VAZ-2108 is AvtoVAZ’s first front-wheel drive car. Years of production: 1984-2004. The car was also produced in Ukraine from 2004 to 2014. The “Eight” belongs to the II group of small class cars and was produced in a single hatchback body. It is the base model in the Lada Sputnik family. The successor to the VAZ-2108 in 2004 was the VAZ-2113. At different times, the car was produced with gasoline engines of 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 liters (54-82 hp). A small-scale hatchback with a VAZ-415 rotary engine producing 140 hp was also available. With. The car was delivered to Europe not only as a hatchback, but also as a convertible.
Engine tuning VAZ 21083 carburetor
Let's consider the potential for upgrading the VAZ 21083 8V engine without replacing the cylinder head with a 16 valve (The 123 16V engine and its modifications are mentioned in a separate article). The easiest way to boost the VAZ 21083 engine is to replace the camshaft with an OKB Dinamika 108 or popular among the people, Nuzhdin 10.93, install a split gear , adjust the phases. The output is about 80 hp. To this we add modifications to the cylinder head and intake manifold, valves, milling of the cylinder head, and we get 85-90 hp. To further increase power, it is recommended to increase the volume of the 21083 engine to 1.6 liters by installing a crankshaft with a stroke of 74.8 mm; taking into account the above modifications, we will get a full 95 hp. When using valves of increased diameter, lightweight valve plates, and a modified carburetor, we have 105-110 hp.
Tuning methods
Several types of tuning are used:
- “chipping” – installation of an electronic analogue of a mechanical regulator, power increases by a maximum of 15%;
- replacing the air filter - options with reduced resistance are used, an exhaust manifold with the same length of pipes and a 52 mm throttle.
Tuning 21083
The manufacturer does not recommend turbocharging the 21083 engine, as this significantly affects the service life for the worse.
Thus, modification 21083 was not the best internal combustion engine option for VAZ cars. However, a noticeable advantage is the safety of the valves in the event of a timing belt break, an improved Ozone carburetor and an increase in power by 6 hp. With.
Malfunctions and repairs of the VAZ 21083 engine
The 83rd engine is the progenitor of all modern LADA engines; 16 valve engines 2112, 124, 126 (Priora engine), 127, 114, 116, 194 (Kalina engines) were created on its basis. This engine was replaced by its injection version 2111. VAZ 2108 1.5 liter engine. carburetor in-line 4-cylinder with an overhead camshaft, timing belt 21083 has a belt drive. The service life of the 21083 motor, according to the manufacturer’s data, is 125 thousand km; in practice, the motors run more than 200 thousand km. The main differences between the 21083 engine and the 2108 are the pistons enlarged to 82 mm, the diameters of the intake valves in the cylinder head increased from 35 mm to 37 mm, the head gasket with increased diameters of the holes for the cylinders and the carburetor with different calibration data. A feature of the 83 engine is that if the timing belt breaks, the valve does not bend. But the unit is not without its drawbacks: valve adjustment is still required, parts of the cooling system wear out, the oil filter constantly needs to be changed, oil leaks through the valve cover seal, fuel pump and distributor sensor, unreliability of Solex carburetors, especially EPHH, breaking off of the fastenings of the exhaust exhaust pipe due to the use of steel nuts instead of brass. Among the noticeable and common malfunctions: knocking in engine 21083 - it’s time to go adjust the valves and it’s better not to tighten it. The VAZ 21083 engine is running rough, we need to measure the compression to rule out problems with the valves, check the valve clearances. Everything is fine? Clean the carburetor, didn't help again? Look for an electrical problem.
Disadvantages and advantages
The main advantage is that the 21083 engine does not bend the valve when the timing belt breaks. In addition, the engine incorporates design solutions that provide a number of advantages:
- no oil starvation at startup - a special coating is used to preserve oil on the surface of the pistons;
- free rotation of the pin in the connecting rod bosses - overhauls are performed less frequently;
- massive upper connecting rod head – the life of the crankshaft increases, major repairs are cheaper;
- modification of the pump - the cooling system lasts longer.
Piston group kit
Despite the fact that the cylinders have a maximum diameter, it is possible to tune the internal combustion engine with your own hands in other ways. The disadvantages are:
- it is impossible to install pulleys of additional attachments on the internal combustion engine shaft;
- torque at high speeds is low;
- high thermal loads are dangerous due to the pressing of the head plane, crushing of the bosses and cracks in the exhaust manifold.
The second modification of the 21081 engine was more fortunate, since its volume, on the contrary, was reduced, and the development was carried out more carefully for export abroad.

TUNING Potential – 180 hp. Without loss of resource - up to 90 hp.
Compressor for 2108 1.5
An alternative method of obtaining such power is to install a compressor. To implement the project, it is advisable to switch to an injector, this will ensure smoother and more stable operation, but you can install a compressor on a carburetor VAZ 2108 and blow into the carburetor; a normal stock piston keeps 0.5 bar without problems. The well-known video clearly explains everything that is required to successfully implement an injector project.
The increase in engine power 21083 without using a turbine can be continued up to 150 hp. and higher, but the engine life is sharply reduced, the car will become inconvenient for everyday city use. A good step and a starting point that will significantly increase efficiency and potential would be the installation of a 16-valve cylinder head. And with a typical urban set: an enlarged throttle body (54 mm, 56 mm), a receiver and an exhaust on a 51 mm pipe, we get a return of 105-110 hp. without loss of resource.

Increased oil durability
Tip: Noise or knocking in the engine indicates a faulty unit. Therefore, you should not fill in expensive oil until the problems are completely eliminated.
- Leaving the machine idle for a long time also requires changing the lubricant. This is explained by the formation of condensate inside the engine, which, after mixing with oil, will worsen its properties, and therefore increase the wear of parts rubbing against each other.
- A sharp start of the car from a standstill or strong acceleration reduces the durability of the unit.
- Oil that is not appropriate for the season can cause a rapid loss of its properties. Therefore, in winter you need to fill in “winter” oil, and vice versa in summer.
- The use of low-quality fuel leads to the formation of its residues in the lubricating fluid, contaminating the oil.
Change of oil
All you need to acquire useful new knowledge is perseverance, attention and a few minutes of free time. Initially, we suggest that you theoretically understand what actions should be performed, and only then move on to the practical consolidation of the acquired skills. You can read our recommendations, ready-made instructions, or you can carefully study the manufacturer’s manual.
Which oil is better to choose
The manufacturer guides us that the motor fluid must comply with the international API quality standard: SG, SH, SJ. Also, the numbers on the container indicate the temperature conditions at which the technical product is planned to be used. In order not to learn a lot of textual information, not to load your memory with unnecessary information, you can either write down a specific series on your cheat sheet, or ask a consultant what type of carburetor oil you should give preference to. It is also useful to understand what type of oil is best to fill in the VAZ-21099 (injector or carburetor):
- synthetic;
- semi-synthetic;
- mineral.
You will have to shell out a tidy sum if you decide to purchase synthetic oil, but don’t skimp, buy it because synthetics have the best characteristics.
Oil change features
It doesn’t matter whether the VAZ-21099 has a carburetor or an injector, the algorithm of actions will be the same. So, if you are interested in how to change the oil, we recommend that you first ride your “iron horse”. Such a trip is needed to warm up the engine, and subsequently the oil fluid. If you don't have time to ride, then at least just let the engine run for at least five minutes. The next step is to drain the old grease. Drive your car into the pit, unscrew the drain plug on the engine crankcase, and immediately replace the container.
A viscous and very dark liquid will begin to flow into it. Be careful not only not to get dirty, but also to avoid burns; do not forget that you have preheated the oil. All used oil will drain for about thirty minutes. Don't rush, but wait until the flow stops. After this, unscrew the filter, it will give in to you even if you do not use tools. Only if the filter has become rusty, use some skill, you can even make a small hole in it, you will no longer need it anyway.
Now take a new filter, coat its rubber gasket with a small amount of oil to prevent it from sticking to the threads.

What is required for replacement
You need to prepare for the oil change procedure. First you need to figure out whether the time has come to carry out such a technical manipulation. To do this, it doesn’t hurt to check the oil volume in the VAZ-21099 engine. If a lack of motor fluid is detected, the procedure should be carried out immediately. How many liters of oil you will have to pour into the VAZ-21099 engine is difficult to answer in the same way for everyone. You must learn to determine yourself, using the dipstick, how much engine fluid you need to pour in.
If you clearly understand that a replacement needs to be carried out, then prepare your workplace by placing all the necessary tools at arm’s length:
- a container where you can collect used oil;
- gloves to protect your hands;
- a soft cloth to wipe off any remaining oil from the engine surface;
- new oil filter;
- new oil;
- open-end wrench.
How to change engine oil
Before carrying out work, you need to purchase high-quality oil, a filter for cleaning it, air and fuel filters (see Replacing VAZ filters - how to do it?), a puller to make it easier to remove the oil filter, a wrench for removing the drain plug, and a screwdriver. Drain the liquid when the car engine is warm.
- In order to make it easier to change the oil, the VAZ 21099 engine should be in a convenient position for the car owner to access. It is best to carry out work on an inspection hole or overpass. It is possible to use a jack to raise the front of the car, having first securely secured the rear wheels with supports.
- A container of at least four liters is placed under the drain hole.
Tip: Fluid drainage improves when the cap is removed from the oil filler neck.
- The drain plug on the crankcase is unscrewed.
- The oil is drained into a container.
- If it becomes necessary to flush the engine, the plug is replaced.
- Using a special wrench, the oil filter is unscrewed. If you don't have a key, you can use a screwdriver.
- It is better to lubricate the O-ring of the new oil filter with engine oil.
- Installation is done by hand without using any tools, as shown in the photo.
Tip: To prevent the formation of an air lock, it is advisable to fill it halfway with oil before installing a new filter.
- If the oil filler cap was not previously removed, unscrew it by turning it counterclockwise at an angle of ninety degrees.
- Slowly, allowing the entire engine space to be filled with oil, new lubricant is poured in.
- Using a dipstick, the level is periodically checked, which should not be below the minimum mark.
- The engine starts and runs until the oil pressure light goes out. After about ten minutes, the oil level is checked again.
This is how the oil in the VAZ 21099 engine is changed. The video clearly shows all the nuances of the work.
Type of engine lubricant
The oil base and additives are components of motor oil. The mineral is based on petroleum, while the synthetic is obtained through chemical synthesis. When the two bases are mixed in the right proportions, they form a semi-synthetic oil. To increase the service life of the engine, additives are added to ensure stabilization of the properties and characteristics of the fluid and normal operation of the engine. Parameters defining the oil group:
- Chemical composition. According to this parameter, oil can be mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic.
- Viscosity. Classified according to SAE.
- The presence of certain additives and quality. Classification according to API and ACEA.
- Manufacturing approval. Different manufacturers define their own parameters.
Instructions
- We warm up the engine to 45-50 degrees. Warm oil has better fluidity and will drain better from the engine during a complete replacement. Our task is to remove as much as possible the old dirty and used fluid that no longer has useful properties from the engine and fill it with new one. If a lot of old dirty oil remains in the crankcase, it will be swept away with the new one and will worsen its beneficial properties. Warm up the engine for 5-7 minutes before starting, this will be sufficient.
- For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into an inspection hole (the best option). Also, some models may have engine crankcase “protection” installed.
- This is what a regular VAZ 21099 engine looks like. We find the filler cap on it and open it to better drain the used oil.
- Place a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
- Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a regular “bolt” under an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed using a four- or hexagon. Don't forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake you up warm, but you need to be careful.
- We wait about 10-15 minutes until the waste flows into a basin or cut-off plastic canister. In the photo, the drainage is done into a cut-off plastic canister. The owner decided to carry out the maintenance without protective gloves, which could have cost him in the end, but everything worked out.
- Optional but very effective! This Ninety-Nine owner praises Mannol as a good flushing agent. With it, dirty waste becomes thinner and drains better.
- Changing the sedum filter. In some models, it is not the filter itself or the filter element (usually yellow) that is changed. Impregnating the filter with new oil before installation is a mandatory procedure. Lack of oil in the new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. Overall this is not a good thing. Also remember to lubricate the rubber O-ring before installation.
- Fill in new oil. Having made sure that the drain plug is screwed in and a new oil filter is installed, we can begin to fill in new oil using the dipstick as a guide. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, some oil will leave and the level will drop. The most common way to fill the engine with oil. In this case it is 10W-40.
- In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change; be careful during the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level using the dipstick after the first start.
Changing engine oil for VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099
Welcome! Motor oil - it is found in almost any car, because it lubricates system parts, thereby reducing friction and increasing engine life. But like any other substance, oil also requires periodic replacement, but unfortunately, not all people know how to change engine oil, and therefore, especially for such people, we wrote an interesting article in which everything is described in detail.
Note! To change the oil, you will need to stock up on: A basic set of wrenches, and you may also need a special wrench for unscrewing the oil filter, or instead of a special wrench you can use a thick screwdriver. Also, to change the oil, take with you a clean rag so you can wipe your hands from dirt and a funnel for more convenient pouring oil into the car engine! (You can see what a special wrench for unscrewing the oil filter looks like at the very bottom of the article, in the “For Beginners!” section)
When should you change the engine oil?
- If you follow the manufacturer’s advice, then the engine oil needs to be changed every “10,000-15,000 thousand km”, or after “1-2 years” from the moment the oil is filled into the engine. (Whichever comes first)
Note! The frequency of replacement is also affected by: The condition of the engine, the brand of oil that was poured into the system, as well as the quality of the gasoline you fill the car with! (You can learn more about oil change intervals from the article entitled: “Oil change intervals and its selection”)
Reasons for replacement
There are conditions that must be adhered to so that the lubricant present in the engine system fulfills its protective functions and turns into the cause of failure of the power unit.
There are several main points when an oil change should be carried out.
Cause
Explanation
Recommended mileage exceeded
Each part has its own service life, during which the spare part uses up its existing resource. There is no point in continuing to use oil that should have been drained long ago. Otherwise, it may cause serious problems with the engine.
For winter and summer, it is recommended to fill in the appropriate type of lubricant. This is due to the degree of viscosity, outside temperature, characteristics of the intensity and cooling of the engine in winter and summer.
Changing the brand of lubricant
If you want to switch to a new brand of lubricant, the old oil must be completely removed from the system. Under no circumstances should you mix different oils, even by brand.
If the car is regularly operated under high load conditions, oil changes are carried out more often than recommended intervals.
This is what old oil looks like
Regardless of the recommended replacement intervals, always pay attention to the current condition of the engine lubrication. Various factors can cause the oil to wear out prematurely, so it will have to be replaced earlier. Plus, additionally eliminate the reasons why the lubricant did not serve its intended purpose.
For summer, a more viscous lubricant is used than for winter. During prolonged operation in the engine, it loses its properties, additives, and chips from the engine's rubbing parts begin to adversely affect its condition. Over time, if the lubricant is not changed, this may lead to the need for a major overhaul of the power unit.
How to change the engine oil on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?
Draining: 1) First, place the car on a flat surface.
2) Then unscrew and remove the oil filler cap from the car engine.
3) Then unscrew the drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the engine.
Note! Before you begin to unscrew the drain plug. Place an empty container under it in order to drain all the used oil from the engine into it!
4) After all the used oil has drained from the engine, screw the drain plug back on.
Changing engine oil and filters VAZ 2109
5) Next, try to unscrew the oil filter by hand.
Note! If the oil filter cannot be unscrewed by hand, then unscrew it using a special wrench!
Filling: 1) First fill the new oil filter with new engine oil.
Note! Pour new engine oil into a new oil filter, you only need to fill one third of its volume!
2) Then lubricate the O-ring of the new oil filter with new engine oil.
3) And then screw the new oil filter back on.
4) Next, pour new engine oil into the engine oil filler neck.
Note! To avoid spilling engine oil on the engine, use a funnel!
5) Next, wait about 2-3 minutes until the oil drains into the engine crankcase, and then remove the oil level dipstick from the engine.
Note! New engine oil must be poured into the engine up to about on the dipstick!
Important! Remember one thing, the oil in a car should always be changed only with a warm engine after a trip, because heated oil drains from the engine much better than cold oil, and also with a heated engine, there is a much greater likelihood that oil residues will also come off the walls of the pan!
For newbies! Question: What does the special wrench look like for unscrewing the oil filter? Answer:
Additional video clip: You can also watch the details of changing the engine oil in the video clip below, in which everything is clearly described and shown.
Replacement
Now let's get down to work. There is nothing complicated here, so even a beginner can cope with the task.
- Prepare a container in advance where you will drain the used lubricant from the engine. A regular 5 liter plastic bottle will do just fine. Plus, you'll need a funnel so you don't miss it and spill oil on the floor.
- Warm up the engine. When the engine is hot, the oil becomes less viscous, which allows it to more efficiently and quickly exit the system when drained.
- Place the car on a flat surface and turn on the handbrake.
- Proceed to remove old grease. To do this, remove the engine protection, if any.
- Place a drain container under the crankcase pan and unscrew the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench.
- Don't forget, the oil is hot, so unscrew it carefully to avoid burns.
- After removing the drain plug, wait about 10-15 minutes until all the oil is drained into the prepared container.
- In parallel with changing the engine oil, it is recommended to change the oil filter. This can be done while the grease is draining. The filter is unscrewed with a special key or screwdriver, breaking through the housing. A new oil purifier is installed in its place.
- When the lubricant has completely drained, return the plug to its place.
- Pour some oil into the new filter. This must be done in several approaches so that the element has time to absorb the substance. Filling to about half the filter level is enough.
- Be sure to oil the filter rubber seal and wipe the seat of the filter device dry with a dry rag. Place the filter in place and tighten it by hand.
- Next, you will need to either simply add fresh oil or flush the system. Nowadays you can find a variety of cleaning products in any auto parts store. Take one of them and follow the instructions. After completing the flushing, you can fill in new lubricant.
- To fill, open the lid on the motor and gradually begin pouring liquid through the funnel.
- Fill in about 3 liters and wait until the lubricant is distributed throughout the system.
- Gradually add another 500 milliliters of liquid. At the same time, monitor the amount of oil in the crankcase using a dipstick. If you have not flushed the system, you will probably have to fill in a little less than 3.5 liters. This is due to the imperfection of the drainage system.
- Make sure that the dipstick shows the mark between the maximum and minimum lubrication levels.
- Screw on the cap, start the engine and let it idle for a while. This will allow the liquid to fill the filter and channels.
- When you start the engine, the red oil pressure indicator light will come on. After 10 seconds it will go out. If the lamp does not go out, most likely you have not screwed the filter on properly. Check it out.
- Stop the engine, take the dipstick again and check the actual level of lubricant in the crankcase. If required, add a little liquid to the optimum level.
- When completing work, be sure to check the system for signs of oil leaks. If the protection has been removed, return it to its place.

Such simple and consistent steps will help you change the engine oil yourself without unnecessary hassle. You already know how much to fill and what rules to follow.
Engine oil for VAZ 2108 engine
VAZ-2108 is AvtoVAZ’s first front-wheel drive car. Years of production: 1984-2004. The car was also produced in Ukraine from 2004 to 2014. The “Eight” belongs to the II group of small class cars and was produced in a single hatchback body. It is the base model in the LADA Sputnik family. First generation 2108, 1984-2004
German Porsche engineers took part in the development of the VAZ-2108, a revolutionary car for AvtoVAZ. Among the imported components that were then produced in the USSR, the G8 received front disc brakes and a vacuum brake booster from Lucas, a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism and gearbox synchronizers from Zahnradfabrik, as well as a clutch (Automotiv Prodax), front suspension struts (Way-Assauto), hinges (Hardy Spicer), carburetor (Solex), rear suspension beam (Volkswagen) and tires 165(175)/70R13 (Michelin). The technological partner was Fiat, which helped AvtoVAZ establish internal production of all components and assemblies. The result was the first Soviet car, which was not inferior to its foreign counterparts either in exterior and interior design or in driving performance.
Characteristics of ICE 2108
German designers built a small amount of power into the engine, sufficient for a three-door hatchback weighing less than 1 ton. The timing drive again became a belt drive, but the shortcomings of the previous generation 2105 were taken into account. The existing cooling system was ideal for a small engine; replacing it was not practical in terms of cost.

Original
VAZ-2108 owners fill mainly with semi-synthetic oil. In addition, you can still opt for semi-synthetic or pure synthetic - depending on the condition of the engine. Viscosity indicators, which are selected depending on temperature conditions, are also important. For example, for year-round operation, a 10W-40, 10W-30 or 5W-40 all-season oil is recommended. In the winter season, it is better to fill in 0W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-30, and in the summer you can opt for 20W-40 or 25W-50.

Oil change period in the VAZ 2108 engine
Owners of old VAZ-2108 cars change their engine oil once a year or every 10 thousand km, depending on how quickly the lubricant deteriorates. As a rule, its shelf life is influenced by various factors, including natural and road conditions, driving style and the degree of load on the car. Failure to comply with traffic regulations, as well as sudden starts and braking in city traffic jams can cause overheating of the internal combustion engine and deterioration of the fluid quality. As a result, there is a high probability of a decrease in engine power, a decrease in the oil level and the appearance of wear products in the form of sediment. Based on this, we can conclude that in harsh conditions it is better to change the oil every 6-7 thousand km.

Owners of VAZ-2108 cars prefer inexpensive motor oils from domestic brands Lukoil, Rosneft, G-Energy and Gazpromneft. When choosing a suitable product, it is necessary to take into account the API approval, which is selected depending on the year of manufacture of the car, as well as the type of internal combustion engine. For example, for a gasoline VAZ-2108 produced in 1984. All-season mineral oil with parameters 15W-20 and API-SG is suitable. For cars of the 2004 model year, semi-synthetic API-SJ is recommended. Below are the best options for analogue motor oils for the VAZ-2108.
- Mobil Super 10W-40
- Elf Evolution 700 STI 10W-40
- Shell Helix HX7 5W-40, 10W-40
- Lukoil Genesis 5W-40
Which oil to choose
There are three types of oil, let's look at them in more detail.
- Synthetic is the most modern oil today. In general, this lubricant is recommended for foreign cars, but it is also quite suitable for the VAZ-2109. This is the most fluid and liquid oil, resistant to low temperatures and freezing. It is important to take into account the fact that such a liquid costs a little more than other oils.
- Mineral is the cheapest product recommended for high mileage. Since the VAZ-2109 is a relatively outdated car, such oil will be sufficient for it. But on the other hand, mineral liquid is extremely susceptible to low temperatures and can quickly freeze. As a result, startup problems may occur. Based on this, we can conclude that it is better to fill in mineral oil with high mileage, and only in warm and not too cold weather.
- Semi-synthetic oil - represents seven synthetic and mineral oils. This product can be considered the best option for the VAZ-2109. It is definitely better than mineral water, but at the same time much worse than pure synthetics. Semi-synthetics will also not be the best option at low temperatures. And yet, given the lack of money for normal oil, VAZ-2109 owners will have enough of this oil.
How much oil is in the VAZ-2110 engine
VAZ-2110 is a budget city car with a well-studied design. Quite reliable and affordable to maintain. According to statistics, almost all owners of such cars prefer to do their own repairs; fortunately, you can save a lot of money by repairing a VAZ-2110. Firstly, there are a large number of cheap spare parts for this machine on the market. Secondly, this is, of course, the simplicity of the design. And yet, beginners and even experienced motorists should start with simple procedures - for example, changing the engine oil. Naturally, before this task, it is important to know about many nuances - for example, what oil to choose and how much to fill. Let's look at all this in more detail using the VAZ-2110 as an example.
Changing the oil of VAZ 21099
VAZ 21099 (Sputnik) - popularly known as “Ninety Nine”. A sedan model of Soviet and later Russian and Ukrainian production. The Ninety-Ninth was produced at AvtoVAZ(a) facilities until 2004. In Ukraine, it came off the assembly line at ZAZ. For export, the VAZ 21099 had the names Lada Sagona, Lada Samara Saloon, Lada Forma and Lada Diva.
Like many other domestic cars, this model has several modifications. VAZ 210993 had an engine capacity of 1.3 liters and VAZ 210990 had a 1.5 liter engine. In 1997, the AvtoVAZ plant began producing the VAZ 2115, it was a restyled (redesigned) model of the VAZ 21099. As a result, the Ninety-ninth ceased to be sold in 2011, and in its place they began to produce the restyled VAZ 2115 model.
How much oil to fill
Before changing the fluid, you need to know exactly how much new oil is needed. Unfortunately, a clear answer to this question does not take into account various nuances - for example, that some old fluid may remain in the engine, which is why it will not be possible to fill the full volume of new oil. In this case, you will have to inject liquid until it begins to pour out of the oil filler hole. The officially established oil volume for the VAZ-2110 is in the range of 3.2-3.5 liters. To fill in so much liquid, accordingly, you need to completely clean the engine of dirt deposits and metal shavings. You can check the oil level using the dipstick, which has Max and Min marks. If the fluid print is below the Min mark, then you will have to add a little oil. In any case, when purchasing oil, you need a canister with a volume of at least 4 liters. The remaining fluid can be added during further operation of the car.
A little about oil
Before you begin the replacement procedure, you need to find out what and in what quantity should be filled.
In VAZ 2109 cars, usually 3 to 3.5 liters of lubricant are poured into the engine. At the same time, it is recommended to purchase a 4-liter container, so that as you use it you have the opportunity to top up the lubricant used.
Periodically check with a dipstick what level the lubricant is. Optimally, a trace of oil remains on the dipstick between the maximum and minimum marks. Golden mean. It’s not worth filling above the maximum mark, just like driving with underfilled lubricant.
When to change the oil
In harsh conditions, engine oil should be changed more often than recommended by Renault. For example, if the manufacturer recommends replacement once every 50 thousand km, then in practice the regulations will have to be reduced to 10 thousand km. This will be better for the engine components, because it is never possible to predict exactly when the oil will lose all its beneficial properties. The fact is that if the liquid loses its properties, it is no longer able to cool the internal combustion engine parts well, and thereby prevent them from overheating. As a result, engine components will sooner or later fail, and the owner may notice this only at the very last moment - for example, when a major overhaul of the internal combustion engine is required.
What determines the frequency of oil changes?
As stated above, motor oil can quickly lose its properties due to unfavorable conditions, as well as aggressive driving style. So, let’s highlight the following difficult operating conditions:
- regular driving in the city, traffic jams, and frequent idling of the engine
- low temperature conditions under which the load on motor components increases
- frequent off-road driving, in the steppe and desert, in dusty conditions, and where there is a lot of sand
- leaving the car idle for a long time, which leads to condensation that gets into the engine oil. This interferes with the beneficial properties of the oil.
Now let’s highlight the main signs of low-quality oil:
- The liquid has turned dark in color and smells burnt.
- There are problems in shifting gears, speeds are switched on with a delay
- Increased fuel consumption
- Decrease in engine power, the engine is not able to develop high speeds
How to choose oil
Three types of motor oil are suitable for the VAZ-2110 - synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral. It is preferable to fill in synthetics when the car is new and in excellent condition. With age, it is recommended to use semi-synthetics, and then gradually switch to the cheapest oil - mineral. But if the car is still in good condition even with high mileage, then you can continue to fill it with synthetic. After all, synthetics are the highest quality and most fluid oil, which is replaced much less frequently than the other two types of oil. You should also pay attention to the viscosity characteristics - for example, viscosity parameters 10W-40 are suitable for the VAZ-2110. We must admit that this is the most optimal option for the model under consideration.
Among the most famous manufacturers of motor oils are the following: Lukoil, Rosneft, Shell, Mobile, Castrol and others.
Drain the oil from the box
First, before changing the oil, you need to drain the used lubricating fluid. If you do this in the summer, there will be no problems, but if you plan the replacement for the winter or other cool time, then you need to warm up the lubricant inside the box in advance. Make a short trip so that the oil becomes quite watery and combines normally into the previously prepared container.
If you have a hole in your garage or have access to a lift, the oiling process will not cause inconvenience, as is the case with a jack. You don’t have to lie under the car with your back on the ground, placing a basin or bucket.
Take the key 17, go under the bottom and tear the filler plug a little to allow air to get inside. Then place a container under it and unscrew the bolt by hand. Approximately 3 liters of oil should spill out, if previously the volume of oil in the VAZ 2109 box was at the level.

Checking the level and adding oil to the gearbox
If you purchased a vehicle second-hand and not at a car dealership, be sure to immediately replace the TM and do not be fooled by the former owner’s assurances. He may specifically convince you of this so as not to reduce the cost of the car. You run the risk of driving on old oil, putting your transmission at serious risk. Also, after purchasing a car and subsequently periodically check the oil level. Even a slight deficiency can cause the box to fail.
Checking the TM level is also easy if you follow all the rules we have listed. First of all, find a place where you can install the car in a horizontal position. Now wait about ten minutes if you just arrived in it. This is necessary so that the engine cools down a little and the oil drains from the gears. Now turn your gaze to the battery; it is next to it that the dipstick is located to check the level. On it you will find two marks indicating the minimum and maximum amount of oil fluid that the manufacturer recommends filling. If during the check you find a shortage of TM, be sure to add it to the gearbox.

It often happens that the oil poured without a dipstick is not enough. This procedure is often resorted to by car owners who prefer to carry out all actions hastily. Unfortunately, such haste often provokes undesirable consequences. It is for this reason that we recommend periodically checking the oil level and adding a small amount so that the upper oil level reaches or approaches it.
How much oil should be poured into the box of a VAZ 2109?
Noise in the VAZ 2109 gearbox when driving may occur due to a low oil level in it. Therefore, first, check its level in the gearbox. If necessary, replace it. But how often do you change the oil in the VAZ 2109 gearbox? So, for VA,Z, an oil change should be done every 5 years. In terms of mileage, it is enough for 70 thousand kilometers. Drain the oil through a special drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the box. So now you know how long it takes to change the oil in a VAZ 2109 gearbox, which is not unimportant!
Important: the oil in the gearbox can remain unchanged for quite a long time.
How much oil to pour into the VAZ 2109 box:
- 3.0 l with a 4-speed gearbox;
- 3.3 l if the gearbox has 5 steps.
To store oil, it would be a good idea to purchase a 4-liter canister. It is convenient and quite practical. It is advisable to keep it in the garage and, if necessary, add oil to the box.
The gearbox is designed to increase traction force with its subsequent transfer to the drive wheels of the car. This device is considered to be the most stable and “long-lived” in a car. Its malfunction can be easily eliminated and they occur in the gearbox much less frequently than in other parts of the car.

- Funnel;
- Socket wrench 17;
- Bucket for draining;
- A special filling syringe, if there is no dipstick;
- A rag to wipe the dipstick and hands.
How to fill oil into a VAZ 2109 box without a dipstick:
- In the VAZ 2109, the oil filling hole is located on the right side of the box body.
- You need to unscrew the plug and add oil using a syringe. Focus on the bottom edge of the hole where the oil is poured.
- Using a syringe, pour oil into the box until it reaches the desired level.
This is how old oil is replaced with new oil in a VAZ 2109 gearbox. This procedure for changing oil in a VAZ 2109 gearbox does not require special skills and knowledge. Good luck!

Choosing oil
The operation of the gearbox depends on the properties and suitability of the gear oil used. An incorrect choice of lubricant can lead to vehicle breakdown or reduce the service life of parts or the entire assembly. For this reason, you need to pay special attention to the choice of oil. It is better to stick to one of the options recommended by the automaker, because such oils meet all the requirements of a particular car and its parts. The automaker recommends using one of 3 options when changing the oil in a VAZ 2109 gearbox:
All of these are Russian brands, and if you are willing to pay more for gearbox lubricant, choose any option that meets the characteristics of GL-3 or GL-4. The main thing is to take oil from proven places so as not to get a fake. You can read more about choosing oil for the VAZ 2109 in a separate article.
Repair VAZ 2108 2109 21099
The gearbox oil is changed every 75,000 km or after 5 years of operation. There may also be unscheduled replacements caused by oil leakage from the gearbox due to leaking seals. In general, when driving a VAZ 2108 2109 21099, you should keep in mind that this car does not have metal protection for the engine crankcase and gearbox housing. Therefore, if you run over a stone, a curb, a stump, in general, any obstacle that rises 20 centimeters above the road surface and hit it with the gearbox, then you are guaranteed to have it replaced.
The fact is that the gearbox housing is cast iron, and it cracks under mechanical shock. And oil escapes through the cracks formed. A broken gearbox cannot be repaired; it will only be used for spare parts. Therefore, be careful when driving in the forest and in fields with tall grass. VAZ 2108 2109 21099 vehicles use serviced and unserviced gearboxes. The serviced gearbox is equipped with a dipstick to monitor the oil level in it. The non-serviceable one has only drain and fill holes. Accordingly, it is very problematic to control the oil level in it. Usually they fill the oil to the very top, and to control it, run the right front wheel onto a brick. When the right wheel is on a brick, the oil level in the box on the side of the filler plug becomes slightly higher. You unscrew the plug a little - if oil starts to flow, then its level is fine. There is another way to control the oil level in a non-serviceable VAZ 2108 2109 21099 gearbox, but more on that a little later. So, you have a need to change the oil in the box. And again, as in the case of motor oil, we are faced with the question: what kind of oil to fill in? According to the car's operating instructions, it is necessary to fill in 80w-95 transmission oils, however, the same instructions stipulate that it is allowed to fill the gearbox with engine oil. When pouring engine oil into a VAZ 2108 2109 21099 gearbox, there are two advantages: 1) Engine oil is cheaper than transmission oil 2) Engine oil in cold winters is less viscous (it is easier to change gears in a cold car). Therefore, again, considering that, for the most part, the VAZ 2109 is a budget car, filling with engine oil is preferable. So, first you need to drain the old oil from the gearbox. If you change the oil in the summer, then everything is fine. If it’s winter, it’s better to drive the car a couple of kilometers before changing it so that the oil is thinner. It is necessary to prepare a container where you will drain the old oil. If you have an overpass or a hole in the garage, then the process of draining the oil will be simple. If you need to lie under the car on the ground, then you need to find a low bucket or basin to place under the transmission drain hole.
We take the key 17 and crawl under the car, first unscrew the filler hole (to ensure air access), then place a container under the drain hole and unscrew the drain plug. About three liters of oil should spill out; if less spills out, it means you were driving with a poorly lubricated gearbox. When the oil has completely stopped draining, or flows in a thin stream for a long time, screw the drain plug into place. Now you need to fill the gearbox of your VAZ 2109 with new oil. The manufacturer recommends doing this through the filler hole. Of course, in a VAZ 2109 with a serviceable gearbox, this is easy to do: take out the dipstick, insert a funnel into this hole, and fill in the oil. However, in gearboxes without a dipstick (not serviced), this is very difficult to do: the funnel is not inserted into this hole. If you build something like a hose with a cut bottle screwed to it, then the filling process will be very long (although this is also a good option).
Therefore, the recommendation is as follows: fill oil through the speedometer drive hole using a bulb. A pear is an ordinary large enema, the larger the capacity, the better. Unscrew the nut securing the speedometer drive and remove it.
We leave the drive hanging on the side (the main thing is not to smear it, but we ourselves suck new oil from the container into the bulb, then we bring the bulb to the hole of the speedometer drive and squeeze it into the box. We do this until the oil flows from the filler hole left open on the side of the box gears. If it leaks, we tighten the side filler hole. Through the hole in the speedometer drive you can clearly see what the oil level is now in the box. This can be used for periodic monitoring of the oil level in the box - remove the speedometer drive, look at the level, put the speedometer drive back in place. And it’s absolutely not necessary crawl under the car. Put the speedometer drive in place and tighten it with a nut.

That's it, you have new oil in your gearbox.
