How to remove or replace a windshield wiper trapezoid

Repair of windshield wiper trapezoid

A complete replacement of the trapezoid may not be necessary if the diagnostic result shows that the wipers have stopped working due to worn bushings.
In this case, the wipers are repaired. For those who have never repaired windshield wipers, you need to know that you cannot unscrew the armature shaft adjustment screw. This will lead to a violation of the axial clearance of the shaft. Repair of the windshield wiper trapezoid Kalina and Cherry amulet is carried out as follows: The trapezoid crank is held with a nut. This nut must be unscrewed with a wrench. Then the crank is pryed up with a screwdriver and removed. The motor is located on the bracket. It is secured with three bolts, which are unscrewed with a wrench. The screws connecting the wires and fuses are unscrewed. The wires are disconnected from the fuse

The gearmotor is carefully removed from the bracket. Use a screwdriver to pry up and remove the retaining ring located on the gearbox shaft. Under the ring there are adjusting washers that need to be marked and only then removed

The markings will help you install them correctly during reassembly. The cover on the gearbox and the gearbox panel located under it are dismantled. Then the gear is removed. The housing is secured with several screws. One of them is located on the reverse side. Two small plates are removed from the housing, then it is disconnected from the electric motor. The armature is removed from the motor housing. To remove all coal dust inside the engine housing, blow with compressed air. Two locking rings are removed from the trapezoid. The rod and wiper bracket are disconnected. The adjusting washers are removed from the two rollers. From the brush holders located on the gearbox housing, we take out the brush springs. We change the springs if they are damaged. Check the brushes in the brush holder. If the brushes stick or move poorly when pressed, this indicates that the brushes are worn out or covered in splinters. In this case, they are replaced. We inspect the hull anchor. We clean its collector with fine-grained sandpaper. If it is badly burned, then we install a new anchor. A worn or damaged gear gear is replaced with a new part. You can try to restore or replace a deformed rod. The assembled rod is changed completely if the splines and threads of two rollers are damaged. The oxidized or burnt self-stop mechanism is cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper. All rubber parts are replaced with new ones.

Possible washer malfunctions

In order for the wipers to work properly, a constant supply of water is necessary. To automate this process, a washer was made. There may be the following reasons for its failure.

  1. The steering column switch has failed. To check this, you need to close the two contacts located under the steering wheel. Front contact 53ah-w, rear contact 53ah-wh. After this, measure the resistance. In case of low resistance or breakdown, the switch must be replaced with a new one.
  2. The washer pump does not supply water. It needs to be changed.
  3. The wire connecting the switch to the pump has broken.
  4. The injectors are clogged with dirt. They can be cleaned with a sharp needle.
  5. Relay K3 does not work.
  6. The hose broke.

As you can see, even simple parts have enough problems and breakdowns. However, following the operating rules will help avoid repairs and increase their service life.

The windshield wiper drive trapezoid is a metal frame to which the windshield wiper rods are attached, as well as the gear motor that controls them.

In what cases is trapezoid replacement required?

Sooner or later, every owner of a VAZ 2114 is faced with a situation where the front windshield wiper stops working. It often happens that in the morning the wipers work normally, but as soon as the car starts moving, they begin to crawl along the glass at the speed of the minute hand. Eventually the thermistor kicks in and they stop.

Sometimes the trapezoid is removed when replacing the gear motor, but in fact the motor can be easily removed without dismantling the trapezoid.

How to replace the windshield wiper trapezoid?

Some experts advise first dismantling the stove motor and fuse box, but in most cases you can do without it.

  • Open the hood and disconnect the windshield wiper cables from the fuse box.
  • Remove the fan shroud and heater filter.
  • Next, you will need to remove the heater motor mounts and move it away without removing it.
  • After this, you need to remove the cover from the windshield wiper mounts and unscrew the nut of the mount itself. To do this you will need a ten key.
  • Use a feather screwdriver to pry up the rubber on the windshield wiper nut and unscrew it with a “24” wrench.
  • Remove the rings and gaskets located on the wiper shaft.
  • Perform the same steps for the second windshield wiper.
  • After this, you need to unscrew the trapezoid fastenings in the engine compartment.
  • The heater motor and fuse box prevent the trapezoid from being removed when it is in a free position.
  • To remove the trapezoid, you can either completely dismantle the stove motor along with the fuse box, or simply remove the gear motor from the trapezoid (the second option is preferable).
  • Before removing the gearbox, mark the current position of the crank with a marker. Then dismantle it using the keys “13” and “10”.

Bushings are a common disease of the Niva trapezium

How to adjust the trapezoid of the wipers of a VAZ 2110
Very often, problems with the wipers can lead to wear of the trapezoid bushings. If you notice that free movement has appeared and the Niva's wipers have become loose, then this directly indicates a problem with the bushings. This could happen because dust and sand got into them, their wear increased sharply and the Niva's wipers began to malfunction.

Most often, the asynchrony and delay of the wipers relative to each other indicates that there is a need to repair the Chevrolet Niva trapezoid. You can try to repair it, and if you can’t repair it, you will have to completely replace it.

Wiper device

Structurally, windshield wipers are an electric motor with a built-in gearbox (geared motor), which transmits movement to a trapezoid - a system of levers. In turn, the trapezoid of the VAZ 2114 wipers drives the brushes, which perform mechanical cleaning of the glass.

The windshield wiper operates in 3 modes:

  • continuous at 1st speed;
  • continuous at 2nd speed;
  • intermittent.

In addition, it can be turned on both synchronously with the washer and work without it.

You can find out that the wiper motor has failed by the following external signs:

  • the wiper blades are motionless after turning on the cleaner (in all modes), the sound of the electric motor is not heard;
  • wipers move very slowly or freeze periodically;
  • the brushes are motionless, but the gear motor is working;
  • The wipers only move in one direction and then stop.

Trapezium wipers VAZ 2114

It is worth noting that the above problems may be caused not only by the gear motor, but also by other components of the windshield wiper, in particular the VAZ 2114 trapezoid. When starting repair work, it is its condition (integrity of connections, absence of deformation of the arms) that should be checked first, and then move on to the motor itself.

It is also worth noting that if the wipers do not work or work incorrectly in intermittent mode, then either the steering column switch itself or the relay that controls their operation may be to blame. In both cases, these elements should be checked (in the case of a relay, by installing a similar model that is known to be working) and, if necessary, replaced.

In addition, if the wipers are completely stationary and the motor is not working (regardless of the selected mode), you should check and, if necessary, replace the bimetallic fuse numbered F16 in the general block (and if the rear wiper does not turn on, then you need to check fuse F7 ).

Spare part selection

How to remove and replace the cigarette lighter on a VAZ-2110

The catalog number of the original wiper trapezoid is 2110-5205010. Give preference to trapezoids from manufacturers:

  • Balaton;
  • At program;
  • Startvolt.

Part of the old and new sample

The old-style trapezoid rods are secured with two studs.

Therefore, it is better to remove the old part and take it to an auto parts store. They are not only attached differently, but also differ in the connectors through which they are connected to the motor. If you can’t find an old-style trapezoid, and this is exactly what you have, you’ll have to redo the system or look for a used part.

As a rule, trapezoids of a new type are available for sale from various manufacturers. One of the popular models has the article number VLT2110–5205010-Р.

If the windshield wiper motor is working properly, you can only change the trapezoid itself.

How to choose and replace the windshield wiper trapezoid correctly

How to replace and remove the fuel pump on a Lada Kalina with your own hands

During the operation of the windshield wiper, the parts of its trapezoid wear out, become deformed or destroyed - as a result, the entire mechanism ceases to perform its functions normally. A malfunction of the trapezoid is indicated by difficult movement of the brushes, periodic stops and desynchronization of movement, and all this may be accompanied by increased noise. To identify the malfunction, it is necessary to check the trapezoid, and if the breakdown cannot be eliminated, replace the mechanism.

For replacement, you should only take those trapezoids that are designed specifically for this car - this is the only way to guarantee that the windshield wiper can be installed properly and will work reliably. In some cases, it is acceptable to use analogues, however, even on cars of the same model of different years of manufacture, the mechanisms may differ in the fastening and design of individual parts (which is associated with changes in the body structure, glass location, etc.).

Replacing the trapezoid must be carried out in accordance with the vehicle repair instructions. Usually, to dismantle the entire mechanism, it is enough to remove the brush levers, then unscrew the fasteners of the roller brackets or the general bracket, and remove the trapezoid assembly with the motor and gearbox. In some cars, the trapezoid and electric motor are removed separately, and access to their fasteners is provided from different sides of the niche under the windshield. Installing a new mechanism is carried out in the reverse order, and some parts may need to be lubricated. When performing installation, it is necessary to ensure that the rods, leads and other parts of the trapezoid are positioned correctly, otherwise the operation of the mechanism may be disrupted. If the trapezoid has been selected and installed correctly, the wiper will work reliably, keeping the glass clean and transparent in all conditions.

How to install a windshield wiper trapezoid

Everything is done in reverse order.

  • VAZ 2110 windshield wiper trapezoid: do-it-yourself replacement

Before installing the trapezoid, it is recommended to lubricate it thoroughly. It is recommended to lubricate all moving rubbing parts. Graphite and cyatin can be used as a lubricant. Litol will not work, because... loses its properties in the cold.

First, we insert the trapezoid, attach the wiper arms, insert and screw on the heater motor, observe the position of the crank, do not forget about the ground wire, etc.

Do-it-yourself modification and replacement of wipers

Which wipers are better is up to the car owner to decide. Those installed on the VAZ 2110, as well as on the UAZ, do their job well from the factory, but it can be modified with washers from other companies that are of higher quality. Many people are attracted to frameless brushes - this is a good option. They are compact in size and equipped with a special leash mechanism. True, they do not look very attractive on the VAZ 2110, since the fastener to the standard washer arm turns out to be massive. Therefore they need improvement.

Frameless car washers

To perform a replacement or modification, you must perform the following steps:

  1. First you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.
  2. Then you need to tilt the mount towards you and remove the brush.
  3. If there is a decorative trim, it must be removed.
  4. By unscrewing the bolt, you can remove the old brush.
  5. Before replacing parts, be sure to check the dimensions of the new washer with the old one. It is advisable that the new one does not exceed the size of the old one by more than 2 cm.
  6. Installation of the new kit is carried out in the reverse order.

After upgrading, you should check the functionality of the unit: whether the brushes creak, how they work when switching modes. At high speeds of the windshield wiper motor, the wipers should work quickly, at low speeds - slowly. In addition, they must support intermittent operation.

How to change the wiper motor on a VAZ 2114

Today I replaced the motor with a wiper, the old one was slowly but surely dying, the wipers could barely crawl across the glass, and the motor made a groaning sound;) I thought I would be tortured to change it, because I changed the trapezoid of the wipers in the fall, I cursed everyone and everything!), but Everything worked out fine, the motor can be removed without removing the trapezoid! We unscrew the 3 bolts that hold the motor on the trapezoid and then the lowest bolt on the trapezoid itself, where the mass is usually still screwed from it, then we bend the trapezoid up (don’t be afraid, nothing will happen to it, I did this twice today, because At first they sold me the wrong motor))) and we take out the motor, it’s clear in the place which way it needs to be turned! And we put everything back together in reverse order!

What affects the condition of the trapezius

The main cause of all problems associated with the trapezoid is the location of the mechanism. The wiper motor and trapezoid are located directly under the glass.

Dirt, small abrasive particles, water and washer fluid constantly accumulate in this area.

This leads to wear at the moving joints and loss of lubricant. Active wear of the plastic bushings of the hinges is observed, backlashes appear, resistance noticeably increases during operation and the load on the motor increases. In such conditions, the trapezoid for the wipers and the motor quickly fail.

As a rule, the VAZ 2110 trapezoid requires revision every 2 years. Such an inspection should mean cleaning the trapezoid from dirt and additional lubrication. If this is not done, after 5-6 years the trapezoid will need to be replaced or repaired (a trapezoid repair kit is used).

The wiper motor and trapezoid are located directly under the glass, so some of the water or washer fluid falls on them. In addition to water, dust, dirt and various small debris get there. All this leads to a change in the properties of the lubricant and deterioration in the performance of the trapezoid. When the lubricant loses its properties, the plastic bushings of the hinges begin to wear out, resulting in backlash and increasing resistance during operation.

Operating principle and design of the purifier

The trapezoid is the main part of the windshield wiper system, which often fails. The wipers begin to work thanks to a trapezoid, which transfers to them the rotational movements coming from the electric drive shaft. The windshield wiper system consists of a simple but reliable design. This includes the following elements:

  • Electric motor and control system.
  • Gearbox and worm gear.
  • Trapezoid.
  • Levers, brush, leash.

The smooth movement of the wiper blades is achieved through a running electric motor, which transmits the amount of force to the windshield wiper arms. You can increase the amount of force using a gearbox connected to an electric motor. This is achieved by reducing the shaft speed. The lower the rotation frequency, the greater the amount of force transmitted to the trapezoid. Thanks to the trapezoid, the two brushes work efficiently and synchronously.

Design features

Each manufacturer produces its own models of trapezoids. All devices are identical in design; the only distinguishing features are the different sizes and shapes of the parts. This unit consists of the following parts:

  • Hinges and hinge cups.
  • Tractions.

In order for the system to maintain its integrity when the brushes move, the structure must have a certain margin of safety. The safety margin of the unit is created using the structural links of the trapezoid. What the structure of the links should be is determined by experts using calculations.

The connecting parts of the trapezoid are made of a material that contains polyformaldehyde. This material allows to reduce losses due to friction and improve the energy consumption of the electric drive. It has a high level of wear resistance. Metal elements are coated with a galvanic layer that protects them from corrosion.

How to remove the trapezoid assembly

Before proceeding with the removal, it is necessary to remove the wiper arms, as well as the plastic lining at the very bottom of the windshield, which I wrote about in the instructions for replacing the Kalina cabin filter. There you will need just TORX T20.

After these pads are removed from the car, you can begin to unscrew the bolts and nuts securing the trapezium itself. First, unscrew the bolt on the left, as shown in the photo below:

Then in the center:

And you also need to unscrew one nut on the right side, it’s best to use an open-end wrench there:

Now there is nothing holding the trapezoid and now you can tilt it slightly forward:

To remove it from its seat:

And in order to finally remove it, all that remains is to disconnect the power plug of the motor. It was not possible to photograph everything in its original form, but there is nothing complicated there - bend the latch and pull the plug towards you. You will also need to remove it from the hole in the body in which it is mounted on a latch (clip). Here it is after removal:

How to remove the windshield wiper trapezoid

Many manuals recommend removing the fuse block (FB) and removing the heater motor. We won’t do all this, everything is much simpler!

  1. Open the hood and disconnect the windshield wiper wiring block from the fuse box.
  2. We take out the protective casing of the heater fan and remove the heater filter.
  3. We unscrew the fastenings of the heater motor, move it 90 degrees (it is not necessary to remove it).
  4. Next, we move directly to the wipers: remove the decorative trim on the windshield wiper mount, then use a “10” key to unscrew the nut securing the wiper, and remove the wiper.
  5. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the protective rubber cover of the windshield wiper mounting nut, and unscrew the nut itself with a “24” wrench.
  6. Remove the rings and gaskets from the wiper shaft.
  7. Similarly, remove the other wiper.
  8. Next, we go back to the engine compartment and unscrew the fastenings of the trapezoid to the car body.
  9. Now the trapezoid is in a free position, but it will not be possible to pull it out, because The fuse box and the heater motor are in the way.

Removing the wiper trapezoid

There are two options:

  • completely remove the heater motor, remove the fuse box (two nuts);
  • remove the gear motor from the trapezoid and take out the gear motor one by one, then the trapezoid itself.

For special teapots: please do not confuse the stove motor (heater fan) with the trapezoid gear motor.

In order to remove the gear motor from the trapezoid: remember the position of the crank (you can mark it with a marker), remove it with a key set to “13”, and use a key set to “10” to unscrew the three fastenings of the motor to the trapezoid.

When will you need a new trapeze?

At the slightest breakage of the trapezoid, the correct operation of the wipers is disrupted. Most often, a new part is installed. However, in some cases, you can limit yourself to purchasing a repair kit for the windshield wiper trapezoid and replacing its individual elements

So, what should you pay close attention to?

The very first sign of a breakdown is a weakening of pressure in the system, that is, the wiper cannot cope with the flow of water and snow. There may also be noise during operation, the reverse motion of the windshield wiper is difficult - you can see the tension with which the brush moves across the glass. In addition, the backlash increases. As a result, the glass is not clean enough, stains appear, and all this negatively affects visibility, and therefore our safety.

It is very important to choose the right trapezoid. Externally, they can be the same, but they differ in the method of fastening

For example, VAZ cars have two versions of the trapezoid - old and new. In one case it is fixed with 2 studs, in the second - 4. In addition, the sizes of the windshield wiper arms, as well as the connectors for connecting to the electric motor, are different.

If you have certain knowledge, you can solve all these problems right during the repair, cut off excess fasteners, replace leads, but why this additional work? And there is no guarantee that after such transformations the wipers will work as they should. There is a fairly high probability of play appearing, or the brushes will have difficulty returning to their original position. Therefore, you should not chase minor savings; buy a “original” high-quality part that will last a long time.

Installation of trapezium wipers VAZ 2114

Try turning off the ignition at top dead center
first. h. sh..i. catch this dead point, especially the top one

you need to start from the bottom

let the motor run several cycles, for example, by watering with a washer and subsequent passes of the wipers, BUT without the drivers, when the shafts stop then start pulling the drivers and continue the final adjustment

and at the end - they fall below the initial position and rise up

if such garbage is observed, then there may be two reasons, interconnected, or arising and affecting the operation independently of each other - a limit switch in the motor gearbox, which is unlikely, but most likely a connecting rod on the shaft

or
the wiper relay itself
is treated by selecting and replacing the relay, until the moment comes when when the wipers move downwards they stop and do not jump up a couple of cm

getting into the gearbox is more difficult

and it’s much more hectic and there’s not much regulation there

Replacing the windshield wiper trapezoid

Replacing the windshield wiper trapezoid is most often found on older cars. The fact is that the parts of this mechanism are subject to natural wear and tear, which gradually renders the elements unusable. Of course, the service life of this system largely depends on climatic conditions. In our country, snow and rain constantly accompany drivers from October to April in most regions, so the safety of movement depends on the condition of the windshield wipers. Of course, over time, the appearance of the system components also deteriorates. Due to constant exposure to sandblasting, moisture and reagents, damage to the paintwork occurs. However, this only affects the appearance of the elements. In such a situation, you can eliminate the problem by painting the parts.

Replacement - in detail and in detail

Of course, at the first malfunction, you can go to a service center, where specialists will repair the wipers in a matter of minutes. However, this option will require extra material costs, and given that replacing the windshield wiper trapezoid is not such a labor-intensive process, you can solve a similar problem yourself. Let's start with how to change the entire mechanism.

First, you should dismantle the old part; by the way, this cannot be avoided during repairs. To do this, we need a 12mm wrench. Unscrew the nuts securing the wipers and remove them. Be careful, as the spring is quite elastic, and some difficulties may arise with dismantling. To make the process easier, bend the leashes first. Next, unscrew the screws with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the plastic part. Using a knife, we pull out the plugs and remove the remaining fasteners.

To get directly to the trapezoid, the plastic parts of the casing should also be removed. The part itself is attached to the electric motor. Next, unscrew the nuts and screw that secure the windshield wiper trapezoid and the electric motor to the body bracket. Be sure to disconnect the power connectors during this repair. We dismantle the electric motor, remove all the fastenings of the trapezoid and pull it out.

The new part comes into our hands in a disassembled state, so it must be assembled before installation. So, fastening is carried out with three bolted connections. The first element is inserted into the eye near the rubber casing. Please note that you will have to put in some effort, but do not immediately fix it with a bolt. Next, put on the remaining part of the knot, and be sure to adjust its position.

Now you can tighten all the nuts and proceed directly to the installation. So, the windshield wiper trapezoid is assembled in the reverse order, but be prepared for the fact that you will have to adjust the position of the blades. In addition, it would be a good idea to lubricate all joints and rubbing surfaces with graphite lubricant. Just do not use lithol, as it loses its properties at low temperatures.

System operation

The front part of the car is under constant influence of external influences. The fact is that the incoming air flow brings with it dust, dirt, moisture and road debris. This also applies to the windshield - an element that plays a very important role in providing the driver with visibility. Of course, in dry weather foreign particles rarely stick to the surface, but in the presence of precipitation this can become a serious problem. Water and snow significantly reduce visibility, which can lead to very dire consequences.

To avoid excesses, a windshield cleaning system is installed (however, a similar device is often used for the rear element). It is an electric motor connected to a metal trapezoid. The structure is connected to the leads on which the brushes are placed. Activation occurs after moving a special handle located on the steering column. Triggering is possible thanks to the installed relay. There are several operating modes, including automatic (only if there is a rain sensor). This system also includes a glass washer - a pump, pipeline and nozzles that supply liquid from a special reservoir.

Performing operations

Replacing a car's windshield wiper trapezoid may also involve repairing or replacing the motor that powers the system. Of course, in this case the price of events will increase significantly. The reason for checking the electrical system is the failure of the device to operate. The condition of mechanical elements can be determined by the presence of backlashes. Also, a reason to think about repairs will be a decrease in the efficiency of the windshield wiper. However, in this case it is also necessary to check the brushes, which, of course, are also subject to wear.

Let's consider the main stages:

  • Removing the protective frill
  • Removing Fasteners
  • Motor shutdown
  • Dismantling the trapezoid
  • Installation of a new structure
  • Assembly

Note that the frill also deteriorates over time. This can be determined by smudges or the presence of moisture underneath.

Bushing repair kit

For many foreign cars, it is very difficult to find a repair kit for new bushings in stores. But you can purchase a new rod, into which the bushings are already pressed. Such a part costs a maximum of $50. For rarer cars, even traction is almost impossible to find. In order not to run around the store looking for parts, it is better to restore this unit with your own hands. This is done in two ways:

  • The bushing repair kit for VAZ cars is inexpensive and, due to their diameter, the bushings are well suited for trapezoid traction not only in gazelles, but also in foreign cars. But before buying a repair kit, you need to get the worn bushings and measure the place where they will fit. The outer diameter of the balls, which are located on the trapezoid rollers, is also measured. If you cannot find bushings of the required diameter in the store, they can be made to order.
  • The production of bushings can be ordered at any car service center. The material used is any plastic containing Teflon. Thanks to Teflon, the parts have a low coefficient of friction and do not require frequent lubrication. Bushings made of caprolon material are additionally machined with collars. These collars prevent them from jumping out of their seats. You can make four bushings, two of which will remain spare. It is difficult to press bushings with collars made of inelastic plastic into the holes of the rod. Before pressing, they are softened in boiling water. There is no point in making the beads on the bushings from a very hard material, since they will deteriorate during pressing. The beads are made after the bushings are pressed into the holes of the rod. The ends of the bushings are flared using a soldering iron.

Windshield wipers - taking care of cleanliness

Today, personal transport will not surprise anyone, and the equipment of modern models is aimed at ensuring adequate safety for road users. One of the main elements responsible for our smooth movement are car windshield wipers. They ensure the cleanliness of the windshield and rear glass during precipitation, remove drops of moisture, dirt, traces of insects and other debris.

But can we really assess the situation on the road when the glass is not sufficiently cleaned, everything is stained, and we constantly have to strain our eyes? It follows from this that the high-quality work of wipers also has a direct impact on our health. But now we are not interested in the node as a whole. We'll talk about the trapezoid. It is responsible for converting the rotational impulse of the motor into the translational movement of the windshield wiper blades.

The trapezoid is a rather complex electromechanical device and often fails. The main elements of the purifier are the body, rods, shafts and motor. The components of the gearbox are pins and hinges. The principle of operation is as follows: the windshield wiper motor creates a rotational movement of the finger and sets the trapezoid itself in motion. Rods connect the shafts to the gearbox and transmit oscillatory movements. As a result, the wiper blades move from side to side and clean the glass of dirt.

Characteristics of the windshield wiper trapezoid

The trapezoid is one of the most important elements of the windshield wiper mechanism. The operation of the entire unit depends on its serviceability. To maintain the functionality of the vehicle, you need to know what its device is and how it works.

Purpose and device

The trapezoid is the element of the glass cleaner that translates the rotational movements of the electric motor shaft into the movements of the wipers. Therefore, it is one of the components of safety in bad weather conditions.

Disassembled device

The design of the vehicle is almost the same for all car models. The differences lie in the shape, size of its components and methods of fastening.

The device consists of the following parts:

  • housings;
  • hinged cups;
  • traction;
  • hinges

To reduce friction losses and energy consumption, the device connections are made of polyformaldehyde. It has a low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance. Metal parts are protected from corrosion processes and friction by a galvanic layer.

The principle of operation is as follows: the motor drives the finger, which causes the trapezoid to move. The shafts are connected to the gearbox using rods, performing oscillatory movements. The result of this work is the movement of the wiper brushes from side to side, due to which the glass surface is cleaned.

Symptoms of malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

In order for the windshield wiper trapezoid to be operational, you need to know the signs of its malfunction and try to eliminate them as soon as they are detected.

Another sign of a mechanism malfunction is intermittent, irregular movement of the brushes. The reason for this is oxidation on the drives of the drivers located in the vehicle bushings

If you do not pay attention to the oxide, the electric motor may fail, since a large load falls on it

Windshield wiper motor

If the windshield wiper trapezoid bushings are worn out, play in the windshield wiper arms appears. The weakening of the pressure in the assembly leads to the fact that the wiper does not fit tightly to the glass and cannot cope with the flow of rain. If the linkage of the windshield wiper is faulty, the movement of the blades becomes difficult.

The cause of the malfunction may be wear of individual parts. In this case, you need to remove, disassemble the mechanism and replace worn elements.

The wipers on the VAZ-2109 work slowly

The reasons for reducing the speed of brush movement are:

  • low air temperature;
  • wear (licking) of the splines connecting the levers and wiper housings;
  • problems with the electric motor.

In the first case, the wipers may move more slowly than usual due to the grease solidifying on the gearbox gears. As a rule, when the car warms up, this problem disappears.

When the spline joint wears out, the brushes can also move more slowly due to the rotation of the lever tips in their seats. This problem is solved by replacing worn elements.

If these measures do not bring the desired result, we remove the electric motor and send it for repair.

Functionality and quality of modern wipers

It must be said that the quality of wipers and their size have a huge impact on the safety of the vehicle. Therefore, choosing the right windshield wiper remains a very important task. The reliability and quality of wipers are determined by the fact that they:

  • do not make creaking sounds;
  • have a long service life;
  • Cleans glass very well.

In the absence of any of the qualities described above, the comfort of being in the car is lost, and there is a danger of getting into a traffic accident due to reduced visibility, especially in the rain. The size of the installed wipers plays an important role. If it is slightly larger than required, then the force pressing the blade against the glass, especially when these are frameless wipers, is noticeably reduced. As a result, the glass is poorly cleaned.

In addition, a large brush size will affect the cleaning plane. The edge of the brush may touch the sealing rubber of the windshield, and then it does not touch the working surface. On Kalina's car, the large brush begins to touch the edge of the driver's door. When the brush size is much smaller than required, the cleaning area decreases. The windshield does not clean completely.

At the same time, small wipers leave a dirty island on the glass. What should be the size of brushes on a VAZ 2114? This car model is equipped with two wipers that clean the windshield. They have the same symmetrical size, equal to 51 cm. However, it is possible to install brushes whose size will be slightly changed.

On the driver's side, the blade can be 53 cm long, and on the passenger side - 51 cm. When installing identical 53 cm blades, a small strip of water will begin to form in the center of the glass. The rear window of the car is also equipped with a windshield wiper.

The size of the brush in this case does not exceed 30 cm. It is allowed to install a wiper 33 cm long. It fits perfectly into the size of the glass. Some car enthusiasts even install a brush measuring 40 cm, but for them it is necessary to specifically increase the stroke limit.

In other words, the wiper should not touch the glass seal. To do this, you need to remove the motor, move a few teeth and put it in place.

Removing the trapezium wipers of the Priora

Procedure:

  2. Unscrew the 2 bolts of the upper fastening of the tank bracket (in the engine compartment) using a 10mm socket.
  3. Remove the bracket.
  4. Disconnect the block from the wiring harness of the Priora wiper motor by pressing the latch.
  1. Unscrew the screw of the upper heater mounting using a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Unscrew two nuts No. 1 and bolt No. 2 securing the purifier using a 10mm socket.
  3. Remove the Priora windshield wiper by squeezing the top part of the heater by hand.
  4. If you plan to further remove the wiper motor from the bracket, then do not forget to mark the position of the crank relative to the wiper bracket.

  • completely remove the heater motor, remove the fuse box (two nuts);

Replacing the trapezoid

The replacement process is simple, but it involves manipulations that require increased attention and accuracy - there is a danger of damage to neighboring components and mechanisms.

We de-energize the car by removing the “negative” terminal. We remove the special wind cover (the so-called “jabot”) and the expansion tank. The latter must be removed at an angle - there is a possibility that some of the coolant will spill out, so it is useful to first drain some of it into a previously prepared container.

Then you need to turn off the gearmotor. To do this, remove the corresponding connector

Carefully pull out the trapezoid (depending on the year of manufacture, it can be attached to two or four studs) and carefully remove it from the air supply box. That's it, job done

Installation of a new trapezoid is carried out in the reverse order.

How to remove the windshield wiper trapezoid

To remove the trapezoid you will need:

  • key to 10;
  • thin flat screwdriver;
  • crosshead screwdriver.

First of all, you need to remove the wipers. To do this, you need to remove the plastic pads and unscrew the nuts with which they are attached to the trapezoid studs. Then unscrew the screws and side fastenings of the protective casing (jabot) and remove it. If the fasteners do not come out, treat with WD-40. Before removing the casing, make sure to remove all screws, bolts and nuts. If the cover does not come off, look for a fastener that you did not remove. Lifting the frill, disconnect the washer fluid supply tube from the tee, and then move the casing to the side.

Remove the belt that supports the radiator tank and move the tank to the side. Then pull out the partition (sound insulation), which is located behind the tank. Don't forget to remove the washer fluid supply tube from it. Disconnect the electric motor power connectors. After this, unscrew the bolts securing the trapezoid and electric motor. To remove the trapezoid, you must either struggle for a long time, coming up with various options, or place a thin flat-head screwdriver under the far end (relative to the motor) of the lower rod of the trapezoid and pull out the entire structure as if on a slide. You can also turn the left edge of the trapezoid clockwise and pull it out, then remove the engine.

Putting the trapeze in place

Usually, installing the trapezoid into place does not cause difficulties. Insert it and secure with bolts. Do not overtighten the motor mounting bolt; the motor may need to be turned slightly to get the trapezoid to operate smoothly. After making sure that the trapezoid is working properly, tighten the electric motor mounting bolt, install and secure the sound insulation, frill (do not forget to connect the washer tube), and the expansion tank. Insert the plastic plugs and install them in place, install the arms with brushes and check the operation of the wipers in all modes.

Windshield wiper trapezoids

The main reason you need to replace your windshield wiper arm is when your windshield wipers are running slowly. The trapezoid is also replaced in case of serious mechanical damage. To replace it, you must adhere to a certain technological sequence.

  1. Under the hood, the wires connected to the fuse block are disconnected.
  2. The protective casing covering the heater fan is removed.
  3. The stove filter is removed.
  4. The heater motor is disconnected. You just need to move it to the side, there is no need to remove it.
  5. The decorative trim is removed from the wipers.
  6. Under the protective rubber cover there is a nut that secures the windshield wiper. The cover lifts slightly and it unscrews. The janitor is removed.
  7. The wiper shaft is freed from rings and gaskets.
  8. The second windshield wiper is removed in the same way.
  9. Under the hood, the bolts securing the trapezoid to the body are removed.

It will not be possible to immediately pull out the released trapezoid. The fuse box will interfere, as well as the heater motor. To remove the trapezoid, you can use two exits.

  1. Remove the fuse box by unscrewing the nuts securing it, and remove the heater motor.
  2. Disconnect the gear motor from the trapezoid. Remove the gear motor one by one, and then the trapezoid.

When disconnecting the gear motor from the trapezoid, it is necessary to remember and mark the location of the crank. A marker will be useful for this purpose. Only after this can you unscrew the mounting bolts and disconnect the motor from the trapezoid.
