Checking the functionality and replacing the sensor
Like any part of the DDM, it can fail. It is known that without oil, the engine of any car cannot operate for a long time. It protects parts from wear, helps the engine cool and prevents overheating. This makes the process of monitoring oil level and quality necessary. In addition, an important indicator is its pressure.
First of all, you should carefully inspect the sensor. The absence of mechanical damage on the sensor does not yet indicate the absence of malfunctions. Damage to the sensor can be not only mechanical, but also technical in nature. Therefore, the process of checking the oil pressure sensor is very important.
When a signal appears about a change in pressure in the system, it becomes necessary to check the functionality of the sensor. First, the integrity of the power supply is externally assessed and the oil level in the system is measured with a dipstick. After this, you can begin checking the sensor itself.
To do this, you need to perform a number of actions:
- Unscrew the sensor.
- Install a pressure gauge in its place.
- Start the engine.
- Analyze the information from the pressure gauge (if the pressure reading is more than 0.35 kg/cm2, then the sensor is working).
If there is no pressure gauge, then the pressure can be checked in another way. You should unscrew the DDM, turn on the starter, and if oil splashes fly out of the hole, it means that lubrication is carried out normally, and the pressure sensor has failed. As a rule, the price of a new oil pressure sensor for a VAZ-2107 with article number 695306 is 100-150 rubles, depending on the manufacturer.
If we talk about the process of replacing the DDM itself, it does not have any difficulties. Before replacing, it is necessary to clean the sensor from dust and dirt, as debris from a faulty sensor can get into the engine.
Then the contact wire is disconnected from the sensor, and the removed negative terminal from the battery is installed in its place. Using a 21 mm wrench, the sensor is loosened, after which you can easily unscrew it. Then the new sensor is screwed in, the contact wire is attached and the battery terminal is returned to its place.
Malfunctions and checking the oil pressure sensor
Here are the most common malfunctions of oil pressure sensors that occur on any car:
- loss of tightness of the sensor, as a result of which oil gets inside and changes the operation of the electrical part;
- contamination of the sensor inlet;
- leakage of the threaded connection of the sensor and cylinder head;
- oxidation of sensor contacts;
- incorrect sensor readings.
There are two ways to check the sensor: screw a pressure gauge adapter into the sensor seat, or connect the sensor to a pneumatic pump through a suitable adapter. In the first case, it will be possible to check not only the sensor, but also the operation of the oil system; in the second, only the serviceability of the sensor and the reliability of its readings.
What to do if the sensor lights up
If the oil pressure light on the dashboard comes on, you must first turn off the engine and try to understand the cause of the problem in order to find the most optimal solution to the problem.
Malfunction | Cause | Possible Solution |
The light came on suddenly at idle | Oil receiver is dirty. Worn oil pump. The oil pressure sensor is faulty. Short circuit. The crankshaft liner is worn out. | Replacing the sensor |
The light came on after an oil change. | Low oil level. The oil pump is faulty. | Measure the amount of oil and add it if necessary. To replace the oil pump, contact a service station. |
The light comes on at low speed (less than 1000) | The oil receiver is clogged. The crankshaft liner is worn out. | Clear the oil receiver of debris. Using special tools, check the operation of the crankshaft. |
The light comes on at high speeds | The oil pressure has dropped to less than 0.5 kg/cm2; The oil pump has failed. | Add oil to the engine. Replace the oil pump. |
The light comes on when braking | The oil level has dropped sharply. Problems with the brake system. | Check oil level. Check the brake system. |
Thus, the oil pressure sensor on the VAZ-2107 plays a very important role in ensuring stable operation. To do this, it is necessary to constantly monitor the serviceability of the DDM and, if necessary, replace it immediately.
Why does the oil pressure light come on in a VAZ classic?
The first step is to distinguish cases when an icon in the form of an oil can is suddenly displayed. It is completely safe for the icon to light up for just a few moments in the following cases:
when there is a strong roll of the car on a sharp turn;
when starting in winter;
after a long period of parking on uneven ground.
As a rule, in such situations, oil flows from one part of the engine to another, which is why the oil pressure sensor is triggered. However, after some time, the working fluid is evenly distributed, and the signal about a drop in pressure in the system stops. The situation is similar when starting the engine unit in the cold season: at low temperatures, the working fluid thickens, accordingly, it is necessary to warm up the engine properly in order to create the necessary pressure in the system.
In all other cases, the appearance of an oil can on the instrument panel indicates the presence of failures or malfunctions. So for what reasons can the oil pressure light come on in classic VAZ models?
First of all, due to a lack of oil in the engine.
Due to an exhausted oil filter.
The oil pressure sensor or its wiring is to blame.
Wear of the liner on the crankshaft.
The oil pump has failed.
Any of these reasons can affect the oil pressure level in the engine unit. Therefore, the car owner will first have to find the source of the problem and only then begin troubleshooting.

Installing the oil pressure indicator in the 2107 tidy
I have long wanted to know the oil pressure in the system, and then a couple of months ago I came across an article where it was written that the pressure gauge from GAZ 3302 fits perfectly into the 7-position panel. I looked for this pointer for a long time, in the end I found it at a price of 550 rubles (ppt), but it’s a bit expensive for a small pointer. Here is a photo of it immediately after purchase
In general, they write that it is 1 in 1 as a fuel level indicator, only the picture is different. I didn’t want to redraw anything there, so I was looking for the GAZ 3302 indicator. Well, then it started… I removed the instrument panel, here is its number
I pulled out the economizer that no one needed, drilled holes for a new indicator
tried on a new pointer
It would seem that everything was fine, BUT a HUGE problem was finding nuts with a 2mm thread to screw this indicator, but I found it after visiting all the stores, broke all the stash in the garage, and in the end my dad found it somewhere at home))
Then I screwed the whole thing through a PCB plate like
Then I took the “+” and “-” from the dashboard with the wiring, and under the control from the sensor I added a “folder” so that it could be disconnected, well, in human terms))
It turned out something like this
The connected wiring looks something like this
Then I found in my dad’s stashes a spacer adapter and the pressure sensor itself
made in USSR
Cleaned the block, unscrewed the original sensor
screwed in the adapter and spacer, and then screwed in the critical pressure sensor
The result is: Idle
I don't know why it's in red, maybe the sensor is being calibrated, or maybe the pointer is designed for slightly different calibrations
But at 3000 rpm everything is fine
While I was climbing under the panel, I also decided to “calm down” the tank needle, for this I used two capacitors of 10,000 microfarats for 25 volts (they cost 150 rubles each).
That's all for now)) thank you everyone
Reasons for the oil pressure indicator to light up in VAZ cars and their elimination
Before moving on to listing the reasons for turning on an oil lamp, one important note should be made. The disadvantage of the pressure indicator on classic VAZ models is that it lights up not only when there are problems in the engine lubrication system. The car owner can remove and completely overhaul the engine, but the oil pressure light will remain on. The fact is that the sensor itself may be faulty, its wiring may be damaged, and the oil level in the system may drop naturally, simply because the oil has exhausted its service life.
A water pump, also known as a water pump, is responsible for circulating antifreeze in the system. Details of its repair are set out in the following material: https://vazweb.ru/desyatka/ohlazhdenie/remont-pompyi-vaz-2107-svoimi-rukami.html
If there is a malfunction in the lubrication system, the oil pressure indicator on the car dashboard lights up
Oil filter malfunction or poor quality
A failed or malfunctioning oil filter is the most common reason for the indicator to turn on. As a rule, it is because of problems with the filter that the oil indicator lights up at idle and goes out after accelerating .
If the filter fails or its quality leaves much to be desired, then it simply cannot retain the oil, and it begins to flow down into the crankcase. If the oil has leaked out completely, then the next time the engine is started, it will begin to experience so-called oil starvation, which can lead to jamming of its main parts. This is a serious problem that cannot always be eliminated even with expensive repairs.
Oil filter on a VAZ 2106, due to a malfunction in which the oil pressure light comes on
Solution: replace the oil filter. Moreover, when purchasing this part, you should always pay attention to the brand and country of origin. You should also read the vehicle's owner's manual and become familiar with the filter models recommended by the manufacturer. It should be remembered that a high-quality filter cannot be cheap, and saving on this part is categorically unacceptable.

General decrease in oil level in the system
Sometimes the oil level in the lubrication system of a VAZ car can drop sharply, which will cause the light to turn on. The reason may be a leak of some kind of oil seal, gasket, etc. This phenomenon is especially noticeable when leaving the parking lot, when oil stains remain where the car was parked.
Oil flowing from under the engine cover of the VAZ 2106 helps turn on the low lubricant pressure indicator
Solution: open the hood and carefully inspect the car engine for oil stains. If nothing can be found, the car must be placed on an inspection hole and its underbody and crankcase protection must be inspected (you should use a powerful flashlight for this work). In the vast majority of cases, the leaking connection or gasket can be found. After this, it must be replaced, and oil must be added to the system, bringing the lubrication level to an acceptable level.
The oil pressure sensor is faulty
The oil pressure sensor, like any other car part, can break down over time. After this, it begins to give incorrect readings, misleading the driver.
A faulty oil sensor for a VAZ 2106 car can cause the lubricant pressure indicator to trigger
Solution: check the sensor and replace it. To understand that it is the oil pressure sensor that is faulty, it should be replaced with another sensor that is definitely working (if the repair is carried out in a garage, then a working sensor can be temporarily borrowed from a neighbor who has a similar car). Having installed a working sensor, you need to start the engine. If the light does not light up after starting the engine, then the cause of the problem can be considered established. After this, the car owner can only purchase a new sensor and install it on the car (since this part is practically irreparable).
Oil pressure sensor is clogged
A clogged oil pressure sensor is another reason why the indicator on the dashboard lights up. Unlike the previous case, here the car owner can do without replacing the device.
Solution: first of all, it is necessary to establish that the sensor is clogged and not broken. To do this, the engine starts at idle speed. Then their number is increased to one and a half thousand per minute. If after this the light on the panel goes out, then the sensor should be removed and cleaned. It is convenient to clean the outside of the sensor with an old toothbrush. And dirt from the oil channels should be removed with a piece of thin steel wire.
The oil pump has failed
Oil pump failure is the most difficult problem. If this unit does not work correctly, then it cannot maintain the pressure in the system necessary to lubricate all rubbing parts of the engine. The sensor will detect that the pressure has dropped and the driver will see a light on the dashboard.
An article dedicated to repairing and replacing the fuel pump on “classic series” cars is located here: https://vazweb.ru/desyatka/pitanie/remont-benzonasosa-vaz-2106.html
The oil pump is removed from the VAZ 2106 engine manually after first loosening the mounting bolts
Solution: remove the oil pump and inspect it for any malfunctions. If there are no faults, the pump must be thoroughly cleaned. After this, the engine oil is completely drained and replaced with new oil. This will prevent the oil pump from clogging again.

Sensor wiring fault
The electrical wiring of the pressure sensor may become frayed, a short circuit may occur due to insulation failure, or one of the many plugs may come off, which will lead to a breakdown in contact.
Solution: Thoroughly inspect all wiring associated with the pressure sensor. It is necessary to find out whether there are any traces of a short circuit in the form of melted insulation on the wires, or whether there are any kinks in the wires. If nothing of the kind could be found, you should remove and reconnect all plugs and contact connectors that are in one way or another connected to the sensor. If the wiring is not damaged, this will be enough to restore the correct operation of the pressure indicator.
Oil pressure sensor VAZ 2107, connection diagram
On a VAZ 2107 car produced in 1988, one standard emergency oil pressure sensor is installed, which is connected to an emergency pressure lamp in the instrument panel.
Previously, it was paired with an oil pressure indicator sensor and a dial indicator in the instrument panel.

Description of the connection diagram for the VAZ 2107 oil pressure sensor
The emergency oil pressure sensor is installed in the open circuit of the connection of the oil pressure warning lamp in the panel on the vehicle's instrument panel. Namely, the “masses”. When the ignition is turned on, there is no pressure in the engine lubrication system, the moving contact of the sensor is pressed, the circuit is closed, the emergency oil pressure warning lamp in the instrument panel is on. After starting the engine, the pressure in the lubrication system increases, the contact inside the sensor moves under the influence of pressure, opening the circuit, and the light goes out.
Notes and additions
On VAZ 2107 cars, the emergency oil pressure sensor MM-120 and its modifications are used: 2101-3810600, 2101-3829010, 2101-9829010-01, 2101-9829010-02.
Where is the oil pressure sensor located on VAZ cars?
On all cars of the “classic” VAZ series (2101-2107), the sensor is located in the left rear part of the cylinder block, next to the gearbox and steering column. On all 8-valve engines of front-wheel drive VAZ cars, including modern Kalina, Granta and Priora, the sensor is located on the rear left side of the cylinder head (cylinder head), next to the timing belt casing and the injector receiver. On all 16-valve engines, the oil pressure sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head, where the left timing shaft bearing is located.

Replacement: oil pressure sensor VAZ 2107
As sad as it is to admit, any component of a car can fail, and this happens at the most inopportune moment. In this regard, control and measuring devices are no exception. The reasons for this may be different:
- Violation of operating conditions prescribed by the manufacturer.
- Temperature violation.
- Elementary mechanical damage to the sensor.
In general, these reasons are enough, but the result is the same. Considering that control and measuring devices cannot be repaired, they must be replaced if necessary. In this step-by-step guide for car enthusiasts, it will be described and demonstrated, based on a VAZ 2107 car, replacing the oil pressure sensor.
Useful information about oil pressure on VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107
Welcome! Oil pressure - in fact, this is one of the most important checks that need to be done with the car periodically (Because in some cases the instruments lie) or only at the moment when the oil pressure gauge begins to show unacceptable values, and all this will be accompanied by the burning of a special lamps.
Note! There is an interesting video at the end of the article, check it out too!
What happens if the pressure in the lubrication system is lost? Some people already know the answer to this question, but others don’t yet, let’s explain. When the engine is running, its parts are lubricated, but how to supply lubricant to the parts if there is no pressure in the system? No, no way, and therefore, in the absence of pressure, engine parts are not lubricated because the oil does not have time to reach them due to the lack of pressure!
And therefore, the loss of pressure in the lubrication system is very dangerous for the engine, and this leads to oil starvation, that is, the old oil leaves when the engine is running and is immediately replaced by a new one, but as mentioned above, due to low pressure, the new oil may simply not reach, but the old stuff still comes out and therefore the parts are left simply without lubrication.
What can cause a loss of pressure? This mainly happens due to various reasons, one of these reasons is deformation of the oil pan, which can happen at any time to the car, for example: You are driving a car, and there is an obstacle ahead that you put in the middle of the car, but still it the obstacle itself hits you against the bottom and thereby breaks through the pan.
WHY IS THIS SENSOR NEEDED?
The main technological function of this device, naturally, is to monitor the oil pressure in the engine oil lubrication system. The data that this sensor transmits to the oil pressure indicator is very important for the driver. Using them, the driver determines how correctly the car’s engine is working and, if necessary, makes a specific decision.
Attention: When the oil pressure drops to a critical level, you must stop the machine and turn off the engine. It is possible that there was an oil leak from the engine lubrication system. If there is significant loss of lubricant, the engine may seize.
However, it is also possible that the oil pressure sensor has simply failed. The absence of obvious mechanical damage on the surface of the sensor in no way indicates its serviceability. The defect can be not only mechanical, but also technological in nature. In this case, in relation to the proposed option, it is assumed that the VAZ 2107 oil pressure sensor will be replaced.
How to properly check the performance of the oil pressure sensor
If a light on the instrument panel indicates a decrease in pressure in the engine lubrication system, then in this case it would be rational to check the functionality of the sensor. Checking the functionality of the sensor is carried out using a pressure gauge. But before checking the sensor, it is necessary to check the oil level in the system and the integrity of the power supply wiring to the oil pressure sensor using a dipstick. If there are no comments on these two items, then you can start checking the sensor. To do this you need:
- Unscrew the oil pressure sensor.
- Install a pressure gauge in its place.
- Start the car engine.
- Check the pressure gauge readings.
If the pressure gauge shows pressure in the lubrication system of at least 0.35 kgf/cm2, this means that the system is working normally and the sensor is faulty. However, a pressure gauge may not always be at hand. In this case, you need to do the following. You need to unscrew the pressure sensor and turn on the starter for a short time (see Repairing the VAZ 2107 starter - instructions), but there is no need to start the engine. If splashes of lubricant fly out of the mounting hole, this means that the movement of lubricant in the system is normal and the reason for the warning lamp to turn on is the same faulty sensor. Consequently, it is necessary to purchase a new sensor from a retail network, by the way, the price for it is low, and replace it.
How to choose a new oil pressure sensor
When selecting a sensor, consider the following: A sensor from the vehicle/engine manufacturer or its partners is always better than one from a third party. This is especially true for Russian cars. Make sure the sensor you choose is suitable for your vehicle. If you and the seller do not know which sensor you need, then refer to your car's engine repair manual or parts and spare parts catalog. The catalog number of the sensor is indicated there. Before purchasing a sensor, ask the seller to present documents for it. If the seller cannot provide any accompanying documents, it means that the sensor was manufactured by someone unknown, so no one knows whether it will fit your engine according to its internal settings or not.
