TOP 5 armrests for Lada Granta: comparison of prices and characteristics

An armrest is a special part of a car seat on which you can rest your arms while driving. It helps relieve stress on the arm muscles during a trip and thus avoid premature driver fatigue.

Armrests for Lada Granta are manufactured by Armster, Alamar and Varta. There are also Chinese-made armrests for this car model.

Original armrests in their original place

The original armrests are made by Armster. They are functional and beautiful black models, with adjustable lift angle between the seats (maximum lift angle is 105 degrees), with a removable top cover and additional space under it, where you can store various travel items, and are also equipped with a pen holder. The main advantage of such an armrest is that it fits perfectly under the required console!

Armrests Alamar

Alamar produces budget options for armrests for Lada Granta, which, despite fairly low prices, are of fairly high quality. Alamar armrests are equipped with a removable zippered cover, which is available in black and gray, matte or metallic. These armrests are only suitable for cars that do not have height adjustment!

Varta armrests

These handy armrests fit into the rear cup holder so you can use the handbrake with ease. They also have a removable cover made of high-quality leatherette, the so-called “eco-leather,” which is very pleasant to the touch, easy to clean and does not wear out over time. The armrest can withstand a vertical load of up to 80 kg!

Universal armrests

To be honest, in universal armrests, universality has only one name, based on which they should fit any car of any brand. But, unfortunately, this is not the case. Most often, there is a situation where a car owner who has bought such a “universal” armrest has to independently adjust it, tighten it, file it and try to fit it in its normal place. And such manipulations do not always achieve the desired result. Therefore, we strongly recommend not to purchase such armrests.

Armrest – luxury or necessity?

The driver's seat in a car should be comfortable and ergonomic. Car armrests are one of the necessary components of this comfort. When the hand rests on the armrest, it relaxes (the load is removed from the muscles of the shoulder and elbow group). The overall load on the spine and back muscles is reduced (you can give your neck a more comfortable position, and even tilt your head back onto the headrest). As a result, driver fatigue is reduced (especially on long trips).

Universal armrests have additional convenient devices and functions that make the trip even more comfortable:

  • box (box) for small items - now you can always place the same documents for vehicles, as well as other useful and necessary things at hand;
  • space for a small bottle of water or a glass – not all armrests provide space;
  • components, several departments of boxing - not all;
  • a sliding mechanism that allows you to move their upper support cushion to a position convenient for the hand or to open access to the box and cup holder - not for everyone;
  • suitability in size and mounting method for installation in many car models;
  • buttons and other electronic controls for some electrical devices of the car - common;
  • other.

The following requirements are imposed on the design and quality of factory armrests. First of all, they must be safe and comply with the standards developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). When developing them, it is necessary to follow rules that take into account the anatomy of people of different heights; they were convenient for both those with a height of 140 cm and those with a height of 190 cm. The factory armrest must withstand loads of 110–120 kg; recline so as not to interfere with the use of the handbrake, high-speed steering, or the use of seat belts; have a sufficiently soft supporting surface under your hand. Its appearance should be in harmony with the interior of the car.

An armrest is one of the popular car accessories that is loved by all car enthusiasts.

The developers of the LADA Granta car did not provide for the presence of an armrest even in the Luxury configuration. And although many owners of this model have no questions about its absence, the majority of them would also like to install it in their car. After all, in general, an armrest is a fairly useful and functional accessory. Having it in the car allows you to keep the necessary things at hand and, in a sense, increases the comfort of the driver and front passenger, providing them with additional support for their hands.

Dimensions of Lada Granta liftback

Overall dimensions of the Lada Granta liftback The width and height of the body remained similar to the Lada Granta sedan, only the length of the body differs; in the liftback it is 14 mm shorter. The interior dimensions of the Lada Granta liftback are also almost the same as those of the sedan. The only exception is the space above the head of the rear passengers, which has decreased by 8 mm. The trunk volume is 440 liters, but can be increased to 760 liters if the rear seat backs are folded.

Dimensions of the trunk of the Lada Granta liftback:

Dimensions of the trunk of the Lada Granta liftback It is also worth noting the difference in the dimensions of the luggage compartment. In the sedan and sport body, the trunk has the same volume - 520 liters, but in the liftback, the trunk is increased to 760 liters, thanks to the modified body.

Comparison of overall dimensions of Lada Granta liftback and sedan

The width of all three types: sedan, liftback and sport is absolutely the same. The dimensions of the car, from the edge of the left mirror to the edge of the right, are 1.7 meters. These dimensions are not very different from other Lada models (in width). At the same time, roominess and comfort are completely different in each model. For example, in Grant the interior is quite spacious, which cannot be said about Kalina. The height of the sedan and liftback body is the same, and is equal to 1.5 meters. But as for the Lada Sport, its height is slightly smaller - 1470 mm. The difference of 30 mm is achieved due to the lower suspension. Dimensions indicating height are calculated from the road surface with which the wheel comes into contact to the top point of the car's roof. Also, the Sport Grant has a wider wheelbase. That is, despite the same width of all bodies, for this sample, the wheel axles are lengthened by 15 mm. Of course, such a difference is not significant, and with such dimensions, the wheel will not stick out from the arches, increasing the dimensions of the car.

The doors are quite wide, which ensures comfortable entry and exit of passengers. The height of the rear door is 97.2 cm, and the width is 61 cm at the bottom and 83.3 at the top. The front doors have slightly larger dimensions: height – 1 meter, width – 1 meter 72 millimeters. With the doors fully open, access to the interior will not be a problem.

Review of existing models

The domestic market is filled with a wide variety of armrest models. At the same time, sellers offer a large number of inexpensive Chinese-made samples. As a rule, they are universal and of low quality. The appearance of parts made of cheap plastic cannot decorate the interior of the LADA Granta car. True, some car enthusiasts cover them with leather or cover them with carpet (non-woven material that is resistant to friction). They also paste it over the walls of the inner compartment of the armrest and then small things placed in the compartment do not jingle while the car is moving.

How to make an armrest for a VAZ 2114

Of course, you can buy a good product at the auto market or in a specialized store, but not everyone is ready to pay several thousand rubles for lower quality items. Moreover, if you have a great desire and a small amount of time, making it yourself will not be a difficult procedure.

In order to make a high-quality and functional product yourself, you will need a drawing of the armrest for the VAZ 2114. You need it so that the final result is a smooth and neat design.

As can be seen from the figure, the material used for the production of the armrest is eight-millimeter MDF and solid oak.

Next, consider the process of self-production:

First of all, let's estimate all the dimensions indicated in the drawing in relation to our free space between the seats. You don't want to end up with a frame that won't fit between the seats. Purchase all necessary materials

In order to make an armrest for a VAZ 2114 with your own hands, prepare the following tools: - an electric jigsaw; - coarse and fine grain sandpaper for sanding wooden surfaces; - self-tapping screws; — a screwdriver (if you don’t have one, a screwdriver and a drill will do); - pencil and ruler; - good, high-quality glue (which is very important); - upholstery; - foam rubber; - nylon threads (if you use stitching); - powerful hair dryer. Now that everything is ready, we need to make the frame of the structure. To do this, take the material and, according to the dimensions in the drawing, using a pencil, outline the contours of the walls, base and cover of the workpiece. Using an electric jigsaw, cut out all the necessary structural parts. Take sandpaper and sand the sharp and uneven corners of the workpieces. Mark the joints for further fastening of the workpieces using self-tapping screws

Apply markings to organize the internal space in the future armrest. Using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws, fasten the component parts of the product together. If you do not have an electric tool, manual screwing will be very difficult. To make the process easier, using a drill with a drill of the required diameter, you can make small guide holes, after which it will be easier to screw in the screws.

Install the necessary fittings (hinges for the folding armrest). Now is the time to sheathe the resulting structure. It is recommended to select upholstery materials depending on the texture and color palette used in the interior of your car. Typically used for upholstery: leather, velor, leather substitute, Alcantara. For the top cover, on which the driver’s hand will be located, it is necessary to adapt (glue) a full-size piece of foam rubber (later it will be sheathed).

After selecting the material, we cover the walls and cover of the armrest. In order for natural or artificial leather to stretch well, it must be heated with a powerful hair dryer and, without allowing it to cool, be pulled onto the frame. In addition, from a practical point of view, it makes sense to sheathe the internal sections of the armrest (so that the objects inside do not rattle when moving). A material such as carpet is perfect for this. Now all that’s left to do is install the finished product into the car’s interior.

DIY armrest

There is another option that will allow you to give the interior of the LADA Granta a unique individuality - make an armrest with your own hands.

To do this, having measured the dimensions of the space between the driver and front passenger seats, you need to:

  • make a corresponding box from plywood and sheathe (cover) it with carpet (leather, leatherette, etc.);
  • make metal fastening elements and a mechanism for tilting the box back;
  • Using standard furniture hinges, close the box with a hinged lid. It must first be covered with foam rubber and covered with the same material as the box;
  • Secure all metal parts to the box and install it between the chairs.

Design and production of universal armrest elements

Based on the measurements taken, we create a drawing or sketch. It is best to do several: separately for front, side, top and, if necessary, bottom views. We depict with our own hands the appearance of the armrest in all sketches in accordance with the selected projection for each specific sheet - front, side, top. Then, on all types, we mark the parts that will make up the design of the future universal arm support. After this, it is necessary to make as detailed a detail as possible of all the identified elements of the armrest on each of the sketches - you should indicate in detail for each detail:

  • its dimensions, and for curly elements also the radii of roundings (bends);
  • the place and method of fastening to other structural elements, indicating the distances to the edges of this part, the diameter of the fastening (if self-tapping screws are selected), the depth of the fastener into the attached part or intermediate bars (on another sketch projection, where this will be visible).

For the armrest support cushion (also known as the drawer lid) and the wall to which the former will be attached, it is necessary to indicate the location and dimensions of the tilt-and-turn fasteners (furniture hinges and their attachment points). Anyone who is good at designing and working with various materials and tools can develop a sliding cover design.

Fixing the future armrest between the seats can be done both by its tight fit and by using specially designed and prepared fasteners. In the first case, it is necessary to provide cutouts and grooves on the side parts of the universal arm support that will fit on the interior elements located between the seats. Also, after making the armrest, but before covering it, you will need to decide in the car at the installation site the thickness of the lining material on the side walls of the support. If you plan to make special fastenings with your own hands, then for this you will need to tie the lower parts of the armrest to the interior elements or fastenings already existing on them. In accordance with the selected interaction diagram between the universal support and the interior, the fastening method and details are developed. For both options for fixing the armrest, we display the corresponding additions to the design in its sketches.

After such preliminary preparation, further work should go like clockwork, unless, of course, a mistake was made anywhere. Therefore, it is worth checking all the sketches again - we look at them for compliance of the dimensions of the developed structure with the dimensions of the free space allocated for it in the cabin, the mutual coordination of all the parts and fastenings of the future armrest.

Choosing a good armrest for Grant

You can purchase the element with different types of fasteners and covers. It is permissible to use products suitable for both Kalina and Granta. An excellent solution would be a universal model that can easily fit into any design.

You can buy a high-quality Grant armrest with a folding or retractable lid: the second type is more practical to use.

The main materials from which the add-ons are made are plastic and leatherette. But the leather armrest for the Lada Grant promises a longer service life.

The most expensive option will be a model made from a combination of wood, metal and leather. True, it looks rich and complements the interior design well.

The presence of several divided cells in the box will allow you to store much more small items, parts or keys. But a single space is suitable for transporting car documents, passports and other important small papers.

If necessary, the driver can easily remove them from the box. Such Granta armrests will be useful for employees of city delivery services or interregional transport: everything they need will always be at hand.

How to make this part for your car with your own hands

First of all, select the material from which the body will be made, as well as the fabric for subsequent upholstery. Their thickness affects the dimensions of the future product. Next, you need to make all the necessary measurements, and only after that start constructing the drawing.

We will talk about the choice of fabric for covering a little later, but we will dwell on the material for the armrest itself in more detail.

Material selection

Wood-based material is best suited for the armrest body. It can be a chipboard, fiberboard or ordinary plywood. If the proposed design does not have curves, then your choice is unlimited. Otherwise, the only material that will suit you is plywood, since only it can be bent by holding it over steam for some time or soaking it in hot water.

To bend the plywood, soak it in a bath of hot water

Consider the thickness of the board: it should not be less than 0.8 cm or thicker than 1.5 cm. The ideal option, which will be strong enough but not particularly bulky, is plywood 1 cm thick. To cover the lid you will need ordinary foam rubber.

Don't forget to prepare the accompanying tools: meter tape, graph paper, and an electric jigsaw for cutting the board into parts.

Measurements for the future drawing

The manufacture of an armrest must begin by measuring the necessary parameters. To do this, arm yourself with a meter tape, a pen and a sheet of paper where you will write down all the data received.

  1. Measure the distance between the front seats.
  2. Holding the gear shift lever with your right (or left, depending on the location of the steering wheel) hand, determine the most comfortable height for the future armrest.
  3. Measure the distance from the handbrake to the back of the seats.
  4. To prevent the window sill from interfering with fastening your seat belts, measure the distance between their buckles.
  5. If you plan to install the armrest in such a way that it will be partially located above the handbrake handle, then move it to the on position, and then measure the dimensions and height of the rise.
  6. Measure the area where your product will be attached.

measure the distance between the seats to find out the size of the future armrest

It is very important to choose the material for the armrest upholstery before starting the actual manufacturing of the part. It may be necessary to adjust the parameters taking into account the thickness of the material.

Element design

Having made all the necessary measurements, begin drawing up a drawing of the future armrest. Be careful: even small errors can lead to your product not being installed in its place or interfering with the operation of other elements of the car.

  1. When creating a project, draw a diagram of the armrest taking into account all sizes and proportions. For more accuracy, draw the part from both the side, front and back. Don't forget to label the lengths of the sides: it will be easier for you to transfer the markings to the material.
  2. Make a drawing for the upper part of the armrest - the future cover.
  3. Consider how to attach the lid: will it tilt or bend. Depending on this, determine the location of the grooves or other fasteners.
  4. If the part is not strictly rectangular in shape, carefully work out the bends.
  5. Determine in advance the lengths of the screws that will be used in the work. If their sizes differ in different parts of the product, indicate this on the diagram.
  6. Decide how the armrest itself will be installed: using special fasteners or tightly fixed between the seats. If necessary, add grooves to the diagram at the bottom of the structure.

using the data obtained from measurements, build a diagram of the future armrest

After the drawing is ready, it needs to be transferred to graph paper (it can be purchased at any store selling sewing supplies) with strict adherence to all parameters. Be extremely careful: this pattern will serve as a model for making an armrest in the future.

Please note that there are standards that must be followed when making an armrest. According to the requirements of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, it must withstand a load of at least 110 kg and not interfere with the operation of the handbrake and seat belts.
