How to find out the engine temperature on the panel in the grant

Old dashboard

This instrument panel was installed before June 15, 2014.

Find the engine temperature indicator here?

There is no engine temperature indicator on the old instrument panel. There is only an overheating warning light. On my previous cars, which did not have a temperature gauge, there were at least two warning lights: “cold engine” and “engine overheating”.

On the Grant, as planned by AvtoVAZ engineers, the engine should not be warmed up, and you can immediately start driving. Interesting savings. A whole battle broke out on our website in the comments about this in the article: Is it necessary to warm up the engine before driving?

Car manufacturers allow the car engine not to warm up, citing global standards to prevent environmental pollution and save gasoline.

Ways to solve this problem

There are several ways to solve this problem. The simplest of them is to just hammer and drive like that. Most people do just that. You can flash the instrument panel, the result will be like this.

But in this car there is a hypothetical problem of the engine not heating up to operating temperatures, although AvtoVAZ management does not consider operating temperatures below 80 degrees a problem.

More on this a little later, when my diagnostic scanner arrives from China!

Installing a separate engine temperature indicator

The easiest and cheapest way is to install a separate temperature indicator instead of the standard free button plug.

Temperature gauge installed in place of the standard plug next to the cigarette lighter

Installing such a digital indicator will not take much time.

Make it a rule to always turn off the power to your vehicle when doing any electrical work!

  1. You will need to remove the panel trim (if you don't have air conditioning, the ideal location would be to the side of the heated rear window button).
  2. Next, disconnect the ground from the battery.

Disconnect the ground from the battery

Connect the indicator to the diagnostic connector

Checking the operation of the indicator with the car running

This indicator is sold in most car stores, the cost does not exceed 600 rubles.

Viewing the temperature using a smartphone (tablet)

This method will require you to purchase a diagnostic cable that works via bluetooth. You will also need an Android device that supports bluetooth connection.

  1. Remove the diagnostic connector.
  2. Connect the diagnostic cable there.
  3. Install the “Torque” program or a similar one on your cell phone.
  4. Launch the program on your phone, start the engine and try to establish communication with the adapter.
  5. Once the connection is established, you can view the data that is transmitted from the sensors to the ECU.

To what temperature should the engine be warmed up?

In operating manuals, there is a widespread statement that the car needs to be warmed up not at idle, but while driving. There is also an opinion that high-quality motor oils effectively protect rubbing parts in almost any conditions and at any temperature.

It should be noted that such recommendations are aimed more at caring for the environment, which is given great attention in developed countries. It turns out that automakers are forced to sacrifice engine life for the sake of environmental friendliness.

From a technical point of view, pre-warming the engine at idle before driving is necessary. The gearbox, regardless of the type of transmission, as well as other components of the vehicle also need to be warmed up. As for warming up the engine in winter, the main reasons are noted below:

  • Any motor oil thickens to one degree or another at subzero temperatures. For this reason, rubbing pairs are not lubricated so well with cold oil and are subject to increased wear. As the engine heats up, motor oils will correspond to the declared viscosity values and will most effectively demonstrate their protective properties. The optimal solution is to increase the speed and load on the internal combustion engine only after preheating.
  • The second reason that the engine needs to be warmed up is the gaps between parts. On a cold engine, the clearances are increased and return to normal after the engine reaches operating temperature and the heated parts expand.
  • Additionally, let us draw your attention to the fact that the presence of an injector does not mean absolute stability of a cold engine when driving. The “cold” speed may fluctuate or freeze, increased vibrations appear, excessive fuel consumption occurs, the sharpness of the response to pressing the gas pedal decreases, etc.
  • The last argument for the need to warm up the engine is safety, since visibility when driving a car with the windshield and side windows covered in frost is limited.

Taking into account the above, we will answer the question to what temperature the engine should be heated in winter at idle before driving, depending on the types of internal combustion engines and fuel consumed: carburetor and injection gasoline units, diesel engines, as well as cars with installed gas equipment.

Engine warm-up temperature and time

If we talk about the warm season, then a couple of minutes of idling will be enough for a fuel-injected car or diesel engine. Carburetor engines need to be warmed up for 7-8 minutes. Then you can start driving in lower gears and low revs (about 2000 for a gasoline car and 1200 for a diesel vehicle). In winter the situation changes.

Gasoline engines

If your engine has a carburetor, then it needs to be warmed up for at least 15 minutes. In severe frost this time may be increased. The main task is to warm up until the engine runs stably when you press the gas pedal and increase the fuel supply. Carburetor engines must be heated to 40 degrees or more before driving, guided by a special mark on the temperature scale.

The minimum warm-up time for an injection gasoline engine can be considered to be about 5 minutes. During warm-up, you need to monitor the tachometer, since after starting a cold internal combustion engine, the idle speed is usually overestimated by the ECU. As the temperature rises, the tachometer needle will drop to 750-900 rpm, after which you can start driving.

It must be added that in severe frosts it is not enough to rely only on the speed of the crankshaft. It is optimal to wait until the temperature gauge needle begins to rise 1-2mm from the bottom mark. This means that the temperature of the coolant, which moves along the cooling jacket, has reached an average of about 40-45 degrees Celsius.

Warming up the engine with HBO

The presence of gas equipment up to the 4th generation, where the choice of fuel type is carried out manually, obliges drivers to adhere to certain rules. It is recommended to start the engine and its subsequent warming up strictly on gasoline.

In winter, it is advisable to use gasoline until the internal combustion engine reaches operating temperatures, after which it switches to gas. If there are no severe frosts, then the minimum temperature for warming up the engine before switching to gas is about 50 degrees Celsius. Ignoring these rules can quickly damage the LPG gearbox, and running a cold engine on gas has a negative impact on the service life of the power plant.

We also recommend reading the article about what HBO is. From this article you will learn about the types and generations of gas equipment, as well as the operating features and design differences of various solutions.

How to warm up a diesel

Winter warming up of a diesel engine at idle for 5-10 minutes is also necessary, although the temperature of engines of this type rises more slowly compared to their gasoline counterparts.

Please note that you do not need to wait for the temperature gauge to start rising before starting your trip. After warming up at idle, a diesel car is usually warmed up while driving.

Additionally, you need to take into account that in winter there is a risk of diesel fuel freezing in the fuel system. A common situation is the normal start of the engine, which then stalls while moving after a few tens or hundreds of meters.

In this case, the diesel engine starts using the remaining diesel fuel, while fresh fuel is not supplied due to clogging of the fuel filter with paraffin, etc. Taking into account this feature, the right solution in winter would be to warm up the diesel engine for about 10 minutes, which will ensure normal fluidity and a stable supply of diesel fuel to the engine without the risk of stalling at a busy intersection.

Lada Granta is an excellent option for a budget sedan. The car is front-wheel drive, it has an attractive appearance and quite decent equipment. The cost of the vehicle is low, so it is in demand on the market. Despite modern technical characteristics, a new engine, an enhanced safety system and a rich set of equipment, the car has drawbacks. You need to know and take them into account when purchasing a Lada Granta model.

As practice shows, any car has its weak points. Lada Granta was no exception. This brand of car is not ideal, and after a series of studies, its problems were identified, which ultimately spoil the whole picture and cause frequent breakdowns. Therefore, they require special attention from the vehicle owner.

Weaknesses of the Lada Granta:

  • Salon;
  • Headlights;
  • Electronics;
  • Thermostat;
  • Body;
  • Chassis;
  • Transmission;
  • Brake pads.

Now in more detail

Salon

The interior is clearly the weakest side of the car. Already from the first minutes of using the car, you can notice a number of its shortcomings. The first is associated with the handle responsible for adjusting the seat. It is quite fragile and breaks quickly. In addition, the gear lever boot also leaves much to be desired. The material is of low quality and cracks quickly. During operation, it constantly crawls out from under the knob.

Almost immediately, the light that controls the operation of the airbags begins to blink. It indicates their malfunction. Soon the power windows fail. They begin to jam and make an unpleasant sound when the glass is lowered.

The car has air conditioning, but the quality of its operation is quite poor. He doesn't cope well with the task. During the day, in the heat, his work is almost invisible. Especially if the car is stationary.

Lights, electronics, thermostat

The weak point is the rear lights. They sweat quickly and are poorly secured. There are large gaps on the lamp side, where dust and dirt quickly accumulate. It will be necessary to carry out measures to remove it.

As for electronics, it became a drawback on the first cars of this model. Quite often the ECU floods the wiring harness. In addition, generator malfunctions occur. The problem lies with its bearings and belt.

In principle, the cooling system has no complaints. Problems appear only with the thermostat, and not in all models. This problem is mainly typical for cars manufactured before 2012.

Body

The above disadvantages are minor and relatively harmless. If we talk about the body, then this is a serious disadvantage of the vehicle. The paint on it wears off quickly. As a result, the body is left without a protective layer and begins to rust. This indicates that the vehicle was installed incorrectly. At the same time, the plastic bumpers are not painted at all, which many buyers do not really like.

Chassis, gearbox, brake pads

The car's chassis became its important drawback. Over time, the front struts begin to make an unpleasant sound. It manifests itself in the form of a knocking sound after 6 thousand kilometers. Over time, the traction control brackets located on the front suspension can burst.

The appearance of a whine in the gearbox indicates a malfunction of the gearbox. This problem often worries car owners. In addition, when cold, this part has a tight movement. It does not tolerate low temperatures well. In winter, there is a high probability of the handle freezing. This problem can be solved by simply changing the gearbox oil to synthetic.

The brake pads that the Lada Granta is equipped with are of low quality. Over time, they make an unpleasant creak and squeal. In addition, brake discs wear out quickly.

The handbrake cable is not very well secured in the car. Experts advise starting to operate the vehicle with extreme caution. It will take time to get used to this feature.

Main disadvantages of LADA Granta

The Lada Granta car has pros and cons. The latter are quite important, as they often cause vehicle failure. The main disadvantages of the Lada Grant are presented as:

  1. Rear drum brake;
  2. Weak motor;
  3. Lack of rear armrests and ceiling handles;
  4. One airbag, which is installed for the driver;
  5. Minimum set of options;
  6. Lack of engine temperature sensor;
  7. Creaking body;
  8. Incorrect operation of the climate system.

Conclusion.

The list of Lada Granta's shortcomings is quite long, but many of them can be avoided. To do this, you need to treat the vehicle with care and carry out timely maintenance. Replacing a worn-out part with an analog one will improve the quality of the car’s performance and reduce the likelihood of it breaking down again.

New instrument panel

New instrument panel combination (from June 16, 2014)

If your car was manufactured after June 15, then the engine temperature should be displayed in the on-board computer. If it is not there, then you need to reflash the instrument panel.

We found ways to save money. And putting an additional indication is a collective farm!

Where to buy a button?

Which button? If on-board instead of a button, then in almost any auto store that specializes in domestic cars!

You are probably talking about STATE1? So, my experience shows that STAT1 never shows the temperature accurately, sometimes the error ranges up to 13 degrees in the direction of underestimation!

Let us remind you that on the website you can find out what the real fuel consumption of the Lada Grant and Lada Kalina 2 should be.

I installed the additional indicator at a car dealership for 2500 rubles, purchasing it on June 9, 2014. Eh, I would have purchased the shipment after June 15, if only I had a computer on board)

I installed the indicator in the cabin for 2500 rubles on June 9, 2014, a necessary thing

Damn you are needed)) they write the red price is 600. ) And why are you lost) stop by and see the guys, they will stick you a flatbed for 35) I think they won’t refuse such a necessary person!)

Thermostat from grants to Priora

Hello everyone! Even though I’ve already replaced and redone a lot of things in the car in a year and a half, I’m writing here for the first time. The other day I decided to bother installing a thermostat from Granta. Reviews are often contradictory: some are overjoyed, others are dissatisfied. After three days of use, I ranked myself in the first group.

Engine temperature indicator and sensor on Lada Grant

The driver will not receive readings from the engine temperature sensor on a special screen in the Lada Granta car of later modifications. On outdated modifications it is also difficult to find engine heating readings. On such cars there is simply a light that indicates whether the car engine is overheating or not.

The first instrument panel can be found on vehicles that were produced before the end of the first half of 2014. The second one is still being installed. Let's look at how temperature is determined on different sensors and how they are displayed on the screen with instruments.

Knock sensor

The main tasks of this element include the determination of high-frequency oscillations resulting from fuel combustion in the cylinder block.

Based on the DD signal, the control system selects the most suitable ignition timing angle, thanks to which efficient and complete combustion of fuel is achieved in the cylinder block of the car engine. In addition, the ignition timing is also regulated, which is important when using fuel with different octane numbers. This element is located directly on the cylinder block (more precisely, between the second and third cylinders).

Displaying temperature data on the instrument panel

AvtoVAZ manufacturers answered the question of experienced mechanics: why there are no heating degrees on the instrument panels of vehicles from the Russian manufacturer. They claim that this was done because it was unnecessary to display these numbers. Because the engine is configured in such a way that the temperature in it is always maintained at an optimal temperature. There were no cases of overheating.

Attention! AvtoVAZ manufacturers allow car owners not to warm up the car. They refer to European environmental standards. Allegedly, by not warming up the engine, the car owner does not destroy nature and saves fuel.

However, experienced mechanics and car owners managed to display information on the dashboard screen. Some even buy special devices to determine engine temperature.

Now we’ll find out how to check the engine temperature on a Lada Granta car.

On ordinary Russian-made cars, although there is no engine temperature scale, in top trim levels, or as they are also called “Lux”, this scale remains. It is called the coolant or antifreeze temperature scale.

On other machines, only places for installing additional devices for determining this data are provided. Now, you need to find out whether the ECU firmware will show the temperature if the car owner installs additional devices.

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Press the daily mileage reset button and turn the ignition key to the “Start” position.
  3. Now notice that all the indicators turn on and the arrows on the panel move. This means that the system has entered service mode.
  4. You need to release the reset key.
  5. Press it again.
  6. The numbers that appear on the scale indicate the firmware version.

Let's see if we can flash the equipment so that it shows the engine temperature.

For Grant Standard:

  • 015 – not possible due to the old modification of the motherboard;
  • 029 – 040 – not possible due to the old modification of the board;
  • 053, 060, 076, 087 - you will have to work with a soldering tool. Experienced mechanics reflash the device to the new 2190-20 092 For 076.

For Grant Norm:

  • 090, 091 – it is allowed to change the air heating sensor on the street, you cannot install DTOZH;
  • 092-095 – it is allowed to change the air heating sensor, you can also change the TOZh sensor;
  • 032, 038, 042 – it is possible to change the outside air heating sensor, you cannot install DTOZH.

For Grant Lux:

  • 046 – allowed;
  • 047 – allowed;
  • 007 – it is allowed to replace the system with 046.

For Kalina Norma:

For Kalina Lux:

Now you will need to flash the ECU with a new program. They do this as follows:

  1. Pull out the panel and connect the programmer device to it.
  2. Upload new firmware.
  3. Turn on the ignition and poke the buttons with your finger, watching how the icons switch on the screen.
  4. Switch until the screen displays the motor temperature.

This completes the display of motor heating on the toolbar screen.

Sveta

As for the light sensor, it is installed in the same housing with the rain regulator. Its purpose is to activate and deactivate lighting based on the current state.

For example, if it gets dark outside or you enter a garage or poorly lit tunnel, the device should automatically turn on the headlights along with the side lights.

The controller itself is not repairable, so if it fails, the only option is to replace it.

Old dashboard

On vehicle models before 2014, it will not be possible to view the temperature on the dashboard in any case. And, if you pay attention only to the overheating light, then when it lights up, it may be too late to save the engine.

In this case, installing a special engine temperature indicator will help. However, you first need to understand what the on-board computer values on the panel mean in order to understand the problem.

On-board computer values on the panel

The manufacturer says that you can drive with an engine that is not warmed up. Although this is fraught with major overhauls not only for the engine, but also for the automatic transmission. If you warm up the engine, then in hot regions you may not understand when the engine warms up to 80 degrees, and the temperature jumps above the set point. And when the engine starts to boil, it will be too late to wave your hands.

So how do you know that the heating levels in the engine have reached their climax? In this case, experienced mechanics suggest installing a special engine temperature indicator.

New instrument panel

On a Lada Granta with a new instrument panel, the temperature indicator should already be built-in. However, not all cars have it. Therefore, many car owners have to reflash the panel.

Since overheating alarms are no longer installed, the temperature should be displayed on the instrument panel when requested by the car owner. If it is not there, then perhaps the manufacturer installed old firmware and therefore the car owner cannot find the engine temperature on the instrument panel screen.

The instrument panel also displays other values of vehicle parts. For example, gasoline consumption, amount of gasoline, errors in operation of the automatic transmission or engine.

Purpose

The process of ignition of the fuel mixture in the cylinders of the internal combustion engine is accompanied by an increase in temperature to 20000C. If you do not maintain operating temperature conditions, the cylinder block with all its parts will simply collapse. The purpose of the engine cooling system is precisely to maintain the thermal operating conditions of the engine at a safe level.

The Grant engine temperature sensor is a meter that tells the ECU about the degree of heating of the antifreeze. The electronic unit, in turn, analyzing data from all sensors, including DTOZH, brings all internal combustion engine systems to a balanced optimal operating mode.

DTOZH:

What temperature sensors are installed on the Lada Granta, where are they located and the price

Now let's see what devices are installed on Russian cars and where they can be found.

  • Lada Granta engine coolant temperature sensor is installed in the thermostat cover - 300 rubles;
  • detonation device at the front of the cylinder block wall. Between the second and third;
  • the device for determining the location of the crankshaft is found in a special opening in the tide of the oil pump cover;
  • device for determining phases or camshaft - 2000 rubles;
  • air and pressure measuring device;
  • lambda probe - 1000 rubles;
  • device for calculating mass air flow - 1800 rubles;
  • device for determining speed - 310 rubles;
  • oil pressure.

Prices are for used and new devices. You need to find out more about the cost in special auto stores.

Attention! Experienced mechanics do not recommend buying equipment on open markets. It is best to make purchases in specialized stores or service centers.

Catalog items

The serial number for the engine temperature gauge of a vehicle from a domestic manufacturer is 2190-94. It is not being repaired. Experienced mechanics advise checking this device before replacing it. At the service center, the procedure is carried out at special stands. But you can check it at home.

Self-replacement of the temperature sensor

The check is done as follows:

  1. Immerse the device in hot water.
  2. Then they measure the resistance.
  3. The values may vary on different devices. You need to read the manual and find out what the optimal resistance of the device is.

If it does not reach the specified values, then the sensor needs to be replaced.

The replacement procedure is carried out as follows:

  1. Buy a thermostat. A kit is sold that includes an indicator, a housing for the indicator, a thermostat and fasteners.
  2. Remove the air filter and disconnect the battery.
  3. The car owner will see a pipe that goes to the thermostat. It must be cut off on both sides carefully.
  4. Replace with a new one and tighten the hose clamps.

At this point, the process of changing the thermostat is considered complete. Now all that remains is to observe the engine temperature through the instrument panel. At any slightest hesitation, you must contact the service center. Since it is possible that a faulty thermostat could play a cruel joke on you and display the temperature incorrectly. And at this time the engine overheated enormously.

Speed sensor

The DS is intended to measure the speed of a vehicle, with subsequent transmission of the received data to the ECU. The speed sensor is a small part; it is located in the upper part of the clutch housing, near the front wheel on the right. Its malfunction is usually directly related to a breakdown of the speedometer. However, the sensors installed on Grants are distinguished by fairly high quality and durability.

By the way, initially three types of speed sensors were installed on Grants: VAZ-2170 PEGAS, 2190 AVAR Russia and 21700-3843010-02.

More details about the speed sensor on Grants.

If the DS malfunctions, the electric power steering most often stops functioning, and at the same time the instrument panel begins to display error P-0501. As a rule, the steering wheel fails precisely because the car detects a breakdown of the speed sensor; the DS itself may show zero speed.

If the sensor fails, the following symptoms of failure are noted:

  • the speedometer needle stops at the zero mark; often the speedometer operates only periodically;
  • when the engine is running idle, interruptions are observed;
  • the speedometer readings diverge from the actual speed of movement;
  • fuel consumption standards are increasing;
  • craving worsens.

These parts have their own markings, their price ranges from 300 to 600 rubles.
