How to drain anti-freeze from a tank: 3 ways

Today we will talk about three ways to drain the anti-freeze from the tank.

Why do you need to drain the anti-freeze agent from the car washer reservoir? Most often the need for this arises in the spring. It's warmer outside, there's no need to use winter washer anymore, but it still remains in the reservoir under the hood. Everything would be fine, but the smell of the antifreeze kills any desire to use it further when there is no longer a need for it. In winter, like it or not, I had to endure it, in spring - no longer.

What to do if the season has passed, and there is still quite a lot of anti-freeze left in the tank? There are 3 ways to drain it, let's start from simple to complex.

Method 1: Turn on the windshield washer

This method is the simplest - we turn on the windshield washer, the anti-freeze pours onto the glass, the wipers sweep it away - beautiful, sit and wait until the liquid runs out. However, if the washer reservoir is full, you will have to wait quite a long time. This is an additional load on the washer pump, which may fail. In addition, the entire glass and hood of the car (and if you’re “lucky” with the wind, then the whole car) will be doused with a “fragrant” washer. Another disadvantage of this method is that even after the antifreeze is completely used up, some amount of it will remain at the bottom of the tank.

Method 2: Remove the washer pump

The second method is to remove the washer pump. It is a little more complex, but also more effective. To do this, disconnect the wires and hose from the pump installed on the washer reservoir. The pump itself can be mounted in different ways. For example, on Kalina, you just need to pull it up from the seating rubber - it will come out, and a fountain of anti-freeze will begin to flow from the hole. Have a rag ready so you can cover the generator and other electrical components under the hood from splashes.

As in the first case, some of the liquid will remain at the bottom of the tank. But it can be forcibly drained. First you need to open the lid of the tank so that under atmospheric pressure the maximum amount of liquid pours out on its own. Then you need to supply air under pressure into the neck. This could be air from the compressor, or in extreme cases, you can simply blow into the tank with your mouth. The remaining liquid will flow out of the pump mounting hole in a fountain.

Method 3. Remove the tank

The third method is to remove the entire washer reservoir. This method is the most complex and labor-intensive. However, if you have already removed the tank, you can not just drain all the anti-freeze from it to the last drop. It can be completely washed, inside and out, and then put back on the car.

After draining the antifreeze, you can fill the tank with fresh water and enjoy your trips without the washer smell that bothers you over the winter.
