand (it’s called a trapezoid, right?+)))).

4.

By hand, with force in one direction or another, we turn the motor driver (the metal part attached to the nut) to the vertical upward position.
5.
On the other hand, from the engine compartment, unscrew the motor itself. There are four bolts.

With the motor removed:

We analyze everything that can be understood. We watch everything and everywhere. And we put it back. Check - it works! But not for long. About a day. Why? Who knows…

I give up.

I’m going to take the motor for diagnostics to the same service center that recently installed a new generator for me.
Verdict - replacement motor. The electric motor itself is working properly, but a hole has formed on the plastic gear, into which one of the contacts falls and jams the movement of the motor. And even if you are careful, even just a little bit, there is no way to fix it.
No way. Somehow they explained everything to me in this spirit.

Having reviewed my budget again, I understand that I have nothing to lose now

, but I still have hope for a bright future.

“Why am I not Russian or what?”

I'm making another attempt to repair the motor.

Because at the moment I already know all the features of the breakdown.

As an experienced master, in 5 minutes I remove the motor and take it home.

At home, upon a detailed inspection, the words of the service technician begin to reach me. Indeed, under the plastic casing in the area of the metal contact ring, “caries” has formed in one place on the inner circle. A small hole into which the contact fell. When you figure it out, you will understand everything yourself.

Well, if you have caries, then you need to get a filling.

Plastic seal. There is still no way out.

I hope everyone at least once in their life melted some kind of plastic and dripped it onto the asphalt, the legs of their comrades and other objects?+)))

It was decided to stupidly bury the “caries” with molten plastic

and clean the area with sandpaper.

We are preparing a cleaning kit consisting of a shot glass with vodka, women's cotton pads, cotton swabs, and various tools in the form of thin screwdrivers.

1.

Remove the metal contact ring.
2.
Feel free to remove the old grease using cotton pads and napkins.

3.

We very carefully scrub off the “caries” with cotton swabs dipped in vodka. Because if you drip plastic onto an oiled part, it will not stick to the part.

4.

Gradually carefully dig up the plastic. For the material I used white plastic ties. The plastic in them is quite durable and fusible.

5.

Using sandpaper, we grind off the excess plastic deposit until a smooth surface is formed and the contact can slide unhindered.

Operating principle and purpose of the motor

The windshield wiper motor is one of the main components of the entire system. Its purpose is to ensure the movement of the brushes along the windshield and rear window (if we are talking about a hatchback or station wagon). The windshield wiper motor itself supports operation in several modes - slow, intermittent, and the fastest.

In general, the design of the wipers includes an electric wiper motor with a gearbox, a unit that returns the blades to their place, as well as levers and the brushes themselves. As a rule, a washer device also functions with the brushes, providing water supply to the glass. The windshield wiper motor itself is considered one of the most unreliable components, which fails quite often.

Main malfunctions of the mechanism and ways to eliminate them

When is windshield wiper motor repair required?

Before removing, checking the motor and replacing it, familiarize yourself with the main faults of the unit:

  1. The device does not function, the safety element does not work either, but its integrity does not work. In this case, you must first diagnose the integrity of the wiring and contact connections, and if damage is detected during the diagnosis, they must be eliminated. If everything is fine with the wiring, then you need to check the steering column brush switch; it is quite possible that it has failed. Naturally, the problem may also lie in the electric motor, for example, its contacts are burnt or the brushes are acidified; if this is the case, then it will need to be repaired or replaced. It would not be superfluous to diagnose the wiring that goes to it and the block. It is recommended to clean the safety element or replace it if cleaning does not produce results. If after performing all these steps the system still does not work, then you will need to diagnose the integrity of the winding of the so-called motor armature. If the diagnostics show that the circuit is missing, then either the armature or the entire electric motor assembly is replaced.
  2. The brushes do not work, while the safety element is working, and the fuse in the power circuit regularly fails. In this case, the levers are diagnosed - perhaps they cannot work as a result of deformation or freezing of the brushes to the windshield. It is much worse if the failure of the unit is caused by a short circuit in the armature circuit, then you will have to decide what to change specifically - the armature or the gear unit.
  3. The device does not operate in intermittent mode. As a rule, such a malfunction is caused by a failure of a relay or switch. In both cases, it is better to replace the failed mechanism.
  4. The wipers operate intermittently but do not stop. In this case, the problem, as a rule, lies in the inoperability of the relay or limit switch. If the reason is the switch, then most likely the spring plastic is not pressed to the end by the gear, and in this case it will just need to be bent (the author of the video is Igor Ivanov).

How to replace the windshield wiper drive in Lada Kalina

To the numerous “sores” of the Lada Kalina, I would also add the windshield wiper drive (windshield wiper motor). It was this problem that I recently encountered; the solution to the problem was replacing the wiper motor. I produced it, as you understand, with my own hands; what came out of it and how it was all done will be discussed in my article today.

The need to replace the windshield wiper drive arose after I noticed that the speed of movement of the wipers had decreased significantly, the plastic rods were constantly breaking, and the wipers themselves often began to travel beyond the boundaries of the cleaning area.

THERE WERE TWO OPTIONS:

  • First. Tinkering around and sorting out the gearbox means that in the end it is not a fact that after this they will work as they should.
  • Second. Replace the motor with the entire trapezoid assembly. It may be more expensive, but in this case I saved time and nerves.

I bought a windshield wiper drive assembly from Valeo. The country of origin is China, this is of course not very pleasant, but I reassured myself that, firstly, now everything is assembled in China, and secondly, as they say, “China and China are different.” Well, time will tell...

SO, NOW IN DETAILS ABOUT HOW TO REPLACE THE WIPER DRIVE FOR A LADA KALINA WITH YOUR OWN HANDS.

Replacing the windshield wiper motor on a Lada Kalina is not difficult; it took me about half an hour to do everything.

1. Remove the plastic plug and unscrew the two nuts to “13″, then the wipers along with the leads.

2. Now you need to remove the frill (decorative plastic trim), for this you will need a TORX T20 nozzle. Some bolts can be covered with plugs; those who have at least once changed the cabin filter with their own hands will know what's what.

3. Take a 10" wrench and unscrew the nut located on the right side, as well as the two fastening bolts located on the left side, which secure the trapezoids to the body.

4. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, then disconnect the connector and trapezoid along with the wiper motor.

5. Take a new trapezoid and install it in the place of further service. Assembly is carried out in reverse order. When finished, adjust the position of the wiper brushes.

REPLACING THE WIPER DRIVE FOR LADA KALINA - RESULTS:

  1. The coverage area of the wipers has become what it should be, it doesn’t rub or touch anything anywhere.
  2. The speed of movement (cleaning) is excellent.
  3. The wipers have become much more efficient.

Instructions for replacing the windshield wiper motor

If, as a result of diagnostics, you determine that the windshield wiper motor does not work, then the failed unit will need to be replaced. There is nothing difficult about this; even a beginner can cope with this task. But you need to take into account that the replacement procedure may be different for a particular vehicle. Therefore, before changing the unit, familiarize yourself with the technical features of the system and read the service manual for the car. We will describe the procedure using the example of a traditional VAZ.

How to properly change the rear or front wiper motor:

  1. First, you need to unscrew the nuts that secure the windshield wiper arms; to do this, use a wrench. After this, remove it from the installation site. If you are having trouble dismantling at this stage, try using a penetrating lubricant.
  2. Next, the wiper lever drives are removed; to do this, the nuts securing them must be unscrewed. Having done this, you can dismantle the plastic bushings, as well as the rubber seals.
  3. After performing these steps, you need to disconnect the connector with the wires in the harness and lift one part of the seal through the hole formed in the partition of the engine compartment.
  4. Now you can remove the wiper itself. Subsequently, the washer is removed from it, as well as the spring fastening. After completing these steps, you will need to disconnect the pull rod. Next, all you have to do is unscrew the three screws that secure the electric motor and remove it. The unit is repaired and put back or replaced with a new one.

Video “Detailed instructions for repairing an electric motor at home”

A detailed guide on the topic of repairing the wiper motor is given in the video below (the author of the video is the Auto Electrician HF channel).

The windshield cleaning system on your car should be serviced periodically. This is necessary for its proper operation, because the system can fail at the most inopportune moment. To prevent this from happening, you need to follow a few simple recommendations. Let's look at how the wiper motor is serviced and repaired, what are the weak points of the system and what to pay attention to first.

Procedure for replacing windshield wiper rubbers

Inexperienced and, in some cases, negligent drivers often make the stupid mistake of throwing out virtually new wipers when they no longer clean the glass as effectively. In fact, the problem that has arisen can be solved in just ten minutes by simply replacing the rubber bands. When choosing new parts, give preference to rubber structures. According to experts, their advantages are as follows:

  • clean glass silently;
  • function properly at a fairly wide temperature range;
  • Features a durable graphite coating;
  • There is a wide range of different brush sizes available;
  • have a reasonable price.

The purchase has been made and it’s time to start replacing the part. The procedure is absolutely not complicated. Most men and even women can cope with it. Here is an approximate sequence of your actions:

  1. We dismantle the wipers and move them to a warm place;
  2. Using a screwdriver, remove the plugs located at the edges of the windshield wipers;
  3. squeeze out the so-called burr that secures the brush;
  4. we remove the old rubber bands, install new ones in their place and return the burr to its original position;
  5. The final stage is putting on the plugs and installing the windshield wipers on the car.

When installation is complete, make sure that the windshield wipers are firmly in place. In this case, the brushes should fit tightly to the surface of the windshield. Weakly fixed rubber bands and loose attachment of the blades are the reasons why windshield wiper blades may not clean the surface of the windshield well.

What and how to clean the wipers on your car?

As a result of prolonged use, windshield wiper blades may become stiffer and not adhere so tightly to the glass. Of course, in such a situation, you shouldn’t count on the wipers to clean the glass efficiently. Do you think there is only one way out - a complete replacement of the structure? We hasten to please you. The problem can be solved by thoroughly cleaning the rubber bands. We'll tell you how to clean your car's wipers at home:

  • remove the rubber bands, dip them in gasoline for a few minutes, and then rinse thoroughly with soapy water;
  • after an “invigorating shower”, lubricate the elastic bands with a special silicone lubricant, which is sold as a spray or gel in a tube;
  • Another cleaning method is to moisten a piece of cloth with white spirit solvent and gently wipe the wiper blades with it;
  • A very simple and cheap way is to use a hot bath for the rubber bands, which helps destroy deposits and contaminants from their surface.

Having tested at least one of the above methods, you will certainly see a difference in the operation of the mechanism before and after the cleaning procedure. For example, wipers who previously stubbornly did not clean the middle of the glass will correct themselves and will delight you with a perfectly clean surface.

If you notice any problems with the operation of the windshield wipers, do not wait to visit a service station. You need to take care of the health of your car no less than your own. Only in this case will your iron friend serve you faithfully for the maximum possible number of years.

Road safety comes first

Whatever electronic security systems the car is equipped with, it is necessary to monitor it all. As practice shows, the least attention is paid to wipers and elements of this system.

Many people ignore the symptoms of failure of the same motor, wiper blade or injectors. As long as it works, it's good. That is why the system remains maintenance-free from purchase to sale of the car. However, the wiper motor has its own specific resource, which increases significantly if the unit is periodically serviced.

Debugg

The correct operation of the wipers is ensured by a spring located in the leash of each device. With frequent use, they can weaken, so the windshield wipers do not adhere well to the glass, and therefore the quality of their work decreases. Such a malfunction cannot be noticed with the naked eye, since the brushes work well, but stains still remain.

You can often eliminate such defects yourself. In particular, if the wipers begin to work worse because oil has appeared on the glass, then it is not difficult to get rid of it. The way out of this situation is as follows: just wash the glass using detergent. It can be purchased at any auto store or gas station. It is also possible to degrease the elastic components of windshield wipers with white spirit.

After using it, it is necessary to apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the working area of the elastic band.

Drivers leave their cars with their windshield wipers up. This is correct, since they cannot always be adjacent to the windshield - this will help avoid deformation of the spring. But you need to do it correctly: the distance between the glass and the brush should be about 10 mm. To do this, you can place matchboxes under them.

Replacing the spring is also a good option. Some vehicle owners prefer to shorten it, but difficulties may arise:

  • For the manufacture of a tensile element, steel is used, which is processed under the influence of various temperature conditions. Therefore, it is not easy to shorten it;
  • This approach will not provide proper pressing, which can lead to rapid wear.

You can also press down the wipers. For this:

  • use the key to dismantle the system;
  • place it tightly in a vice;
  • using a screwdriver, press out the spring and install the washer on it;
  • install the spring back.

To check the correctness of all actions, you must turn on the cleaning system upon completion. The brushes should fit tightly to the glass.

In winter, frame window wipers become covered with snow and ice, which leads to loss of flexibility and poor fit. To solve the problem, just warm up the brushes and clean each element of the device with your fingers. The wipers should be in the warm air blowing area. The use of a defrosting agent is permitted.

Do not turn on windshield wipers that are frozen to the glass or tear them off. This will cause them to break.

Windshield wiper motor repair

In most cases, this unit is maintenance-free, that is, not dismountable. But this does not stop experienced motorists. This is especially true in cases where there is no extra money for a new motor. To do this, take a metal cloth. It is necessary to cut the motor at the transition point (step). We separate it into two parts and see the armature, winding and core.

All these parts are usually not in the best condition and usually show signs of corrosion. It is necessary to thoroughly clean the motor elements. Fine-grained sandpaper or another similar product is suitable for this. For example, the VAZ wiper motor has such a weak point as the oil seal. Over time, it cracks and leaks liquid into the body, causing the parts to become covered with dirt and begin to rust. This may damage the device.

How to turn off the rear wiper on a Prior?

A characteristic feature of hatchback and station wagon bodies is the poor protection of the rear window from road dirt, which is the responsibility of the rear wiper. The vast majority of automakers use such a rational solution as a rear window wiper. The developers of AvtoVAZ are not lagging behind in this matter, they also install rear wipers on the specified body modifications of the popular small car Lada Kalina station wagon.

The principle of operation of the rear wiper

To enable the windshield wiper to function, the manufacturer equipped this mechanism with an electric drive, which is protected by a traditional fuse. The designated components have a direct impact on the performance of the wipers. If, for example, the fuse link burns out, the brush will no longer be able to work and the rear wiper, which has become unusable, will need to be replaced. And here it is important to know how to remove it.

What to look for when choosing?

It is no secret that the level of visibility to the rear depends on the efficiency of the brush, which is especially important when maneuvering in cramped conditions and in bad weather. When choosing, you should lean toward high-quality branded products that will not subsequently emit an annoying squeak when rubbing against the glass and do not have to think about how to remove and replace the wiper. You should also inspect the integrity of the working element of the brush, which initially should not have cracks or breaks. An important role is played by the force with which the rear wiper is pressed to the surface of the glass, as well as the material from which the product is made.

Types of wipers on Lada Kalina

Today the market can offer its buyer two types of rear brushes for the Lada Kalina station wagon. These are products that have a frame and their analogues that do not have such a component element, also called frameless.

Advantages and weaknesses of wipers

Each type of brush has certain advantages, and at the same time, both product options are not without disadvantages. Frameless versions have great durability, because for their production manufacturers use high-quality rubber and weather-resistant plastic. Over time, although the rear brush wears out, this process is not intensive.

Pump for Granta 8 valves

Lada Granta operating instructions

In operation, frameless brushes for the Lada Kalina station wagon do not emit unpleasant squeaks and do not greatly rub the surface of the rear window. Also, the products adequately withstand the onslaught of temperature changes.

Now the disadvantages. There is only one point here - it is overpriced.

In addition to the metal base, frame brushes have plastic structural components that are integrated into the frame itself. Cleaners are low-cost and widely distributed in the retail chain.

Among the disadvantages of frame options, one can highlight their small resource. After a couple of years of use, the working elements of such a brush become unusable and require inevitable replacement. A constant companion to the work of the wiper is an annoying squeak.

Rear wiper dimensions

The brushes used to clean the rear window of the Lada Kalina station wagon or hatchback have a length that varies from 360 mm (14″) to 406 mm (16″). In such a situation, it is possible to experiment with the length and choose the most effective option that will clean the required area of glass. Some owners resort to the option of installing a rear brush, similar to that used on the front passenger side. By the way, its length is also 406 mm. Next, we will consider the question of how to change the wiper.

Replacing the rear wiper on Kalina

So, how to change it yourself? The replacement process is very simple.

  1. Withdrawal. To do this, remove the holder and remove the brush. Here you will need to pull the cleaner itself and at the same time press the latch.
  2. Installation. This manipulation is much easier than dismantling the wiper on a LADA Kalina station wagon. We insert the brush into the mounting location, and then press it with manual force, thus achieving fixation in the holder, which will be indicated by a characteristic click. Replacement is complete. Now you know how to change the rear wiper on a car.

Possible malfunctions and how to eliminate them?

Intermittent operation of the rear wiper mechanism is a very common situation faced by owners of the Lada Kalina station wagon. The solution is simple - you need to replace the fuse. It is located in the mounting block, which in turn is located under the panel to the left of the steering column. Sometimes a replacement requires a relay, which can be found in the same mounting module.

When the rear windshield wiper completely refuses to function after activating the button, then diagnostics of the electric drive of the LADA Kalina station wagon will be needed. The wiring goes to the electric motor itself. Here you need to make sure that the contact at the ground terminal is reliable. In most cases, the problem is eliminated by simply cleaning the contacts from oxides. If such manipulations do not give the desired result, disassembling the mechanism and probably replacing the motor will be required. Sometimes the culprit for the lack of purifier functionality is the steering column switch.

Let's sum it up

The article provides basic recommendations on how to choose the right one, as well as how to remove and install a rear windshield wiper for LADA Kalina station wagon. Situations with partial or complete loss of functionality of the mechanism, and what to do if these problems arise, are also discussed.

We recommend choosing a high-quality rear windshield wiper, which will not only effectively clean the surface of the stern glass, but will also last much longer.

Rubber seals

Gaskets and seals are made of rubber. Over time, they lose their positive properties. Due to temperature changes, they become tanned and crack; this also happens due to an aggressive environment. For this simple reason, seals need to be changed periodically.

If you do not do this, it is quite possible that the device will fail. The next time you service the glass cleaning system, it is advisable to change the seals and rubber gaskets.

Don't forget that the wiper blades themselves are also rubber and should also be checked regularly. Often replacement is performed once a year. If the brushes are made of silicone and of high quality, then they can last a couple of years, but hardly more. This is due, again, to temperature changes.

Replacing the windshield wiper drive for Lada Kalina. We change the wiper motor ourselves

Replacing the wiper motor

If you don’t have the time or desire to do independent repairs, then you can simply purchase a new motor and install it in place of the old one. But first of all, you need to make sure that it is faulty. Often the problem is in the wiring, a fuse has burned out or the contacts have oxidized. All this can lead to the fact that the motor will not show signs of life.

We check the wiring where it connects to the motor. You can also use a multimeter. If voltage is supplied to the contacts, then the problem is in the motor itself. If not, then first check the condition of the fuse, and then look for an open circuit.

All these procedures will not take much time, but there should be a result in the end. For such work, a service station can charge several thousand rubles, or even more. Therefore, it makes sense to do this yourself. If the problem is still in the motor, then it needs to be changed or repaired.

Replacing the trapezoid and windshield wiper motor on Lada Kalina

Removing the windshield wiper mechanism completely is quite an easy job, for this we need 10 by 13 heads, a ratchet, a knob, a 10 and 13 ring spanner, you can also use an open-end wrench.

First of all, you need to get down to work on removing the wiper arms and plastic linings; detailed information on removing the plastic linings can be read here: Replacing the cabin filter on a Lada Kalina.

If you have sorted out the removal of the plastic covers, we proceed to the process of unscrewing the trapezoid mounting bolts. First, unscrew it on the left, as shown in the picture.

Then by class=”aligncenter” width=”600″ height=”338″[/img] After that, unscrew the nut on the right side; for this it’s better to arm yourself with an open-end wrench.

Now there is nothing holding the trapeze, you need to slightly tilt it forward.

We take it out of the seat.

The final step when removing is to disconnect the power plug of the motor. To do this, you just need to bend the plug lock and remove the plug. First you need to disconnect it from the body; the plug is attached to a clip.

The motor is connected to the trapezoid by 3 bolts and one nut. So we unscrew the 3 bolts using a 10mm socket.

After this, unscrew the nut securing the trapezoid and the motor shaft.

You can remove the motor, since there are no more fasteners.

If there is a need, we replace the trapezoid or motor and assemble it in the reverse order.

Malfunctions of the steering column switch

This unit often fails on cars with high mileage. It is usually maintained throughout the entire life of the vehicle. Over time, the contacts burn out, which becomes the main reason for the malfunction of the steering column switch.

You can either repair it yourself or simply replace it with a new one. The second option is naturally expensive. Depending on the make of the car, the switch can cost from 2 to 20 thousand rubles. In this case, it is quite logical to do repairs, especially since there is nothing complicated about it.

We dismantle the switch and carry out a visual inspection for defects. If there are burnt contacts, then take a soldering iron and correct the situation. Almost always, the steering column switch can be repaired, the only exceptions being cases of board failure, although there are craftsmen here too.

The wipers stopped working - we find out and eliminate the cause

Poor quality work of any component and element of your car is not just discomfort during the trip, but also a certain irritating factor. Every time you have to deal with the fact that some piece of technology does not work in a decent way and does not offer a high enough quality of functioning. This is especially difficult for idealists, for whom everything should work at the highest level and without problems. One of the most annoying problems is the failure of the wipers. If the windshield wipers stop working, wave randomly, or stop when the control knob is turned off right in the middle of the glass, you should think about possible problems. Here we should highlight several main components that can break. Trapezoid, wiper fuse, intermittent wiper relay, power handle and other elements.

You can find the cause yourself, or also seek help from specialized forums where similar problems are discussed. Often on forums you will find the same symptoms of a problem and you can easily repair your car. If the wipers stop working, you will have to do something quickly. Otherwise, you will have to experience significant difficulties when traveling in rainy or simply wet weather. In winter, the inability to clean the glass from sticking dirt and constantly sticking snow will simply not allow you to drive normally. You will have to stop every two minutes and clean the windshield. Let's look at the most common problems with wipers in modern cars.

Trapezoid - the mechanism for direct operation of the wipers

One of the most complex mechanisms in the wiper system kit is the trapezoid. Today, no car manufacturer has such a reliable wiper drive mechanism to guarantee long-term operation of the device. Banal jamming of brushes or excessive emphasis on the glass, improper activation of the wipers, freezing to the glass in winter - all these reasons can be detrimental to the trapezoid. Among the possibilities for restoring this mechanism, it is worth highlighting only a few possible steps:

  • purchasing a new trapezoid is often the best step for domestic cars, in which the wiper mechanism costs about 1000-1500 rubles;
  • for foreign cars, purchasing a new trapezoid will cost exorbitant amounts of money, so in this case, repairs should be made and broken parts restored;
  • Often the bushings and tips in trapezoids fail, which are often plastic and are terribly resistant to frost, so they can simply be replaced;
  • if it is not easy to find a repair kit for a trapezoid for your car, you can try installing bushings and other parts from other cars of a similar class;
  • Direct replacement of the trapezoid is necessary if even repair work does not eliminate the problem, or after repair the mechanism begins to tap during operation.

Any sounds coming from the trapezoid may be a harbinger of its death. This is exactly the sign that indicates a possible failure of the entire device. However, you should not change the trapeze immediately after unpleasant sounds occur. Before replacing, you can wait until the device completely fails or try to eliminate the sound by tightening the components of the trapezoid using standard tools. It's not difficult and can be done right in your garage.

There is no intermittent wiper mode - looking for a relay

Often, along with the lack of intermittent mode, problems arise with returning the windshield wiper blade to its original position. In this case, the culprit of the situation is a burnt-out relay. At the same time, the mode of continuous strokes of the windshield wiper blade is present, as well as the mode of accelerated cleaning of the glass. These options for operating the windshield wiper are designed to bypass the relay; they are implemented directly from the handle for switching on the wiper operating modes. When a relay fails, you simply need to replace it by following this procedure:

  • searching for the installation location of the relay in your car - again, forums, the car’s operating instructions or recommendations from specialists who repair your car will help;
  • Next, the non-working relay should be removed from the installation location, the device number should be rewritten so as not to make a mistake when choosing a new electrical device to replace it;
  • go to the store or order on the Internet an original production relay with the same catalog number to ensure normal operation of the wiper on the car;
  • Having received the device in your hands, take a good look at it, make sure that this is exactly the element that was originally installed in your car at the factory;
  • turn off the ignition, be sure to check that the wiper switch is in the “off” position and insert the relay into the slot from which the non-working device was removed;
  • turn on the ignition and check the quality of the wipers, taking into account the new installed electrical part.

Let's sum it up

The price of a windshield wiper motor varies significantly depending on the car. Usually it costs several thousand rubles for a VAZ and more expensive for foreign cars. If only the pump is changed, then everything is simpler. When the entire assembly with the electric motor is replaced, the cost of such pleasure is not small.

In any case, it makes sense to audit the system, find faulty parts and try to repair them; if that doesn’t work, replace them with new ones. It is worth highlighting the following main malfunctions of the glass cleaning system according to the main features:

  • The wipers do not work at all speeds - most likely the fuses have blown or their contacts have oxidized;
  • the system operates only in intermittent mode - the relay may fail;
  • the gearbox works, but the brushes do not move - the gear teeth are licked or the nut securing the crank on the gear is not tightened.

As for other breakdowns, everything is individual. In one case, the problem may lie in a faulty nozzle, in another - in the pump. A thorough inspection from small to large will in any case lead you to the unit that has failed.

For example, the rear wiper motor breaks down extremely rarely, since it is not used so intensively. Modern cars are equipped with one pump for both the windshield and rear window. This simplifies the task somewhat, because the fewer parts in the assembly, the more reliable and simpler it is.

Lada Kalina Hatchback -=First car=- › Logbook › The wipers do not work. Problem with gear motor

Hi all! I haven't been on Drive2 for a long time. I confess, it’s my fault (Several changes have been made to the machine in a few months =) I will write about everything in more detail in separate blog articles.

So, a serious problem suddenly overtook me. I was driving along the highway, it was raining, I turn on the wipers, they do one cycle and freeze forever... With an astonished look, I try to revive the wipers, but they are silent. I pull over to the side of the road, the first thing I do is check the transmission - everything is ok. I open the hood, visually the rack and the motor are in perfect order... thoughtfully tugging at the contacts near the engine, I took out a cloth, wiped the glass and drove quietly to my destination. I’ll tell you honestly, friends, driving in the rain with non-working windshield wipers is an extreme thing))) God forbid, someone should experience this for themselves.

When I arrived home, the first thing I did was contact an electrician. He took the electric motor, simply disassembled it, reassembled it and, connecting it to power, saw that it was alive. I happily put it in its rightful place and went about my business. The next day it rains again. I turn on the wipers, they work very slowly, do 2 cycles and die again. This time I already knew roughly what the problem was, so I didn’t stop, and having already practiced extreme driving without wipers in the rain, I went to an electrician. He was again “glad” to see me with a gear motor in my hands. He took it apart again, replaced all the brushes, cleaned the contacts and the engine came to life again. When the electrician returned this engine to me, he said the following phrase: “If it dies again, it’s better to buy a new one.” Well, the man looked at nothing - after 2 weeks the motor died again. It was decided to replace this piece of iron.

I arrive at the local Phaeton auto parts store. I’m buying a gear motor for Kalina for 1,900 rubles, the toad, of course, is choking, but there’s nothing to do, you can’t drive like that in the rain. At the delivery of goods they give you a motor without a box, documents and even with a small scratch on the lid. When I asked where the equipment was, the manager replied that the supplier brought them in this form and offered a bag.
